Eastend Edge “Our Town news” Week starting: October 5 2009 Submission deadline Friday 5 p.m. Commentary
Credit for Good Cents
Fall has been blowing in with determination for the last week. All the best of this summer was concentrated in September but now, Fall is saying that it’s time to get indoors and tackle the domestic chores again. Paperwork. It’s about that time when the credit card statements arrive with pesky little notices attached. That’s enough to pique my interest. Credit cards are so much a part of our daily lives now that we hardly give them any extra attention. We use them like a second income or an extended line of credit. Use them, pay them something and use them again, and again, and again. They’re handy, quick, easy and colourful. Who has just one of them anymore? We usually have a few, some of us have several. How many of us look closely at them? I looked at mine only briefly the other day and it made me wonder. If GICs are paying not quite .50% per year, why is the rate on the average credit card about 19.5%? That’s quite a difference. Hasn’t anyone told these boys there’s a recession on? These rates apply equally to customers with excellent as well as fair credit ratings. Mortgage rates are down to about 3.75% for a year but the credit card biz hasn’t adjusted at all. The banks offer a huge variety of perks with these cards but they aren’t of much economic value unless you are clever enough to use a no fee card and pay the balance off every single month. If you can do that then any interest rate they apply is irrelevant. You’re free riding on the system and, good on you.
Rural South West Art Show Exhibits Array of Talent On October 2nd and 3rd. the Eastend Arts Council hosted its biannual art exhibition. Participants came from the Eastend area as well as Simmie, Shaunavon, Frontier , Leader, and Swift Current. Art of all mediums was welcome and included, paintings, photography, textiles, jewellery, and sculpture. Considerable effort went into mounting this exhibition so that all the submissions could be presented in a professional manner. The result was an enjoyable opportunity to see what surprisingly rich talent there is in the South West area and what creative interests thrive here. The participating artists included: Grieta Krisjansons, Trea Schuster, Jack Wilkinson, Marg Wiebe, Noelle Bouzet, Alice Hanlin, Todd Milions, Dennis Wall, Cindy Gerard, Laurie Reynolds, Val Fiddler, Tania Breen, June Busse, Brenda Larson, Tiffany Moffit, Glen Duke, Randi Scansen, Monica Iverson, Marilyn Widdifield, Jeanne Kaufman, Boyd Coburn, Charity Coburn, Gabriele Kuck, and Tess Ryder. Many thanks to Laurie Reynolds and the whole crew who made this possible.
Astronomy on the Edge Named after the Roman God known as Zeus in Germany, the planet Jupiter technically has no surface as it is entirely made out of gas. Jupiter can be seen without a telescope because of its huge size. The gravitational pull of the planet is so high that anything and everything that passes the planets gets pulled towards it. Jupiter has 63 moons and one of them is volcanically active and it is the only moon in the entire universe to be in such a state. The fastest spinning planet of all, Jupiter has clouds that are up to 50 km thick and the average day on Jupiter lasts around 10 hours. After Venus, Jupiter is the second brightest planet in the Solar System (Venus reflects 70% of sunlight). Mars outshines Jupiter only when approached very close to the Earth. Interesting Fact is that Jupiter emits weird sounds or so called "electromagnetic voices" recorded by NASA-Voyager. However, lots of us make monthly payments. Now the rates really matter. A little notice from one group disclosed that payments are applied to finance charges and fees first. They’re then applied to purchase, balance transfer and cash advance segments of the account from lowest to highest annual interest rate. When paying the minimum payment, whichever segment of the balance has the lowest annual interest rate will be paid first. The only way to beat this is to pay more than the minimum payment each month. It reminds me of John Henry, poor man, owing his soul to the company store. MBNA is one of the companies that call relentlessly to sign me up for credit cards. They’re cards average 17.99% to 19.99%. They’re owned by Bank of America, that excellent institution that needed a $45 Billion US bailout from the American government. The CEO has just resigned and will have to settle for $53 Million US in retirement pension benefits. I don’t understand why I’m the high risk individual in this scenario. The only way to protect yourself is to examine what you’re really getting for what you’re paying. There are low rate credit cards available without annual fee. They aren’t often advertised but are worth asking for. The dollars saved make sense and all of them are yours. JK
