JOHN GARNER
History of the Crash of ’29
A
moment
in
history
has
decided
to
take
a
look
back
into
history
and
do
a
feature
about
the
Great
Depression
and
the
Crash
of
’29.
This
depression
began
on
Black
Thursday
October
27,
1929
where
the
stock
market
took
a
dramatic
downfall.
16
million
shares
were
sold
by
panicking
investors.
Half
of
the
U.S
was
unemployed
and
some
were
homeless.
Our
president
at
the
time
Herbert
Hoover
was
doing
a
terrible
job
on
trying
to
restore
the
country.
Americans
started
to
think
that
there
was
no
light
at
the
end
of
the
tunnel.
Until
the
1932
election.
Americans
meant
someone
they
put
their
faith
in,
this
man
was
Democratic
Candidate
Franklin
D.
Roosevelt.
He
was
running
for
presidency
against
Hoover.
There
was
also
another
party
involved
and
this

FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT
2009 JUNE
was
future
two
time
president
John
Garner.
Garner
was
actually
going
to
drop
out
of
the
race
and
be
FDR’s
vice
president
due
to
the
fact
that
he
knew
everyone
loved
FDR
and
he
would
surely
lose,
but
something
happened
that
shocked
the
nation.
FDR
would
soon
later
announce
that
he
had
to
drop
out
of
the
race
due
to
a
long
time
illness
that
had
resurfaced.
The
daily
news
did
an
article
explaining
to
America
what
was
going
on
and
about
his
sickness.
So
naturally
knowing
this
Garner
decided
to
stay
in
the
race.
This
was
a
for
sure
win
for
Garner
because
just
about
every
American
hated
Hoover
and
plus
Garner
did
have
some
similar
ideas
ad
FDR,
how
would
help
out
some
until
his
untimely
death
in
1935.
Americans
kept
their
eyes
open
to
see
if
Garner
would
have
some
effect
on
the
depression.
Many
Americans
thought
Garner
should
maybe
refer
to
what
FDR’s
were,
if
he
himself
had
became
president. wwww.amonetinhistory.com

TRYING TO END THE GREAT DEPRESSION
Trying to Move Past Garner
was
a
very
different
Politician.
He
was
very
blunt
and
told
it
like
it
was.
Sources
from
Garners
office
reportedly
stated
that
Garner
couldn’t
care
less
about
the
election
or
the
depression
and
welfare
of
his
fellow
Americans.
He
just
didn’t
want
his
reputation
and
outlook
as
a
president
to
be
tainted.
Garner
served
his
presidency
for
a
whole
term.
The
depression
had
not
ended
just
yet
but
he
always
told
America
that
a
cure
was
coming.
The
1936
election
came
around
and
his
opponents
made
Garner
quiet
nervous.
There
could
be
a
very
good
chance
that
he
may
not
be
reelected.
But
Garner
had
something
up
his
sleeve.
He
promised
Americans
that
the
depression
would
over
if
they
simply
had
faith
in
him
one
more
turn.
Many
were
quite
skeptical
about
reelecting
him
but
surely
enough
he
was.
ARTICLE BY: KYARA BROADY
Garner
remembered
that
he
and
FDR
had
talked
about
something
called
the
New
Deal.
Garner
never
consulted
this
before
because
he
didn’t
really
know
the
details.
FDR
had
handled
all
that.
All
he
knew
was
that
it
had
something
to
do
with
WPA
and
finding
work
administrations.
Garner
decided
against
the
New
Deal
because
he
didn’t
really
have
any
insight
on
what
he
doing.
In
1937
he
did
come
up
with
something
that
he
proposed
to
FDR
in
1932
but
never
really
looked
into
it.
This
was
the
creation
of
the
Social
Security
System.
Where
unemployment
insurance
and
more
agencies
and
programs
designed
to
help
Americans
during
times
of
economic
hardship.
This
may
have
helped
the
country
but
no
real
effect
came
during
Garners
Presidency.
It
was
1940
and
the
depression
was
not
yet
over,
but
Garner
was
out
of
office.
2009 JUNE
America
would
now
be
a
man
by
the
name
of
James
A.
Farley.
Something
else
that
was
going
on
during
this
decade
was
the
fact
that
a
war
was
slowing
looming
over
the
United
States.
This
was
a
war
with
Germany
and
Farely
being
a
democrat
that
he
is
he
decided
not
to
go
into
what
would
have
been
the
second
world
war.
He
probably
saved
millions
of
life's
and
didn’t
realize
it.
Unlike
Garner,
Farley
decided
to
think
of
a
way
to
save
the
country
and
get
out
of
the
country.
He
eventually
did
but
no
president
completely
helped
the
country
be
finically
stable.

AMERICA TODAY!
2009 JUNE
Moving
on
today.
The
country
eventually
got
out
of
its
slump.
Maybe
not
going
into
war
saved
us
some
money
and
time.
The
country
was
still
technically
declared
to
still
be
in
a
depression.
But
president
after
president
was
determined
to
get
America
back
on
track.
Surprisingly
the
number
of
people
going
to
college
has
increased
and
the
number
of
homeless
people
has
decreased.
The
depression
lasted
for
about
40
years.
It
might
not
have
been
a
huge
depression
that
whole
time
but
for
40
and
plus
years
the
country
wasn’t
on
the
track
it
was
suppose
to
be
one.
Until
the
most
respectful
president
America
could
have
ever
asked
for
came
into
office
and
this
was
Bill
Clinton.
Many
say
his
actions
were
the
reasons
our
country
is
doing
so
well
today.
When
Clinton
took
office
he
decided
to
do
something
very
smart.
Knowing
that
our
country
was
still
in
a
slump
he
decided
to
do
something
many
were
shocked
at.
He
made
peace
with
all
the
foreign
countries
Iraq
being
an
example.
Once
Clinton
assured
the
foreign
countries
that
we
would
keep
the
peace
money
started
to
roll
in.
Naturally
keeping
the
peace
oil
prices
were
lowered
for
us.
We
saved
and
produced
a
lot
of
money.
About
a
trillion
dollars
was
saved
for
not
treating
the
other
countries
wrong
because
once
again
we
opted
out
of
a
war.
Our
country
is
better
then
ever.
People
are
very
satisfied.
This
generation
should
be
very
lucky.
There
was
a
time
where
Americans
didn’t
even
think
there
would
another
generation
of
their
people.
People
were
so
scared
to
reproduce
and
bring
someone
else
in
the
world
they
must
take
care.
But
now
people
are
strong
and
well
off.
I
mean
yes
a
piece
of
candy
may
$2
but
many
have
the
money
to
afford
it.
Taxes
aren’t
that
high
and
you
can
actually
fill
up
a
car
with
$15.
The
time
has
finally
come
where
America
can
rest
and
not
be
tortured
and
it
can
now
rest
knowing
that
it
is
safe.
Well
that
is
until
another
stock
market
crash
and
Obama
isn’t
president.

INVESTOR NEWSLETTER ISSUE N°3
FALL 2008
Q&A With an Historian “America is just a little lost soul”- Harry Jamenson Could you describe your job and what exactly it is that
Do you think FDR could have got us out of the Great
you do?
Depression earlier?
I
went
to
Princeton
and
for
a
while
I
just
majored
in
World
history,
but
later
on
I
soon
realized
I
would
like
to
study
and
learn
about
my
own
country
so
now
I
basically
go
around
and
give
seminars
about
American
history
facts.
I
am
also
an
American
History
at
Yale.
I
basically
teach
people
about
how
exactly
America
came
to
be
and
if
things
would
be
differently
if
we
had
taken
different
approaches.
Its
funny
because
I
really
do
know
everything
there
is
to
know
about
America.
But
i
recently
took
up
a
job
in
one
of
the
Twin
Towers
in
New
York
Well
I’m
not
really
sure.
For
the
simple
fact
that
we
don’t
really
know
his
plans
were
on
coming
out
of
the
depression.
Rumors
were
that
Roosevelt’s
family
found
papers
of
some
plan
FDR
had
to
get
us
out
of
the
depression,
but
died
before
actually
finishing
it
and
giving
it
to
Garner.
So
I
mean
that
is
possible,
also
there
is
that
FDR
had
more
drive
then
Garner,
who
essentially
known
as
a‐would‐be
quieter.
Where do you think America would be today if we had entered the war?
Do you think the Great Depression could have been prevented?
That
is
an
interesting
question
I
get
a
lot.
I
actually
do
think
the
Crash
of
’29
really
could
have
been
prevented.
Many
don’t
know
this
but
there
was
a
recession
going
on
two
months
before
the
actually
crash,
so
maybe
a
oh
so
great
president
Hoover
could
have
done
something.
Well
I
personally
think
that
America
would
not
have
survived
the
war.
Especially
with
the
Presidents
we
had
during
that
time.
So
if
we
had
went
into
war
with
Germany
America
would
be
worse
then
it
is
today.
Plus
millions
of
people
would
be
dead. How do you feel about the situation America is in today? Is it back on track?
How do you think we should have gotten through this time?
Well
I
defiantly
think
he
was
better
then
Hoover
but
on
the
other
hand
he
was
caught
saying
that
he
didn’t
care
about
the
election
of
the
win
he
just
didn’t
want
a
bad
reputation.
I
mean
he
could
have
been
better
and
actually
thought
about
what
he
was
doing
he
could
have
been
amazing.
I
mean
when
you
have
someone
like
FDR
sort
of
being
your
friend,
you
should
know
what
you
are
doing.
Well
today
America
is
just
a
little
lost
soul.
it
has
been
tortured
and
just
not
treated
right,
but
really
looking
at
America
today
it
is
in
a
really
good
place.
There
were
time
when
everyone
thought
that
it
was
never
going
to
happen
but
I
mean
colleges
are
affordable
and
everyone
is
really
in
a
good
finical
state.
I
was
even
on
the
internet
looking
up
and
the
amount
of
homeless
people
are
less
then
ever
before.
I
must
say
I
am
proud.
~Kyara Broady
So in your opinion was Garner a good president?
I
have
no
doubt
that
FDR
could
have
been
a
much
better
president
then
Garner.
When
you
hear
his
speeches
when
he
was
in
the
election
he
did
have
amazing
plans.
But
I
guess
we
would
never
know.
