Mechanism of action and indications Treatment of the following anaerobic infections: Intraabdominal infections; gynecologic infections; skin and skin structure infections; lower respiratory tract infections; bone and joint infections; CNS infections; speticemia; endocarditis; perioperative prophylactic agent in colorectal surgery.

Nursing Implications (what to focus on) Contraindications/warnings/interactions Hypersensitivity; first trimester of pregnancy; history of blood dyscrasias; history of seizures; severe hepatic impairment; pregnancy; lacatation; patients receiving corticosteroids or predisposed to edema.

Interactions with other patient drugs, OTC, or herbal medicines (ask patient specifically) Cimetidine; phenobarbital; rifampin; phenytoin; lithium; warfarin; alcohol; disulfiram; fluorouracil; azathioprine

Lab value alterations caused by medicine

Nursing Process - Assessment (Pre-administration assessment) Assess patient for infection Vital signs; appearance of wound, sputum,urine, and stool; WBC and beginning of and throughout therapy. Allergy to medication monitor I/O.

Common side effects Seizures; dizziness; headache; abdominal pain; anorexia; nausea; diarrhea; dry mouth; furry tongue; glossitis; unpleasant taste; vomiting; rashes; urticaria; leukopeniz; phlebitis at IV site; peripheral neuropathy; superinfection; disulfiram-type reaction with alcohol

Be sure to teach the patient the following about this medication Complete medication therapy. Patients treated for trichomoniasis sould use a condom to prevent reinfection. Avoid alcohol products. Good oral hygiene and sugarless gum or candy to reduce dry mouth. Urine may turn dark. Report signs of black, furry overgrowth on tongue; vaginal itching or discharge; loose or foul-smelling stools.
