Homes, Renovations & Real Estate

Replace the Vanity and Medicine Cabinet

t is a well known fact that when home buyers look at potential abodes, the rooms that help a home sell most are wellrenovated and updated kitchens and bathrooms. Perhaps this is because people spend a great deal of time in both locations each day and want their experiences there to be as pleasant as possible. Unfortunately it can get sometimes pretty pricey to do a full scale remodel of either room. This article is designed to help you give your bathroom a quick face lift without weeks of back breaking labor and without breaking the bank. The keys are to keep it simple: try just updating the vanity and the medicine cabinet.

THE VANITY The vanity includes the bathroom sink, the accompanying faucet and the base cabinet or pedestal. This is where many people spend time each morning getting ready for the day, putting on makeup, sculpting their hair, shaving, and brushing their teeth. And more than that, it is often the centerpiece of the entire bathroom. Because of that reason, it is important to look at the overall style of the room and perhaps even the entire house to see what style of vanity would be most complementary. There are all sorts of styles to consider. The most traditional look is a wood cabinet base with an inset sink basin, but of course there are all sorts of variations in the type of wood you can choose as well as the style of the detailing. You are certainly not limited to the common wood box cabinet base (although this is usually the least expensive option!) There are also vanity cabinets made of stone or covered in tile. And don’t forget the very chic pedestal style vanities or even very modern-looking wall-mounted sink basins that give the appearance of almost floating in mid-air. What really counts when you do some remodeling is that you pick a vanity that fits both your functional and stylistic demands. The bathroom cabinets typically provide a great deal of storage space for the room. This will certainly influence your decision. If your remodeling project is on a small bathroom or even a half-bath, you may be able to get away with installing a sleek pedestal vanity because the extra storage is not needed, but a larger room, and certainly a master bathroom will usually dictate the need for something more substantial. You should also consider

Issue #12

Page 4

how much work will be required to maintain the appearance of the vanity you choose. Some materials need lots of polishing and scrubbing to retain their luster, others may only need a quick wipe-down daily to look fresh and clean.

THE MEDICINE CABINET Another quick fix for your remodeling job is to replace or install a medicine cabinet. These not only provide very handy extra storage room, but they also add beauty and decor to the bathroom. Medicine cabinets come in sizes from large to small, but the one you choose should again be based on your needs as well as your style preferences. If you’re looking for great storage, choose a large cabinet that can hid your hair dryers, electric razors, and other toiletry accessories that you use daily but don’t really want visible during the rest of the day. Yet if you already have a large mirror over the vanity and plenty of storage room, the best choice for you may be a smaller medicine cabinet fixed on a wall adjacent to the vanity that can house smaller items, like toothbrushes and, well, medicine. When you are working on a budget, your bathroom remodeling project can benefit most from a new vanity and a snappy new medicine cabinet. f the idea of creating a new look for your home, whether a complete renovation or just a single room, seems a bit daunting, then you may want to consider calling on the skills of a professional. An interior designer will guide you through the many choices available in the world of furniture, fabrics, accessories, kitchens, baths, lighting, flooring and more, while offering you creative solutions for your specific design needs. Because a design project can represent a considerable investment of your time and money, you want to get it right from the start. A designer will help in every phase of your project — from forming initial goals and helping to choose quality furnishings and accessories, to overseeing and troubleshooting the work of contractors and craftspeople. Working with a professional interior designer is one of the best investments you can make, saving valuable time and avoiding costly mistakes. An appealing and inviting space requires proper planning and lots of creative inspiration. The design of your home or office should not only complement your personal aesthetic vision but also satisfy your family’s daily needs. A professional designer can present innovative and clever ideas to help you create a welcoming and relaxing home filled with your individual style.

Before you meet with your designer, you should have a clear understanding of what you need from a design project. An interview is your opportunity to present your project, listen to the designer’s observations and insights and examine the designer’s work. Discuss your needs, present your ideas and review their portfolio. Be frank and honest with any designer you may interview and don’t be afraid to ask questions.

Professional advice can help you clarify your design and renovation goals and give you an overview of the best ways to achieve them. Designers can assist in space planning, provide informed opinions on furniture selection and experience in the use of color, texture and pattern. They will offer a practiced understanding of the subtle, yet essential, elements that make a home warm and inviting. Proportion, color, style, balance and comfort are the fundamental concepts of design that, when properly executed, make all the difference in the world. Good design is more than a question of style and appearance; experienced designers also help you make your home or office functional and efficient.

Working with an interior designer is about more than beautifying your home or workplace. It’s about improving the quality of your life by enhancing the spaces that surround you. Under the guidance of a design professional, your attitudes, experiences and personalities can be translated to the rooms where you spend so much time. What better investment could you make for tranquil day-to-day living? It’s a lifestyle decision that simply makes sense.

Every interior design project is a personal statement, planned by both client and designer to reflect the client’s specific needs and desires. An interior designer can help you establish your goals, formulate your budget and create the basic structure from which your design will be realized. Whether you want a project completed immediately or are looking for a plan that achieves your design goals gradually over time, designers are happy to work with you on an approach that accommodates your priorities and budgetary needs. Experienced designers will also help you avoid making costly mistakes. They will offer you informed recommendations for the best products and materials for your particular project and the way you live. They will also help you optimize your design budget, whether it’s integrating your existing furniture into new design schemes or offering several design solutions for a particular interior.

Its A Potters World ottery is one of the oldest and popular art forms, having continuously developed over the years creating unusual and modern masterpieces. It is believed that the art form has been practised for over many centuries, dating back between 29,000 - 25,000 BCE in what is now known as the Czech Republic. These were not the normal pottery that we see today, but were traditionally used for depicting religious figures and statuettes. The first known vessels were believed to have been developed in Ancient Japan of the Jomon people. The vessels date back to 10,000 BCE, where the word Jomon refers to the vessels being cord marked and how these were a common marking for most of the vessels using sticks to wrap the cord around the vessels. Furthermore vessels were excavated in China, with more found in North Africa and South America during the seventh millennium. Pottery was revolutionised when the potter’s wheel was invented between 6,000 and 4,000 BCE during the Mesopotamia period. Potters were then able to produce more potted goods the world’s first cities and big towns where the demand for pottery had increased. Before this, the potted process was completed slowly by hand. When better fire kilns were built these dried at a much better quality than they did when they were air dried. Different materials resulted in a different dried look. Coarser particles used in the pots and figures acted as a protector to prevent from shrinkage. Most of the time the material and category of each pot can be determined by how it is fired. Earthenware for example is fired using temperatures from 1000 to 1200 degree Celsius, whereas porcelain is fired at around 1200 to 1400 degrees Celsius. The materials used also play a very important part in the end product helping it to take form in the way it is meant to and appear the way it is meant to. Some developments were made in terms of designing the finished product and glazing it. For archaeologists and historians excavating pottery is essential for discovering facts about that period, for example, most of the vessels and figures depicted a significant point in time. They can also depict cultural stories and provide insights into how people lived in that era. Many of the artistic designs on the pots told stories of historical events, provided insight into cultural attitudes, social relationships, religion and recorded evidence of the language used at the time. Simple glazed pots and ceramic ware was not just a tool for eating out of and keeping as mantelpiece objects. Most of the potted goods we see in the shelves of Debenhams or Habitats, as they have played an important part in discovering social and cultural history. They have helped define previous events and helped us to understand how

Page 10

these events have come to shape our modern culture today. This has also become a hobby which adults take part in. Some have even come to place their work on display in art galleries, with some even winning the Turner Prize for their work. Of course pottery is open to everybody. This is not just an art that adults take up because of the demand for quality ceramic pots. Young children have benefitted in taking part in classes that concentrate on their moulding skills, honing their creativity skills and raising their confidence in becoming more practical.

About the Author: Written by Anna Stenning Anna Stenning loves to take part in pottery, because it gives her time to relax and appreciate ceramic arts, and their historical relevance to the world. Article Source:http://www. freearticles.co.za/home/accessories/its-potters-world.html

Decorative Entrance

One of the most common wall tiles is ceramic. Ceramic tiles have been made by man over 4,000 years ago. They have been found in the pyramids, the ruins of Babylon, and ancient Greek cities. They displayed beautiful sculptures of that period of time. Ceramic tile is made from a mixture of clays that are fired on high temperatures and then are generally glazed. They are used to add beautiful accents to your walls and your surroundings. Wall tiles are more durable then any other wall covering. They are easy to clean, stain resistant to most acids, not effected by oxygen and easy to maintain. You can put wall tiles in any room that you need easily maintainable surfaces. They help create a sense of freshness and tranquility. They are available in a wide range of design, color, materials and patterns. Some of the materials are ceramic, porcelain, limestone, metal, slate, marble, granite, cork and glass. There are many sizes, shapes and decorative techniques that are used for you’re choosing. Before purchasing the tiles you must measure and make certain you buy enough for your surface. Proper preparation makes it easy to install yourself. There are many professionals that can install the wall tiles if the “do it yourself” does not work for you. You must make sure you have everything at hand before you start the project. This job does require special tools. For instance you will need a saw, tile cutters, nippers, trowels, spreaders, rubber float, and a leveling board. Professionals also apply tiles to walls using a thick bed of mortar. Since your wall tiles won’t be walked on you can use ceramic or rustic stone. There is also available recycled glass which comes in a variety of colors, shapes and sizes. This is for the environmentally minded individual. Also in this same category you can purchase metal tiles in panels which are lighter. This material can also be hand painted or antiqued to match your decor, but please keep in mind that metal can be harder to install. Anywhere you would like beautiful art on walls you can put up tile murals. They are especially attractive as a back splash in your kitchen above your counter or stove top. It can make any room in your home unique, special, and very comfortable. Decorative techniques are used on tiles. Some examples are unglazed which the color can range from light sand to brick red. There are also plain glazes such as flint, white lead, china stone and china clay. These are all ground to make the glazes. They add ground metal oxides to form different colors. Last but not least there are mosaic tiles. These come in a variety of color choices. Yellow, blue, brown, black,

turquoise, green and white are the many colors they come in. They are carved and cut into small pieces and placed close together into a prepared pattern. They are plastered and hardened into one large single piece. Some other techniques are hand painted, carved, tube lining, modeled, and transfer printing. Porcelain tile is very popular material used in today’s homes. It is a newer form of ceramic tile. It is composed of fine porcelain clay that is fired at higher temperatures then ceramic. It is denser, less porous, and prone to take in less moisture and more stain resistant. .The downside is that it is harder to cut then ceramic. Porcelain is suitable for the indoors as well as outdoors. Marble is more high maintenance and very porous. It needs to be resealed every 1 to 2 years depending on where it is used. For instance in a shower area where there is heat and steam. Granite wall tiles are stunning and dramatic but very heavy. These can be hard to install because gravity takes over. They must be securely attached but once hung correctly they are very durable. Cork is another durable and stable material. It is a pure material and it improves indoor air quality. It is elegant and sophisticated and brings warmth to your living quarters. They take the visual essence of natural light and infused it with a multitude of colors using glass tiles. This method can add pizazz and charm to your decor. There is a vast difference in price range for the many different materials that are used in making wall tiles. You can find ceramic tiles priced between $1.00 and $5.00 per square foot. Depending on your style and budget glass tiles can be as high as $25.00 to $50.00 per square foot. No matter what choice you finally make, wall tiles all produce the same effect. They inject color, interest and excitement to your life and home.

Do you need easy Italian recipes that you can cook up fast that are delicious and inexpensive? Below are three very simple Italian recipes that do not require much time to prepare and only use several ingredients that you may even have on hand. This is the beauty of Italian cooking. You do not need a ton of ingredients to cook up a delicious meal. The key with cooking great Italian food is to use fresh quality ingredients, like fresh herbs and fine olive oil. And the number one most important ingredient in any type of cooking is of course Love! Enjoy and Buon Appetito!

Easy marinara, pesto and olive oil sauces EASY ITALIAN MARINARA SAUCE RECIPE • 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil • 4 garlic cloves, peeled and chopped (More or less depending on how much you like garlic) • 1 35 ounce can of whole plum tomatoes with liquid • Salt to taste • Crushed red pepper to taste (You can use black pepper if you wish) • 10 - 12 fresh basil leaves , torn • 1/2 teaspoon of dried oregano DIRECTIONS: ► Open your can of tomatoes and crush them by hand into a bowl and set aside. ► Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add your garlic to the oil and cook until soft and lightly browned. Be sure to watch the garlic to make sure it doesn’t burn. ► Carefully add the tomatoes along with their liquid into the pan with the garlic and oil. Use caution when adding the tomatoes to the hot oil. The oil can splatter. Add the oregano. ► Stir the mixture and bring to a boil. Season with a bit of salt and red or black pepper. Lower the heat so that the sauce is reduced to a simmer. Break up the tomatoes as it cooks with a spoon until your sauce is chunky. You want the sauce to simmer until thickened, about 20 - 25 minutes. ►Add your fresh basil a few minutes before the sauce is done. Taste the sauce and add more salt or pepper if needed. ► Serve over your favorite pasta. EASY ITALIAN PESTO SAUCE RECIPE • 4 cups fresh basil leaves • 3/4 cup chopped walnuts or pine nuts (the nuts can be lightly toasted in a dry pan before blending for added flavor) • 2 cloves garlic, peeled and chopped (more or less depending on your taste) • 1/2 cup of grated Parmesan cheese • 1/2 cup of extra virgin olive oil • salt and pepper to taste DIRECTIONS: ► Add all ingredients to a food processor or blender except olive oil. Add a little oil at a time and process until sauce reaches desired consistency. Ready to serve in your favorite dish.

EASY PASTA WITH GARLIC, OIL AND FRESH HERBS • 1 pound of spaghetti • 3 - 4 garlic cloves chopped (more or less, depending on how much you like garlic) • 1/2 cup reserved pasta water • 1/4 Cup of Chopped Italian Flat Leaf Parsley • 1/4 cup of chopped fresh basil leaves • 6 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil • Salt to taste • A pinch of red pepper flakes (more or less depending on how spicy you like it) DIRECTIONS: ►In a large pot, bring about 6 quarts of salted water to a rolling boil. Add the pasta and cook for about 6 - 8 minutes or until al dente. Drain but make sure you reserve about 1/2 cup of pasta water. ► While the pasta is cooking, heat 4 tablespoons of olive oil over medium heat in a large skillet. Add the garlic and saute until light brown in color. Remember to pay close attention to the garlic to make sure it doesn’t burn. Remove from heat. ► Stir in fresh herbs, red pepper flakes, and few tablespoons of the reserved pasta water. Mix until combined. ►Transfer the drained pasta to a large serving bowl and mix in the remaining olive oil and pasta water. ► Add the garlic and herb mixture into the pasta and mix well. ► Taste and add salt and red pepper if desired. ► Serve immediately. Top with grated cheese if desired.

Column

Reena Nerbas

March. 20th, 2009

Dear Reena,

Hi Reena,

I own two very furry cats. I always put the toilet seat down when the toilet is not in use but when I lift up the seat it is covered with fur. Seems like fur is attracted to the seat, any tips for how to stop the mess? Nadine

My rug is starting to get bumps in the traffic area of the bedroom and I am having a hard time finding someone to stretch it. Is there anything that I can do to even out these bumps? Our furniture is very heavy and difficult to move. I read your column every week and enjoy it. Thanks for your help, Signed Desperate

Nadine, Wipe the toilet seat with a fabric softener sheet, the fur will no longer be attracted to the area. You can also wipe the outer portion of the toilet with either liquid fabric softener (and rinse) or white vinegar to deter fur cling. Feedback from Nadine: Fabric softener on the toilet seat works like a charm.

Hi Reena, Happy spring days! First of all, I am wondering if your new book is out from the publishers yet. Secondly, I have a tip to share: I have a use for fuzzy ring boxes. They work marvelous for a collector coin such as the poppy coin or the Breast Cancer coin (this is my own tip). Thirdly, I recently bought a house that was shot by a paintball gun enthusiast. The vinyl windows took a few through the screen. The paint on the glass is like soft glue. Windshield washer fluid won’t touch it and if I try to scrape it off with a utility blade, it gums up the blade. I will try WD-40 on a cloth and dab it as I am unsure how the seals around the glass will react to petroleum products. I doubt you have run into this as I believe your family is a lot more respectful than the ones who took aim at this house. I will let you know what works the best. Fourthly, to find out if the seal in your fridge is tight enough; close your fridge door on a $5.00 bill. If you can pull it out very easily the door seals need replacing or the doors need adjusting. That’s it for now. Let me know when your book is out. Yours truly, Allan

Wonderful tips Allan, Household Solutions 3 with Green Alternatives will be available April 2009. As for the paintball mess, paintballs are washable and are designed to dissolve in water, but if left for a long period, traces of dye may become very difficult to remove. If you do decide to use WD-40 (test it on an inconspicuous area first). Leave it on the area for 10 minutes and then use a plastic putty knife to scrape off the paint instead of just wiping it. After removing the paint, use dish soap and water to take away any leftover petroleum residue. Dear Reena, I am storing a car and water got inside. Now I have a half I inch in the interior of the car. How can I clean this and effectively kill the mould? I am also worried about mould in unreachable places like the vents. Tolv Tolv, While wearing a mask and gloves take out every removable part of your car such; as car mats and seat covers. Wash everything with white vinegar and hot water or shampoo. In most cases mould needs a moist environment to thrive therefore if you have access to a wet/dry vacuum, extract as much of the water as possible. Dry the car with a hair dryer and towels. Wash the interior with hot vinegar, a few drops of tea tree oil (found at most grocery stores in the pharmacy section) and water. If you detect musty odour when you turn on your air conditioning or heater, take the car to a dealer and have the air system checked thoroughly. You may need to replace the air filter and get the air conditioner flushed.

Dear Desperate, You will need to call in the professionals to fix this challenge. Several things can cause buckling; improper installation, the wrong cushion, moving furniture or high humidity. When having your carpet re-stretched, be sure all the furniture (I know it’s heavy) is removed from the room and the carpet is power stretched very tightly in all four directions. Wrinkles are unsightly, can create trip hazards, accelerate carpet wear, and cause the carpet to delaminate. Buckling carpet is rarely a result of manufacturing. Lastly, this problem may have occurred because, the carpet was not acclimated to the environment in which it was installed. Cold, stiff carpet cannot be properly stretched, and it will eventually become warm, relax, and loose, regardless of how tightly it was originally stretched.

I enjoy your questions and tips, keep them coming!

Feedback from Amazing Readers

Jensine - 12 years old carried out a science experiment comparing household cleaning products with commercial cleaners. When I emailed her about the results she replied: “The household cleaners did very well compared to brand name. For windows, household cleaners left less streaks than Windex! We used a bunch of other cleaners too. We did experiments on laminate, window, and towels. We only used household cleaners on the windows but the experiments turned out really well”. Jensine Hi Reena, I love your column. I tried the suggestion in your column for cleaning ceramic stove tops using cut grapefruit and baking soda and it worked like a charm - far better than the commercial cleaners made especially for that purpose. Also, having been a chronic hiccuper all my life, a few years ago I found a no-fail cure which you can do by yourself. Fill a wide glass with cold water. Put your head far over a sink and drink non-stop out of the back of the glass (with your chin inside the glass). It works every time. Keep up your great column, Pam Hi Reena, I have found the best cure for hiccups is mixing vinegar with sugar on a spoon and swallowing. When my children were little and had the hiccups - knowing they would hate the idea - I would suggest "the cure" and the shock would stop the hiccups instantly! Julia Hi Reena, In terms of caring for doilies, never iron them. Wash them by hand in the sink; add a few drops of Javex if they have yellowed from age. Wash and rinse well, air dry. Make your own starch: Combine 1 tbsp.cornstarch and 2 cups water. Bring to a boil, cool. Dip doily in solution and then squeeze out water (never wring them out because they will tear). Next pin them onto cardboard (pin each loop or picot all around the outer edge) and let dry. Remove pins. I have done this all my life. Margaret

AUTOMOTIVE

or a great many people there are certain cars that can confer on the driver the status of being a really great driver to be around. There are a few cars that have this ability. New sports cars are found to be in this category. You will find a variety of these cars being produced every year. Of the many different cars you will find are the roadsters, coupes and some exotic cars are even capable of being called spots cars. The main criterion for a car to be known as a sports car is the sleek aerodynamic body that allows the wind to flow around the body of the car. The traction of the wheel will keep the car from flying all over the place as the car moves down roadways at a high velocity. The new sports cars also have the ability to move from a standing point of zero to a hundred plus in a few seconds. You will find that these new sports cars can be affordable or they may be expensive in price range. For these new sports cars the target audience in most cases are those of well to do young adult drivers and young men. For this segment of the population having the ability to drive a sports car is the next best thing to driving their dream car. While many people prefer to drive four wheel drives the sports car lover will look for cars that have a rear wheel drive. These new sports cars will be built with an aggressive and sleek look to the body. These sports cars are designed for two people to hit the road. To make the handling of these cars easier there

is a fantastic braking and superior handling of the new sports cars. The great maneuvering that you will find in these cars is known to be the hallmarks of true sports cars. To make sure that these cars keep up with the technological advances that is constantly being made there are some interesting performance modifications. These modifications are built with a racing style of driving in mind. To keep to the current road rules these new sports cars will allow you to feel the power as they roar through the streets. The companies that manufacture these new sports cars have built these cars with a background in race cars. Their knowledge and experience allow them to make cars that go vary fast yet have the safety margins which are needed by the public. These are all great reasons to buy any of the new sports cars in the market. The real reason is very simple however. This is the feeling of being free of society’s constraints and free to go anywhere you can imagine. An American Classic here are just a handful of classic cars that just about anyone will immediately recognize and the 1957 Chevy Bel Air is one of them. From the classic tail fins to the hooded headlights this model is as much an American icon as parades and apple pie. While the term ‘57 Chevy has come to be used as a catchall phrase for that model year, as though there were just one model, there were actually several different variations of note. It’s interesting to consider that the boys at Chevy wanted to see a totally new design for the 1957 model year. Production problems and setbacks caused them to use the 1955 model design as a base one more time. Imagine how close we were to never seeing this model! The 1957 Chevrolet came in three different main trim packages. The Bel Air was the top of the line luxury package featuring gold anodized trim pieces on the front grill, fenders, hood and trunk lid. The 210 package was a mid-line offering with the 150 package rounding out the line as a base offering. There were several body styles available for the 1957 model year, most of which had an option of the Bel Air trim package. The standard Chevy two and four door sedans were offered as well as a two door and four door Hardtop. Often confused by novice observers are the Sedans and Hardtop or Sport Coupes. The sedan model is easy to spot when you understand that model has upright pillars between the windows while the Hardtop or Sport Coupe does not. Also produced was what they called a Utility Coupe which featured a bench in the back rather than a regular seat for salesmen who needed to carry samples and deliver items. Station wagons were also popular at the time and Chevy offered two variations in ‘57. The Nomad was the high end version with a Bel Air trim package while the Handyman was offered in the 150 and 210 packages. And we can’t forget the famous Chevy Convertible from this year! On top of the many body style variations from this year a ton of different options were available. Air Conditioning and Fuel Injection are perhaps the most notable two of them all however very few were sold. Air conditioning was still considered an unnecessary luxury by most and Fuel Injection was so new that most garages simply did not know how to fix the system. Most 1957 Chevy buyers that year opted for the tried and true carburetor. Other items offered included a “Surround Sound” system for the radio (which consisted of a speaker in the rear of the car), power radio antenna, power brakes and a padded dashboard. This was the same year the ill fated Turboglide transmission was introduced. Unfortunately this tranny had a bad reputation from the start and the vast majority of buyers avoided it. The Turboglide ceased production less than 4 years later. While we think of this car as perhaps the most famous in American history the buying public at the time was not equally impressed. While sales are decent they fell short of expectations. In fact the Ford Motor Company out sold Chevy that year for the first time in over 20 years. Following an interesting trend in classic car market however, the 1957 Chevy remains one of the most sought after models for car collectors the world over. Issue #12

When you drive a car, chances are that not every single road trip that you ever take is going to end well. While most of them will go off without an incident, chances are that at some point in your life you are going to be stranded temporarily and when that moment comes, you need to make sure that there are a number of devices that you keep in your car to help you get through it. Here are some suggestions to get your started along the road to being prepared for anything that might come your way.

◊ BLANKETS Even in the warmest climates of the world there are cold nights. The tropical areas of the world in particular have people in them that are susceptible to cold weather and when your car breaks down, chances are that you might have to say in it overnight if you are in an area where emergency response time is lower than normal. During this period of staying outside in the cold weather, blankets can keep you warm and potentially save you from hypothermia.

Membership Info for Auto Clubs Emergency roadside assistance is one of the major benefits inherent to auto club membership, but if you really need it then you need to be able to prove that you are a member of that specific auto club. The best way to do this is to carry your membership information with you wherever you happen to go.

◊ METHOD OF CONTACT You want to keep some sort of contact method in your car at all times. If you carry a cell phone, then that can be your method of contact. Alternatively, you can have a service installed in your car that allows you to communicate at the push of a button. Whatever method you use, having a way to contact someone if you are in a car accident is extremely important and should not be ignored.

◊ FLASHLIGHT

◊ OTHER ITEMS

At the same time that you are going to be in cold weather during the night, you might also find that you are on an area of road that is not well lit. There are many such roads in existence in the world today and the only way that you can fix the problem is to bring a flashlight with you. Flashlights are extremely inexpensive nowadays and can really help you out when you’re in a jam.

The above items that were mentioned constitute the things that you absolutely should have in your car in case anything does go wrong. However, other items such as recreational items are also a good idea depending on the people you normally ferry. Those items are however personal decisions as to whether you want them or not, while the items mentioned above are absolute must haves.

◊ FIRST AID KIT If you or someone you know is in the car during an accident, then there is a chance that the person might get injured. While most automobile accidents are minor and do not result in any injuries, having a first aid kit on hand to treat injuries that might arise is something that can mean the difference between life and death. It costs you practically nothing to keep a first aid kit handy, just in case.

◊ AIR PUMP One of the most common road problems in today’s world is a flat tire and an air pump can help you put air back into the tire. While

Issue #12

an air pump can not fix a flat tire, it can at least temporarily put air back into it so that you can drive it to the closest repair station.

If you’re like most of us, or maybe I should say if you’re like me, the way you choose what new tires you should purchase for your car is by reading the label on the side of your existing car tires. After comparing the prices of the compatible tires with the amount of money in your tire budget, then a choice can be made. But is it the right choice? I mean, if you have no idea what the label on your tire means or what you are purchasing, you could really be leaving out a whole new world of tire options. Okay, a typical car tire label reads something like this “P185/60R 14 82H.” In this little car label “sentence” there is a wealth of information. But it doesn’t do you any good if you haven’t the slightest idea of what it all means. So, if you’re like me, this guide to car tire language can come in quite handy on your next trip to the automotive department. The first letter on the tire label indicates what type of vehicle the tire is intended for: P is for passenger car, LT is for light truck, and T is for your temporary or spare tire. The numbers immediately following, “185” in this label, is the section width of the tire in millimeters. Shorter or narrower tires have lower numbers. The numbers immediately following the slash indicate the tire’s aspect ratio, which is translated as the section height as percentage of the section width. In lay’s terms, this tire’s height is 60 percent of its width. Performance tires would have a lower number in this space. The next letter stands for the tire’s type. In this case, “R” stands for radial. The 14 immediately following is the wheel rim diameter in inches. The next number in the label, “82,” stand for the tire’s load index. According to the Maximum Load-Carrying Capacity chart, a set of four of these tires could safely support a vehicle weighing 4,188 pounds. The final letter stands for the amount of traveling speeds that the tire is capable of sustaining safely under optimal driving conditions. “The speed ratings are S for up to 112 mph, H for up to 130 mph, V for up to 150 mph, Z for 150 mph+. At high speeds, the tire can get very hot and the tread can separate from the belts. The speed ratings tell you how fast you can go and still be safe. When selecting tires for your car or motorcycle you should also pay attention to some other tire qualities which may effect your car or motorcycles performance or the durability of your tires. While the most important considerations for you to consider when purchasing new tires will be the tread type, size and mileage warranty, do not hesitate to ask questions if your dealer uses a term that you are unfamiliar with. After all, it’s your money and you want the safest most durable tires for your dollar. Most of the tire size and speed ratings are the same for car and motorcyle tires but always refer to your owners manual. While some of you might see construction equipment as hammers, saws, and other smaller items they are in fact construction tools. Are you looking for some construction equipment to help you with your next job? If so you need to know a little bit about the equipment available.

CRANES:

You can have many types of canes from the all terrain hydraulic crane, to the boom truck. A boom truck is a piece of construction equipment that has a flat bed with a crane on it rather than a smaller cab for the crane with tracks. This crane system can be used to haul the material as well as move the crane about while hydraulic cranes tend to need a trailer and then roll off to be placed on the ground. These types of cranes tend to rotate 360 degrees.

EXCAVATORS:

These are consider bobcats, and backhoes of the construction equipment. The size you will need is again dependent upon the job you will have. Most construction companies have a variety for the type of work and land they will have. Bobcats usually work out well when you have a little job, where as backhoes are great for digging larger holes.

LOADERS:

The are also many types of loaders from a front end loader to a wheel loader. Loaders are often seen used for road construction as well as other construction jobs. These are tractors that have a bucket on the front and use a hydraulic system to raise the bucket and dump the material either in a dump truck or off to the side. Construction equipment is important whether you work on housing sites or road construction. The equipment you choose will depend on the type of work you do and will also be determined by the terrain you work on. What are Forklifts? an introduction

forklifts can only carry and consider, at all times, the forlklift’s weight capacity. Forklift operators must also know how to drive and handle forklift’s rear steering wheel effectively. Driving a forklift is easy and can be compared to driving your own car in reverse, meaning forklift operators should constantly steer to make sure he is moving in a straight line. Forklift operators must also be aware at all times of the forklift’s ever changing center of gravity to avoid dangerous sharp turns and to avoid going too fast. Before anyone can operate a forklift, he has to be fully trained a licensed. Forklifts have significantly lessen the stress of warehouse work. Because of forklifts, it is now possible that a single person can move the heaviest of cargos at once. Properly-maintained and safely operated forklifts will surely make lifting and transporting cargos of your company infinitely stress-free. About the Author: Written by Benard Worseley Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/trucks-articles/what-are-forkliftsan-introduction-763294.html If you have a warehouse then you would most likely need one or two forklifts. Forklifts are a kind of machine capable of lifting things that weigh thousands of pounds. Forklifts resemble a small truck with two metal forks on its front that are used to lift very heavy cargos. Forklift operators should move forklifts forward until its forks can under the cargo, lifting the cargo in the air by moving the forks. Forklifts forks are also called blades or tines and are normally made out of steel. It is capable of lifting up a few tons. Depending on your preference, you can choose a forklift that is powered by gasoline, propane or electricity. If you are choosing an electric forklift then you should know that it relies on batteries for it to run perfectly. Electric forklift, however, are hard to maintain and its fuel may cost you a lot. Many companies like electric forklift because it doesn’t give of harmful fumes like gas powered machines do. Some forklifts are not only used indoors but also outdoors. Rough terrain forklifts are designed to be used outside having the capability to lift the heaviest of cargos. It usually operates on gasoline but you can also find some that operates on diesel and natural gas. Rough terrain forklifts also have heavy duty tires making it possible to be driven on rough surfaces outdoors. Following safety precautions when using a forklift is vital to the safety of a forklift operator. Forklift operators have to be careful not to go beyond what

 SIGN UP FOR A HANDS-ON SAFETY TRAINING COURSE A safety training course enables riders to learn how to control their ATVs in typical situations – and in most cases, most ATV drivers who have gone through such courses have a lower injury risks compared to those with no formal or proper training.  WEAR YOUR PROTECTIVE GEARS! Many a time, ATV injuries are head injuries and unless you want to risk “losing your head” while you are enjoying a ride on your ATV, always make sure that you wearing your helmet. Wearing a helmet when you are riding your ATV reduces the severity of head injuries, in the event of an unforeseen accident. We also highly recommend that you wear over-the-ankle boots, goggles, gloves, long pants and long sleeved shirts to protect yourself against unnecessary cuts and injuries from rocks, trees as well as other kinds of debris.  TWO IS A CROWD ON AN ATV Most ATVs are designed for one person (meaning the rider) only and this means that passengers are not allowed. ATVs drivers must be able to shift their weight freely in all directions while they are riding and it is important that the drivers are able to maintain a safe control over their ATVs, especially on varying terrains and having a passenger will make it difficult for drivers to control their ATVs.

cost you your life if you collide with cars or other vehicles. There have been reports of many fatalities involving ATVs that occur on paved roads. Be smart, ride your ATV on off paved road!

RECREATIONAL VEHICLES

ATVs are gaining a great popularity among youths, adults as well as children. Hence, the knowledge of ATV safety should be growing as well. While the CPSC is committed to doing its part in promoting the safety issues of an ATV, the consumers, parents, manufacturers, dealers and retailers must also work hand in hand on this issue too. Here are some ATV safety tips for you – in case you have long forgotten about them.

 CHILDREN SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED ON ADULT ATVS If you want your children to ride on an ATV, get them to ride on the youth ATVs instead of an adult ATV. About one third of ATV related deaths and injuries involving children are those who were driving or riding on an adult ATV. If your child is under 16 years of age, we encourage you to forbid them from riding an adult ATV. Instead, have them ride on something that they will have better control of – the youth ATVs. NEVER RIDE ATVS UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF ALCOHOL OR DRUGS It goes without saying that if you are under the influence of alcohol or drugs, you should never get behind any wheels – be it a car or an ATV. Alcohol and drugs messes up your reaction time and judgment – so stay off ATVs if you have consumed either one. ATVs are not toys, and if you adhere to all the safety measures while you ride on one, you can be sure that you will be able to have fun and arrive safely. It’s all about knowledge and putting them into practice. If you want to put in your 2-cents worth about ATV safety, you can do so at the forum discussion board at www.jackel.com or www. atvoutdoors.net Gear up and ride safely! About the Author: Written by Ray Martin Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/extremesports-articles/how-much-do-you-know-your-atv-safetytips-138508.html

 ATV = OFF ROAD RIDING Tempting as it may be, but one should never ride an ATV on paved roads. The designs of ATVs are not made for paved road riding. Riding an ATV on paved roads could

Owning a boat is just the beginning. In order to get your new boat from one location to another, you’re going to need a boat trailer. In fact, boat trailers come in many different styles and weight capacities, so a little research in advance will help you make the right decision when it comes to deciding what kind of boat trailer you need. Boat trailers come in several styles and are made of different materials. Some are made of aluminum and have certain weight capacity limits. Some are designed for inboard boats only, while others are designed for larger, outboard craft. Most boat trailers purchased at a boating supply warehouse can hold up to 15,000 pounds, but always check specifications before purchasing one. Many boat yards offer one-size-fits-all boat trailers, but try to avoid the temptation of saving a few dollars to buy such a generic boat trailer. Purchasing boat trailers to specifically fit your boat will prevent slippage, wear and tear and possibly more severe damage when towing back and forth. Boat trailers can be called many different things, such as Easy Loader boat trailers, or Magic Tilt or Fast-Load boat trailers. Each boat trailer is designed and made with one specific boat model in mind, so be choosy when it comes time to narrow down your boat trailer search to just the right fit for your boat. Some boat trailers are totally submersible while others aren’t. Floating style boat trailers offer aluminum I-beam designs as well as catamaran storage cradles and boat lifts. Fast load boat trailers offer single axle, tandem axle in both ‘regular’ and heavy-duty designs, as well as triple axle models. Some boat trailers come with rollers, bunks or boards, and deciding which one is best for you and your boat isn’t easy. Experience loading and unloading your boat will often have a big impact on decisions about which type of boat trailers to purchase, so if you’re a novice, you may want to head for your local boating dealer and ask some pertinent questions.

About the Author: Written by Candice Sabrina Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/sports-and-fitness-articles/the-rightboat-trailer-can-protect-your-boat-from-hazards-119446.html

Price ranges of various boat trailers also depends on which type you want, its construction materials and whether or not you have your boat trailer customized. Many people customize a generic boat trailer to their boats, while others opt to have such customization done upon ordering. Boat trailers can cost hundreds to thousands of dollars, so make sure to check around on brand names and prices when narrowing down your search. When thinking of purchasing boat trailers, make sure that your vehicle is able to pull the weight of both trailer and boat when loaded. You’d be amazed at how many people don’t take the combined weight of the two into consideration when buying. For this reason, many professional boaters opt to purchase aluminum style boat trailers, as they are more lightweight than galvanized steel and are also easier to keep clean and shiny. Owning a boat can be a lot of fun, but it’s also an expensive hobby, or sport, or business accessory. No matter what you’re using your boat for, boat trailers are a necessary piece of boating equipment, and finding the right one for your skills and your boat is essential.

for Landing Your Fish

Locating and hooking a fish on a lure or on natural bait is usually the toughest problem in fishing, but after the fish is hooked there’s also the important job of boating or landing it. In doing this, experience is the best teacher; the best way to learn how to play and land a fish is by hooking many of them.

especially true when fishing in a strong tide or current. Of course, you should never tighten the drag so much that no line will come off. With a spinning reel it is often safer to apply pressure to the reel spool with your finger than to tighten the knob which increases the drag tension.

However, there are some tips and hints which can be studied in advance so that you won’t be fumbling and groping in the dark.

The same principle applies when you are using a conventional rod and reel. When you are fishing for big fish the drag should always be set well below the strength of the line. The longer the runs made by a particular fish, the lighter the drag setting should be. During a fight the rod should always be held up so that the strain and shock will be taken by the rod tip. Never point the rod at the fish or let it rest on the gunwale of the boat.

Playing and boating or landing small fish is often no problem and with a strong line and a stiff rod you can usually merely tighten the drag and reel them in. But when you are fishing with light rods, thin lines and for big fish you must be careful not to strain your tackle. Naturally, broken lines, straightened hooks and even a snapped rod or two are all part of the game and even top-notch anglers encounter them from time to time, but the idea is not to let this happen too often. When fishing with a spinning outfit you usually use a light line with the right drag setting. This is very important. One way to set the drag is to run your line through the guides on the rod, tie it to a stationary object, such as a pole or a tree, and then start backing up and letting line off the reel spool until you are at least 75 or 100 ft. from the end of the line Next, you tighten the drag a bit and back up, holding the rod tip high. Keep backing up and tightening the drag until the rod takes its maximum bend. When this happens try backing up again. The line should slip off the spool but not too freely. When fishing for fish which, when hooked, start off with long, fast runs, you need a fairly light drag. If a fish tends to take out a lot of line you may even have to loosen the drag still more. When you are fishing from a boat and you hook a big fish on light tackle it may be necessary either to follow the fish to keep it from taking too much line or to regain some line while the fish is resting.

The most crucial time in fighting a fish is when it is near the boat or the shore, almost ready for the gaff. Here the angler shouldn’t tighten his drag but should be set for a sudden run when the fish sees the boat or the first attempt at gaffing is missed. Gaffing is a job for a man with steady nerves and quick reflexes. Always wait until the fish is near the boat and thoroughly played out. Gaffing a big fish when it is still green is dangerous - you can be pulled overboard. Also, a wild run or leap can break the line. With these few guidelines in mind, you should be able to land that fish every time! On the other hand, when you have a fish near the boat or shore ready for boating or landing, you often have to tighten the drag a bit in order to bring him in. This is

Issue #12

In fishing, trout are one of the favorite “fishing friends” of most anglers. These crafty fish are abundant anywhere. The native habitat of these crafty fish depends on the type of trout. For brook trout, the native habitat includes the territory from Labrador westward to the Saskatchewan, while the rainbow trout is a native of the Pacific slope from Alaska to California. In trout fishing, there are some factors that need to be considered in order to have a successful catch. 1. FOR TROUT FISHING, the leader should not be greased. It will not sink far enough to cause any difficulty when picking the line and lure from the water, but if it is allowed to float; it will cast a shadow on the bottom of the stream which may scare the trout. 2. THE TROUT IS ONE of the fishes that are usually secured through the use of the dry fly. For trout, the current as well as the pools should be fished. It may sometimes be a bit difficult to keep the fly from sinking or dragging because of the various conditions of the current, but this is a matter that the angler will have to figure out for himself. 3. IT IS NOT GOOD PRACTICE when fishing for trout to fish directly upstream so the flies, line, and leader will float directly over fish. The fisherman should make the cast from one side of the stream so the fly will only float over the fish. 4. IT IS IMPORTANT TO MAKE the first cast the best. A feeding trout will usually strike the first lure presented if it is cast so that it will float over his private domain. The angler should never fail to fish the lower end of the pool first even if the trout are rising in the middle or upper end. 5. TROUT ARE SOMETIMES very moody or selective and will try the patience of any angler; hence, possibly a fly with less hackle will do the trick or it may be necessary to use a spent-wing fly or a fan wing. Indeed, catching trout fishes can be lots of fun. The anglers just have to remember these tips in order to have a happy catch.
