A. The Living Photograph Read the poem below and answer the questions that follow.
My small grandmother is small there, Straight-back, white broderie anglaise shirt, Pleated skirt, flat shoes, grey bun, A kind, old smile around her eyes. Her big hand hold mine, White hand in black hand. Her sharp blue eyes look her own death in the eye. It was true after all; that look. My tall grandmother became small. Her back round and hunched. Her soup forgot to boil. She went to the awful place grandmothers go. Somewhere unknown, unthinkable. But there she is still, In the photo with me at three, The crinkled smile is still living, breathing. Jackie Kay

B. THE CHARGE OF THE LIGHT BRIDGADE
Half a league, half a league, Half a league onward, All in the valley of Death Rode the six hundred. “Forward, the Light Brigade! Charge for the guns!” he said. Into the valley of Death Rode the six hundred. “Forward, the Light Brigade!” Was there a man dismayed? Not though the soldier knew Someone had blundered. Theirs not to make reply, Their not to reason why, Theirs but to do and die. Into the valley of Death Rode the six hundred. Cannon to the right of them, Cannon to the left of them, cannon in front of them Volleyed and thundered; Stormed at with shot and shell Boldly they rode and well, Into the jaws of Death, Into the mouth of Hell Rode the six hundred. Alfred, Lord Tennyson

B. The Charge of the Light Brigade Practice 1 1. The soldiers were ordered to ride forward and attack their enemy. 2. Cannons. 3. 600 soldiers. 4. I think that most, if not all the soldiers in the Light Brigade will die. I think this is the most likely outcome because the soldiers are surrounded on three sides by enemy cannons. Practice 2 1. 2. 3. 4.
The soldiers are marching to battle following their commander’s orders. Someone had blundered. The shooting of the cannons. I think the poet admires the courage and loyalty shown by the soldiers. In stanza 2 the poet describes how the soldiers followed the commander’s order even though they realised it was wrong; ‘Not though the soldier knew/Someone had blundered.’ The poet says of the soldiers; ‘Boldly they rode and well/Into the jaws of Death.’ The poet clearly admires their courage.
