NEW YORK - A New York janitor found himself holding a policeman's gun when the officer needed a free hand to handcuff a suspect. The hand-off happened at the end of a wild chase through Manhattan on Friday. Police spent an hour trying to collar a motorist who struck a taxi and a jogger, then fled on foot after hitting a van. Police say the suspect slipped into a basement and tried to disguise himself as a janitor when the real maintenance man spotted him and went for help. The officer who responded was trying to cuff the suspect with his gun drawn when the weapon wound up in hands of janitor Placido Contreras. Contreras tells the New York Post he only held the gun for a moment.

To set someone free from captivity is in effect to release that person from the hand, or control, of the captor. You can use this analogy to remember that "manumit" derives ultimately from the Latin noun "manus," meaning "hand," plus the Latin verb "mittere," meaning "to let go" or "send." The two roots joined hands in Latin to form the verb "manumittere" (meaning "to free from slavery"), which in turn passed into Anglo-French as "manumettre" and eventually into Middle English as "manumitten." "Manus" has handed down other words to English as well. One of them is "emancipate," which is both a relative and synonym of "manumit." WELLINGTON, New Zealand - Two New Zealanders whose bank mistakenly deposited NZ$10 million, or $6.9 million Cdn, into their account took some of the money and ran, police said. Authorities launched an international search for the couple, who operated a gas station in the northern city of Rotorua, and their Westpac Bank said Thursday it considered the money stolen. The two applied to Westpac for a NZ$10,000 overdraft, but 1,000 times that amount was paid into their account. The two then withdrew some of the money and disappeared, Sgt. David Harvey said. Westpac conceded human error was responsible for making the couple accidental millionaires. Authorities did not release their identities. Harvey said Interpol has been contacted for help, suggesting they may have fled abroad with the cash. "We are currently conducting an investigation into the individuals that may have been involved in the withdrawal of that money," Harvey said. Westpac spokesman Craig Dowling said the bank had recovered some of the money but declined to give further details. The bank said in a statement it was "pursuing vigorous criminal and civil action to recover the sum of money stolen." Banking Ombudsman Liz Brown said it is generally considered a criminal offence for people to spend money accidentally deposited into a bank account if they are aware that the cash is not theirs. In her 15 years as ombudsman, Brown said she had been involved in 10 to 20 similar cases.

Toddler buys real digger online A New Zealand couple nearly found themselves in a financial hole when their three-year-old daughter bought an earthdigger in an internet auction. The child, Pipi Quinlan, was trying out her online skills while her parents were asleep in bed. They only unearthed the truth when they received an email demand for NZ$20,000 (£8,000) from the seller. Pipi's mother, Sarah, had left the computer logged on. The owner of the digger is not insisting on the sale. Sarah Quinlan told the BBC that she had been looking for toys online, and using an automatic log-in to an auction site. But Sarah is determined the same thing will not happen again, and has urged the parents of other young children not to be caught out. "I've taken all my automatic log-ins off anything she could purchase from," she said.

This Week in History… A T A B U N N N L Y S O F

Did you know…. From its verb "cupere" ("to desire") Latin derived three nouns which have passed with minimal modification into English. "Cupiditas" meant "yearning" and "desire"; English borrowed this as "cupidity," which originally in the 15th century was synonymous with "lust." (The "greed" meaning of "cupidity" developed very soon after this other nowarchaic meaning.) Latin "cupido" started out as a near synonym of "cupiditas," but it came to stand for the personification of specifically carnal desire, the counterpart of Greek "eros"; this is the source of our familiar (and rather domesticated) Cupid. A strengthened form of "cupere" -- "concupiscere," meaning "to desire ardently" -- yielded the noun "concupiscentia" in the Late Latin of the Christian church. "Concupiscentia" came specially to denote sexual desire, a meaning reflected in the English version "concupiscence," meaning "sexual desire."
