~Submission Deadline for the EDGE ~ is FRIDAY at 5:00 p.m. Commentary— GRAY’S MESSAGE Thomas Gray was an 18th century poet. He wasn’t the most prodigious of writers….I think I have written more memos in one year than he wrote in his entire life. I guess his work would be more rhythmic and satiating, though I must admit, some of my memo’s do hit the scholarly bell and could, under the right circumstances and lighting be considered pieces of “literature” Gray was one of those fragile writers, ill in youth, overly susceptible to criticism and sickly weather. Educated in some of the most prestigious schools in Britain, he would form only a few friendships. Travel at that time was the big deal in high culture. You weren’t worth your salt if you hadn’t seen the “continent”. Of course, being a poor poet didn’t attract much in the way of money, he hitched rides with those who were of more independent means. His compositions were almost as rich as the locations from which he wrote. One poem, Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard was said to have been written in a graveyard. The most famous one, at least to the rest of us uncultured souls, Ode to a Distant Prospect of Eton College, was a reflective piece on his school days, and the naivety of youth. It is here that we all have come to know Thomas Gray, even if we didn’t know who he was. For it is a portion of one line that strikes the universal memory: where ignorance is bliss, 'tis folly to be wise, It is in ignorance that makes us unaware of the prospects, hard and demanding, that the youth care not for. Of course through out history we can find cantankerous moments of protesting ignornance from the likes of Lester Pearson and William “the shake” Shakespeare. There is never a loss for despairing wordage. Though less poetic, a little more sour interpretation of Gray’s infamous “ignorance is bliss” line is 20th century philosopher Bertrand Russell. I haven’t found at what moment in his life he said this, but as a philosopher, often of the human condition, I am sure there were many moments that ignited his pessimistic pen. He wrote the following: Most people would sooner die than think; in fact, they do so. Whether you agree with this or not, in full or in part, we all must admit that ignorance, or the lack of thinking, has been well documented in our lives, and throughout history. Or else we wouldn’t have the Darwin Awards, the morbid annual listing of knocking oneself off through the most brainless acts of ...well...brainlessness. I have no idea where this is all going, and likely I need that editor mentioned in earlier columns to keep my hands away from the keyboard. Except, that I might add to Gray’s statement, and as a pre-emptive to Russell’s sad commentary, that we will all pay for our own individual blissful ignorance. As a youth, we don’t see the future, and we are mindless of the past. As a youth, we are supermen and superwomen. We can leap tall buildings in a single bound, we are faster than a speeding bullet. We are strong, hear me roar. Dingle-bat. We are neither capable of jumping higher than a few feet, and only as fast as the physiological constraints that the evolution of our species has dictated. We are, simply put, mortal. And if I sound bitter; bitter at my youth, and the youth today I have solid ground and support to pronounce such angst. For, in a round about way, the first wife of philosopher Dr. Russell was Alys Smith. Her brother, Logan, an essayist and biographer, also pontificated on ignorance, youth, and bitterness, for he came up with this wonderful truism. The denunciation of the young is a necessary part of the hygiene of older people, and greatly assists the circulation of their blood. TTT
