A TOUCH OF SIMPLICITY

No idea seems more harmonious than the concept of genuineness. We trust the things we know are not manipulated or fake. Authenticity is something we desire and hope to recognize. Every day and at every moment, the things we experience through our senses tell us what is beneficial to us. We use these senses to perceive, to feel both what is under or on our skin, to divine our way into every space. They take our breath away, allow us to taste, or inspire us to listen for the silence in which we find peace. With their help we look out, in different ways, at the world in which we navigate between the excessive and the essential, the real and the meaningless. The ability to remain in equilibrium, or regain it as soon as it escapes us, is an essential human need. Creating harmony is the meaning of all the significant things we do. The prerequisites for this exist where life is accommodating and straightforward, but not monotonous. The necessary inspiration comes when you can discover the world without forgetting yourself. THE INNER GAME TEXT MARC ALEXANDER HOLTZ PHOTOGRAPHY ANKA BARDELEBEN

Life is an art form. Living life in harmony is an art to be respected. The array of stimulation, seductions and attractions make life worth living and offer us diversion. The numerous challenges and responsibilities we face constantly distract us from the focus on body and soul, leading us to unconsciously neglect the important things. There is always the danger of being distracted from ourselves. Luckily it is in our nature to return to our paths once we’ve lost our direction. We start listening to our inner voice again. And, in the best case, we return to our intuition, to feeling what is good for us. Tim Gallway developed a new kind of sustainable body training in the late 1960s: coaching. He knew that the opponent in your head is worse than any opponent on the opposite side of a playing field. Through his experience in tennis and golf, he determined that an athlete’s performance depended on far more than mere technique. In professional matches, mental fitness is just as important for a successful game and reaching goals. Gallway started referring to this as the “inner game.” He was convinced that he could overcome, or at least reduce, internal personal obstacles that stand in the way of superb performance – without having to worry about an athlete’s technique. He believed in the potential of unused talent and personal reserves and wanted to unleash them. To put people in a state of inner equilibrium he believed in addressing them in their current states – mentally, spiritually and physically, with all their flaws. Gallway didn’t lecture or preach – he simply wanted people to understand their own strengths and weaknesses so they could make the best use of them. Taking the first step means surrendering your own position. Giving something up to get something you want takes courage and willpower, because you need

to overcome the struggle and the time remaining between now and reaching your goal. Gallway developed his mental training in the late 1980s, moving from sports to American corporate management and eventually into the personal realm. Since then coaching has become a tried and tested tool to improve perception. It trains our ears to listen to our inner voice and opens our eyes to our own personal needs as well as flaws. A need is the recognition of a flaw coupled with the desire to eradicate it. Everyone has shortcomings that he or she would like to change, be it appetite, lack of exercise, restlessness or lack of direction. Equilibrium means different things to different people. That is why the MAVIDA’s spa area offers an extensive, varied range of treatments for every guest, combined with in-depth consultation. We treat needs, or, you could say, flaws. The goal of every treatment is explained at length.

MAVIDA THE INNER GAME

Our aim is to have guests find a way back to their equilibrium in a short time. MAVIDA maintains the strict policy of focussing on the essential. No matter where our guests come from, we want them to relax, recharge their batteries and feel well. This is why MAVIDA takes the intimacy of different mentalities into consideration. Even the treatment rooms’ neutral atmosphere is not disturbed by colour. Our focus is on the human being. We offer immediate relaxation: two to three days of intense re juvenation for those who cannot take that two-week Caribbean holiday. Our in-house personal trainer can even create an individual exercise program guests can do at home, independent of fitness equipment – those concerned with spinal injuries have access to practical insights as well as the knowledge that 10 minutes of regular training per day are sufficient to prevent disc injuries, for example, over the long term. Those who strive to return to their inner selves have no other option but to let go of old habits. The things we can do to retain our internal order depend on willpower, perception and habits, all of which were formed in the past. Every habit is a good habit when we acquire it; that is why we establish them. Habits then form structures that create an effortless routine and enable superb performance. Positive habits are those that are useful today and cause no damage in the long term. The very fact that habits satisfy our need for security and direction is what makes it so hard to break them. Conscious action means deciding on goals in life regardless of habit. And yet no habit is in itself good or bad. It is the unexamined habit that leads to personal weakness, or can cause weak10

BALANCE

ness in the long run. Often they ultimately rob us of sleep and time, balanced eating, and hinder mental and physical exercise. The daily flow of habit leads us down an arbitrary path and rarely requires making conscious decisions. A certain mindfulness is necessary to make our own actions more deliberate, more conscious and wiser. Mindfulness means becoming aware of your life again, regardless of habit. And not just your life but also yourself, your needs and your actions. When we become conscious of emotions, thoughts and actions, we become aware of our natures and learn to understand them. Mindfulness is necessary for our sense of direction. It guides our actions and leads us back to what is essential. People can decide for themselves the sustainability, intensity and quality their lives bring them as well as choose how to follow goals and where these lives will lead. Those who live consciously leave less to chance. Those who know their interests and needs and understand their perceptions’ possibilities will recognize the path to their goals. Those who are conscious learn to experience the senses and know when to relax in order to avoid upsetting their internal equilibrium. People and their weaknesses are as varied as our paths back to our own inner selves.

The American neurologist and psychologist Dr. John C. Lilly de veloped the Samadhi floating bath, better known as the Floata rium, which enhances the senses. The word samadhi comes from the Sanskrit and describes the state of becoming one with one’s surroundings. As soon as the temperature of the water, the floating bath, the room are the same, it is impossible to differentiate the body from the air and the salt bath: forty-five minutes in another world in which one comes back to oneself, preferably for a longer time. Salt water is essentially the origin of life. It is pure sun and light energy in liquid form. The German word sole, for salt water, is derived from the Latin sol, meaning “sun”. NASA tested the saltwater bath to see how long exposure to weightlessness affects astronauts in space. Their research revealed that the pulse within the brain is reduced to the level of theta waves. The brain normally emits theta waves only during trance states, meditation or hypnosis. Floating is thus comparable to a mental journey into your inner self. The observer and the observed are one. A research study by the Fraunhofer Institute on shamanistic ritu als inspired the sound researcher Sha to develop his Alpha bed. The body of the bed is made of light fibreglass material in the shape of a half-moon. It develops its effect through gentle repetitive motions. Your own breathing rhythm creates motion in the bed, which in turn calms the body. Music is delivered through two points and affects the entire body, like a vibration massage. Through the music, the guest is enveloped in a three-dimensional sound cloud. The Fraunhofer study’s most obvious finding was that repetitive, small-amplitude motions can lead to a trance state. The “Blue Box” at the MAVIDA Spa is an elliptical box with an appa-

rently luminous liquid shell, which Sha developed specifically for his bed. The shell creates a moiré effect – two strips of fabric with striped designs that are overlapped. The same phenomenon is also created when two similar waves in water or sound cross each other’s paths. At certain points the two waves reinforce each other; at other points they negate each other. The effect in the “Blue Box” suggests a visual infinity for the human eye. Meanwhile, the user can enjoy the sound massage, the enveloping cloud of warmth and the aesthetics of the play of light. The user can thus reach an Alpha state between sleep and wakefulness. Everything still registers but is not judged or analyzed, “just” received and integrated in itself. The Alpha state unleashes creativity and opens blockages. In Italian, la dolce vita means “the sweet life”. “MAVIDA” comes from colloquial Spanish and describes the art of enjoying life. It is not important how you relax. For inner balance it is simply important that you relax. The things we have, the things we know, and our performance depend on how we treat ourselves. It is said that life is “nothing but the art of creating the right results from the wrong conditions.”

MAVIDA THE THIRD SKIN

ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN

TEXT MARKUS WINGS PHOTOGRAPHY ANKA BARDELEBEN

DETAILS MATTER: AUTHENTIC RUSTIC WOOD AND SLEEK DESIGN CREATE A SPACE FOR PURISTS.

Space is our constant companion. We are surrounded by it and it encloses us, like our skin or clothing. There is a saying that the soul is reflected in the face; that it grows from the inside to the outside. We have learned to call this our skin, and at the same time we have also learned to disregard what it tells us. It doesn’t, however, take much to recognise this and then feel at ease. We are accustomed to covering our first skin with a second one, which we wear consciously. This skin makes things easier for us. We can iron it smooth if it has wrinkles, have it cleaned when it gets stained, and change it as often as we want. The third skin, however, is often underestimated, although it bears the same immediate relation to our mood. We sense it on a daily basis, actually all the time, but we don’t necessarily take conscious notice of it. Our third skin is space. We have all experienced how unusual spatial experiences can take hold of and fascinate us. Whether a gorgeous landscape, a constructed location or an architectural space, we experience our environment through our senses. The space that surrounds us, just like the things that occur there, forms the counterpart to our thoughts and emotions. They are inextricably linked to one another. Our dreams and memories would be unimaginable without the spaces in which they take place; without the space that embeds and surrounds them. In the same way that natural and man-made spaces existentially influence our lives, sensual factors like relaxation and a feeling of security also depend on these external conditions. WOOD FLOORS AND ONE-OF-A-KIND ROUGH-HEWN SEATING CREATE AN ATMOSPHERE WHERE DESIGN AND NATURE COEXIST AS A TACTILE EXPERIENCE. 24

25

MAVIDA THE THIRD SKIN

The third skin thus possesses a definitive function – one that is trivial at first glance, but existential upon closer examination. It serves to bring us contentment in the place we call home, and imparts a feeling – even a temporary one – of refuge, warmth and orientation to the four walls in which we find ourselves. A home that we feel. Alongside questions of taste, as is the case with the second skin, here it also comes down to the conscious use of highquality materials. So that what we touch actually touches us. It’s no coincidence when a space influences our experience of life, inspires us and conveys a sense of security and protection. On the contrary, experiencing these effects subconsciously requires extreme attentiveness in the choice and composition of elements in our built environment, a conscious examination of our needs on the part of the architect. MAVIDA’s architectural concept was guided by the “designed to stay” principle: spaces that make guests want to remain in them. These spaces possess a predominantly sensual effect on guests beyond their rationally perceptible functionality. Here the rigid separation of individual areas has been done away with. A bathroom doesn’t feel like a wet cubicle, but instead also serves as a place to dwell. Lighting effects as well as materials like flooring, woods and fabrics are all consciously designed to work against breaks between different functional areas, and affect us subconsciously like a skin that safely encloses us.

26

ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN

When a spatial atmosphere radiates peace, we can be at one with ourselves. We give in to the effect without consciously paying attention to the architecture. Yet the more clearly we observe them, the more the sources of this effect reveal themselves. In this way, we cannot only freely surrender to a space’s effect on us, but also to enjoy it in all of its functions and decode the ways it affects us. The conscious recognition of spatiality serves our need for orientation. We normally need a distance of five paces to assess an unfamiliar space. This takes place more in the subconscious. If it takes longer, the feeling of alienation or prolonged disorientation can influence our sense of well-being. Regardless of where, whether in the entrance area or the restaurant, or the spa, MAVIDA guests should be able to orient themselves quickly. Architecture and design can serve to guide us through their functionality, forms and symbols. They can also seduce us. It is well worth spending a moment just observing, and to give this moment meaning – how things feel in a space, how they can be touched, what they really look like, what kind of view a window allows to the outside, or the light that enters through it. The view from a window is like a framed picture. We ultimately change the framing with each movement through a room we are looking out of. It is only when we move through a particular spatial configuration that we can fully comprehend the elements, placement of fixtures, their relationship to one another and differences in colour, and finally establish the desired orientation.

27

MAVIDA THE THIRD SKIN

Every space has its own fathomable identity and essential character. It is comfortable, well-kept and transparent. It has its own colour accent and lighting atmosphere. Our motives and interests, however, are what shift things in a space, change them, or move something in them. Through our actions, we give the objects in a space meaning and establish a relationship – we rest, sleep, eat and linger there. Direct contact with a space’s objects and fabrics, in addition to their colour and form, can evoke emotions. Individual objects vary in temperature, surface texture, or in their reminiscence of similar haptic experiences from the past. Our sensual perception also differentiates between natural and synthetically manufactured materials. One hundred percent pure new wool offers a different tactile experience to that of man-made fibres. Natural substances and materials such as shale or laverock impart a different mood to laminate or ceramic tiles. Their natural extraction embodies a kind of reliability, because we can identify, relate to, and recognize them. We trust in their origins, properties and purity. If 70 percent of the materials used in MAVIDA come from the surrounding area, they not only create a calming natural atmosphere, but also establish a regional connection, an identity and a consubstantiality that originates in unadulterated nature.

28

ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN

Whether or not a room or a building functions for us as a unified whole, if it is coherent, if we can embrace it and comprehend it, all depends on our personal experience. A relationship to the „third skin“ is something we find when the space seems trustworthy enough to allow us to be taken in by its charm, or also when the space awakens a feeling, a sensory stimulus, or an instinct in us that promises the possibility of inhabitation – the feeling of being at home. Good design and successful architecture cannot normally be described as the sum of their individual parts. They provide us with spaces to which we ascribe quality and value, and discovering their secrets is definitely worthwhile.

A sea of brilliant blossoms on mountain meadows, cows grazing lazily on Alpine slopes, majestic mountains and pristine cool lakes in the morning sun. Dreams of a perfect world? People want freedom; they long for clear air and clean water. Nature is our soul food; it serves our need for distance and seclusion. Because our lives are full of change, we long for something consistent. That is why nature is our space to relax and recharge. But most of “modern” society can only experience nature recreationally.

40

41

MAVIDA OBJECT OF DESIRE

The nature preserve at the southern end of lake Zell.

Even the Romans realized that regularly taking the waters in a na tural setting led to improved well-being and a prolonged life time. They believed that taking care of the body also served to enhance thought, contemplation and meditation. Today, a swim in the opaline waters of the pristine Zeller Lake in view of surrounding mountaintops can also serve our need for well-being. Natural pleasures may not make us live forever, but they do prolong life – no one can dispute that.MAVIDA is located in the traditional town of Zell am See. You can go on an unhindered stroll through the broad pedestrian zone lined with grand old buildings. A six-kilometre long tunnel keeps out all through traffic.

42

ZELL AM SEE

A mountain guesthouse on Kapruner Tal.

Zell am See is located in the middle of Arcadian surroundings going back 4 billion years. Here you can find truly authentic landscapes, the world’s largest ice cave, rocks that running water has polished for millennia, secret paths and roads as well as largely untouched flora and fauna. It is the perfect setting to just take it all in and just wander away from the everyday. Between the mountains and the plains lies an area of natural simplicity – a contrast to our ever shifting, accelerating urban life. Like MAVIDA, this landscape invites you to come and relax.

The untouched scenery – made up of pastures, solitary Alpine lakes set between majestic mountains, thunderous waterfalls and quiet forests – forms a landscape of ancient healing powers. Places like this were once held sacred because of their awesomeness. “Holy” sites, scattered all over the world, serve to feed the soul. Mountain peaks in particular were symbolic of the union of heaven and earth. Zell am See is surrounded by mountain ranges: in the north lie the limestone Alps like a rocky sea, towered over in the east by the sparkling ice of the Hochkoenig. Rugged and cragged, these are full of ravines and caves that have still not been fully explored.

South of Zell am See, the partially snow-covered mountain peaks of the largest nature preserve of Central Europe, the Hohe Tauern, rise to meet the sky. They are a part of the Central Alps. You can reach them via the famous Großglockner mountain pass. At its summit lies the Großglockner Mountain at 3,798 metres, Austria’s highest peak.

43

MAVIDA OBJECT OF DESIRE

View from the summit of the Kitzsteinhorn.

Zell am See is located on a peninsula between the Zeller Lake and the slopes of Schmittenhöhe, the area’s most spectacular vantage point. The biological diversity is just as impressive as the lake’s purity. Surrounding swamp and reed areas ensure that the water quality remains consistently high. In winter this region is a paradise for Alpine sports, with 130 kilometres of slopes for skiers, snowboarders and freestylers. Furthermore there are several hundred kilometres of cross-country ski trails. In the region’s local mountains, the Schmittenhöhe and the year-round skiing area of the Kitzsteinhorn invite you to go on snow hikes through the forest’s deep snows. You can experience the 44

season’s first powdered snow even in the autumn. All year round there is an almost three-kilometre long cross-country ski loop on the glacier, where, at an altitude of 2,900 metres, workout conditions are ideal. All routes feature lush nature and the “Alpine” experience. Those who normally prefer ice-skating can do just that on the Zeller Lake, which reliably freezes over in winter.

During the summer months you can recharge your batteries just as reliably. Many adventures are possible – from rafting to surfing; from mountain biking to parachuting. With a glider or paraglider you can fly over golf courses and take in the lush green meadows and forests that ascend high up on the slopes until they reach the clouds. The Hahnenkogel Mountain at 1,854 metres is the highest forested peak in Europe. From May until November, nature lovers can experience a paradise of romantic hiking trails and bike paths. Mountain railways comfortably transport you to higher regions; lifts and the Glacierjet ease your way up to the summits. You can reach the Moserboden Lake, a water reservoir, via Europe’s largest open funicular railway. Here, at 2,040 metres altitude, you can

experience how the power of water is converted into energy. The surrounding area – especially in the elevated regions – is authentically beautiful and pristine. Exercise in the mountain air gives many visitors a feeling of freedom as well as an impressive view. Nature has been an object of desire for us ever since the Romantic era. We constantly long for it. And when it is fulfilled it puts an end to all desire. But which of the two is the greater tragedy: Not to get what you want or to get it after all? If there is real fulfilment, is there real joy – deep inside, sheltered, in what is our actual home?

FOOD

By that, however, we don’t mean styled “design food”, for a kitchen is in itself a sensual place par excellence. A meal is more than a design. It is a composition that evokes an intensely pleasurable kind of satisfaction. Flavour enhancers, aromas and food colourings have no place here – art means reducing to the essential. At the MAVIDA, dining is a trustworthy invita tion to satisfy both body and soul. The dishes served are always luscious and authentic in taste, because they are natural. Who wouldn’t let a magnificent meal fulfil its true destiny before savouring it? A kitchen is a place in which there is always room for new discoveries. The art of preparation ap peals to all of our senses in the consistency of its perfection. The honest art of preparation appeals especially to our sense of taste: when fish tastes like fish, and vegetables taste like vegetables. Above and beyond that, this art satisfies our curi osity to try out new things, as well as our aesthetic awareness of the harmony of the ingredients used – before the same “sounds” resonate with our taste buds. In MAVIDA’s kitchen, harmonious meals are composed with selected regional pro ducts – fresh and exquisite, following our own recipes. Food here satisfies our needs on all levels, because food preparation is an art that does not limit itself to mere appearance. The art of cuisine often brings with it a subtle delight, for it con sciously aims at creating a truly sensual satisfaction.
