President’s Message___________________________________________ Aloha! We have some busy days ahead with the Healthy Baby Finals still to be held and then we’re doing our part in the ‘Adopt-A-School Day’ on Sunday, October 11th. But first, let’s talk about the State Convention. The Convention, run by the Filipino Jaycees was a true success. Not only in the excellent way it was run, but also for how your chapter fared. HCJ came away with many awards for both individual and chapter achievement. You can read all about it on Page 6.

Healthy Baby – The Last Lap! A big mahalo to our HCJ members and friends for the incredible work you’ve contributed to the Stuffing Party and our 2 Preliminaries. We have only the Finals to go at Ala Moana on Sunday, Sept 20th. Be there at 8AM to get us up and running. Immediately afterward we’re going to some International Dining Out (Restaurant TBA) to celebrate as well as to enjoy some good food together.

Adopt A School Day! On Saturday, September 19th @ 6PM head down to the Ala Moana Center Stage for the Adopt A School Day Kickoff Rally! People from all the participating groups – Jaycees, Lions, Rotary, Etc. – will be there to get this big project off to a great start. After the Rally we move upstairs to Pearl for a lounge party. Admission at the Pearl event goes to the ‘Adopt A School’ program: $5 for Jaycees, $10 everyone else. Then, on Sunday, October 11h, HCJ will be actually doing our part on the official Adopt A School Day! We’re painting the Hoo Cho Chinese School. It’s located at 1342 7th Avenue, off of Waialae Ave in the Kaimuki/Palolo area. Wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty and/or paint on. We’ll probably start at about 8:30AM. We’ll see you there! Healthy Baby Contest

__________________________________________

HCJ has once again taken up the Healthy Baby Contest, these past few weeks only being the public result of months of work behind the scenes. We’re especially proud to possibly be starting a new tradition: the new member as Healthy Baby Chairman! Last year Ken Sum did us proud taking the job in his 1st year and now Allan Wu has been a big inspiration, having only joined us this January! Our chapter wide involvement began on Sunday, August 30 as members, fellow chapter friends, State Officers and even our US Jaycees President, John Weber, gathered to stuff the goodie bags that are given to all contestants. It was a great example of teamwork and Jaycee work ethic, capped off with the serving of some ono food to express our gratitude for all the help. We were now ready for next week. th

1st Preliminary, Pearlridge Uptown Saturday, September 5. 8AM, Pearlridge Mall, Uptown. At this time of the day there were just 2 kinds of people there. Healthy Baby workers and senior citizens doing their morning laps around the mall. Our group got on the job right away, setting up the registration table, the tabulation center upstairs, the goodie bag table and everything else needed to run a successful event. While Krystal Lee brought the goodie bags in her van, the most anticipated arrival was Ken Sum, since he was bringing our food. Luckily he arrived on time, heading off any mass defections or small scale rioting by the hungry. Amazing how much work a person will do for a doughnut. Chairman Allan handled our arriving judges, getting them fed and settled before showtime. Despite his being utterly new to the Healthy Baby Contest he took every job and hurdle in stride. Our team handled approximately 150 baby contestants, all the way from the registration table to the stage line to the stage steps and on to the goodie bag table that was the final stop. While that was happening downstairs, our upstairs team tabulated the scoring, put our Walk Ins into the system and printed up certificates. A pro effort all the way around. Mahalo To Our Pearlridge Crew: Lindley Low, Kevin Nitta, Randy Kim, Stan Fichtman, Leigh Ohta, Krystal Lee, Faye Nakashima, Mike Fujioka, Carrie Azama, Thayer Goya, Melyssa Ching, Deanne Morimoto, Gerald Chung, Anthony Sato, Jon Nishihara, Allan Wu, Jon Nakasone, Annette Lum, Jason Tomita, Ana Che, Ramy So, Ryan Ng, Steven Antonio and, yes, even Ken Sum

Convention Recap!_____________________________________________ If you’ve read the front page you already know the big news – HCJ was once again honored with the #1 spot in the Parade of Chapters. That means we’re the top Jaycees chapter in Hawaii so far this year! But there’s always more to State Convention than just POC. So join us at the Ohana Airport Hotel on the morning of Saturday, August 29th. We were honored to have Honolulu City Councilman Donovan Dela Cruz give us the full benefit of his experience in a lesser-known area of his life. Before serving on the City Council, Mr. Dela Cruz was in marketing. His training centered on the basics of this area, including the marketing of our Jaycees chapters. All who attended remarked on the great points raised in the training.

Our National President Visits The Islands He was not the only notable public figure in attendance, though. We were deeply honored to also have our Nat’l Jaycees President John Weber in town. President Weber began his day by meeting with Chapter Presidents, giving them solid advice from his years in Jaycees. Your HCJ President came away much encouraged from this session, realizing that many of our challenges, though difficult, are common experiences. As everyone knows, though, the Main Event is the evening banquet, when awards are given out for projects and individual achievement. In addition to our chapter’s top placement, many HCJ projects were recognized as outstanding. In fact, our chapter almost swept the project awards completely!

Following the final awards and the traditional Electric Slide, it was time for a little pau hana. That meant heading for Party Central, located in the hotel room of our friends in the Filipino Jaycees. Toasts were served up in honor of all the attending chapters as well as your newly elected 2010 State President, Mr. Stan Fichtman (who started his Jaycee years in HCJ). Our team finally headed home close to midnight, tired but happy.

Meet HCJ VP Anthony

__________________________________________

We have passed the midpoint of this year and it has been awesome! I am glad to see the continuous growth and participation with the chapter in the past year I have been involved. We have had a bunch of fun with recruiting new members and doing fun events like the Farrell’s Birthday Bashes, Dinning out, Bowling, the Crazy Fair days, and the adventurous hiking excursions! We have gained and met new friends through the Jaycees. Now here’s a little bit about myself. People always ask why I’m in the Honolulu Chinese Jaycees, since they know that I don’t have a drop of Chinese in me. I got introduced to the Jaycees through a good friend of mine and was wondering what this was all about. With the first event I came out to be the 50th state fair. I got to know a few of the members and had a bunch of fun. The rest is history. When I am not doing Jaycee things like dinning out, movie nights, hiking, karaoke, GMM’s, BOD meetings, and all the other events I am either golfing, checking out other events going on, or working. Golfing has been my recent indulgence; I started in January of 2009 and got addicted. I can’t wait to get back on the course. I also like going out to different ethnic events and learning something new as often as I can. As for what I do for a living, I take people through a process to figure out how they look at their future and help them prioritize and accomplish their goals. It has been an awesome experience being a part of the Jaycees! I have met a vast amount of different individuals through our chapter, other chapters, and events. I have made awesome new friends and contacts after becoming an active member in the board and also creating stronger ties with each other. I have learned more about how to run an event and how much work is done behind the scenes of the Honolulu Chinese Jaycees. I look forward to all the upcoming events this year has to offer and starting up my hiking adventures soon. Mahalo, Anthony Sato
