Refining your vision on Refining your vision assumes that you have received a vision, therefore, the process of refining requires you to go back to source to ensure that what you are doing is consistent to what was given originally. An example is a diplomat, who, upon a change in government, reports back to his country of origin for any new policy directives. So a time of reflection is critical, but as a business owner, how can you involve employees in this process, so that they too can take possession of the vision and work towards its attainment. We will discuss in subsequent articles. I read this statement while surfing the internet “The recession is causing people to talk, (not do) Entrepreneurship”. I found the statement quite interesting, given that we in Trinidad and Tobago like to talk or as some would say ‘we make talk’, but, to what end? Talk is good, because it allows for a distillation of ideas in different forms, from a variety of sources. But talk should then motivate us to act, after we have discussed the ideas. Why then in times like these people talk and don’t act? Maybe it is because deep down people are afraid and uncertain. Given the economic environment there are good reasons why people can be afraid, however, in times like these knowledge and wisdom are the principal things. Yes, I know at this point a difference needs to be made between wisdom as dispensed by the gurus from Wall Street and wisdom that is developmental. Which perspective you take is dependent upon your goals and objectives, however, having objectives that are not developmental often times benefits a few individuals, whereas objectives that are developmental tend to be inclusive. How does this translates into business or your life in the current economic slowdown.

Ensure that the vision is clear to you and staff and in some cases this may require you to develop innovative ways of sharing the company’s goals and objectives. One on one discussion, casual conversations at lunch or whenever the opportunity presents itself. This saturation is necessary because people absorb one tenth of what is said to them at any one time and the tendency for things to slip increases as the day to day pressures bear upon a worker. So, keep talking. When is action required Often times required action is not the earth moving, heaven shaking kind of activity, but, the simple steps of addressing the little issues that employees bring to your attention daily. Fixing these can yield tremendous benefits as employees work harder when they perceive that effort is exerted to fix their small issues. Example, introducing flexi time for staff. In concluding, talking is important in communicating business goals and objectives, but that communication should not be one way, particularly when employees voice their concerns to employers, employers should be prepared not only to listen but to take appropriate action.

The first P is picking the right topic. If you are assigned a topic, then you must pick what evidence and explanations you will include. The most important criterion in picking a topic is that it be one that you get excited about. If you are enthusiastic about it, your audience will model your attitude. If supporting evidence is all equal, then choose the support that you are most enthusiastic about.

Excitement makes you have more animation in the delivery of your presentation and thus a more effective presentation overall. The second P is perusing material that might work in your presentation. Ideally, if you know far enough in advance about your upcoming presentation, you want to start this part several weeks before the speech is delivered. Look

through magazines, trade journals, newspapers, and the internet for relevant materials. Ask associates for content ideas. This is not the time to be writing ideas down so much as it is finding available, recent, relevant, and appropriate material for your presentation. This stage of your preparation may help you to determine what direction to go with the structure and limitation of your topic.
