EFFECTIVE WAYS IN BUILDING YOUR VOCABULARY Learning how to build a better vocabulary can be an enjoyable and useful investment of both your time and effort. Spending at least ten minutes each day studying can help you hone your communication skills like writing, speaking, making articles, and the like. Obtaining a large vocabulary is a big help in school and socially. It will make you understand more ideas and others’ ideas as well. We already know a lot of words, and we will surely encounter more either we study new vocabulary words or not. But dedicating ourselves in learning more vocabulary words can make us learn more faster. We all know for the fact that there’s no shortcut in learning new words. So our speed in learning new words should increase so that we can obtain a larger vocabulary. There are four basic steps to building your vocabulary. First is being aware of words. Reading alone is not enough in enhancing our vocabulary. That is a caveat. Let’s take reading a pocketbook as an example. We have this tendency to skip unfamiliar words so that we’ll be able to know what will happen next. But the best thing we can do is to pause for a while, search the unfamiliar word on a dictionary or thesaurus, and know the meaning of it. Yes, this will make our reading a little bit slower, but at least we already know the definition of those words.. Second is to read. In reading, we’ll be able to find the words we should be learning. This is also a good way of checking the words you’ve already encountered. There’s a chicanery that we will learn the meaning of certain words of we just keep on reading. When you see an unfamiliar word you have encountered before, and you already understood it, it means that you already know the meaning of that word. Third is to keep a personal dictionary. After that, highlight or mark the unfamiliar words you have encountered, so it will be more easier for you to look for the words you found unfamiliar. This will serve as a sort of review. After which, read the full definition of the word. There are words that have two or more meanings, and sometimes, the first definition is not the meaning implied in the context. So you need to read other definitions to suit the right meaning. Plus, it will be beneficial later on for you, because if you encounter the word again but with different meaning, you’ll be able to understand the word without looking up to the dictionary again. Lastly, you should study and review regularly. Make a concatenation of the vocabulary words you’ve encountered. Once you have begun looking up words and you know which ones to study, vocabulary building is just a matter of learning and re-learning the words habitually until you fix them in your memory. This is best done by giving time each day for vocabulary study. During that time you can look up new words you have noted during the week and review old words you are currently learning. You may find more time later on, and you will be moving in the right direction. And later on, you will just chortle because you unexpectedly learnt thousand of words by just doing these tips.

The most important factor in enhancing your vocabulary is dedication and verve. It will be difficult for you to study words for long period of time without a nudge that it is worth doing, that a larger vocabulary will help you in school, and that it can lead to a more exciting and fulfilling life. You can expand your vocabulary almost as fast as you can. There are numerous examples of people who have done so. Remember, you started out in life knowing zero to no words, and now you know thousands. You can learn much more. So why not start today?
