Eastend Edge Week beginning Monday, SEPT 28, 2009

Submission deadline Friday 5 p.m.

Guest Commentary – Natures Fight One of the sounds of nature, at least somewhat embedded in our cultural psyche, is that of the majestic Loon. Its “cry” echoes across a northern lake fenced with trees. The quiet still of the water gently folds as the Loon moves forward. An impressive icon of all the creatures great and small. What an emblem of nature. Or should I say Nature, with capitalized formality denoting its tender importance. And for what its worth, as a small nanogram of the entire constitute of what ever has, and ever will be of nature, I hate it. Nature that is. We have to express first, before we discuss the parameters of this hate, what nature is. Nature (capitalized or not) includes us. Us, in part, is them. We are all composed of the same general molecular structure, weaved and bred in the tapestry of life. We are a part of nature. We are connected to the blades of grass in our front lawn as we are related to the fruit fly Drosophila. That said, the cause of my bottled ire is that I don’t like the progressive, or as I call it, destructive nature of nature, familial known as aging. Nature, I say, bite me. For this is apparent daily, to all of us, when we look hard into the mirror every morning. If the reflection is blurry its not because of the angelic haze that surrounds you or me. Its because first thing in the morning, you or me likely need to where your progressive glasses. The mirror can be a wonderful reflective of the person and the soul. Oh, how the poets have projected the image from a pond or manufactured mirror. Its unabashed telling of the truth is harder to digest than the simple physics of how the mirror works. For it sees, for me, a man who once had a strong, powerful chest, built by repetitive strain and cause, chiselled in human male form of brawn, that is now, in time, quite different. From once there was a chest, now boasts breasts. For this is just one of the ravages of Nature. And the discouraging signs continue. Without my bi-focals I can hardly read a thing. So what was the reasoning companies of hair products to make the print on the bottles so small. Yes, I have chosen a brand from a shelf of dozens of other makes and models with the clarity of repaired vision - because I read the labels. But how, in the midst and mist of a shower can I read which one is conditioner or shampoo without my glasses? Yes, we do have our lovely routines don’t we, especially in the morning. Built up from decades of repetition even if our surroundings have changed periodically. Yet progressively I have to make a conscious effort to choose the appropriate tubes and canisters in the morning ritual. It has happened to me on more than one occasion when I was about to mistakenly use my shaving cream instead of my deodorant. That said I have at times also mistaken another tube for my tooth paste. The specifics need not be divulged. Yes, we can have fun as we get older. Laugh at ourselves; at others. But when it comes to nature and what she, he, …. it has done, and in this case is doing to me, it is deadly serious. And when I am confronted by Nature under my control I take it out on Nature every chance I get. My nicely manicured lawn and yard is not for some personal medicinal, psycho-babble, therapeutic, zen-like moment I try to achieve in this communion; sitting in my yard, head to the sky, wondering the peaceful thoughts of a higher, sentient being. No, my nit-picking clean, colourful, lush yard has only one purpose for me. And that is for some momentary control over Nature. Even if it is one neatly trimmed blade of grass at a time. TT

On September 26th the Eastend Arts Council and the Missoula Children’s Theater presented an adaptation of Hans Christian Anderson’s classic story, The Princess and the Pea. This was an interwoven affair including leprechauns, seasonal sprites and dust bunnies. Costuming, sets and design were beautifully created. The songs were cleverly done, especially Two Peas in a Pod. And the choreography was enthusiastic, the Dust Bunny Stomp was not to be missed. Impressive work was accomplished in a scant few days which brought out unexpected talents in all the participants. Renee Roberts and Sam Rudolph of the Missoula Children’s Theater have virtually caught a leprechaun under a rainbow with this charming production. Linda Wig provided tireless musical support which ensured another excellent children’s presentation. The entire cast and crew beamed with enjoyment as did the proud and appreciative audiences. Bravo to all. JK

Did you know…. A company in Brazil (Suite Vollard) constructed a building in which each floor can rotate 360 degrees. Each building has 11 apartments and each apartment can rotate individually. One rotation takes a full hour, but the owner can set the rotation speed through an apartment control panel. Facades are made of three different types of glass which give wonderful effects when building spins during the sunset. Cost of each apartment is $US 300,000.00.
