Last Farrell’s Birthday Bash For 2009 Thursday, December 17th @ 6:30PM / Farrell’s Pearlridge Uptown We’re heading to Farrell’s for the last Birthday Bash this year. This time it’s in honor of the September to December babies. Come down and help us have a great time that features ono ice cream.

NO DECEMBER GMM GMM will start up once again in January. That’ll give Lindley’s foot time to heal.

President’s Message___________________________________________ Aloha! Hard to believe that we’re electing a new Board, meaning this year is very close to its end. I’ll reserve the ‘What a year it’s been!’ comments until next month as that will be the real end of the term. We had another great month since the last NewsDragon, including the swearing in of 2 new members at last GMM, both of them named Patrick! Please welcome Patrick Graham & Patrick Taw to the great family we know as the Honolulu Chinese Jaycees. I hope they get as much out of their membership as I have from mine. The month’s big projects were, first, the now annual HCJ Halloween Party, held at Sum’s Auto Center. Ken Sum did another fantastic job as host and emcee for the evening. Ken led the crowd in both a Costume Contest as well as the traditional Pie Eating Contest. It was a great time for all!

Miss Chinatown Pageant The 2nd Big Project during this time was HCJ’s return to the Miss Chinatown Pageant! HCJ vets Paul Chun, Gordon Goo & Bob Musgrove were back in their accustomed places running the stage and lights. Lindley Low was in his accustomed place as well – with the grindz (where else?). I’d like to thank the rest of the crew who came out and re-established a chapter tradition: John Cummings, Krystal Lee, Steven Antonio, Isaac Sato, Ken Sum and Ross Lee. It was an eventful evening that culminated in the crowning of not 1, but 2 Queens. You can read about it all on Page 3. I’ll end by just saying it’s a joy and a privilege for the chapter to be back with the Pageant.

HCJ Christmas Party! Remember – there’s still the customary HCJ Christmas Party still to happen! It’s Saturday, December 5th @ Golden Palace Restaurant. We’ll have games, prizes and more once again. We had a blast last year together and we’re planning on having another one this year! Details on Page 6. There’s no GMM in December, but we will be having our final HCJ Birthday Bash @ Farrell’s for all of you September to December babies. We’ve got some ice cream coming your way if you’re one of them. And there’s always room at the table for people who just like to join in the fun. We’ll see you soon! Miss Chinatown!

On Monday, November 2nd, it was Official – HCJ was back on the job with the Miss Chinatown Pageant! It seemed like old times at Hawaii Theatre with Paul Chun once again in the Stage Manager seat and Lindley Low doing Food duty. Ross Lee has done a great job this past year escorting the 2009 Miss Chinatown Court to events around town, but this was our chapter’s return to full involvement. Our members started showing up early in the afternoon to help out with rehearsals and blocking out of the stage for the ladies’ performances. Led by Miss Chinatown coordinators Renee Leong & Stephanie Ching, the team was able to get the arrangements down and planned out for the show later that evening. Lindley & Isaac Sato were given the honor of standing in for the ladies so the spotlights could be tested out. Both men proved that, given the chance, they knew how to work a stage. HCJ Veterans Gordon Goo & Bob Musgrove ran the lights for the evening, taking their customary places in the room at the very top of Hawaii Theatre. Their experienced hands were, as always, a large ingredient in the success of this year’s Pageant. At 6PM the Hawaii Theatre doors were opened to the public. Supporters, friends and family of the contestants staked out their places in the audience and prepared to cheer on their favorite. The panel of judges, which included past HCJ member, and former Miss Chinatown USA, Sylvia Shim Werny, joined them soon after. Shortly after 6:30PM Paul called for the curtain, Steven raised it and the Pageant was on! The proceedings kicked off with the introduction of the contestants, followed by the Q & A. Emcee Jennifer Hong handled this time with grace and confidence, just as she did during the rest of the night. The talent section is always a favorite, giving each contestant a time to truly shine. This year’s show included a Chinese Ribbon Dance, a Chinese Fan Dance and Ballet. It was truly a diverse collection, allowing each lady to truly stand out during her spot. The end of the evening, though, is the time when the tallies are finalized and the, literally, crowning moment comes. This year was a little different because 2 titles were bestowed. They were:

Leilani Soon, Miss Hawaii Chinese – She will represent Hawaii in San Francisco for the Miss Chinatown USA Pageant. Janelle Wong, Miss Chinatown Hawaii – She will compete in the Miss Hawaii Pageant. It was a great evening with a great team and a fulfilling return for HCJ. Here’s to many more years to come! Congratulations to all the ladies!

HCJ Halloween Party!__________________________________________ Your chapter observed another new tradition last There were many more, but space limits us. All month – the HCJ Halloween Party at Sum’s Auto in all, a lot of great costumes. Center! But no Halloween Party would be complete After last year’s success it was decided to keep without 3 things. The first: Costume Contest. Our the party going the next time the holiday rolled competitors were given the chance to strut their stuff around. And so we did. and show off their get up. The evening started with the construction of the Haunted Tunnel of Terror at the entrance under Ken Sum’s direction. The Tunnel included such special effects as spooky ghosts, black lights and, scariest of all, an abandoned toilet Ken found in Kalihi.

Despite strong showings by many, the top honors went to the Braddas/Baywatch offspring. He really did sell it so he earned the prize. What is the 2nd thing, you ask? The Pie Eating Contest, of course. It was quickly over as the “Up” Boy Scout flipped his piece back into his mouth and inhaled it like a sword swallower. All without using his hands! This writer wouldn’t have believed it if he hadn’t seen it! The 3rd and final event for the evening came with the always-riveting Musical Chairs. It’s cutthroat competition here and this time was no different.

Lily Fung once again brought her Jello Shots, this time actually putting some Jello in them.

HCJ VP Ryan Ng got all the way to the Final 2, but finally lost to his larger opponent. Maybe next year, Ryan.

As each person made their entrance it became apparent how creative people can be, given the chance. A few selections:

Boy Scout from “Up” Lilo Thayer & his, ‘cough’, Stimulus Package Dog Chapman Policewoman & Convict Duo and finally…. The Result if one of Da Braddas mated with a Baywatch babe

In between and after all of this the party went on as we mingled, ate and drank together, enjoying some pau hana time after a busy month. The festivities finally wound down after 11PM with some going on to other events, others ready to head home. One thing was agreed upon though – we’ll be doing it again next year!

Every year HCJ Treasurer Ramy volunteers @ the Kapiolani Hospital Halloween Party for the keiki there. This year the usual supplier of pumpkins was unable to provide them for this important event. HCJ stepped up and donated some of the funds so these kids could have pumpkins and enjoy Halloween like any other child. Volunteer Working On A Pumpkin With One of the Kids

HCJers John Cummings & Yvette Lee, along with Tofi Mika, walked 135 miles across Oahu over 4 days. Why? They did it to honor and to raise money for Disabled Vets & Wounded Warriors. Find out more about their great project (& you can donate, too):
