Time Frame: 12 periods Date: TBA Step 1 – Desired Results Established Goal(s): (G) • Use countable nouns in their daily life. • Arithmetic manipulation using calculator. • Effective application of SEL skills: Decision Making (SEL), Social Awareness (SEL) and Relationship Management (SEL) • Use of IT and computer skills to plan and organize information and data. Understanding(s): (U) Students will understand that… • Countable nouns are used in everyday life. • Planning a party requires the use of many skills (including SEL, Math and English)

Essential Question(s): (Q) • How does one effectively plan an enjoyable class party? • Needs vs Wants • How can we get what we need with what we have?

Students will know… (K) Students will be able to… (S) • Plan a successful party. • Understand and apply effective SEL skills in their daily lives (Transferable knowledge). • How to use a calculator (New Syllabus in Math) efficiently to do simple arithmetic calculations. Step 2 – Assessment Evidence Performance Task(s): (T) Other Evidence: (OE) • Reflection on the process of planning • Formative assessment in the form of and the feelings of the individual. rubrics on group work. • Reflection on the process of planning and the feelings of the individual.

Step 3 – Learning Plan Materials: 1) Receipts 2) Advertisements of supermarkets from the newspapers 3) Calculators 4) Toy Cash Register 5) Brain-storming materials – Writing paper, little book, colouring materials. 6) Coloured Hats (Yellow, Black, Green, Blue, Red and White) Learning Activities:

Introduction (2P): • Students will be informed that they will be having a class party but they will have to plan it. • Essential Question “How does one effectively plan an enjoyable class party?” • Teacher will brainstorm with the class the essence of a successful party. • Teacher will introduce the SEL skill of Relationship Management. How to manage relationships in a group. Class to set guidelines and expectations. Students will get into their groups of 4. • Group brain-storming on the type of party they want to have. • Teacher will introduce the SEL skill of Decision-making and inform the class that they will need to make a decision based on the groups’ brain-storming. How will the class go about deciding? • Teacher will introduce constraints like budget and the number of people attending the party. Ask the children to use the SEL skill of Decision-Making to decide on the things they want/need to buy, games they want to play and the guest list which will be discussed the next day. • Reflection of the day’s activities – What went well? What have you learnt today? *HW: Students to bring grocery receipts, the advertisements of supermarkets from the newspapers or flyers and recyclable items like aluminum drink cans, newspapers etc which they have collected over the past 2 weeks. Planning (6P): • Teachers to use receipts and newspaper advertisements to plan budget (Teaching of calculator skills) • Teacher will introduce online shopping http://egrocy.com/ • Students will be asked “How can we get what we need with what we have?” – Solicit answer of “comparing prices” and instruct on the needs to check for expiry dates (Life Skills) • Teacher will introduce the SEL skill of social awareness in the planning of party with budget. Introduce the different dietary requirements of different races and religions. (Select the best based on the outcomes of the Decision-Making activity – includes cost, variety etc) • Teacher will now ask which SEL skills are required in the selection of guest list and why. Accept all answers with the class and discuss the pros and cons with



the class. At the end of the day, the children will be able to take away the fact that - We have to make responsible decisions to have a successful party where everyone can enjoy themselves with the food and company. - Guest list is thus important as part of Social awareness, we should not neglect our disabled friends. What concessions can the class then make to accommodate our disabled friends? Students will now use their MS Word knowledge to present their party guest list and shopping list in document form (Table, Charts etc)

Go Shopping and Party! (4P): • With the list of party items, students will be brought on an experiential learning journey to the neighbourhood supermarket where they will purchase the items. • Students will return to the class to have the party! • Group Reflection: Children will sit in a circle and teacher will facilitate reflection based on the De Bono’s hats. • Personal Reflection: What factors ensured the success of the party and why? What are some improvements you can make? How can you apply the skills you have learnt to other tasks?
