~Submission Deadline for the EDGE ~ is FRIDAY at 5:00 p.m. Commentary— A FEW TIDBITS ON LIFE In a time when all the news is simply regurgitated sensationalist crap, or one story after another of the vulgarities or torments of our species (again, sugared with sensationalist re-mixing), one would hope that there is something different out there. I am not in favour of turning the world off, however. We need that dose of reality even if we have to dig harder to find the human story behind it. But when we change the channel and see or hear the same thing over, and over again; or pick up another newspaper and try not to be assaulted by the exploitive headline banners; or insulted by either form of media by being told what is important...isn’t it time to see the quirkier side of life?
Hammer time for cellphone used to run up $5K bill CHEYENNE, Wyo. - A cellphone used by a 13-year-old Wyoming girl to run up a nearly $5,000 phone bill will text no more - thanks to her angry father and his hammer. Dena Christoffersen of Cheyenne sent or received about 20,000 text messages over about a month, and her parents' phone plan didn't cover texting. Her father, Gregg Christoffersen, says he thought texting had been disabled on her phone. It's disabled now - he smashed the phone to pieces, hours after getting a bill for more than $4,750. The family says the phone company Verizon has been willing to knock the bill down to a reasonable level. Dena has been grounded until the end of school. She says she feels bad and has learned her lesson. [Ed. In the colloquialism favoured once by the youth….”Dah!”] Arkansas church holds Easter service in bar LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - A fledging Arkansas church will
see if distilled spirits can mix with the Holy Spirit this Easter weekend. A new church called The River will hold both of its Easter services at The Rev Room - a bar and nightclub in Little Rock, Arkansas' River Market. Pastor Shane Montgomery told KLRT-TV that it's an effort to attract a new audience to his nondenominational ministry. However, bar employees say it's not yet clear if their liquor licence will allow them to serve beer and booze during a Sunday morning service. The church says it would also like to hold Mother's Day and Father's Day services at a bar. [Ed. Somehow I think it wouldn’t be too hard to fill the pews if Father’s Day was in a bar. Though somehow I think it won’t be a “family” affair] Featherweights: Detroit police halt pillow fight DETROIT - Police in Detroit have ruffled some feathers after they cracked down on an organized pillow fight at a downtown park. The Detroit News newspaper reports police at Campus Martius Park prevented the feathery fight Saturday by disarming pillow-toting participants. The bout was part of a worldwide event organized on social networking websites. Michael Davis says police confiscated the 32-yearold man's pillows but returned the cases. He says he was told he needed a permit. Scott Harris of Ferndale told the News it's "not illegal to own a pillow." Detroit police spokesman James Tate says cleanup was the issue. [Ed. And nearby...the police were really needed.]

Did you know…. The word "hieroglyphics" refers to an Egyptian writing system that was unintelligible to later civilizations until an inscribed stone about the size of a coffee table was discovered over 200 years ago in an Egyptian town called Rosetta ("Rashid" in Arabic). The Rosetta stone, as it came to be called, held a key to the ancient writing system. Probably written by Egyptian priests in the 2nd century B.C., its hieroglyphic text repeated a text written in familiar Greek. As a result, Egyptologists were able to decipher the symbols. Today we also use "Rosetta stone" figuratively, as we have since the early 20th century, for other things that provide clues or help us to understand something that would otherwise be undecipherable.
