Curtains play a very important role in how you feel about a room. If you think curtains don’t matter, try this little experiment. Go to any room in your house and remove the curtains leaving a bare window. Or use a dark, heavy blanket and simply drape it over the curtain rod. Can you immediately see the difference? Not only does it look different at the window, it also impacts how the rest of the room looks and probably makes you feel differently about the room. So how do you decide what curtains to buy? Start by analyzing the room, what you intend to do there, your needs and existing (or planned) color schemes. With a little time and pre-planning, you’ll have the curtains that work in your room. Most curtains play a dual role. They not only decorate a room, but also provide a sense of security. Simply put, they keep people from seeing inside your home. For some rooms of your home, that’s probably not vitally important, but you have two options for those rooms in which visibility is an issue. You can choose heavy materials, finer weaves and darker colors, or you can use a double layer of curtain over blinds. Think blinds are just too ugly? Today, you have an incredible choice, including almost any color you can imagine. Having the ability to open curtains without a fuss is important in most cases. Most people who have a great kitchen window find this especially true in this room. Choose curtains that are functional as well as pretty. Drapes with a pull are an option, but it’s perfectly okay to choose curtains that simply slide on the rod, as long as the rod isn’t out of your reach. When you’re deciding whether to choose a dark or light color, remember that the decision will impact the entire room. Darker colors will tend to make the room darker and will cut out more light from the windows. If someone works an off shift and tends to sleep during the day, darker curtains are probably a good idea. But if you’re looking to lighten up a room, choose lighter colors for your curtains. The pale colors will tend to let sunlight filter through, even if the curtains are so heavy that you can’t see through them. Finally, remember that color is a vital part of this selection. Curtains are an excellent way to emphasis colors that were used throughout the room. Your walls may be burgundy and your carpet burgundy with pale gray highlights. If you choose curtains in pale gray, you’ll be lightening up the darker walls and the gray of the carpet will probably become more noticeable. Keep in mind that color tends to impact mood. While some people seem to be less affected than others, some general rules of thumb about colors are: * Green is very tranquil * Reds (including orange) are energetic * Yellow is considered a happy color. * Greens are typically calm and peaceful. * Black is usually very somber and people tend to avoid black spaces for long periods. * White is considered perfect, though austere. Issue #1

It’s not uncommon to get a bit tired of areas of our home where we spend a lot of time, especially if nothing has been updated for a number of years. The thought of re-working a room can be daunting at times, so it’s important to actually know where to start the process. First things first – gain inspiration from a fabric you love, or find an accessory (such as a rug, throw or cushion) that completely catches your eye. Whatever you choose will form the basis of your new color palette for the room and give you something to build from. Patterned fabrics are great for dressing up a room and giving it a fresh look. They can be used in a number of ways: • Cover furniture or parts of furniture, from a chair cushion to an entire sofa • Create panels for curtains • Cover a divider screen. A useful style tip for the ‘pattern-novice’ as the screen can always be re-covered or moved to a different room if you change your mind. Another benefit is that you can take it with you when you move house • Something as simple as stripes can bring together a range of colors and can be useful for giving you a palette to work with. Consider the scale of the pattern when deciding what you want to use it for. A large-scale pattern may be too much for a small living. Similarly, a small-scale pattern could

add a delicate look to a large room or make a smaller room appear more spacious. It’s a good idea to take samples of fabric and place them over different areas in your room to get an idea of how it will look. I love adding texture! Texture is important when building a room because it adds homely ‘layers’ and movement. It’s also an interesting way to keep the color palette flowing throughout, without making it too uniform. Textures you may want to consider for your home would include velvet; faux suede; leather; flocked cottons and silks; chenille or crewel (wool embroidery). These fabrics not only look good, but provide plenty of comfort as well.

The last thing you want to do is walk into a room and feel like there’s too much going on. A successful room needs to have balance. Too much of one color, pattern or texture will make a room look busy. Break up color with neutral tones to give your eyes a rest. Your main living space is a place to relax, not be overwhelmed – so be careful not to overload. The trick to great decorating is to blend well – each room must transition into another. And of course the rule “less is more” is something that should always be kept in the back of your mind. Too many fluffy cushions in one place can create a “poodle corner” effect. With balance being of equal importance, there are some tips you can use to incorporate this aspect in your room. The best place to start is to create a floor plan so you can clearly see where your windows, lighting and furniture are positioned. Once this is determined, you can then decide which fabrics to put where. Keep large objects (such as the sofa) in a fairly plain fabric, particularly if the room is small. You can always add accent cushions or throws with color and pattern to liven up the piece – and change them out when you want a fresh new look for the season. Before purchasing drapery, consider how many windows the room has and where they are positioned. A wall of windows with heavily patterned curtains may risk looking too busy when the drapery is drawn. Don’t forget to use magazines for inspiration – tear out pictures of furniture items, rooms, colors and patterns and create your own scrapbook of ideas that you can use as a point of reference. Experiment and have fun through the entire process! E-mail your decorating questions and photos to [email protected] or visit website www.kohon.ca.

Temperature, humidity, lighting conditions and movement play important roles for wines to mature properly. Wines need to be kept in a safe place if they are to be stored for any amount of time. And there is no other way of storing wines safely other than investing in a wine rack. While choosing a wine rack it is to be remembered that the rack should store the wine the right way. Another important decision to make is the size of the rack whether you want to store a few bottles or hundreds. There are lots of varieties and designs to choose from. Horizontal wine racks are the best among all the choices available. Vertical wine racks are not a good option for storing wine. In vertical racks the cork will dry out and eventually shrink, causing air to come in contact with the wine and your wine will be ruined. Vertical racks are useful for short term storage for wines that are intended to be consumed young. Tilted racks will either leave the cork dry or deposit sediments near the cork. Horizontal racks are the best, as the cork remains moist and

swelled preventing your wine from unwanted air contact. Sediment falls on the side of the bottle, far away from the cork to prevent spoilage when pouring. It is also cost effective, the design is simple and more racks can be added with ease. Wine racks can be of metal or wood, placed on the floor or hang from ceilings. If metal is your choice then you can opt for Wine

Tower, Lily Wall, Echelon, Wine Lounge or choose from Calistoga Wine Hanger or Climbing Tendril. Wooden wine racks have the advantage of adding extra storage space as and when you add to your wine collection. Wooden racks are usually constructed of maple, cedar and mahogany that have strength, hardness and visual appeal. Choose from Rectangular Bin, Diamond Bin, Waterfall Individual Rack or the Curved Corner Rack. For the more creative ones you can order your own wooden kit. The kit includes bolts, wrench and wooden racks machined with pre-drilled holes that can be installed in no time at all.

Wine racks come in various sizes. From small wine racks that can hold one or two bottles to those that can hold thousands. Small or medium sized racks work fine for your home collection while for commercial purposes large sized racks are required. Depending on your choice, wine racks can cost anything between $20 and $1000. About the Author: Written by Rory Hawkins Rory H. Hawkins writes about wnie racks and other interesting topics. Most homes have more than one bathroom so you may want to make one room a special bathroom with a bathtub that fits your needs.

can add a sauna or hot tub in the tub. In addition, you can give your pet a bath in a tub. How should I choose a bathtub? When selecting a bathtub for personal use you want to make sure you consider comfort first. Therefore, the dimension, shape, and deepness are something you want to consider. Maybe you will want to get a bathtub made for two people so you and your spouse can take a romantic bath together, perhaps light some candles, turn on some soft music, etc. Don’t forget to add the bubbles, since it adds a nice touch. You both will enjoy the romantic evening together. Then again, perhaps you just want to melt away the stress alone.

There are many kinds of bathtubs. Therefore, you may want to get a proposal done so you know that the bathtub will work to fit your needs. This way it won’t be a waste of time and money. You’ll know if it will fit, and whether you will have to redo the tub. In some instances, bathrooms are the smallest rooms in the house so you may want to make the bathtub work for that room. If not maybe, you will want to add onto the room to make it larger so that the bathtub will work for your needs.

What are the applied sciences? A person with a smaller frame may not feel comfortable in larger tubs. Perhaps, the person would enjoy a tub that is low rather than unfathomable ones. On the other hand, a larger person may enjoy profundity while soaking in a tub. It really depends on what you are searching to complete.

How do I know what size of a bathtub to get? Bathtubs come in all sizes; small to very large it depends on your needs. You want to consider if you want to use your bathtub for a guestroom, master bath, etc. Bathtubs come in a variety of colors so you can’t decide on what shades to fit your needs, until you explore the texture, tone, and trend of your room.

How do I choose the right size? The archetypal bathtubs are somewhere around fourteen inches widthwise and somewhere around seventeen inches unfathomable. European baths are available with a depth around eighteen inches. Still, you can find deeper bottoms.

Should I choose a bathtub or shower and what accessories should I consider? There are many different reasons that a person would choose a bathtub. I like a tub, since you can relax. Other people would take a shower over a bathtub. However, here are some reasons why you may like a bathtub.

How do I choose design? Bathtubs are designed and crafted with many types of materials. The china styles for example, make up the stall acrylic and fiberglass. Gel veneers balance the composites of marble and the cast-iron.

You can use a bathtub to soak your body after long hard day at work. It will help you relax your whole body. Put in some bubbles, maybe play some soft music, and just enjoy it. Maybe you would like to read a book and light a few candles.

What’s New in Home Computer Furniture?

The rapid growth of people working at home has created a new segment in the office furniture market. The big difference in home office furniture can be summed up in one word: size. The office furniture that you find in most corporate offices is too large for most apartments and homes.

Beyond the style of your home furniture, the feature that is most important is functionality. Your computer chair and desk are the main components of your office; the computer desk and chair have to work together as a unit. With the number of hours spent in front of a computer monitor growing, furniture makers are beginning to design their computer furniture to match ergonomic guidelines for reducing stress on the body that leads to carpal tunnel syndrome, neck, shoulder and back pain.

Furniture manufacturers took note of the number of customers asking for smaller desks and all inclusive workstations to hold their computer equipment; keyboard, disk drive and computer monitor. Requests for ergonomically designed computer chairs and desks have steadily increased over the past 10 years. Today you can find a computer desk that can hold everything you need for your home to fit in less than five square feet of space.

Computer chairs that are adjustable in height and lumbar support have enjoyed great popularity since they were introduced. Now you can find computer desks that have adjustable shelf heights for your computer monitor and keyboard as well.

Computer Furniture Styles Furniture designers and manufacturers from around the world have begun to create office computer furniture that is both attractive and functional. If your idea of home office furniture is a rectangular desk and chair, get ready to be pleasantly surprised: the computer furniture for the home of today is available in every shape you can imagine from round to oval to freeform.

As lifestyles have changed, there was also a need for furniture to blend into the overall theme of the residence. Now you will find manufacturers who are paying special attention to the “home” aspect of home office furniture. Several furniture designers are creating master bedroom furniture sets with a computer desk and chair styled to match. In addition, with the growing number of teen bedrooms including personal computers, many manufacturers of teen bedroom furniture sets are including a computer chair and desk along with the bunk beds, throw pillows and storage bins.

When it comes to presenting a room, every area in your house should have an interest point. Another term used in this instance is “focal point”. Both terms basically refer to an element within a room that draws your eye to a particular place. Often, these interest points are naturally created through the architecture of a room, but sometimes, it is up to the homeowner to create these focal points.

atmospheres throughout their house. They complete a room and without one, the area seems rather drab. It’s like walking into a box with no life to it or interesting surroundings.

For those who are not sure how to identify the interest points throughout your home, you may be surprised what is considered a satisfying focal point. If you should happen to have a fireplace in any of your rooms, such as a den or family room, this is your focal point. When you enter your bedroom and are greeted by a large painting of the family, this may be your focal point if no other large competing points are present. Sitting in the den, the warmth of the sun is felt through a large picture window that provides great views of the open sea; this is definitely the interest point of the room. When your architecture does not automatically provide you with a clear focal point, you can create one by adding one or more elements to a room. Creating a focal point within a room can be achieved by hanging something substantial on the wall. Some ideas to consider include flanking one side of the room with a hanging rug of some value. Fur accents are also interestingly eye catching. Pick a remake of a well known painting, such as Starry Night and place it on the wall. Sometimes, creating a row of shelves with an unusual design can achieve the same affect. Try installing shelves with a circular display. Often, entertainment equipment makes for a nice focal point, especially if it is one of those fancy flat-screen varieties that fit on the wall like a live motion painting. Focal points allow homeowners to create specific Issue #1

Page 14

Once you have situated an interest point for your room, now it is time to enhance its qualities. This means arranging furniture to fit the composition of the focal point. Sometimes, you can actually influence your guests to pay attention or take notice to your focal point by the way you arrange the rest of the room. Try to place furniture in a way that creates a nice scene for communication. Items should have several meters between them to avoid a smothering atmosphere. If they are placed more than 3 meters from one another, conversation may feel strained and distant. Seats should be turned to face your focal point. To enhance convenience, tables should be placed within a reasonable distance from your seating options. Usually, when it comes to furniture placement, the most common approaches are to create “U” or “L” shaped arrangements surrounding the focal point. Once this is accomplished, all you have to do is sit back and enjoy the atmosphere you have created. About the Author: Written by Gregg Hall Gregg Hall is an author living in Navarre Florida. There is no doubt that when winter comes around, it can really do damage to our skin. The low humidity can dry out the skin, and eczema often becomes a problem. However, there are things which you can do to beat those winter skin blues. How to Treat Winter Skin! There are various things you can do in order to keep your skin happy and healthy all throughout winter. These include: Purchasing a Humidifier Who does not have their heating on and their windows closed in winter? The last thing we want is to be sat shivering in our own homes! However, the trapped heat can be really damaging to our skin and it can often cause our skin to dry out and if you have Eczema it can make it even worse and the itching may become unbearable. A humidifier keeps the moisture in the air and can stop your skin from drying out. You do not even have to pay a fortune for a good humidifier, they are usually inexpensive and they can be purchased from any local drug store. However, you should buy more than one to keep the whole house humidified, but you will be thankful for it overall! Switch to an Oil Based Moisturizer If you do not already, you should now start to use an oil based moisturizer. Generally, the more oil the moisturizer contains, the more effective it will be in defeating dry skin. The best moisturizers to go for are the ones that actually come in oil form. These usually are made up of 80% oil and 20% water and they are absolutely ideal for winter skin! The water and oil combination helps to create a protective layer which generally makes it more moisturizing than creams and lotions. Take Precautions Before You Go Outside Before venturing out into the winter weather, it is always better to protect yourself and your skin first. Believe it or not, you still have to protect the face from the sun in winter and so a moisturizing

sunscreen with a sun protection factor of at least 15 should be applied. Wearing gloves is also an essential tip as the hands often get dry and damaged from the severe cold. Sometimes the gloves can be made of a material which will irritate the skin so make sure the gloves that you choose are really comfy. Many people wear a cotton mitten underneath a woolen mitten just to be extra warm, and this does really help to keep the hands protected. Make Sure That You Dress in Layers However cold it is outside, it is important that we dress in layers so that we do not overheat and sweat excessively. With layers you can easily take something off if you become too warm. Sweating causes itchiness so it is definitely worth avoiding! Loose fitting cotton clothing is always better as it allows the skin to breathe, whilst at the same time keeping it warm. Condition The Hair More Frequently The hair also becomes dry in winter and so it too needs added moisture. A good conditioner should sort this problem out and a conditioner which you can simply spray into your hair and leave it in may be worth thinking about as it will lock in the moisture for longer. Use a Moisturizing Shampoo As well as a conditioner, a good moisturizing shampoo is also needed to make sure that the scalp is cleaned properly. Itchiness of the scalp can be a real problem and a good moisturizing shampoo can really help. Overall, to best look after your body in winter you need to make sure you are getting more moisture into the body than normal. Prevention is always the best cure so be fully prepared and you should sail through winter with no major problems! Beauty and functionality should not be considered as two concepts that cannot go hand in hand. It is the general misconception that items that are beautiful or elegant looking usually fall short in the area of performance and functionality. Please keep in mind that this is just a case of generalization. Indeed, both beauty and functionality can go together in solid fusion, a higher level is achieved. There are a lot of examples that can be presented regarding this but we will be focusing on a specific item: cedar chests. We will look at how both beauty and storage functionality can be combined to form something that can be considered as a work of art that is practical yet possesses aesthetic values.

4. Outdoors Or Indoors - Cedar chests can be utilized in both outdoor and indoor settings - Storage chests for indoor use are designed with both elegance and functionality in mind - Perfect for increasing storage space in any room - Can be used as a bench, hope chest, blanket box, or coffee table - Designed to be water tight - Durable hinges - Last for a long time despite exposure to different kinds of weather - Garden tools, poolside toys, muddy shoes, etc. can be stored

Cedar’s natural characteristics 1. Wood Care Wood is considered to be a very attractive material used for the construction of storage systems, but it also has its drawbacks. Some types of wood are prone to rotting while there are some like cedar wood which have natural resins that make it rot resistant. To make cedar last longer, it should be maintained by applying a preservative every other year or so to preserve its natural beauty and protect it from the harmful effects from exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays. Cedar’s natural oils also prevents insects from going into your clothes. But in time, the pores in the wood become clogged which prevents the oils from getting out. To resolve this, get cedar oil extracts from the nearest furniture shop or sand the wood’s grain. 2. For The Office Or Bedroom Cedar chest designs allow it to be very versatile which makes it a very useful and interesting piece. It can be placed in the office to serve as data storage or file organizer. At the same time it can be used as a side table just by simply placing a few decorative items on its top. Its interior space can be configured to serve a variety of purposes that you may require. It is equally at home in the bedroom wherein it can be used for storing clothes, mementos, and other significant items. It also adds a rustic flavor to your bedroom setting. 3. Wheeled Trunks Another option for your storage requirements would be cedar chests that have wheels. This will prove to be very useful especially for people that are always moving from one place or another and individuals that like to arrange their house’s interior. These are great for storing blankets, sweaters, and toys among others as well as a furniture piece. There are also cedar chests that come in cube designs which are great for maximizing space especially for small areas. It is also used as an end table.

Issue #1

Page 20

5. Things To Consider: The price and quality of the chest are important factors to consider when buying. The cost of a product is directly related to the level of quality. Higher priced products have better quality while cheaper ones are not as good. You should be able to balance this two factors. The design of the chest is also critical. Match the chest’s design with your house’s theme. For rustic designed houses, choose a chest that has a rather raw and rough design and if your house has a more formal design choose a chest that carries the same theme. Why get another kind of storage system when you can obtain something that not only stores your goods but also cares for it? As mentioned earlier, cedar has natural properties that protects valuable items and clothing from insect damage. Wood is versatile and can be customized depending on your needs. It can also serve as a furniture as well as storage at the same time. If you had your misgivings about buying wooden storage, then now is the time to get rid of it. Designer neckties are made all around the world in every continent and almost in every country is home to at least one tie factory, even in Antarctica, where those penguins are the kings of style in their little suits. There is no single answer as to whether a tie made in a certain country or even by a certain brand will guarantee perfection. In fact, designer ties vary as widely as poorer ties. Ultimately, the secret of finding where top ties are made is to know what to look for in a tie. However, it is interesting to know just where ties come from.

The first thing to understand about where ties are born is that unlike what your mother or father may have said about the birds and bees, we are looking at worms and moths instead. By explaining a little bit about how silk is made, we want to show you that it does not matter so much where ties are made as how ties are made. When it comes to that, the number one rule is that polyester ties are for work horses. We will dive into that before explaining silk. Polyester ties are made in China, the United States, India, Australia, Latvia, Cameroon, and who knows how many other countries. Polyester ties some times carry exciting patterns or colors with them, but the purpose of polyester is survival. If you wear a tie a lot and not just wear it, but wear through it polyester neckties are the way to go. A polyester tie lasts just as long as an expensive silk necktie at usually a fraction of the price. With that said, there really is no superior make of polyester tie. When it comes to silk ties, however, we can start to discriminate between levels of quality. Where does the tie fabric come from? Even with ties made in

the United States or England, the silk is often imported from another location. Korea and China tend to suffice for most silk ties. When it comes to a truly classy silk necktie, the silk comes from Thailand. Genuine Thai silk is usually ten times more expensive than artificial silk, which may come from Italy or any other number of more fashion conscious nations as an attempt to carry more weight in the name. Genuine Thai silk is usually not shipped out from the country raw, but to buy a Thai silk tie would be to buy one entirely produced in Thailand. Where is the tie made? As mentioned, Thai silk ties are made in Thailand. When it comes to distinguishing between the quality of other ties, take into account where the tie was made. Ties made from Korean or Chinese silk in Korea or China are generally inferior, because of cheaper materials and labor. When the silk is imported, the higher quality workmanship increases the durability and price of the tie. Often, American made ties will note that they are made from Italian silk as an attempt to merit a greater value. While it is true that this does increase the ties merit, Italian silk is not the be all end all of ties. Is the tie hand made? Hand made ties are a necessity for a classy tie collection, and are usually made from imported materials, the fabric may be woven at another location, but the stitching and creation of the tie is what earns it the title of hand made tie. Most hand made ties will be made in the nation for the department store in question, and are found in the United States, England, France, and other European nations, as well as from Asia. Usually, hand made ties from Asia take a great deal more craftsmanship than an Atlantic made tie. Two Way Service

There is nothing more frightening while driving far from home than your car breaking down and you having no one to come help you. What’s worse is if it is winter time and it is freezing cold outside. That puts you in a situation in which you have to use 411 on your wireless phone to try to find a towing service or someone who can give you a hand. That can take a long time to do, which means you’re going to sit there and become colder and colder. This is also very dangerous because you

You’re going to be able to save money. Other features that you may find as a part of your roadside assistance membership include locksmith service, tire assistance, battery jumping, and gas. The locksmith service is something else that can be quite expensive. You’re looking at anywhere between $30 and $40 just to have someone unlock your car. Again, this makes your roadside assistance more than worth it. Have a blown tire? Call your roadside assistance company and someone will come out to you and put your spare on for you. The gas and battery service means that someone will come to you and jump your battery or bring you enough gas to get to a gas station. You do not have to be stranded and scared. Most of all, you don’t have to be stranded, scared, and cold.

never know what may occur while you and/or your family are stranded in an unknown place. That is why it is important to have roadside assistance. It is something that is extremely necessary to have, especially in the winter time. This isn’t saying that getting stranded is not dangerous any other time of the year, but more deaths occur as a result of freezing to death. This make the winter the time of year that is the most deadly for motorists who find themselves broken down on the road. Features of roadside assistance There are several features of roadside assistance that one may find is offered to them. First of all, there is towing service. You might be thinking, “Well, this is something that I can get anyway. I can call 411 and get the number of towing services that may help me.” First of all, 411 on your mobile phone costs you money every single time you use it. Then you have to take into consideration the cost of the towing service. This can be very expensive. However, what you pay each month for your roadside assistance or even what you pay for a year will more than pay for your towing service.

Issue #1

Always stay safe By getting roadside assistance, you are allowing yourself to travel in confidence. You should only have to worry about where you’re going. You shouldn’t have to worry about being on the road and becoming stranded in subzero temperatures. Most of all, you should not be allowed to be in danger. By having roadside assistance, you are taking measures to keep yourself safe while on the road. So when shopping for roadside assistance, make sure you choose a service that gives you everything that you need. See what your options are because you don’t want to have to settle with something that has a lot of features you don’t need.

INCLUDES:

Today, people are looking for quality auto parts that are capable of enhancing their fuel efficiency or vehicle performance. Custom wheels are wheel rims and tires that can be utilized to style different kinds of vehicles. There are many various types of custom wheels for everyday cars, as well as motorcycles and trucks. Custom rims could be a stylish addition to a vehicle’s appearance, irrespective of whether the rims are spinning, have an alloy, chrome or painted appearance. While replica rims are those that have been modeled based on original factory rims, classic car rims are used by car enthusiasts to give older, antique cars their original look. Semi truck rims are usually made of aluminum or steel and made extra strong to be able to withstand the weight of truck loads and the wear and tear of long hauls. Steel wheels are heated to over 2000 degrees to mold the carbon billets that are hit by forging hammers. They are able to sustain the stress of long hauls better than other types of truck rims. Today, the types of rims available are light alloy and pressed steel custom wheels which dispel heat from driving, and increase economical gas mileage. Custom wheels are available in a wide variety of styles and shapes, from chrome, alloy, aluminum, spinning, titanium to wire wheels. You can also get wheel finishes for aftermarket racing rims which range from chrome, polished, aluminum, powder coated, brushed and even gold plated. When looking for custom wheels, you need to know the size of your wheels which can range from 12 to 28 inches. Chrome wheels are a great addition to any type of vehicle. They will actually have people’s heads turning, and that will surely add to making your ride even better. When it comes to buying auto parts, one should not compromise on quality because safety and keeping your car running smoothly is top priority. The engine is the most important part of the car, and with that come the auto parts. However, it is also necessary to do your research, and shop around at different stores or even consider online shopping to see what is available at the best possible price. There is a variety of brands available of any auto part that you would need. You just need to know what you are looking for, and go find it.

Issue #1

Remember the good old days when if you needed something done you could hire someone to do it? You didn’t have to worry about anything like where to find a part or how to repair anything. You used to be able to pull up to a gas station, where someone would actually come out and pump the gas for you, check your oil and clean your windshield. All you had to do was pay for the gas and be on your way. Now we have entered the “do it yourself era”. You pump your own gas and check out your own groceries. There’s a book on how “dummies” can learn to do anything by just reading a few pages and applying the lessons learned. One of the few things left that you can still opt to have a professional do is maintenance on your car. You can go through one of the many drive thrus that offer oil changes and engine maintenance. With the way things are going, it might be better to start to learn how to do these tasks yourself, not just to save money, but who knows how long you will be able to rely on someone else to change things like your oil filter. Women in particular are now starting to learn how to do things that were usually left to men, such as changing the tires or oil, and checking the different fluid levels in the engine. I remember when my wife had to call me at work because the car didn’t start. She felt really bad when I showed up and all that had to be done was to jiggle the gear shift into park. Her face was so red! I remember that she made me a nice dinner to try and make up for it and we talked about how she could learn more about cars so this type of thing would not happen any more. We started a little weekend training program. I really don’t know that much about cars, but I was able to teach her all the basics.

We sort of worked through it all together. I was learning a lot at the same time as she was. We changed the oil in the car and played around with the spark plugs. We also practiced changing a tire so she would know how to do that in case she was ever stuck. After we had practiced some of the basic maintenance things with the car I actually caught my wife reading a book on how to keep your Chevy maintained. It was really cool to see her working so hard to be independent. Now my wife doesn’t mind taking the car to the shop because she feels comfortable that she will know what they are talking about when they discuss the cars problems. In the seventies it seems that most shows were to an extent, known for the cars that the stars drove in them as well as the stars themselves. Some of the shows you will find listed here, the cars in the shows were even known to receive their own fan mail. The weekly hero of the action packed T.V. show was almost assuredly driving a fast and expensive sports car. Most people tend to think they used the same car in every episode but usually there was a whole team of identical cars that followed the stars through the series. See how many of the following cars you can remember from the seventies: 1. Gran Torino on Starsky and Hutch. This was everyone’s favorite Muscle Car it seemed, at least the most recognizable. The paint job (red with that big, white stripe) and the style prompted Ford to add it to their line. Gran Torino enthusiasts still get together to show off their rides to this day!

2. Do you remember Dan Tanna and his 1957 Thunderbird from Vegas? In this program Robert Urich played a cop in Las Vegas named Dan Tanna who just loved cruising around the strip in his T-Bird. It was a bright and shiny red and was actually two identical cars used that they switched back and forth when taping the show. The character started out with a corvette but ended up with his signature T-Bird instead

appearance. Some folks in Ohio ended up with the car after the show was cancelled but they revived it for the Columbo movie in the 80’s. 2002 FORD F-350 SUPER DUTY 1 TON LARIAT -$19,900

4. The golden Firebird Espirit of Detective Rockford is another classic. James Garner played Detective Rockford and always seemed to be having financial troubles but he could always afford to drive around in his signature Firebird.

5. 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado from Mannix. Another one of those great detective shows. Joe Mannix was played by actor Mike Connors and it was a very customized vehicle indeed and one that most people remember. Mannix had secret compartments all over the Toronado and it was a little more high tech then many cars of its era. In later episodes Mannix had an array of cars at his disposal but the 1966 Toronado seem to make the most impact.

If you asked anyone about the 70’s famous cars undoubtedly they would mention one or more of these cars. Of course there were a lot of others but these five seem to be the most likely to come up in a conversation about the era. After all they certainly did seem to steal the show right out from under the human stars.

Diesel engines are vastly untapped when it comes to horsepower. Prime example— the 2006 Dodge Cummins Turbo Diesel. This truck ships from the factory with a respectable 325 horsepower. But now, thanks to the Edge Juice Performance Module with Attitude In-Cab you can jump to over 425 at the push of a button. Along with ungodly gobs of power, you’ll also enjoy a full compliment of gauges including Boost PSI, Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT), Barometric Pressure, Speed (MPH), Engine Coolant Temp, Intake Temp, Load %, Slip %, Transmission Temp, Throttle %, RPM and Backdown % due to excessive EGT or Boost. You can view any combination of four variables at once on the Attitude Monitor. Another feature I like is the built-in turbo timer. This option will increase the life of your turbo by running the engine after you turn off the truck until a specific EGT (set by you) is reached. Installing the Edge Juice and Attitude Module Overall, installation is fairly easy. There are quite a few connections associated with the gauges, but the kit comes with detailed instructions and pictures coinciding with the various stages of install. One of the most difficult tasks is installing the EGT probe. For this, you’ll need to drill and tap your exhaust manifold to accept the threaded end of the probe.

level 5 for 100 HP and Level 6 for 160 HP. To get level 6 you have to contact Edge directly and get what they call a “hot unlock code” which you enter right into the Attitude module. According to Edge “There is a cost associated with accessing level 6 and a release liability waiver must be signed.” This last part makes me think level 6 could do bad things in the wrong hands…namely mine, which is why I haven’t “unlocked” this feature just yet. Safety Features for Your Diesel Engine One of the biggest reasons I purchased the Edge Module was the safety/engine protection features it offers. Along with the diesel turbo-timer that prolongs turbo life by allowing it to cool down properly, the Edge Juice has an audible alarm system that alerts you when dangerous conditions are present. You can preset alerts for EGT, Boost Pressure, Engine Temp, Trans Tem and speed. Drive Test In a word: Wow. The performance gains are incredible all the way through the power band. Low end, middle, top end…all show marked improvement over stock. On the freeway you’ll find yourself doing 80 with plenty of pedal left. The only drawback I’ve seen is an increase in smoke…not really a big deal, but it does piss other drivers off sometimes. At the higher power settings, fuel economy did not increase or decrease. At power level 5 you can expect the same mileage as stock. At lower levels (1 & 2) I went from 14.9 MPG to 16.5 mixed highway and city driving. Overall

All the other wiring is pretty straightforward with connections necessary at the injectors, MAP sensor, OBDII data link, ignition (for turbo timer), power and ground. The kit comes with a mounting bracket for the Attitude in-cab module, but I thought it looked a little cheesy, so I opted for an A-Pillar Gauge Pod. You can pick these up for around $75 and they give a nice finished look to the install. Power Levels Although Edge claims 5 different power levels, there are actually 7. Level 0 for stock settings, Level 1 for 25 HP, Level 2 for 40 HP, Level 3 for 60 HP, Level 4 for 80 HP,

I give this product a serious thumbs up. I picked up the Edge Juice with Attitude Module for $899 and the A-pillar gauge pod for $75. So for less than a grand I have all the horsepower I could want, a whole set of digital gauges and an automatic turbo timer to boot. Your tires – where the rubber meets the road. And when it comes to saving money on gas, there’s a lot of opportunity to get better milesge from your tires. Here are some tips for getting better mileage with your tires.

at the expense of gas mileage. If you put snow tires on for the winter, make sure you get them off in spring.

1 – Proper Inflation It’s been estimated that up to 50% of people are driving around on underinflated tires. While tires that don’t have proper air pressure in them are unsafe, you will also lose 2% of your gas mileage for every 5 pounds per square inch (psi) of pressure that you are below the manufacturers recommended pressure. The reason is that if your tire isn’t inflated properly, there’s going to be more tire touching the road, causing more friction, which reduces gas mileage.

And when you’re buying tires, try to fine a tire that has a low rolling resistance.

How can you tell if your tires are underinflated? Well, if they look flat they probably are, but it’s not always possible to tell if your tires are properly inflated just by looking at them. In fact, it’s actually quite difficult. What you need is a tool called a tire pressure gauge that you can get from any auto parts store and even your local Walmart or Sears – they’re not expensive. Also, some gas station hoses will have one of these tools built onto them so you can check your pressure when you fill up. When you’re filling up one tire, make sure you check the rest to make sure that all your tires are properly and evenly inflated. 2 – Type of Tire Some tires have specialized purposes – like snow tires. Snow tires are really good at driving through snow, but they do so

Page 35

Also, using steel belted tires can help you improve your gas mileage by up to 10%.

Wide tires and studded tires will both significantly lower your gas mileage. 3 – Alignment & Balance Make sure that your wheels are properly balanced and aligned. While this isn’t really something you can do at home without specialized equipment, your local auto repair shop can easily do this for you. Keeping everything aligned and balanced means that your tires will roll as freely as possible, helping you consume less gas. While there are a lot of things you can do to save money on gas, make sure you don’t neglect looking at improving your tires since they’re the only part of your vehicle that actually touches the road. It’s been more than 100 years since an American engineer registered the first hybrid vehicle in 1905. With the abundant supply of fuel being what it was back then, it’s no surprise that hybrid development took a back seat to internal combustion engines. Times have changed. Environmental concerns, such as global warming and the effects of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and unburned hydrocarbons produced by internal combustion engines, have brought greater scrutiny on how we power our vehicles. And as anyone that’s pulled into a gas station knows, the cost of gasoline has pushed hybrid technology into the automotive consumer mainstream as an alternative. However, most consumers aren’t entirely sure what a hybrid is and aren’t aware of the various hybrid technology options. In the simplest of terms, a hybrid vehicle uses two or more sources of power to propel the vehicle. The most common hybrid combines the traditional internal combustion engine with an electric motor. Ideally, this set-up runs mostly with a battery-powered electric motor; but when the car needs more power (as when going uphill or during quick accelerations), the internal combustion engine is engaged. Thus, hybrids deliver fuel efficiency over performanceand there’s plenty of room for improvement. Internal combustion engines have an efficiency of about 35%, which means that from all the burned fuel, only 35% actually propels the car. In comparison, electric motors have an efficiency of almost 90%, meaning that 90% of the electricity stored in the batteries propels the car. Therefore, the major increase in efficiency of the hybrid systems is due to the inclusion of electric motors. Types of hybrid vehicles When it comes to hybrid technology, there are lots of different nomenclatures making the rounds. Some of the hybrid jargon that is common in the market today includes terms like: full, mild, parallel, series and plug-in. Here’s a brief description of these terms that are being associated with hybrid vehicles. Full Hybrids are propelled at low speeds without using any gasoline at all, much like an EV (electric vehicle). An internal combustion engine is turned on and runs until it reaches normal operating temperature. After that point, the internal combustion engine is used only when supplementary power is required. At low speeds, the vehicle runs on emission-free electrical power. The internal combustion engine engages to accelerate quickly, to cruise at high speeds or when the batteries are running out. The priority of a specific

Issue #1

engine is decided by the vehicle’s on-board computer, not the driver. Generally, when the car is cruising at low speeds, it only uses the electric motors. In Mild Hybrid vehicles, the internal combustion engine is running the entire time the car is in motion. It only turns off when the vehicle stops, saving gas. There are several different types of these kinds of start/stop systems, but they all accomplish essentially the same result. In general, start/stop systems use the electric motor to smoothly power on the internal combustion engine. One start/stop system that is growing in popularity is the BAS (Belt Alternator Starter), which replaces the usual belt driven alternator with an electric motor/generator. When the internal combustion engine is running, the electric motor acts as a generator and recharges a separate battery. When the internal combustion engine needs to be started, the electric motor powers it up via the belt without the need for a regular starter motor. Hybrids are also distinguished by the way they combine gasoline and electricity usage, either Parallel or Series.

Parallel Hybrids feed gas to the internal combustion engine at the same time they power the electric motor using the batteries. Both motors propel the car by means of a continuous variation transmission, which smoothly adjusts gear ratios for optimum performance and allows torque to be delivered to the wheels from both engines. All Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) currently in production are considered parallel. Series Hybrids use the internal combustion engine to drive a generator producing electric power. This electricity can either directly power the electric motor (that transfers torque to the car’s transmission) or charge the batteries. Therefore, the internal combustion engine is only used to produce electricity; it never directly propels the car. The next realm of hybrid vehicles will almost certainly include a plug-in battery recharge feature. This will allow “clean trips” (powered on electricity only) to be extended further. The cars could be recharged by plug-in means during nighttime and used for short city trips in the same day without any gas consumption. If the batteries discharge before reaching home, the vehicle will still run using the internal combustion engine. About the Author: Written by Mike Trudel Mike Trudel, Freelance Writer. Let’s say you’re driving down the highway and you see a farm using metal barns. You see that there are tractors and other farm equipment parked around them, so you assume that the barns are used for parking their heavy farming equipment. That is when you begin to wonder if it is possible to place livestock in those barns. You know they are metal and metal tends to draw in heat, so how is such a thing not going to keep the livestock from burning up? Believe it or not, there are ways in which the heat can be deflected away from the barn so that livestock can live inside. The truth of the matter is that farmers have been utilizing metal agricultural barns as ways to house their livestock for years. The days of wood barns are more or less over because of the durability that metal agricultural barns offer. They also offer a degree of safety that wooden barns do not.

usually a pasture surrounding the barns so that the livestock can go outside. Sometimes you may notice that one whole side of the barn is open and it opens up into the pasture. This keeps the air circulating through the barn and allows the livestock to move in and out as they please. This is common with cattle and other large livestock. For smaller livestock such as chickens, metal agricultural barns may be more closed in and they may have a smaller entrance and exit into a pen area. This is usually when it is good to utilize a cool roofing system such as tiles to deflect the sun or asphalt shingles. However, having a small doorway area allows the chickens to move in and out as they please and some farmers may use a fan system to pull out the heat and pull in air so that the eggs that have been laid do not get too hot. Metal agricultural barns are also being used as horse stables. Again, one side of the barn may be open so the horse can go outside as it pleases and graze in the fields. There are just so many options when it comes to metal agricultural barns and how they can be used for both farm equipment and livestock. Actually, they can be used for virtually any purpose that you deem appropriate. It is your investment, so you can use your barn in ways that you see fit. Other advantages There are other advantages to metal agricultural barns. One is the fact that they are durable, so that means you’re not going to have to rebuild your barn prematurely. They are also very easy to maintain, so you’re not going to be spending all of your time maintaining your barn.

Metal barns can stand up to the elements better and they don’t offer unexpected surprises such as weak boards. In terms of security, you can secure a metal barn and not worry too much about thieves breaking in and stealing your equipment. This means that investing in metal agricultural barns can actually save you money in other ways. What about the heat? There have been methods adopted to help keep the inside of metal agricultural barns cooled. There is also the fact that there is Issue #1

The days of constant maintenance are gone, so that means you can focus on the tasks that are important rather than having to throw your energy into the buildings that house your equipment and livestock. That alone makes the investment well worth it. You’ll notice that right from the beginning. When it comes to successful ice fishing for perch, there are some tried and true tips and techniques that are usually spot on in getting the fish to biting! Whenever you plan to ice fish for perch, you want to consider going to a smaller line whenever you can. The smaller lines are not as easy for the perch to see, and are generally more effective as a result. Another advantage to using lighter line is that they really seem to get the bait to the true depth you want to fish, they allow whatever jig you are using to behave in a more natural fashion and just seem to work better as a result.

length of line and attaching a small treble hook and see if it works for you. When it comes to ice fishing, electronics becomes even more important than it is in any other type of fishing. A really good unit is a Vexilar unit. It has a tri color system and is really excellent for bottom and hook separation. A depth finder tells the angler where the fish are and how heavily concentrated the fish are in any given area. This can be invaluable when ice prevents you from relying on other cues. You can set the sensitivity of this unit so that you can easily differentiate between fish, forage, and your hook.

The type of rod you use to ice fish for perch is important as well. You do have some options, though. If you buy a somewhat stiff ice rod, you can easily put a spring type bobber on the tip, or you can choose an ultra light rod from 18 inches to 36 inches in length. Just try to find a good rod that has a light tip and a little rigidity about halfway down the rod. This will allow you to set your hook well, while still letting he fish bite with little tension. If you plan to fish outside instead of in an ice house with heat, you should consider using a rod with large guides. Some of the smaller ones tend to freeze up easily.

A good GPS system is also a great tool when you are ice fishing for perch. When you are out on the middle of a barren slab of ice, everything tends to look the same. A GPS system will allow the angler to find hot spots and structure that looks inviting before they drill. Most brands of GPS are basically the same with one notable exception--try to choose a brand that allows you to upload maps using a CD and computer. These maps really can enhance your ice fishing experience and a good GPS will allow you to capitalize on that.

Now, on to choosing a jig for catching perch through the ice. Most ice anglers rely heavily on anywhere from 1/8 ounce to 1/32 ounce jigs to catch perch. These jigs are normally tipped bait and use a slip bobber. Many ice fishermen will also use a spoon or other ice jig. Good choices are Rattle Snakies, Kastmasters, Ripple tails, Casadas, or Ivan Slammers. Now, whenever you are fishing for perch, there are some modifications most ice anglers like to make.
