Eastend Edge Our Town News
SUBMISSION DEADLINE FRIDAY 5 P.M.
WEEK OF NOVEMBER 23, 2009 Commentary-
Carpenters Build Bridges When I wrote a brief article about two traveling German carpenters in the Sept. 14th issue of the Edge I couldn’t have guessed what an effect they would have on the town of Eastend or the impact the town would have for them. Nils Unruh and Markus Lorenzen will be leaving at the end of November after masterfully producing everything from bird houses to barn doors, decks and cabinetry. Once people realized their skills they were scooped up for one project after another. However, beyond their excellent construction was the simple and surprising enjoyment of meeting them. Patient, pleasant, consistently practical they met everyone with open good humour and curiosity. We learned about them, their homes and their journey. They learned about us and our town.

Their first contact was, naturally, Charlie. He was curious about them and welcoming. Charlie poured them endless coffees, served them breakfasts and cut their hair. He offered them opinions, of course, and he made them feel at home. Charlie’s Lunch was a Mecca for them and made life in a pup tent manageable. Most of all Charlie introduced Eastend as friendly and fair. Nils and Markus realized that they had arrived in a good place. Work quickly followed as Rob Hillier began to phone around and promote their presence. Each job was a study in careful construction, clever design and rapid completion. The lumber yard in Shaunavon was conquered by their relentless pursuit of good materials. Nils and Markus went on to learn why Canadians are renowned for their excellent beer. We, who had them to dinner, learned with amazement a whole new definition of supply and demand. It was a good time and the experiences made all of our lives bigger. We will regret their leaving and they, in turn, will miss Eastend. When they think of this country it will be defined by Eastend and what they found here. Good bye, Nils and Markus, and good luck. Wieder bald gekkomen. JK

Poetry on the Edge -
Grown-up An idea is salvation by imagination. Frank Lloyd Wright
Was it for this I uttered prayers, And sobbed and cursed and kicked the stairs, That now, domestic as a plate, I should retire at half-past eight?

If all mankind were to disappear, the world would regenerate back to the rich state of equilibrium that existed ten thousand years ago. If insects were to vanish, the environment would collapse into chaos.
Physiology Facts Bones, Skin and Bits Did you know that there are 206 bones in the adult human body and there are 300 in children (as they grow some of the bones fuse together). Everyone's tongue print is different. The longest cells in the human body are the motor neurons. They can be up to 4.5 feet (1.37 meters) long and run from the lower spinal cord to the big toe. As an adult, you have more than 20 square feet of skin on your body--about the same square footage as a blanket for a queen-sized bed. Healthy nails grow about 2 cm each year. Fingernails grow four times as fast as toenails.

Pastime Players Return to the Stage Do you remember seeing the production of Bad Year for Tomatoes that was presented by the Pastime Theatre Players in 2002? It was the first of several dinner theatre plays that were produced by the group for fun and fundraising. The troop originally comprised Marnie MacRae, Deb & Jim Fletcher, Laurie Reynolds, Tracey Silzer, Sean Whitney and a cast of others, including Wynn Reynolds and Ron MacRae who provided technical know how behind the scenes. Following on this successful start several more plays were produced at about 2 year intervals. Every one a comedy and every one a rich experience for the cast and audience.

What makes amateur comedy so much fun? Partly it’s the legitimate opportunity to be someone you ordinarily can’t be; silly, extravagant, goofy and hammy. But, it’s also fun to take a script and elaborate on it until it feels at home in a local community production where no one is schooled in acting. Everyone does what he or she thinks of as emoting with a little exaggeration thrown in. The audience enjoys this kind of theatre too because, of course, we know the whole cast and rarely get to see them so exposed to humour. The imperfections that invariably occur during the performance just add to the enjoyment; the desk drawer that won’t open, the retort that comes too long after the shot is fired, the lines that are flubbed. This is good, clean fun that will keep you laughing all evening.

Astronomy on the Edge Only 4% of the universe is made of known material - the other 96% is traditionally labelled into two sectors, dark matter and dark energy. Astronomers believe that both the universe and galaxies are held together by the gravitational attraction of a huge amount of unseen material, now commonly referred to as dark matter. Dark energy and dark matter are simply different manifestations of the same thing, which can be considered as a 'dark fluid'. On the scale of galaxies, this dark fluid behaves like matter and on the scale of the Universe overall as dark energy, driving the expansion of the Universe. Cosmologists predict a ratio of 3:1 of dark energy to dark matter. Apart from very light neutrinos neither dark sources have been confirmed experimentally.
