~Submission Deadline for the EDGE ~ is FRIDAY at 5:00 p.m. Commentary— A COMEDY OF WRITERS I receive mail all the time. Not just the usual fliers and catalogues, enough to clear cut a forest in some third world country, or credit card applications, but almost literally tonnes of it, every week. And our email? Well, every week the inbox is full, from fans and well-wishers alike, all around the world. Mr. Gates wants to give the EDGE email account its own special place. Yes, the multitude of staff here at the EDGE, and there are many of us, all take pride in how well we are received in this great Nation, on this tiny planet, on this speck of dust in the universe. One eastern European leader whose name will remain nameless once ask me “so how do you do it? Having many jobs, being the hub of all that is Eastend, and still look so good?”. I replied, “Vlad” (I’ve been calling him Vlad ever since that party in Brussels which I’ve been sworn to secrecy): ”it’s much like running a country. No matter how badly you screw up, you just have to look good doing it”. Vlad, what a guy. One of the Bush’s, the junior and more scrambled of the two, also keeps writing me. He uses the postal service a lot since he hasn’t mastered “the internets” yet. He also writes his notes to me on the back of his internal memos from the last year of presidency (which makes for great bedtime reading), and in crayon, I still get a chuckle out of his requests for advice. None of which, sad to say, has been followed. I just let his letters pile up. You see, we here at the EDGE, me in particular, can be a kind shoulder for world leaders to lean on in times of need or pontification, or we can be hard-line purveyors of the truth, which many of the elite have come to expect from me. Britney once asked me whether she should resurrect her career. I told her yes, but only one more time. And for her not to consult Michael Jackson. His emails are automatically deposited as “junk mail”. In the bags, and bags of mail that is delivered to the EDGE each week we get postcards from Brad and Angellina from all over the world. “Great food and antiques here, wish you were here too. Love, Brad and Angellina”. Those guys. They are real collectors those two. Always antiquing. The cards mostly are from Brad as we’ve come to realize a real “bro-bond”, he being born only a few months after me. He sort of looks up to me I have to say, though most would have thought George would have filled that role. But that’s just for public show. George and the rest of the modern day “rat-pack” are really not as tight as most people believe, but that is for another time. Surprisingly, at least to many of you, Dr. Phil writes a lot. With his public interest in the well-being of so many people, he asks me for advice, though you won’t see my name on the credits on any of his shows. That’s privileged client/patient information and as my “patient” I’ve already revealed too much. Paris keeps texting me at the most inopportune times. I just keep passing off her messages to my secretary saying “whatever”. The youth of the nations write a lot. They are more apt to put pen to paper, or fingers on the keyboard than most adults, especially when it comes to the big questions of life. Miley does that a lot. Her teenage years have been front and centre of much of the public eyes, and it is likely a surprise to most that she has deep interests in humanity and the state of the world and morality. She asked recently, “Mr Edge” (go figure) “Is it OK ever to lie?” I replied, “no Miley, it is never OK to lie. Because if you keep lying, no one will know when you are telling the truth”. And God forbid that amongst the volumes of writing in the Edge, the truth should not come out. TTT

Did you know…. A whipsaw is a type of handsaw worked by two people, one of whom stands on or above the log being sawed and the other below it, usually in a pit. The tool dates back to the 15th century, but it was not until the 1870s that anyone thought to use the saw's name figuratively to describe situations in which someone or something is doubly "cut," or hurt. Today, the word is commonly used when discussing financial crises or losses. For example, just recently a chief executive explained in a press statement that his company was "whipsawed in the fourth quarter as key industries were hit by a rapidly deteriorating economy and plunging commodity prices." (The New York Times, January 27, 2009) Too often we seek justice for just us.

Did you know…. The phrase "up to scratch" has its origins in the world of sports. In the 18th century, "scratch" began to be used for a line or mark that served as the starting point in a contest or competition. In order to begin or continue a fight, for example, a pugilist would "come up to the scratch," positioning himself at a line drawn across the prize ring. "Up to the scratch" was soon being used figuratively of anyone who was ready and able to do something. Over the years, the usage of the phrase has evolved somewhat, but something that is "up to scratch" can still be said to be ready and able in that it is capable of functioning or performing as expected.

Creamed Broccoli Soup INGREDIENTS √ 3 tablespoons butter PREP TIME 20 Min √ 1 onion, chopped COOK TIME 45 Min √ 4 large carrots, chopped READY IN 1 Hr 5 Min √ 1 clove garlic, chopped √ 4 cups water √ 4 tablespoons chicken bouillon powder √ 1 pound fresh broccoli florets √ 2 cups half-and-half √ 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour √ 1/4 cup ice water √ 1 tablespoon soy sauce √ 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper √ 1/4 cup chopped parsley DIRECTIONS 1. Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat; add chopped onions, carrots, and garlic, and cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally until softened. In a medium-sized cooking pot, add 4 cups water and chicken bouillon granules and bring to boil. Add precooked onion mixture to soup pot. Add broccoli florets, reserving a few pieces to be added near the end of cooking time. Reduce heat and simmer, covered, for 15 to 20 minutes or until broccoli is just tender. 2. In a blender or food processor, puree soup in batches and return to pot. Stir in half and half cream and remaining broccoli florets. 3. In a cup, mix flour with 1/4 cup cold water to form a thin liquid. 4. Bring soup to boil; add flour mixture slowly, stirring constantly to thicken soup as desired. Add soy sauce, black pepper, and stir well. Garnish with chopped parsley (or carrot curls) when serving. Serve soup hot or cold.

Did you know…. "Garble" developed from Late Latin "cribellare," a verb meaning "to sift." Arabic speakers borrowed "cribellare" as "gharbala," and the Arabic word passed into Old Italian as "garbellare"; both of these words also meant "to sift." When the word first entered Middle English as "garbelen," its meaning stayed close to the original; it meant "to sort out the best." But that sort of sifting can cause a distortion, and in early Modern English "garble" came to mean "to distort the meaning or sound of."
