~Submission Deadline for the EDGE ~ is FRIDAY at 5:00 p.m. Commentary— THE LITTLE MAN IN MY HEAD How many times have you said or sent something you regretted? That at the time of composing or speaking...it sounded just right. It was a quick, easy repertoire, full of wit and/or self righteousness. It felt good. But given that moment, that single moment longer, we would have saw the moment for what it was. We would have seen our wit or repertoire, or note for what it was. That in a grand perspective, appreciating all the ramifications of the spoken or written word, we would have understood the simplicity of the adage of putting a sock in it. That sometimes the words—spoken or written— are best choked and withheld. In a formal sense, an editor is someone who proofs the written word, submitted by some pretentious author, or noble scribe (or someone in between), making sure the t’s are crossed or the i’s dotted, that the structure and intent are intact in a readable fashion. They are also there to make sure, as far as humanly possible, that any faux pas are minimal. Editors are the unsung (or unwritten) heroes of written language. But then again as T. S. Elliot once commented “Some editors are failed writers, but so are most writers”, so the nobility of the craft just flies out the window. But what most people don’t realize, or appreciate, is that all of us have much to do with editorializing. Somewhere between the lobes of grey matter, in an area likely within corpus callosum, the place where millions of neuronal bridges between the two sides of the brain, our natural “editor” exist. For the left and right sides of the brain function within, and comprehend reality in rather distinctly yet complimentary fashion. A strong corpus callosum keeps us functional and not in the loony bin. Without this internal, physical editor, in part, we would reply to our spouses questions of personal appearance, or our boss’s queries in a rather different manner. Another place our self-editor may hide is in the prefrontal cortex at the front of the brain. This is where some studies in neurology see marked behavioural differences regarding inhibition if it is damaged. To some extent this self-editor is simply another name for our conscience. But I can’t imagine anything but a contrived scientific word for “conscience”. With “self-editor” I imagine a little grey-haired man, dishevelled and agitated, living in my head. He works seven days a week, and on-call 24 hours a day, which explains his dishevelled and agitated state. He has a significant work load. Everything that is thought is vetted through him. Only when he approves it, in a nano-second, is it sent to the area of speech or to the motor skills that govern the hands to write or type. In a nano-second. He pulls his hair out when something slips through. “No boss, your project proposal absolutely stinks. Maybe if you submitted it in the original, crayon edition, we all could have had a real laugh, including my five year-old.” With emails, and text messaging, the intent is for nearly substituting face-to-face conversations with technology. Real-time experiences is what in vogue. But our little “self-editor” is now over-taxed. First he just had to deal with the spoken or written word. Now he has to deal with technology that deals with fasterthan nano speed. How can he keep up? Of course, the other purpose of a self-editor is in its simplicity. Because, simply put, a strong, healthy self-editor would have stopped the composition of this little mental wandering before it even began. TT
