SCHOOL OF HEALTH SCIENCES LESSON PLAN HPE 1202

LESSON ORGANISATION (based on Australian Curriculum: Health & Physical Education)

Intention: By the end of this lesson, students should be able to demonstrate two different types of marks; a chest height hand mark and an overhead mark. Pre-lesson organisation: Make sure that all the bibs and cones are organised by colour and that the footballs are pumped up. Equipment: Coloured cones 3 sets of coloured bibs 15+ Footballs Learning Area Outcomes: Year 7 Football Program Strand: Movement and Physical Activity (MPA) Sub-Strand: Moving our body (MB), Understanding Movement (UM), Learning through Movement (LM) Focus Areas: Active Play and Minor Games (AP), Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS), Games and Sport (GS) Time 9:00

Task(s) Observations Task Management (What students do) (What to look for) (Management of Student Group) Beginning class organisation: - Bring the class together at a stationary meeting point - Ask students to sit with a partner - Give a lesson objective for today’s lesson - Get students to collect a cone each and 1 ball between the two - Students set up their cones – 1 metre opposite each other. The next set of cones are 1.5 metres away from the first set.

Warm Up  Shrink and Grow (8mins) 1. Students stand next to their marker facing their partner who is at the cone 1m opposite them 2. The teacher blows the whistle and the pairs must handball or kick to one another and mark the ball 3. If the pair make 5 consecutive marks they can take a step backwards 4. If they drop the ball they must go from standing up, to kneeling on their knees. If the ball is dropped again they must sit down with their legs crossed. If the ball is dropped again they must lay on their backs. They then start again. The aim of the warm up is to practice catching the ball in a static environment with a small amount of pressure to not drop the ball.

All students are playing correctly and following the rules Students are not interfering with the performance of other students around them Students are either handballing or kicking, no throwing the ball All students are actively participating

The teacher is supporting students, encouraging them to try and mark the ball as many times as possible. Evaluating the skill level of each student. 9:10

Bridging organisation To smoothly move onto the next activity, bring the class in close keeping pairs together. No need to bring in any balls or cones as they will be used for the next drill. Give a brief run-down of how to mark a ball – chest-height hand mark. Discuss the key teaching points.

Skill: Marking The first skill to be taught is marking a football at chest height with the hands. Demonstrate to the class what a chest height hand mark looks like. Activity1  Don’t Drop the Ball (8mins) 1. In pairs, students must kick the ball to one another making sure the flight of the ball is high. If the kicks are not accurate the ball may be thrown 2. The ball must be marked above the head 3. If the ball is caught they take 1 step backwards 4. If the ball is caught 3 times in a row they must stop stepping backwards and kick the ball and overhead mark it 3 more times without dropping it in order to continue taking steps backwards 5. If the ball is dropped they take one step forward 6. In order to step backwards again after dropping the ball, they must make 3 consecutive overhead marks 7. Students will continue this activity until the next instruction The aim of the drill is to be able to practice marking the ball in a calm environment and see what areas need improving.

9:20

Chest-height hand mark: - Fingers are outstretched pointing towards the ball - Thumbs are positioned behind the ball - Arms must be extended so that they are long, no elbow bend - The ball is firmly gripped with the fingers - Watch the ball as it leaves the player’s boot or hands Everyone is participating in the activity and no one is skipping their turn.

The teacher is scanning the class, walking up and down the lines watching the techniques being used and correcting students if their technique is incorrect. The teacher is observing skill level.

Bridging organisation The teacher will blow the whistle, signaling to students to put the football on the ground. The teacher will create groups of 5 or 6 according to marking abilities and knowledge. Ask students to collect their cones and balls from the last drill and keep 2 cones and 1 ball per group, get 1 student from each group to put the other equipment to the side out of the way. Students set up the area with 2 cones 10 metres apart. Give a brief run-down of how to mark a ball – overhead mark. Discuss the key teaching points.

Skill: Marking The second skill to be taught is marking the ball over the head. Demonstrate to the class what an over the head mark looks like. Activity2  Line Up (7mins) 1. In groups of 5 or 6, students line up in front of the feeder who is 10 steps away, with the ball 2. The first player runs forward to receive a handball or kick from the feeder at chest height 3. The chest-height hand mark is made and is handballed or kicked back to the feeder. The player goes to the back of the line 4. The following players repeat the drill. 5. Swap the feeder after all players have marked the ball. The drill continues until further instructions. The aim of the drill is to be able to practice marking the ball in a calm environment and see what areas need improving.

9:30

Overhead mark: - Jump off one foot and swing the other knee up to gain maximum height - Fingers stretched out so hands are open and wide - Thumbs together so hands form a ‘W’ formation - Arms extended with a slight elbow bend - Ball is caught slightly in front and above the head - Ball firmly gripped with the fingers. All students must be touching the ball and getting involved The teacher is observing the students’ abilities and correcting any incorrect techniques.

Bridging organisation: The teacher will blow the whistle and ask students to stop moving and to place the footballs on the ground. The teacher will create groups of 4 so that students are with other students who have similar abilities and understanding. Get 1 member from each group to get 4 cones and 1 ball between the group. Groups will set up the cones in a square grid that is 5 steps by 8 steps by 8 steps.

Activity3  Contesting (8mins) 1. In groups of 4, 3 students are standing in a grid 2. 2 students are contesting for the mark, the third student will be picking up the dropped balls. The fourth player will be kicking the ball into the grid 3. The two contesting students are trying to score as many points as possible by marking the ball 4. The ball can be marked over the head or at chest height 5. Swap roles after a contester scores 3 points The aim of the drill is to practice using the two different marking methods in a stimulating game-like scenario where players are under pressure. If the kicks are not accurate, the feeder may throw the ball.

Chest-height hand mark: - Fingers are outstretched pointing up with palms towards the ball - Thumbs are positioned behind the ball - Arms must be extended so that they are long - Elbows bent - The ball is firmly gripped with the fingers - Watch the ball as it leaves the player’s boot or hands Overhead mark: - Jump off one foot and swing the other knee up to gain maximum height - Fingers stretched out so hands are open and wide - Thumbs together so hands form a ‘W’ formation - Arms extended with a slight elbow bend - Ball is caught slightly in front and above the head - Ball firmly gripped with the fingers.

The teacher is walking between each group and assessing the students’ marking abilities and assisting students with questions or feedback.

No one is sitting, everyone is moving around and getting involved 9:40

Bridging organisation: The teacher will blow the whistle and ask students to stop moving and to place the footballs on the ground. The teacher will split the class into 4 groups with 7 or 8 students. 1 student from every group will collect the cones from the previous drill and put them away while getting 3 cones (2 must be the same colour), 1 football and 7 or 8 bibs. Students then set up the playing area so that 2 of the same coloured cones are 15 steps apart, with the other coloured cone in the middle of the two other cones.

Game  Continuous Football (13mins) 1. One team is fielding, the other is kicking. Among the fielders is a wicky keeper who stands behind a large cone. 2. The fielders are aiming to mark the ball to get the kicker out. Fielders can also collect the ball and tap the kicker to get him/her out or pass it to the keeper who can tap the cone. 3. Once the ball has been kicked, the kicker must run to a cone and back to score 1 point. They may run as many times as they like. 4. Once the kicker is out, the next kicker in line is up. 5. The fielders must have a go at being the keeper. The aim of the game is to practice using the two different marking techniques that were learnt in the lesson as well as practicing marking the ball in a more competitive and intense environment.

The teacher will be walking around the grids, observing player abilities and the techniques used. The teacher is assessing game play and correcting students providing feedback for teams. The teacher is also making sure all students are getting involved in the game.

Closing Organisation: Teacher blows the whistle and asks all students to collect the cones, footballs and bibs and bring them in to the starting point of the lesson. Put equipment down neatly. Get students to sit down in their groups in front of the teacher. Closure: Students are sitting in front of the teacher. The teacher goes over the drills that they did and asks the class what the main focus points were for each drill. The teacher also asks students to state a key teaching point of the chestheight hand mark and the over-head mark.
