accessorize

your kitchen

Just like a nice outfit, your kitchen can benefit from accessories! If you are thinking about redecorating but don’t have a lot of dough to put into your kitchen, try simply adding some accessories in a matching theme or color and see how it transforms the room! Now before you rush out to the store, you should probably decide what sort of theme you are going for. Do you want the look of old Italy? How about a cottage theme? Why not try a country style kitchen? You will want to buy different accessories depending on the theme you choose. If you can’t quite put your finger on exactly what you want, look in magazines and decorating books or surf the internet to get a flavor of the accessories you would like to see in your kitchen. Once you have found a style you like, you can purchase accessories close to those you see in the magazine or book. Color choices, of course, should compliment the main color in the room.

Once you have decided on the look you want, don’t feel like you have to run out and buy everything that day. Take your time and shop around for those perfect pieces. Try antique stores, consignment shops or flea markets for ideas. Accessories can make or break the look of your kitchen so be creative and trust your instincts!

Sometimes, you can just rearrange the accessories you already have to create a whole different look. It is recommended to group your accessories in odd numbers rather than even numbers. Different heights and textures are also attractive. Hanging artwork or decorative plates, trays or other wall art in your kitchen can really add to the ambiance, but did you know that most people do not know how to hang wall decor properly? The rule of thumb is that a picture of piece of wall decor should be hung so that the middle of the piece is at eye level. Art work should be placed no more than seven to ten inches above a table. Grouping wall decor in geometric shapes such as rectangles, triangles or circles adds interest. Bakers racks or open cupboards are too cluttered in most kitchens. If you are using it to store cookbooks, vary the heights of books with the tallest in the middle and avoid putting small books next to tall books. Removing the dust covers can often make the books look more appealing. You can also decorate the shelves with candles, family pictures, fancy bowls, baskets or pantry boxies in odd number groupings of 1, 3 or 5 pieces. Place a plant on the top shelf for balance. Certain accessories can give your kitchen a gourmet feel. Hanging copper pots and pans from a wire rack attached to the ceiling can add warmth and color. Don’t be afraid to hang plants from any bare ceiling corner to give a lived in feeling to a plain kitchen. Growing herbs in a decorative container on the windowsill can be a great way to add interest and improve your cooking. Accessorize your counter tops with canisters or cooking utensils. A large bowl of fruit on the kitchen table can be fresh or artificial.

Buying a new home is usually a special event in everyone’s lives. The excitement builds even more as the contract possession date gets closer and closer. Finally you’re handed the keys. You unlock the door to your home for the first time, only to find an absence of color and furnishings. Apart from feeling empty, the blank palette can be confusing and overwhelming if you don’t take the time to think your decorating process through. So the big question is, “where do you start?” There are many things you can do to bring out the style, character and functionality of your home. When it comes to style and color, most people typically know what they like and what they dislike. One of the first things to do is to determine your lifestyle. Do you have an active family, need a quiet place to read, or invite friends over casual or formal entertaining? Determine how many friends you’ll be entertaining at one time so that seating arrangements are also taken into consideration. If you frequently have overnight guests, you’ll also need to plan for appropriate accommodations.

Once you have your basic floor plan sketched, you need to determine the traffic flow in each room of your home. Furniture should be kept out of the traffic flow area to allow for easy access in and out of each room. You should also allow 1 to 3 feet of clearance around furniture groups such as sofa and coffee table for easier mobility. If you draw your furniture pieces to scale you can try a variety of arrangements on paper until you come up with something that works for you. It’s much easier than hauling your furniture back and forth for 3 to 4 hours. Now that you’ve considered furniture placement and you have a good idea what pieces will reside in each room, it’s a good time to decide on color. Color is the most powerful decorating tool used and is the first thing we respond to when we enter a room. Make sure you view paint swatches at various times of the day and in different areas of the room. The color variation may surprise you.

The next item on your list should be to decide how you want your home to feel. Do you want your environment to feel spacious, elegant or casual? Is your personal style country, urban, contemporary or shabby chic? There are many styles to choose from, depending on your own personal taste. If you take the time to determine the overall look, your home will be a more comfortable place to be and will also serve to be a reflection of your personality.

Now that the labor-intensive work is done, it’s time to put the “icing on the cake”. Accessories are the wonderful things that transform a house into your home. They bring unity to your color scheme, theme, mood and style. And if they’re unique, they can be a great conversation piece. Buy pieces that catch your eye and inspire you. After all, you’re the one who has to live with them. Just remember not to “over-accessorize”. Too many accessories can overpower a room to the extent that the focal point is completely lost.

One of the most frequent steps that homeowners usually forget about is setting up your floor plan. You should take a bit of time to decide what you need and ensure that it fits in the appropriate place in your home. To do this, you’ll need to sketch out a floor plan. It sounds like a lot of work, but it will prevent you from purchasing furniture that you either don’t need or won’t fit in your home. To ensure accuracy of your floor plan, use graph paper scaled to ¼ inch. The standard floor plan measurement is ¼ inch equals 1 foot. Once you measure each room (length and width), mark off the correct number of squares on your grid (each grid equals one foot). Don’t forget to include the location of windows, door openings, door swings, fireplaces, outlets and switches. Your furniture placement will be based on the location of these items.

toast to the perfect rack With most homes becoming short on space, adding a metal wine rack that hangs from your wall or ceiling makes all the difference. You now have storage space for your treasured bottles of wine as well as an aesthetic appeal. These wall racks provide us with three separate functions such as wine storage, visual decor and open work space facilitation. A wine rack is to wine as hands are to arms. They are an extension and a useful tool for your wine collection. Metal wine racks are a sensible decision when selecting a good way to store and protect your wine collection. The very nature of the metal makes them durable, sturdy and long lasting. Since the material is metal it is often twisted into sculptures or designs unobtainable by traditional wood wine racks. These designs are then forged at high heats so the wine rack metal is almost indestructible. It requires minimal cleaning just soap and water and can be polished or dulled depending on the owners desires. They are always artistic in design and a great conversation piece. Most home owners display them prominently around the home for visual appreciation and pleasure. Adding one to a residence can heighten the homes value and distinguish it from other homes. It can also help keep wine fresh, undisturbed and easy to access when you need it. Wine lovers will find these racks appealing and fairly priced regardless of the choice of rack.

bottle. Some pieces have artfully crafted shaped vines that hold bottles in their proper position not only for decorative purposes but for functional attributes. This feature is ideal for choosing high quality racks. Genuine metal wine racks make their best impression if presented in their natural color or in colors of artificially oxidized patina surface. The highest value of metal wine racks lies in its ability to keep its beauty for centuries, and not becoming a victim of daily trends. You must ensure that the wall mounted metal wine wrack hanging from your wall is safely anchored into studs. What is important to consider is the weight the rack can safely carry. You do not want the weight of the bottles to pull it from the wall. It would be most devastating to find your wine bottles shattered on the floor. This decorative accessory allows you to be surrounded by elegance and gives you the security to age your collection with confidence. So now let’s all raise our glass and make a toast to the perfect wine rack!

Wall mounted metal wine racks are perfect when space is at a premium or when you wish to display a special collection above a buffet or side table. They are designed to provide the required bottle tilt for cork protection and most feature a no-roll shelving for stability. They all offer endless possibilities in terms of style and versatility. In my dinning room I created a dramatic focal point that incorporated additional pieces of metal art work. I chose two pieces of metal art work of similar color and texture from my wine rack and mounted them on both sides of the display. It looked exceptionally impressive and everyone that sees it comments on the beauty and artistic flow of the room. Wrought iron wine racks are some of the most traditional metal wine racks. They can be simple and elegant with straight clean lines or gracefully curvy. Wine racks made from chrome or steel are perfect for modern decor. Solid in its construction metal, wine racks will hold the weight of several wine bottles with ease and provide a visual creative conversation piece. A popular spot for a metal wine rack has become over a kitchen island where it can stay out of the way but still adds drama to the room. Because of its highly skilled design and craftsmanship you will be looking to show off this piece just as much as your wine collection. Wine racks are offered in a wide variety of styles, shapes and dimensions to fit just about anyone’s specifications and decor style. They are available in a plethora of sizes to hold from one bottle to hundreds of bottles. A very important part of choosing a wine rack is the way the bottles are placed. Only choose one that will hold the bottles in a downward position. This is an important feature since wine should be stored with the neck pointing down in an effort to keep the cork from drying out and allowing air to permeate the

Beautify Your Surroundings he wall mounted aquarium hangs like a framed piece of art, but encompasses live fish. It is easy to see and enjoy your fish as they are mounted at eye level. With its ingenuity and eye pleasing design, as well as limited maintenance, the wall aquarium will become the centerpiece of conversation. Your home will receive a vibrant kick to the aesthetics from this moving picture on your wall. We are just beginning to understand how stress affects our health and how important it is to relax. One of the many benefits that a wall mounted aquarium provides is its effect on a persons mind, body and spirit. Tranquility and harmony takes over and will help reduce your stress and improve your health. The aquarium will have an over all calming effect. They are made with half tempered safety glass in an ordinary tank. They hang on ordinary wall studs and do not take up valuable floor or cabinet space. They are available in various colors and sizes from as small as two feet wide up to thirty feet wide. A small aquarium can weigh seventy five to one hundred pounds when full and a large one can weigh close to three hundred pounds when full of water. They also come with a beautiful scenic background or you may design one yourself. Some color options for finishes are natural grain, mahogany, cherry, red walnut, oak, black and stainless steel. Wall mounted aquariums are sure to please any level of experience from a fish hobbyist to an active fish keeper. An important advantage of wall mounted aquariums, from a regular tank, is if you have small children or pets they are mounted out of reach. Accidents can happen and at least you can be reassured that this tank can’t be tipped over. You can purchase fresh water and salt water aquariums. The advantage here is fresh water tanks. They are easier to maintain and the fish are less expensive. Salt water fish colors are beautiful, but they usually are large and this becomes an issue with this type of tank. I would suggest you consider having a professional install the wall mounted aquarium. The advantage is that all the cables and equipment can be professionally hidden. All you will have to do is add your fish and plants. If you choose the installation yourself, the filters and heater come already installed. You need to set the heater by simply turning a dial. With steel brackets securely fix and level your aquarium then carefully slide onto the brackets. Once the aquarium is mounted you can fill it right away with lime free water. The aquarium comes with water treatments that will condition the water. You then turn it on and let the aquarium sit for five days. To let the filters mature, start adding about five fish every week until your tank is fully stocked. It is very important that you be patient and introduce the fish in small amounts rather then all at once. That would be a recipe for disaster. The wall mounted aquarium limits your fish selection to smaller fish. The fish size is limited to the width of the tank. There are numerous companies that have websites online devoted to selling wall mounted aquariums. There are some that offer options custom made to your specifications. Reena Nerbas

March. 13th, 2009

Dear Reena,

Dear Reena,

I would appreciate it very much if you could tell me how to get creases out of carpet. I have a carpet at my front door entrance and a carpet runner down the hallway. The carpets are on top of another carpet and they continually fold and have creases in them. I’ve tried to iron them but that doesn’t work. Can you suggest any ideas? Great column, thanks for your help, Ed

Do you have a solution to clean the surface of a newer ceramic stove top? I have tried vinegar. Stephen

Hi Ed, The simplest solution is to bring the rugs outside on a sunny day for about 8 hours; direct sunlight will help them release tension naturally. This is helpful because both carpets will then be easier to roll in the opposite direction, doing this is a fast way to force textiles to lay flat. Caution should be taken because you may hear a cracking sound, if this is the case stop rolling and place a heavy piece of furniture on top. If creases remain have the carpets steamed, if you choose to hire a professional to complete this task the expert should be able to tell you whether the creases can be fixed or whether the problem is a structural issue with too much or not enough tension within the skeleton of the rug. A professional may be able to release the tension by securing a small bed of nails approximately the size of the rug. The expert will then dampen the rugs and stretch them onto the bed of nails until dry. Starch may be added to the back of the rugs to reinforce rigidity in the rugs. Hello Reena, For years I have been hearing about the benefits of eating dark chocolate and so, after eating milk chocolate for most of my life, I made the switch to dark chocolate. Can you tell me if all dark chocolate is created equally? Brendan Brendan, I still remember where I was the day that I learnt chocolate was healthy; I framed the newspaper article and hung it above my desk so that I could look at it everyday as I engulfed my daily chocolate intake. Then reality set in and I realized that like most things in life, if it sounds too good to be true you better check it out. I read study after study proving that dark chocolate can lower blood pressure, decrease inflammation and make your blood less sticky potentially reducing the risk of a heart attack. The key factor in healthy chocolate is flavanol content found in the cocoa bean. Flavanols are natural compounds with antioxidant properties. If you want healthy chocolate; before purchasing your next dark chocolate bar look for chocolate that has at least 60% to 70% cocoa listed on the front of the package. Lastly, remember that all chocolate has calories whether it’s milk or dark, so moderation is still the key (unfortunately). Of course I would never have spent so much reading the research if it were about brussel sprouts.

Stephen, There are ceramic stove top cleaners available on the market, but the easiest way to clean your stove top is with a little tool sold at most places where ceramic tops are sold. This little tool is shaped like a razor blade and takes off stains left from cooking. Oddly enough the blade does not damage the stove.

Feedback from Readers: Dear Reena, Your column is a wealth of information and I have a hint to add. Paintbrushes are not just for painting! I dampen them with soap and water and use them for dusting crevices, grill areas and around door knobs. I choose soft or firm brushes depending on the job to be done. Works well! Mary

I enjoy your questions and tips, keep them coming! Fabulous Tip of the Week: Hey honey, got a splinter? Honey naturally draws out splinters. Smear a layer of honey on the area and cover it with a band-aid just before bed. By morning the splinter should be closer to the surface of the skin making extraction a piece of cake. Hi Reena, I know that you are a big fan of baking soda and have sighted many uses for it in both of your books. I have another use for baking soda, I use it to cure my hiccups but the taste isn’t to my liking. Do you have any other suggestions for curing hiccups? Arden Arden, Baking soda is one of those underappreciated products that I lovingly refer to in my books as a “Household Superstar”. It helps deodorize, unclog drains, remove stains, cure bad breath and the list goes on and on. However, when it comes to curing hiccups my favorite solution is water (although 1 tsp. of peanut butter or Nutella chocolate spread are also fast and effective but the hiccups tend to return). I received this tip from a retired school teacher and it works great! Using your hands, plug your ears and nose. Have someone hold a cup of water to your mouth. Take 12 sips of water and the hiccups will vanish!

Dear Reena, I made chocolate cupcakes and in the oven, the cupcakes had risen to a good level. However when I took them out they sunk in. Can you tell me what I can do next time to avoid this? Sylvia Sylvia, This usually happens if the heat of the oven is too high. It’s best to reduce the temperature by at least 25 degrees and also to raise the rack a bit higher in the oven.

for your basement

$1000.00/Week

Refinishing or refurbishing your basement is a big job that can be costly and challenging. But gaining the added living space is often valuable enough to warrant the effort. One of the most important parts of redoing your basement is the floor. Whether you are working with a concrete or wooden floor, you may want to consider another type of flooring that will prove more durable and easy to clean. When you are giving thought to which choice will work best for your home, consider the following information with respect to a file floor for your basement. 1. A TILE FLOOR IS RELATIVELY inexpensive conpared to other types of flooring. Depending on the grade and style you buy, you might be able to get the peel-and-stick brand that you can lay down yourself instead of hiring it done. This will suit not only your wallet but your schedule, since it can be done in stages, as you have the time, and perhaps with the help of a friend or family member. Of course, you can get the more costly styles, and pay more, for a richer or more polished look, depending on your plans for the basement’s use. 2. TILE IS REPLACEABLE, so if one or more pieces should get stained, chipped, or torn, you can take them up and lay down new ones at your convenience. Instead of waiting for a service call from someone who only works weekends for double-time pay, you can do it yourself in time for the next party or family get-together. 3. TILE FLOORING IS EASY TO CLEAN. You don’t have to worry as much about spilled beverages, pet accidents, or

muddy shoes tracking through. Just fill a bucket with hot water and mild detergent, or whatever the tile manufacturer’s directions suggest, and mop up dirt, dust, and debris in a few minutes’ time.

4. TILE IS EASILY CHANGED. If you get tired of the design and want to change it, or decide to put down carpet when you get an unexpected monetary windfall, you can make the switch fairly quickly and easily. Some people decide to lay carpet on top of the tile, which makes it easier than taking up the old and putting down the new floor covering.

5. TILE PATTERNS ARE VERSATILE. You can choose a basic monotone color to blend in with neutral surroundings. Or buy a contemporary design to turn your basement into a family recreation room. A more sedate, intricate pattern provides a nice floor covering for a room that will become your den or a spare bedroom. Throw down a few accent rugs (the non-skid variety) and enjoy the brand new look.

Are you always in a hurry? Do you wish the world would slow down and let you catch up? If so, you are not alone. But life isn’t going to slow down to allow you to catch up! One way you can enjoy more down time is to cut time in the kitchen. Yes, in the kitchen! Forget going through the fast-food drive-thru lanes and prepare your family a real meal. Here are a couple of recipes to help you get dinner on the table in a matter of minutes.

Crab Cakes With Lime Sauce and Easy Corn Chowder CRAB CAKES WITH LIME SAUCE

EASY CORN CHOWDER

This recipe goes together in about 15 minutes. Cooking time is 8 to 10 minutes.

• 6 slices bacon, fried crisp and crumbled • 1 cup chopped onion • 1 green bell pepper, chopped • 2 1/2 cups milk • 2 cans (approx. 15 oz. ea) diced potatoes, drained • 1 can (15 oz) creamed corn • 1 can (15 oz) whole-kernel corn • 1/2 tsp fresh ground black pepper • 1/8 tsp red pepper • 1/4 tsp salt • 2 cups chicken broth

• 1 medium lime • 1 cup mayonnaise • 1 envelope dry Italian Seasoning Mix • 2 tbsps Dijon Mustard • 2 cans (6-oz each) crabmeat, drained and flaked • 25 Ritz-style crackers, finely crushed, divided • 2 tbsps chopped green onion • 1/4 cup sour cream

Saute the onion and bell pepper in the bacon drippings cooking until tender. Remove to a large saucepan or small stockpot, scraping the skillet to get all the flavor. Add the diced potatoes, creamed corn, whole-kernel corn and seasonings. Slowly stir in the milk until well blended. Add the chicken broth. Heat over low heat until thoroughly heated through but do not boil.

Grate the lime peel and squeeze juice from the lime. Mix half the juice, half the mayonnaise, the salad dressing mix, and the mustard in a medium bowl. Stir until well blended. Add the crabmeat, half the cracker crumbs, and the onion. Mix together lightly. Shape into 16 patties, about 1/2-inch thick. Coat the patties with the remaining cracker crumbs. Spray a large skillet with nonstick vegetable oil spray. Cook patties, in batches, over medium heat about 2 minutes or until browned on each side and heated through. Meanwhile, mix remaining mayonnaise, lime juice, lime peel, and sour cream together in a small bowl. Mix to blend together well. Serve crab cakes with a dollop of the sour cream sauce over the top. LAMB AND POTATO SALAD Serves: 6

PORTOBELLO MUSHROOM WITH SAUSAGE Serves: 6

• 6 large portobello mushrooms, stems removed • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 1/2 pound Italian sausage, casings removed • 1/2 cup prepared marinara sauce • 1/2 cup mozzarella cheese, grated • Preheat barbecue on MEDIUM. • Wipe the outside of the mushrooms with a damp cloth. Using a teaspoon, scrape out some of the black “gills” on the underside of the mushrooms. Brush the mushrooms lightly on both sides with olive oil. • Crumble sausage in a small skillet and cook over medium heat (on your side burner if you have one) until it is lightly browned. Drain off any excess fat. • Place the mushrooms, gill side down on the cooking grids. Grill for 2-3 minutes until some of the juices are released. Turn and sprinkle with sausage, marinara sauce and mozzarella cheese. • Continue grilling for 2-3 minutes until the cheese is melted and the mushroom is tender.

• 3 lbs. lamb llets • 1/4 cup vegetable oil • 2 cloves garlic, minced • 1 cup fresh mint, chopped • 2 lbs. baby new potatoes, scrubbed • 2 red peppers, roasted and chopped • 1 lb. asparagus, blanched and chopped • 2 tablespoons fresh chives, chopped • 1/3 cup lime juice • 1/2 cup olive oil • 4 egg yolks • 2 tablespoons olive oil • Steam the new potatoes on the side burner until tender, then drain. If the potatoes are larger than bite sized, cut them into halves or quarters as appropriate. Set aside. • Blanch the asparagus on the side burner, plunge into ice water, then drain on paper towel lined wire racks. Set aside. • Preheat the barbecue on HIGH, and place red peppers on grids. Char on all sides, then remove from the heat. Place the peppers in a paper bag to cool, then slip off the charred skins; seed and chop. • Grill the lamb on HIGH for 2-3 minutes per side. Cool, then slice. • To make the dressing, place the yolks, garlic, and lime juice in a blender, or in the bowl of a food processor. With the motor running, add the oils in a thin stream. Add the chopped mint leaves. Season with salt and pepper if desired. • Toss the lamb, potatoes, peppers and blanched asparagus with the dressing, and garnish with fresh chives.

AUTOMOTIVE

Retro Cruiser

When Ford decided to redesign the Mustang, they opted to incorporate a retro look, much like what was done previously with the Thunderbird. Fortunately, Ford didn’t look at the ghastly Mustang II series from the 1970s for a template, instead the US automaker drew upon the second generation Mustangs of the late 1960s for their inspiration. Let’s just say that the redesigned Mustang has been nothing short of a sell out hit. Introduced as a 2005 model, the retro Mustang for 2006 offers only one change: the introduction of a Pony package which is meant to give the car a GT look and feel. Borrowing from the fastback design of the late 1960s, the 2005 model was such a hit that Ford could not keep up with production. Buyers have a choice between a 4.0L V6 and a 4.6L V8 engine to power the car. With 2+2 seating, 107 inch wheelbase, and a curb weight of just under 3500 pounds, the car cruises down the highway with 210 and 300 horses respectively. Each engine is mated with a 5 speed manual transmission and a 5 speed automatic transmission is optional for both. 4 wheel disc brakes and optional traction control [standard with the V8] help keep the Mustang under control.

Issue #11

Page 26

Cloth bucket seats are standard with leather seats optional. All models come with tilt steering wheel, cruise control, power locks and windows, power side mirrors, and air conditioning. First year sales of the Mustang were so good that the car sold out by early Spring. In fact, the Mustang dethroned the Chrysler 300 as the hottest car on the market with more than 15,000 Mustangs sold per month. All of this production is from just one factory. Production for 2006 is certain to be tight and with little incentives available – they certainly aren’t needed – the Mustang is likely to continue to have a long waiting list of customers desiring the sporty coupe. Considering that sales across the Ford division are flat, this is good news for an automaker desperately needing a hot seller. Became The Hummer Of Today

he popular hummer vehicle manufactured by General Motors actually uses the design of the HumVee military vehicle. This vehicle was created to replace the old military jeeps of the US Army because it was getting obsolete in the sense that it cannot be adapted to the new requirements of the US Army today. The need to traverse rough terrain easily simply cannot be done using the old style jeep. The new HumVee can easily do this using its wide suspension and stronger body. Of course, a bigger and better 4 wheel drive installed also helps a lot in making sure that the HumVee can indeed go anywhere on the face of the planet. Moreover, a deep water fording kit can also make the HumVee capable of fording a body of water up to 1.5 meters deep. Today, there are more than 15 versions of this vehicle in the US Army alone. The HumVee army vehicle has become the standard cargo carrier, troop carrier, ambulance, automatic weapons platform, missile carrier and surface to air missile platform of the US Army. It has become so popular that people are familiar with it without even having seen a real one. You can see HumVees in the news, in your pc games and in toy models. HumVee has indeed become the standard vehicle of the US Army. The HumVee also has its civilian counterpart called Hummer. This vehicle is manufactured by General Motors and has become one of the popular vehicles in the market today. The hummer is a vehicle derived from the HumVee design but on a smaller scale with components added for both comfort and style. Today, there are several models of this vehicle being sold as a midsized sport utility truck or a sport utility vehicle. They are generally used by people requiring a rugged and off the road vehicle for their line of work. Some people also prefer them because of the image or the size of the vehicle.

If you are a car fan you know that part of the fun of following the market is examining new models as they enter the showroom. There is just something special about a new car: the smell, the look, the price tag! For some 17 million American drivers a new car is in their future, while many others opt for the used car market. Some of the cars on the market today are hot, hot, hot! Let’s take a look at several new and future offerings from Dodge. Thanks in part to new ownership [Daimler Benz purchased the Chrysler Corporation in 1998] a fresh infusion of great looking Dodge models have hit a showroom near you. Additional models are soon to appear and the makeover that Dodge has been receiving is nothing less than astounding. Here are some of my favorites: Magnum - Who said that a station wagon should resemble a family hauler? The Magnum sure doesn’t. With an intimidating grille and a rakish exterior, the Magnum is a true man pleaser while also giving women a bit extra room in the back to haul stuff. Throw in a Hemi and the Magnum truly rocks! Charger – Okay, so the new Charger has four doors. Well, you can’t have everything. You can have macho looks, a powerful engine, and a car that is certain to compete with anything that Japan or Germany throws its way. Word has it that DaimlerChrysler is considering a coupe version. Now, wouldn’t that be cool! Caliber - Bye, bye Neon. The Neon served Dodge well, but it isn’t in the same caliber as the Caliber. Pun intended. To be introduced in Spring 2006 as a 2007 model, the Caliber will have three engine choices: 1.8, 2.0, and 2.4 I4s, a continuously available transaxle, and all wheel drive. In addition, 2.0L diesel engines will be available outside of the North American market – why not here? – as DaimlerChrysler sets to introduce the Dodge name into new markets. Other Dodge vehicles that are getting noticed include the Ram and Dakota pick up trucks, the Durango SUV and the soon to be introduced Dodge Nitro, the division’s version of the compact Jeep Liberty. Oh, yeah, who could forget the 510-hp V10 Viper? Can you say, Corvette beater? One word you can’t associate with Dodge anymore is the word, “boring.” Exciting cars, trucks, and SUVs for a market craving these types of hot vehicles. I guess the “ram” insignia really does befit the name. t is good practice to check you’re vehicle out before proceeding out on the road, and know all the safety features of the vehicle that you are operating. It is part of defensive driving to do these checks before you take you’re vehicle on the road. Vehicle inspection should be first on the list, before proceeding out on the road. Take out the tire wrench. You are going to need it to check the tires. Hit the tire to make sure there is sufficient air. You may want to carry a tire gauge in you’re car. Do a visable inspection of tires, looking for possible cracks or worn tires. Are there any visible leaks under the car? Do the signals work? Do the headlights work? (High and low beam.) Do the brake lights work? Check to make sure there’s enough engine oil; break fluid, and power steering fluid. Also check battery water level and coolant level. Do not open radiator cap! Vehicle must be cooled down first, if parked recently. (caution: see owners manual before opening cap.) Last will be transmission fluid. (Vehicle must be running to read proper level.) (Make sure you’re emergency park brake is applied.) Now you are ready to enter the car. Go over the safety features of your vehicle. . COMMUNICATION FEATURES:

most, if not every city and state not to wear it.

Signals help you warn other drivers, which way you intend to turn.

COMFORT:

Brakes warn other drivers your slowing down or stopping.

Heater should be adjusted accordingly, for maximum comfort. Driver must open windows if too hot.

Horn warns other drivers and pedestrians to be alert.

Seat adjustments should be adjusted for maximum visibility and comfort.

Emergency signals warn other drivers of a problem that you may have.

(Check owner’s manual for further knowledge of vehicle features and safety features.)

VISIBILITY FEATURES: Mirrors should be adjusted before you leave any parked position. Mirrors should be used quite often to see what is happening around you at all times. When you think your going to have to stop, check you’re rearview mirror first. You may have to touch your brake, to warn others behind you. You may have to stop a little further ahead to give the driver behind you room to stop safely. It’s all part of driving defensively. Headlights should be working, high and low beam.

These topics that we covered should be second nature when reaching for them, especially when you get an unexpected downpour, or hit with mud from a passing vehicle, if you have to look for you’re wipers, you may find yourself on top of another vehicle or in a ditch! Do not attempt to drive without this knowledge.

Wipers are a must in bad weather conditions. Windshield must be clean. SAFETY FEATURES: Emergency brakes should be applied when in a parked position at all times. Test you’re emergency brake by applying the handle, or pushing to the floor, depending on the make and model of the vehicle. Remove gear out of park position with foot on brake pedal and put in drive position. Ease up on brake pedal. Vehicle should not roll forward. It is a good habit to always release park brake after putting vehicle in gear. The vehicle will not roll forward if you forget to put you’re foot on the brake pedal, if the park brake is functioning properly. Seat belts: Make sure you’re seatbelt is on. Including passengers. argo trailers are essential purchases for many people. Buying a trailer can make it very easy for you to safely transport cargo. Enclosed trailers are what the majority of people choose for a variety of reasons.

Other people are turned off by the higher cost of enclosed trailers. They are attracted to open trailers because they think they will be saving money. However, many people end up buying enclosed trailers later on anyway because they’ve discovered that open trailers just doesn’t meet their needs.

There are many options available to you when you want to buy a cargo trailer. It can be very confusing to make a decision! One of the first options you have is whether to buy open or enclosed trailers. If you value your cargo and your investment, you should choose enclosed trailers for a variety of reasons.

You can end up spending a good deal more than if you had just purchased enclosed trailers to begin with! It would be a real shame to make the wrong choice when buying cargo trailers because they are a large investment.

Enclosed trailers offer many features over open trailers. One feature they offer is protection against bad weather. Imagine carrying precious cargo only to have it ruined in a rainstorm! Enclosed trailers can completely eliminate this problem, as your cargo will not be exposed to the elements.

If the cargo you transport is important to you, you’ll want to buy enclosed trailers. Enclosed trailers offer the durability and protection you need. Even though they are more expensive enclosed trailers are still an economical choice because of the quality they will provide to you.

Enclosed trailers have either double or single doors that open and shut. These allow you to have easy access to your cargo inside while protecting your investment. Some enclosed trailers even have a ramp. This makes it possible to put things like large vehicles inside enclosed trailers. Once the vehicle is up the ramp, they fold up and the doors shut. Another reason to choose enclosed trailers is because they can be locked. If you are staying overnight somewhere or will be away for an extended period of time it is essential to lock your cargo up. Nothing is worse than coming back to your truck to find your things have been stolen! An enclosed trailer can do a lot to prevent theft. Despite all of these wonderful things, some people prefer open trailers to enclosed trailers. One reason they give for this is that they consider enclosed trailers to be too heavy. This may be true if you only have a light load in your open trailer. However, an open trailer simply does not have the structure and that enclosed trailers have. It can be noted though that the extra weight adds durability to enclosed trailers. You can rest assured that your cargo is safe and secure in enclosed trailers. There is little risk of your items being too heavy for enclosed trailers, and you don’t need to worry about things falling out.

It is not uncommon for someone used to horse shows and fancy facilities to wonder why so many horse people still use old-fashioned stock trailers for their animals. With so many options available for slant load, rear facing, and other combinations of trailers, why would anyone want something as simple as an open-concept stock trailer?

PONIES

Depending on your purpose, stock trailers have many advantages over stalled trailers.

It is easy enough to ship ponies in any type of trailer, but stock trailers do have some advantages. You can fit quite a few ponies comfortably into a single stall of a stock trailer. With two-horse stock trailers on the market, a pony breeder could easily get away with a smaller trailer that could still ship several ponies. Larger stock trailers leave plenty of room to ship carts, harnesses and other equipment.

LARGE FARMS

SHOW HORSES

Sometimes a large farm needs to ship large numbers of horses at a time. Most stalled trailers have a limited number of spaces for horses, usually 2-4 animals. Stock trailers have the advantage that you can ship large numbers of horses in the space that stalled trailers waste with their rigid set-ups. If you leave the center divider open, a 20’ stock trailer can comfortably manage 5-6 full sized horses, loaded on a slant. The same sized slant load trailer would likely only manage 4 horses.

If you have a show horse and ship out to big shows on a regular basis, there are some wonderful advantages to a stock trailer. As long as you don’t have too many horses on board, it is easy to convert one section of your trailer into a box stall. This gives your horse a place to relax in when he is not expected to be out in the ring. You can even let him hang around without a halter on, if he is prone to breaking them. The stall also makes the perfect place for grooming and tacking up your horse. No more fears of having an escapee as you remove the halter in order to bridle you horse. He can be all dressed and ready to go before you even open the trailer door. This is particularly useful if you are showing a stallion.

BREEDERS Young horses should not be tied when they are shipped. Likewise, when shipping a broodmare with a foal, the mare is best left loose with the foal so that she is better able to avoid stepping on it. With a stock trailer, there is room for two large box stalls, in which one or more horses can be shipped loose. This is also the safest way to ship a horse who is injured or ill. FARMERS Stock trailers not only suit horses, but can also be used for many other kinds of animals. If a farmer has another type of animal that might need to be shipped, it is to his advantage to have a trailer that can be used for more than one species. If cleaned out, a stock trailer can also be used to ship equipment. LARGE HORSES

As you can see, stock trailers offer some unique advantages to the horse owner. While they may not be the fanciest trailers on the road, they are safe, they allow the horse the freedom to choose the best position for balance on the trip, and they offer a range of alternative uses. So the next time you see a big stock trailer pull into the show ground, consider that the owner might not just be some hillbilly cowpoke, but might in fact have one of the nicest rides in town. Some large horses tend to be claustrophobic when presented with a tight trailer. With large stalls, and loads of room, stock trailers are ideal for drafts. While you can’t squeeze as many in at once, you can often ship 4 big horses comfortably in a 20’ stock trailer, while most stalled trailers would need to be custom fitted to manage drafts.

HOW DO YOU READ BETWEEN THE TIRES? Every rider must have knowledge about tires. They must know its construction, its maintenance and care, how to mount and dismount it, how to troubleshoot and to take precautions. To do it here are the areas that need to be known by them:

Learn the language of riding. Drive wisely. Travel safely.

1. THE RIGHT SIZE. Sizing is the process of choosing the tire by determining its rim width. This means that the tires must not be wider or narrower than its original equipment tires because to choose otherwise will distort motorcycle handling. 2. PRESSURE. Pressure increases with temperature. Thus, a rider must check tires regularly especially during winter season. Advisable tire pressures can be found on the manufacturer’s reference table. Check them out in order to have a safe tire pressure. Never bleed air from a hot tire. Also avoid riding when tires are underinflated because this can lead to premature wear, tire failure and damage to the carcass. 3. THE WEAR. Regularly inspect the wear indicator in the tire grooves. You will know that the tire should be replaced if the wear indicators are leveled with the surface of the tread at any point. 4. THE VALVE. Always use valve caps to prevent air loss and to avoid dirt from entering the valve. 5. WARM-UP. Each time you ride on your motorcycle, always begin at a moderate speed. This will gradually condition the tires up to their normal operating temperature. If they have already achieved a full warm-up then they will have an optimal grip. 6. BREAK-IN. After warming up, avoid rapid acceleration or hard cornering. Do this for the first 50 kilometers of your ride up to the extent when the tread area is totally worn off. 7. REPAIRS. Try to learn the basics of motorcycle repairs so that you will not be groping in the dark when discrepancies occur. Another option is to consult tire experts to attend to tire repairs.

Imagine cruising down the nation’s highways with your four-legged friend by your side. Bringing your dog along is no strange thing. Your motor home is like a second home and has space for every member of the family. Almost half of all RV vacationers choose to take their pets with them. After all, the dog’s part of the family, and you don’t want to kennel him and leave him behind. RVing with the family dog is wonderful, but there are some things you should consider before you hit the road. BEFORE YOU LEAVE First off, get your pet used to car rides, if he isn’t already. Take him on some short drives around town, and then go for longer and longer drives. Make sure he’s comfortable in the moving car, and get him used to the routine of getting into and out of the car. You should always leash him before you open the door, so he won’t run out of the car. Also, get him used to the inside of the motor home. If it’s not convenient to take the RV out for a spin, just open it up so he can go inside and get acquainted with it. When you actually hit the road, bring along some of his favorite chew toys and items from the house, like old shirts or other toys he’s fond of. This will make him more comfortable and less likely to get nervous when you’re far from home. Of course, this also includes bringing along his favorite treats! Before you set off on your trip, get him checked out by the vet. Make sure he’s in good health and there is a low risk of anything happening. Bring along his medical records and the number of your vet in case there is an emergency. It’s also a good idea to scout out a vet anywhere you will be staying for an extended time. You can use the Internet to find vets in nearby towns in case there is an emergency. Another thing to consider is whether you will let your dog roam freely in the RV, or keep him in one specific area. There are advantages and disadvantages to both. He’ll get restless on the road, and letting him walk around in the motor home will help keep from having to make too many stops along the way. On the other hand, there is the safety to consider. If there is a crash or sudden stop, he will be in danger. You can always use a carrier or dog seat belt to keep him in his seat. You also have to think about keeping the RV clean. The more places you allow him to go, the more hair and potential messes you’ll have. If you are going to use a gate to confine him to a portion of the RV, it is best to make it an uncarpeted area. That will make clean up much easier. Even pets trained to go outside will have little accidents when spending long periods of time on the road.

Issue #11

ON THE ROAD With your furry friend aboard, you’ll have to make more pit stops. He’ll need to relieve himself, stretch his legs and drink plenty of water. It is recommended that you make a stop every 3 hours or so. Make sure that you leash him before the door opens, or you may find yourself chasing him all over the rest stop. You’ll have to make sure dogs are okay at the campsite. Most campsites have a limit to the number of animals, and it can be as low as one. If you have three or more, it might be tough to find a place to camp out. Be sure to follow the campsite’s rules. These can be pretty strict, and they are different from one campground to the next. It will usually involve bringing disposal bags, making sure he is leashed, and checking to see whether dogs are allowed in certain areas. Remember that these restrictions are mostly for your pet’s safety, to protect him from larger animals that might consider him a tasty snack. Bring several leashes. A great alternative to leashing your dog at a campsite is a portable outdoor exercise pen. This is a pen that you set up each place you go that allows your dog freedom of movement, without the risk of him wandering off to places he shouldn’t go. Once you’ve got everything covered, traveling the country with your four-legged friend can be a great experience. It’s a shame to leave him at home when you travel. Why not share the experience of the road with your canine companion? About the Author: Written by Andrew Stratton Taking an RV road trip can be fun for people and pets alike. Before you pack your furry friend into the motor home , though, you should prepare the animal and yourself for the lengthy trip. so you can look up to it for more details. Book yourself a room in a hotel or a resort if you not planning to spend the night in your RV. You can opt for online reservations. Many of the popular hotels have the facility of online booking. They are usually located in most popular vacation spots. Many people choose to stay at hotel rooms at night during their vacations. However there are some people who prefer to have outdoor camps for the night. There are plenty of resorts and hotels who offer you this facility at reservations. You have to make reservations even to camp at public campgrounds and state parks. The availability in public campgrounds depends upon the existing free space. So always make sure that you have a proper assurance to park your RV or put up a tent.

Every year the number of summer vacationers keeps on rising. Nowadays each and every one wishes to have a pleasant and calm vacation at least once a year. When it comes to booking for a summer vacation there are plenty of methods. Always have a list of destinations before planning for a summer vacation. It is almost impossible to make a reservation without planning where to go for summer vacations. While selecting a summer vacation destination you should plan according to your needs. You should also consider the facts like whether you are traveling with your kids, the age of your kids, the distance to your destination and the total estimated cost of your summer vacation and so on. Once you have selected the desired vacation spot, you can start making reservations for the same. It is better to make reservations, as most of the popular vacation spots fill up quickly, you would be left out without any proper accommodations. While booking a summer vacation, most of the vacationers take the help of travel agents. As travel agents are more experienced in every aspect of vacations, you can always take assistance from them to ensure your right vacation. With travel agents help you can save time and energy, instead of running errands for yourself to plan a summer vacation.

You can look up to online travel websites if you are looking for discounts on your vacation packages. Most of the popular websites provide you with numerous offers including discounts and extra days. They also provide offers on reservations like hotel rooms, restaurants and airlines throughout the world. But the only disadvantage is that most of the offers are available only on the summer vacation hotspots. It is highly difficult to find an offer on your travel package if you are going to an unheard travel resort. Follow the relevant steps while planning your vacation; it may be through self research or through a travel agent. The most common mistake people make is they believe that reservation is not needed while going to a popular summer vacation destination. This can mess up your vacation severely. To avoid that, ensure you have every basic commodity reserved for you in advance. Article Source: http://www.freearticles.co.za/recreation-and-leisure/travel/howchoose-right-summer-vacation.html

Planning your vacation all by yourself is also not that difficult. Most of the travel agents charge more than you expect, thus it is wise to plan your vacations if you are on a budget. With proper information on where and how to approach while planning for a vacation, you can make sure that your vacation goes well. You can make reservations with just a simple call. Other than road trip, airways are also one of the most popular means of transport in vacationing. If you desire to go for air travel, you should book the tickets well in advance to avoid unavailability. There are plenty of airline resources over the internet, so you can just hook up to the internet and find the right airlines suited for you in every aspect like price, availability, hospitality etc. Every airline has their own website

Start Planning Before You Buy obbies and passions can have no end, as long as you have money to finance them. Many do not realize that money plays a major role in determining how far you can go with your personal hobbies; what you call a satisfying pastime can be extremely expensive especially when stretched over long periods of time. Many people get satisfaction from living life on their own terms. There are many water lovers in the world and being in private or close proximity to water means that you must try to go sailing, swimming, fishing or boating. In order to enjoy many of these pastimes having a boat of your own is either necessary or highly recommended. Owning a boat can make it easier to pursue your water related dreams but boat ownership can sometimes be a pain. Buying a boat is very much possible for any family with nice standard of living. In the past only the extremely wealthy could afford boats but in the past years boat ownership has become a reasonable and realistic goal. The question that arises after buying a boat is where to keep the boat when not actually using it. Considering boat storage should occur long before the boat is owned. This is because the boat is very sensitive to the extreme climatic conditions and you naturally do not wish any harm to your boat for these reasons. Unfortunately, many people wait until after they have purchased a boat and the first big storm has blown in to decide where they should store it. Thanks to today’s world, we have options available for just anything. There are many boat storage facilities available where ever the boat usage is in common or considered to be in fashion. Companies are always on the look out to make much so any major chain that has discovered the boat stratagem niche will be sure to get a foothold in any community that commonly utilizes boats. These boat storage facilities often charge a great deal of money which will remove the smile that came with boat ownership from your face and replace it with a frown. This expense is incurred because boat storage requires a lot of space and along with special care and cover to protect the boat from rust and other climatic harmful affects. Boat storage should be first considered no where else but in your own house and this is because it saves you a lot in long run and your boat is always in front of your eyes under your surveillance making you feel good. The space used for boat storage in house is generally backyard and it should be large enough to accommodate and, if possible a construction of boat house is advised. This helps in keeping boat safely and all the worries regarding boat storage just woos away if a boat house is possible for construction. A boat cover is very essential while considering boat storage because it saves boat from unnecessary elements and keeps boat fresh as new. Boat storage becomes a very complex process if the boat storage facilities are not in proximity to the house and that is why it is very important to consult with yellow pages before you consider buying a boat. Boat storage is possible also in many

Issue #11

facilities available near the water bodies like dock, store houses, ware houses and even marinas. They charge an amount depending upon the size of the boat and other criteria they short list before checking in the boat. Boat storage sometimes becomes too complex because there are many store houses which can accommodate the boat at nominal cost but do not meet the specifications required like the way marinas and dock does. So it very necessary that you do proper research and long term planning before taking the decision of buying a boat. If you are having an extremely hard time locating boat storage then discuss storage with local boat owners. Most people are willing to discuss boating with a stranger that is obviously considering making the large investment. Find out if they belong to any boating clubs or communities which offer their members special privileges. Also, do not be afraid to think outside of the box. If you know anyone that owns a large warehouse that is not always in use ask them about renting the space for boat storage. Many people are happy to earn money on property that is doing nothing more than sitting around waiting for use. They will be happy to charge you a fee to let you store your boat during storms or the winter. Life Protection

Just as you cover your boat when it is not in use, the same should apply to your boat engine and its casing. In some ways, a good boat engine cover is more important, because the precise machinery of the motor could be easily damaged by just a little road debris, water, moisture or UV rays. BASIC PROTECTION Road debris caught in a boat engine can bring major repair bills. UV rays beat down on an engine casing, eventually causing dry rot and cracking. Water must be kept out of the engines intake valves. The right boat engine cover will solve these problems and extend the life of an engine. There are several types of outboard engine covers to choose from depending on where you keep your boat. In all cases, the size and length of your boat engine cover should match and fit snugly to the engine. Take measurements before buying. A complete boat engine cover envelopes the engine from the top of the casing to the bottom of the propeller. This is the best cover to use for trailering a boat, to keep pebbles, road trash or any foreign objects from getting into the engine or chipping any of the casing. This is also a nice cover for dry storage, to keep out the maximum amount of dust. A half boat engine cover protects just the top part of the engine. This is a practical choice for a boat that stays moored in the water and does not need protection for the propeller and shaft. It will keep the intake valves dry and block UV rays.

the engine and case are stored under shelter, UV- resistance is not important for this kind of boat engine cover. For high-latitude boaters, starting the engine on a cold day can be a challenge. However, for customers like the Canadian Navy and the US Coast Guard, heated boat engine covers ensure rapid starting. A few manufacturers offer these space-age accoutrements to the public. Plugs are available in different voltages and will keep an engine nice and warm, whether moored in the water or stored on land.

An engine carrying case is a soft, padded bag for transporting a small outboard motor. Some are as small as the engine and leave an opening for the propeller to stick out. Others are shaped to hold the propeller as well. If
