NARRATIVE REPORT (Educational Tour in Cebu City)

Introduction

As part of the aspiring vision to educate the BS-Accountancy Third year students in Productions and Operations Management, a foreseen Educational Tour was to be initiated on a specified place and allotted time. The tour is set to be on March 29-April 02, 2016. We headed to Cebu City on March 29, 2016, the date of our departure and we arrived on March 30, 2016. On our arrival we were accommodated by the Greatways Travel and Tours Inc. We specified 6 companies to visit, namely, Qualfon, Magic Melt, Kor Landa, Maple, Timex Profoods.

Objective The tour was proposed to give the students a chance to see the actual productions and operations of the said six companies since the subject that requires this tour is Productions and Operations Management which tackles about applying business organization and management concepts in creation of goods and services and all other

things related to production. By conducting the educational tour, the students will be more knowledgeable not only for the theory of the topics discussed on the subject but also on the actual experience.

The Educational Tour: A Narrative Three o’clock in the afternoon of March 29, 2016, we travelled to the port of Calbayog through Grand Tours. We left Calbayog port through Cokaliong Shipping Lines at 7PM and we arrived at 7AM in Cebu City. We rode a bus provided by the Greatways Travel and Tours, Inc. with Sir Elmer Abayon and our tour guide, Kuya Dong Milan. We headed straight to Golden Peak Hotel & Suites to arrange our things and have our breakfast. Then after having our breakfast, our adventure begun. The first company that we visited is the Qualfon. We are requested to leave our gadgets in the reception area as one of the company visit rules. Ms. Robi welcomed us and led us to their conference room. They showed us a video introducing the company and entertained our questions. After the discussion, they toured us around the building. Our next stop was in Ding Qua Qua for our lunch. The next company we visited was Magic Melt. We are required to wear our hairnets as we entered their plant for the tour. After the tour, they let us taste their products and our tour guide gave us time to buy Magic Melt’s product for pasalubong. After that, we headed back to the hotel for us to rest and have our dinner. The next day, we visited Timex Philippines, Inc. They showed us a video tour because we are not allowed to have a tour inside their plant. The next company that we visited is the MAPLE or Muramoto Audio-Visual Philippines, Inc. They gave us a brief introduction of their company and their products. They also toured us around their plant and showed us the different equipments that they use in manufacturing their products.

The third company that we visited in our second day is Kor Landa. They showed us the different kinds of materials they use for the jewelries they use and they toured us around their assembly area where they make their final products. They also gave us time to have our selfies with their products in their gallery. On our third day and last day, we visited Profood. We are toured around their plant and we are amazed to see that their plant is really wide. We have to ride on our shuttle bus to go to the next building. After the main purpose of the tour, we were allowed to go shopping and spend the rest of the time, before we leave Cebu City, to have fun. And we did.

By: Ariella G. Pereabras QUALFON is a multi-national (BPO) business process outsourcing company. I learned that QUALFON is a company that gives importance to their employees and to their customer’s satisfaction. QUALFON has different activities that can enhance the ability or potential of each employee and activities that could bring enjoyment and fun to the employees. In QUALFON they have chapel open for different religion because they gave importance to all religion and employees have time to pray or worship even if they are in there workplace. Magic melt foods Inc. is a Filipino food manufacturing company. I learned how they produced their different products, their production process is well organized and they are strict about cleanliness. MAPLE or Muromoto Audio Visual Philippines are a Japanese audio-visual electronic manufacturing company. I learned that they are one of many suppliers of Toyota. The flow of their production start from the customer and ends with the customer. They value and they are concerned with the safely of each workers. TMX Philippines is an American watch manufacturing company, they began their operation in 1980. I have learned that they produce 12 million watches annually. And a big A or attitude of employees is a must. And some of their input (raw materials) are

from china. And their employees are composed of more woman than man, because woman have a light hand. KOR LANDA is a French manufacturing company producing fashion jewelries. Their workplace is so inspiring because of their surroundings and their materials are natural and they produced their products or accessories according to trend and each employee have different passion of style or design. PROFOOD international corp. Is a Filipino food manufacturer of dried fruit products. They don’t have one supplier and they don’t have farm. They have different supplier all over the Philippines. I also learned how dried mango and other products being process from washing to packing, they also applying zero waste management.

By Glory Anne Aleria What I learned from the tour, in broad sense, was everything is done by process. It highlighted all the work and all the steps we do in our daily lives not just in business alone. It flashed back from the planning of the tour to the tour itself. The first company that we visited was the Qualfon Company. It is a Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) company and is a company that is ensuring in terms of goodwill, social, spiritual, and well-being. The firm had been well managed and I learned that we need to balance the things in order for us to be balanced. We must stick with our goals and visions in every decision we make. The second company is magic melt. This company had me in awe on how well they organize their production. The location of the inputs, process and outputs are very well planned to avoid misplacement and disorganization which reduces timeliness. Third is the Timex Company. From the firm’s being a watch manufacturer, time is essential. I have learned that time should be well spent and time management should properly be implemented. Also, time should be matched with all the other things based on reasonable priorities.

Fourth, MAPLE or the Muromoto Audio Visual Philippines is a company that manufactures hardware. They produce products stereo/radio for cars and ATM parts. One good thing about it is it continually improves and is flexible for the customer’s satisfaction. It is their main source or root of strength to keep going. The fifth company is the Korlanda French Fashion accessories. Every manufacturing business has their unique way of dealing with what to produce. Korlanda had it with a very interesting distinguishment from others. It makes use of the things around especially what the nature has for us to produce elegance and beauty through jewelries. I learned that visualizing or forming art and bringing out your artistic side is really important in their business. Also patience and uniqueness is to be noted. The sixth company is the Profood International Corporation – dried mango Manufacturing Company. Aside from the delicacy of the product they produce, what really caught my attention is the zero waste management of the company. Attaining such would be both a plus on their social responsibility and their minimal production cost. It is really inspiring to know that they found out how to attain this – the making of mango seeds a fuel and mango peels as feeds for animals. I learned also that they utilize their time to the fullest they could which lead them to producing other dried fruits as well.

By: Jhona Mae P. Calibo Qualfon Qualfon is a BPO Company. They are mainly composed of call enter agents. These call center agents are divided into two for call and chat to serve their customers. Qualfon is also concerned to improve their employee’s performance and self-esteem to help them achieve their goals. They also reach out to the public by offering help to those who are victims of typhoons and other calamities. Qualfon is making sure that they always achieve their vision to be the best BPO Company and make people’s lives better.

Magic Melt Magic Melt is a food manufacturing industry. Their main products are otap, mamon tostado, biscocho and may more. They always make sure that the areas where they process their products are clean and germ-free. TMX Philippines, Inc. TMX Philippines is the maker of the most famous Timex watches. In their 36 years in the industry they evolve their products according to the trend. China is their supplier of some of their raw materials. Muramoto Audio-Visual Phils., Inc. MAPLE, an American company, is the manufacturer of the stereo/radio parts of cars, ATM machine parts and the like. They are the supplier of Toyota and Fujitso. They use different kind of equipments and machines to make their products. But aside from the equipments and machines, labor is very important for them. Kor Landa Korlanda is a French company concerned with the manufacturing of different kinds of jewelries. They make different sorts of necklaces, bracelets, earrings and rings. The designs of their accessories depend on what is the trend and on what their customers demand. Most of their employees are composed of women. The processing of their products is done in their assembly area. In this area, the people arrange the materials according to the suggested designs and then paint it for the finishing touch. Profood Profood is a food manufacturing industry. They are the maker of the famous dried mango. But this is not only their product. They also process different fruits just like coconut, pineapple, guava, papaya, banana, guyabano, durian and many more. They process these fruits into dried products, canned juices and candies, jams and jelly. The

process of making the dried mangoes is mostly done manually. The washing, peeling, the selection of the ripe ones and the green mangoes, the slicing, adding of other ingredients and drying of the mangoes are done manually. The packaging is done by a machine that automatically weighs the products in every package. Their products are for local and export. They also produce diced mangoes that are supplied to different companies as raw ingredients.

Expectations Generally, what was to be expected from the tour was a measure of experience. Experience typically defined as something that can’t be taken from you. It is also something you can treasure, learn and share. One of the most common “hugot” lines we are familiar with is: “The more you expect, the more you’ll get disappointed”. Well, we’ve expected a lot from this tour especially when it was scheduled at the first week of March. Because of our high expectations, we get very disappointed when it was not approved by our dean and our department head. Fortunately, the industrial tour was approved and scheduled at the last week of March. Expectations went high again. This time, there’s more to expect. One of our expectations was to visit the most popular and most beautiful tourist spots in Cebu. And another, of course, is the very essence of our industrial tour – to visit the actual manufacturing and production of the companies we are about to visit. I’ve also expected that aside from having good management and production process, they’ll also be environment friendly. After visiting those companies, some of the companies like Profood, MAPLE, KorLanda and Qualfon met our expectations. We are not that satisfied with Timex because they hadn’t tour us to actually see their production because of valid and understandable reason. Instead, they showed us presentations. But at least the speaker

was good and informative. What we are not very satisfied with is the Magic Melt. Though they showed us their production, their surrounding is not very welcoming and the time is limited. However, the companies never failed to amaze us with their production and management either on the actual sight-seeing or the video tour.
