You have always wanted to have a kitchen island in your kitchen. Yet, you just haven’t done it because you know that it would take a lot of time, effort, and money to actually put it in. When it comes to color, many homeowners have a terrible time deciding whether or not a color they absolutely love with will look good in their home. You may also wonder if certain colors in a cushion or throw will fit into the whole scheme of things. To determine whether colors will work for you, there are a few tips to keep in mind.

When deciding on what colors you love, start by taking a look at your wardrobe. Think about what colors you wear most of the time? Are there any colors that stand out as your absolute favorites? Chances are, these are the colors that you’ll be the happiest with. Even if you pick a neutral color for most of your home, you can still inject those great reds, oranges or other “wardrobe” colors you love without overpowering the space. The great thing about painting only a few walls (or rooms) with strong colors is that they can easily be re-painted when they become a bit tiresome (as we all know our tastes change over the years). Once you have an idea what colors you like, visit some local paint stores and look for colors in that range. Pick several paint chips that appeal to you and take them home before buying any paint. The color on the paint chip will change when you take it home because of the different lighting conditions. You’ll also want to check the color in different rooms and at different times of the day (morning vs. evening light). Once you’ve narrowed your selection down, you may want to put together a “sample” board to give you a realistic idea of how your room will look when completed. Foam core is probably the best type of board to use for the project. If you paint the foam core board your main wall color, it will give you a

good sense of how the room will feel (with respect to color) when you hold it up to the wall. Samples of your sofa fabric, wood tones (furniture) can be added to the board so that you have an idea how all your items will look together. Don’t rush the process - live with the sample board for a few weeks before making your final decision. Check the board at various times of day to ensure that you still like the color as it changes throughout the day.

It’s important to take your time when making the final decision on the color selections for your home. Mistakes can prove to be costly if you need to re-paint your entire home because of some bad color choices. Living with a sample color board for a while will prepare you for an outcome you’ll be sure to be happy with. One secret a lot of neat people keep form the disorganized, messy bunch of us is that the first rule of organization and cleanness is order, and that in any given space there should be a minimum of objects around to keep the job of cleaning and putting order as simple as possible. That’s nice ha? Sounds right, and feels right, but its not that easy to maintain, not when just going over your clothes in the morning is enough to ruin any closet or room organization.

Do you find yourself not wanting to look at yourself in your bathroom mirror in the morning? It may simply be because you have poor lighting. Lighting naturally creates shadows and if you don’t have your lighting properly planned, you may find that your newly remodeled bathroom isn’t the happy place you thought it would be. I’m writing this article as a result of numerous questions from my neighbor who is remodeling. Being a lighting professional, they have lots of questions for me regarding their bathroom lighting. It really seems to be a daunting task for them. In Bathroom lighting design, there are many decisions to make. From design and placement to what fixture to use to what light bulbs are best. I’d like to take you around the room to give you a rule of thumb when planning your own bathroom lighting design. Shower Lights Showers are a space that you no doubt need a form of recessed lighting. It’s very important to use a recessed fixture that is made for the shower and rated to work under conditions of humidity and possible contact with water. In addition you’ll want to use a light bulbs rated to use in the shower. Most products will be clearly marked as such.

Ceiling Fixtures

Personally, we have a dimmer on our shower light. It allows for a slow wake up by anyone getting into the shower before the light of day. But it’s important to provide enough light to allow you to shave and see what you are doing. Bathtub Lighting Depending on the height of your bathtub and if it is separate from your shower, your lighting solutions here will be different. Let’s assume you have a separate bathtub here. If not, you won’t do anything different than what I’ve outlined above. Typically, you will be using recessed lighting above your bathtub area. It is not necessary to have water rated fixtures and light bulbs in this spot. One or maybe two recessed fixtures aimed at the outside of the tub will provide what you need. Aiming to the outside of the tub will provide light to see what you are doing yet will cut down on any glare. Mirror and Vanity Lighting This area might be the most crucial spot to get it “right.” Improper lighting when you are trying to apply make-up or shaving can be the pits. Lighting companies have come up with a number of functional and decorative choices for vanity/mirror lighting.

If you are lucky enough to high ceilings in your bathroom, go for a small decorative fixture like a small chandelier. The rule of thumb on the size of chandelier is calculated by taking the width of the room added to the length of the room. (Or if you are installing multiple lighting fixtures, use the dimensions of the area that this fixture is meant to light.) That number should equal the diameter of the fixture. Ie. A master bath that is 15’ X 13’ would need a chandelier or decorative fixture about 28” in diameter. Recessed Lighting I’m all for recessed fixtures in your overall bathroom lighting design. What I don’t care for are ceilings that look like swiss cheese. After you’ve planned for all other lighting, it would be prudent to fill other lighting needs with recessed lighting. If using recessed in the toilet area, locate the can in front of the toilet and not right over. No reason to be in the spot light! Use recessed to light dead areas or to light sitting/reading areas. Yes, some bathrooms are big enough for reading or lounging areas. Above a bench or reading area is a perfect place to insert a recessed fixture. Now, I’m going to throw this in now. My neighbor wants to put a sconce above the toilet for reading purposes. Use the same rule of thumb as mirror sconces and place the fixture at about eye level. Night Light

Topping and flanking your mirror with vanity strips is one way to provide light. Insure that you purchase vanity light bulbs that have a lower wattage or frosted glass so you don’t blind yourself. The mistake I’ve seen many make is that their light bulbs are too powerful and then they unscrew several of them to take the light level down. This totally defeats the purpose of having a vanity strip as it is suppose to distribute light evenly. What we decided to use is our home is wall sconces. And now that I think about it, we used it in all three bathrooms. The master has 3 as we have a long vanity and there are holes cut in the glass where the sconces sit. The other two bathrooms have the sconces flanking the mirror. When you choose

to have more than two, it’s important that the spacing be such that the light is coming from either side of each sink. Spacing here is not as critical; just insure that they are evenly spaced. Most folks tent to stand in front of the sink and you wouldn’t want to have the sconce right in front of your face! Their height should be about eye height. This will need to be adjusted slightly according to the type of sconce that you choose. Bottom line is that you don’t want to be able to see the light bulb itself when standing and looking at the sconce.

Some sort of lighting that can be left on all night is not only a safety solution but will allow you to make the middle of the night trip to the bathroom without totally waking yourself up. Lots of folks use a night light and if you don’t have much space in your bathroom, this is a great solution. I love to use accent lamp lighting when there is room. A small lamp with a long life light bulb or compact fluorescent light bulb in it provides a wonderful accent light day and night. Either place on your vanity or on a small accent table. There are numerous components to bathroom lighting design. The above should get you started in the process or at least give you the confidence that your electrician is putting junction boxes in the correct spots. One last suggestion I’ll make is to put all of your bathroom lighting on dimmers. Many of us use our bathrooms as a serene get away. To achieve this; lighting is a huge component. Many coffee drinkers drink coffee not just for the great taste, but also for that extra caffeinated kick. For some, coffee is a great way to start the day. In fact, many people drink coffee throughout the day to enjoy a great tasting beverage that also keeps you up and awake. Besides the traditional cup of coffee, there are numerous coffee drinks that are very tasty and delicious. Americano, Cappuccino, Latte, Mocha, Espresso. All of these coffee drinks mentioned are great! There also exist coffee dessert drinks, the ultimate tasty upper that combines the great taste of coffee with caffeine and sugar and your favorite topping in the form of a blended shake-type drink.

At the heart of defensive driving is a driver’s ability to anticipate situations, including the mistakes of other drivers, especially during less-than-ideal driving conditions. You may be an excellent driver and a master of road rules, but there’s nothing like a basic knowledge of defensive driving to minimize risks on the road.

One of the best defensive driving techniques is to signal every time you turn or change lanes. That way, you never catch other drivers by surprise. Make signaling a habit. Even if the road appears to be deserted and there seem to be no other vehicles around, signaling your intent is always an excellent defensive driving practice.

Here are six of the most important defensive driving techniques:

Automotive

1. Let other drivers know of your intentions early Sudden stops, turns and lane changes often lead to accidents because they catch other drivers by surprise. Hence, one of the basic rules of defensive driving is to clearly communicate to other drivers exactly what you are about to do. For this reason, it is crucial that your brake lights, head lights, signal indicators and other driving lights are working. If they are not, have them checked right away. Otherwise, defensive driving is not an option.

5. Warn others as you stop or slow down When making a full stop or slowing down for whatever reason, it’s a good defensive driving technique to let other drivers know of your intention. You can do this by tapping the brake pedal a couple of times so that your brake lights flash and clue in others behind you that you are slowing down or stopping. This is especially important if the driver behind you is driving fast and approaching quickly. 6. Try to anticipate the worst in others

2. Being predictable helps Having all your indicators in good working order is great, but they won’t help much if you can’t be predictable. Defensive driving is synonymous with being predictable - you do what you’re expected to do. If you’re signaling a left turn, then make a left turn. Don’t signal that you’re going left then suddenly turn right. And, by no means, don’t keep signaling a left or right turn then just going straight ahead for miles and miles. In defensive driving, one never makes a move that confuses other drivers on the road. Surprises are great, but never when you’re driving.

It may sound cynical and ‘s not a good rule to follow in life but, in defensive driving, it pays to anticipate the mistakes of other drivers on the road. For instance, many drivers routinely signal a turn but don’t turn at all. Meanwhile, others don’t signal at all and then suddenly turn. Many people disregard stop signals or try to run red traffic lights so keep a watchful eye out for these instances.

3. Know where you want to go The first rule of defensive driving is: know where you want to go. There’s nothing quite as dangerous as making a sudden turn or stop, which is something that drivers do when they are not sure about where they are headed. Ditto for driving slowly then suddenly zooming fast. If you’re confused about where you you want to go, you’re probably confusing other people on the road as well. If you’re lost, park your car and regain your bearings. Check a map or street directory or maybe even ask someone for directions. The worst thing you can do is drive around aimlessly. That’s like looking for trouble with a capital T. 4. Make signaling a habit

Diesel engine principles are pretty straight forward for the experienced mechanic but what about regular everyday people who have never taken the time to find out more about a diesel engine and how it works? I am going to explain in layman terms the basic principles of a diesel engine. What is the difference between a gasoline engine and a diesel engine? The first thing you should know is a gasoline engine and a diesel engine are totally different. A gasoline engine is constructed much lighter than the heavier built diesel engine. The gasoline engine runs on a air and fuel mixture combined with a high energy spark that is timed to ignite inside each engine cylinder at the precise time creating power and torque turning force which drives your vehicle. A diesel engine uses high compression intake air that is compressed into a very small space inside each cylinder causing extreme heat. This is called heat of compression which ignites a very fine high pressure mist of diesel fuel that is injected into each cylinder at the exact time.

engine a boost of air to keep up with instantaneous injection of fuel. Compression stroke. When the piston starts to move upward the valves close which traps the intake air in the cylinder and allows compression to take place. The heat of compression is reached when the piston reaches the top of the cylinder, the diesel fuel is then injected into the cylinder at the precise time. Power stroke. After injection takes place an explosion occurs in the cylinder because of the combination of heat and atomized diesel fuel. This causes the piston to be forced downward which produces torque and the horsepower required from a typical diesel engine. Exhaust stroke. After the power stroke the piston moves upward once again while the exhaust valves open allowing the previously ignited gases to escape to the atmosphere out the exhaust system. As mentioned before each cylinder goes through this exact sequence over and over in a set firing order. For instance, a 6 cylinder diesel engine has a firing order 1 5 3 6 2 4 This is the order that each cylinder goes by, following the 4 strokes mentioned above. This sequence has been engineered to allow the diesel engine to run smoothly with no imbalance.

Here is some diesel engine trivia on high performance diesel engines. Fuel passes through the injector at speeds of nearly 1500 miles per hour, as fast as a jet plane at top speed. Fuel is injected into the combustion chamber in less than 1.5 milliseconds, the same time it takes for a camera flash to go off. The minimum amount of fuel injected into a diesel engine is one cubic millimeter, about the same volume as the head of a pin. Volkswagen has developed a one liter diesel powered car that got 100 kilometers out of .89 liter of fuel, 60 miles on less than one quart of fuel. 6.7L Cummins diesel engine

So you now know that a gasoline engine needs a high energy spark to run while a diesel uses heat of compression. The four stroke principle in all engines run on four strokes or four cycles, both these terms mean the same. Here is how the four stroke diesel engine operates. The four strokes are intake, compression, power and exhaust. The pistons, valves and injectors work together in each cylinder in a set sequence over and over. Intake stroke. Intake valves in the cylinder head open allowing pressurized air to enter each cylinder while the piston is traveling downward. The pressurized air supply is made possible by the turbocharger which pushes air into the intake system giving the diesel

checked at least once every six months. Your engine may be having a hard time starting and this is exactly the type of problem caused by poor contacts. If you have a direct injection engine, clogged injectors could cause the same problem. Cleaning products are readily available that you can put into the fuel tank that can add some life to your injectors. You should though know that if this does not work, your injectors may be past the point of saving and will need to be changed. Suspension System Check Tires that have uneven wear patterns are often the result of suspension problems or may just be incorrect inflation pressures. If the RV leans heavily in turns or the front end drops low when braking, there is a real possibility that you have suspension problems. The old test for shock absorbers was to manually bounce each corner of the RV, if possible and watch to see if there are more than just a few bounces. Excessive bouncing will probably mean that the shocks need changing. If you have a large RV, then it would be best to get the above symptoms checked out at a local garage that offers RV maintenance. Preventative maintenance will help your RV run for much longer and give you extra years of service. Look after your RV and it will look after you. It would be safe to say it’s a bit like a marriage. You’ve purchased an RV and the one thing that will help you have many years worth of enjoyment from it is without doubt a regular maintenance schedule. You may have negotiated a maintenance plan into your purchase price, if that’s the case great. If you have bought a second hand RV, you may be able to do a lot of the preventative maintenance yourself. Like any expensive item you cherish, you’ll no doubt make sure that it’s well protected and well looked after. Preventative RV maintenance is all about keeping a check on those parts that are either known to cause problems or will probably cause problems if left poorly maintained. A few of the more common things to keep a close check on when maintaining an RV are very similar to that of a car. These maintenance items will ensure that the basics are covered. Fuel System Check Regularly check that the fuel filter is clean and free from debris that may have come from the fuel tank. Clogged filters will make it harder for the RV’s engine to operate efficiently as the correct mixture of fuel to air may not be maintained within the combustion chamber. This can cause what’s known as “kangaroo” jumping or juddering and is not a pretty sight. Air Filter System Check the air filters and replace them regularly at least 3 to 4 times a year depending on how dirty or dusty the local environment is. Air filters keep the air that’s introduced into the engine combustion chamber clean. When these filters become blocked or compromised they will affect the efficiency and hence MPG of your RV. Check them regularly and replace when required or at the interval you have decided upon. Braking System Check Be sure to check the brake pads and brake fluid before attempting any long journey. Brake pads will get worn down fast in more difficult or challenging terrain. Check the brake fluid lines regularly for damage or leaks. For the 32nd year, snowmobile enthusiasts from across the Prairie Provinces will gather in Yorkton on February 21, 2009 to participate in the Easter Seals Snowarama. Snowarama is a fund raising event that combines winter fun and community spirit in support of a great cause – Easter Seals Saskatchewan. This family-oriented event offers riders two groomed trails, complimentary lunch and fuel at midway point, an awards banquet, and a chance to win a brand new Ski-doo. Participants are welcome to register now. All riders must be Barry Bradshaw, Melanie Hitchens at least 12 years of age and all snowmobiles must be licensed. A minimum $150 donation is required to ride. Since the event began in 1977, over $1,400,000 has been raised to support Easter Seals kids in Saskatchewan. The longevity success of Snowarama is due to the consistent and significant support from snowmobilers and volunteers. Snowarama attracts approximately 325 riders each year and a large team of dedicated volunteers. Easter Seals Saskatchewan provides the following programs for children with disabilities in Saskatchewan. Camp Easter Seal is a completely wheelchair accessible camp located at Manitou Lake near Watrous. Lake Lakannoki Warm Up Shack It is a place where barriers are removed to create a true camping experience for kids with disabilities. Through corporate and public donations, children’s camps are fully subsidized. The cost per child for a one-week session at camp is approximately $1,300. Summer Fun is a specialized day camp providing leisure and recreational activities. It is offered in Yorkton as well as other branches of the Saskatchewan Abilities Council. Adaptive Technology Services offers assistive technology, adaptive computers, and other specialized electronic tools to help children with disabilities participate more independently within their environment. A device to communicate with family and friends, electronic controls, and computer software packages are examples of the Issue #6

specialized equipment available through this program. Benefitting from the funds raised at Snowarama is Yorkton Easter Seals Ambassador, Melanie Hitchens. Melanie is a delightful fourteenEaster Seals Ambassador year-old who exemplifies that special Easter Seals spirit- the focus on ability, not disability. Melanie was born with bilateral hearing loss and has used hearing aids since the age of four-and-a-half. She has attended Camp Easter Seal for four years now and enjoys swimming in the pool, horseback riding, and slumber parties. The 2009 Snowarama committee anticipates 350 riders and proceeds of $125,000 for Easter Seals Saskatchewan this year.
