MeSFiDE 5th Meeting of the partners

Prefecture of Heraklion The results up to now
• Prefect’s decision for the constitution of a
• •
Technical Committee under determined roles for the smooth operation and implementation of the project as well as cooperation with the relevant directorates of the Prefecture. Study and recording of the fishery sector, the fish catches, the fishery tradition etc. in Greek, European and national level. The research is ready. Data collection of the fishermen, the Piscatorial Fleet and the fish catches of the Prefecture of Heraklion. 2
• We have prepared and distributed questionnaires • •
to the fishermen and we have extracted results that present the existent situation of the fishery sector. We have prepared and distributed questionnaires to the fishmongers of our area. Unfortunately up to know their response is extremely limited. We have realized three informative meetings, two in Heraklion, one in Timbaki with the fishermen and the involved authorities.

• We have recorded the problems that fishermen

face today and we have forwarded them to the European Parliament, through the European Deputy Mr. Stavros Arnaoutakis. We have also forwarded the problems to the Ministry of Mercantile Marine and to the Hellenic Ministry of Rural Development and Food. We have collected traditional fish recipes. Participation to the 1st Transnational Meeting of all Partners that took place in Palermo from July 26th to 29th, 2006
• Participation to the ARCHIMED Working Seminar that took place in Athens from September 14th to 15th, 2006

• Participation to the partners meeting that took • • •
place in Athens. We sent our power point presentation and the results of the questionnaires’ analysis to the 3rd meeting of the partners in Palermo. Participation to the 4th meeting of the partners in Larnaca, Cyprus. We presented to the last meeting a sample of the data base for the fishery.

• Definition of the persons related to the • • •
Technical and Pilot Committee of the project. Folders’ creation and printing for the project. Creation and printing of promotional leaflets for the Fisherman’s Feast. Poster creation for the project.

• In cooperation with the Fishery Directorate we
have collected the legal frame that concerns the fishery sector.
• Contact with the Hellenic Food Authority in
• •
order to provide us with the civic-national legislation regarding the certification, the specifications and the hygiene conditions of the fishes We combined MeSFiDE project with THON.DOC project which refers to fishing tourism, so as to provide fishermen with an alternative way to grow their income. Search on the possibility to produce fish-roe in our area, as an alternative fishing method. 11
Fisherman’s Feast The Prefecture of Heraklion in cooperation with the fishermen’s association organized successfully the 1st Fisherman’s Feast in the frames of MeSFiDE and THON.DOC project.

Actions to be done in near future
• We are planning to organize at least one more • •
Fisherman’s Feast to a port in the south coast of Crete. We have decided how to intervene to the traditional fish market so as to be in accordance with the hygiene conditions. We are planning a workshop with the fishermen, the fishmongers and all relevant authorities in August.
