Kylie Minogue heads to
Bollywood!
T
he Kylie-effect had the potential to launch a full-throttle interest of joint ventures between Hollywood and Bollywood. The Australian singer reportedly impressed Indian directors with her Bollywood moves after only three days of rehearsals for the film Blue. The pop singer said she was thrilled to work with India’s double Oscarwinning composer AR Rahman, after recording one of his songs for the movie. She met Rahman at the Baftas in London last month where she presented him with an award for Slumdog Millionaire. The movie is about a sunken treasure ship and is said to have been inspired by the Hollywood production The Deep. Although little is known about the plot, Kylie will reportedly appear in the film playing herself, acting one scene with action hero Akshay Kumar and performing a set piece song-and-dance routine. Speaking to reporters, Kylie said she had been overwhelmed by the response she received in India. “My over riding memory of India is the warmth and professionalism of the people I dealt with whilst making Blue. I arrived here as a stranger but I left considering myself as family.” “I don’t feel that I’m necessarily at the forefront of a HollywoodBollywood crossover because I don’t consider myself Hollywood. But I do think this could be the start of something. The fact that I’m here shows it could be the start of something.” Kumar, who last year starred in a music video with

Snoop Dogg said he felt Slumdog Millionaire had “opened many doors for not only India, but for our own film industry”. He added: “Only weeks ago Kylie was on stage honouring our Rahman at the Bafta Awards, now she’s performing a song composed by the very same man. “And I’ve heard Kylie moves as sweet as she sings, so its back to the rehearsal room for me!” Kylie is just one of the first Western stars to appear in a Bollywood film. Later this year Sylvester Stallone will become the first major American star to appear in a Bollywood film, titled Incredible Love. The move is also rumoured to feature Arnold Schwarzenegger. It will also be the first time an Indian production is shot at Hollywood’s Universal Studios. While in Mumbai for the completion party of her Bollywood film Blue, the stars talks about the coming together of two Titanic film industries. Akshay Kumar, Kylie Minogue and Zayed Khan added glamour and glitter to the occasion. Zayed Khan said about the world renowned pop-diva, “I still can’t get Kylie Minogue out of my head. It is difficult to hide that I am a huge fan of her. She is a very good human. She is an essential and important part of the film.” The singer had her own eloquent words. She said, “Bollywood has always attracted me, so when I was offered the chance, I grabbed it. It is good to see that Hollywood and
Bollywood are working together now. I am here and working, this surely says all about what the Industry is feeling at the moment.” Kylie was not Rahman’s first choice. D’ Souza, the director of the film said there were many contenders for the spot, with reports that singer Madonna too had been asked. The pop diva apparently declined on account of her bitter

divorce. Another contender, R&B star Rihanna, asked for too much money. Production house Ashtavinayak Cinevision finally settled for Kylie. With a budget of $28 million, this may well be Bollywood’s most expensive film. The film boasts a star cast — Akshay Kumar, Sanjay Dutt, Zayed Khan, Lara Dutta and Katrina Kaif. Inspired by Hollywood underwater thrillers like The Deep and Jaws, D’ Souza says the movie is an action thriller.

Lady Luck -Preity Zinta
Preity Zinta made her acting debut in Dil Se in 1998 followed by a role in Soldier the same year. These performances earned her a Filmfare Best Female Debut Award. She was later recognised for her role as a teenage single mother in Kya Kehna. Page 12

reity Zinta shook the entire crowd with her on-screen question rendition of ‘Are you a virgin’ to none other than the Baadshah of Bollywood... Shahrukh Khan, no less! What followed after Dil Se, were films that were no less than hits, super hits and smash hits! She returns with Deepa Mehta’s Videsh. Planning to get in to film production? There’s too much on my plate right now. I need time for my family, my films and myself. Lately, I’ve been two timing films with my first love, Cricket. But there should be some announcements soon. Lost interest in Cricket? I haven’t sold Kings XI, though I could have made big money. I am in it for the long haul. It’s an 85 million-dollar investment. I knew we couldn’t break-even in three months. But this season I am hoping to make some money. Where did your team go wrong the last time? We played our first match in Mohali…our team members were still coming in. No hard feelings, I am very happy with my team members. I am looking forward to seeing them again. Have you been discussing IPL strategies with your team captain Yuvraj Sing in New Zealand? I haven’t come here as an IPL owner but to support Team India and to enjoy myself. This is my time. I enjoy this beautiful and adventurous country. I have been sky diving, bungee jumping and watching Cricket. You’re a lucky mascot for the team. Since you turned up, they are on a high again. I wish I could say that it’s not because of the coach, the captain or the boys but because of me that our team’s luck has changed. But that would be presumptuous! The boys are playing so well…what catches, bowling and batting! We need a little bit of luck. There’s talk of a December wedding with Ness Wadia. I am the master of my destiny. No one else decides whom I’m dating, breaking up with or getting married to. Idle minds have been doing that for me for a while now and I’m angry. I’ve been honest earlier…now I’ll keep everything to myself. Does Deepa Mehta portray you as a victim of domestic abuse in
film Videsh? Heaven on Earth is not just about domestic abuse, but about immigrants as well. I have always wondered how on one hand we worship our women as Goddess and on the other use them as punching bags. My co-star actually slapped me in front of the camera. It was a mistake he took one extra step and went phatak. And… The film fell in to perspective. Till then I had been intellectualising. But when it actually happened to me, I knew exactly how a woman could feel helpless and humiliated. Of course, as soon as Deepa shouted, “Cut” I turned to Vansh and growled, “If you ever do it again, I’ll kill you”. It took me twenty minutes to get myself under control and three days for the bruise to fade.

and win. Of course I wish all slums would disappear and everyone had equal opportunities. Your 34th birthday party celebrations were cut short when the cops came knocking following a complaint about loud music. Some guy got amazing publicity talking to the TV cameras. It’s bizarre that the rest of my neighbours didn’t hear the music. Now I’ve started keeping a strong vigil in my area against noise pollution. What’s a rule for me is a rule for everyone. I adopted 34 girls from the Mother Miracle School in Hrishikesh. They celebrated my birthday in school and sent me photographs’. It was awesome. The best gift you ever got? On January 24, when the IPL bid result came in my favour. I was so excited that I couldn’t stop jumping around. It took me a day to calm down. We’re talking about Valentine’s Day gifts here. Hmm, can’t recollect one right now. Ideally, how would you like to spend the day? I don’t plan too much, but go with the flow. I’m a romantic at heart and all that, but I don’t plan days ahead…I’m more spontaneous. What has been the most romantic moment of your life? It has to be the scene in Kal Ho
”
Naa Ho, when Shah Rukh reads the letter to me. I remember asking Karan Johar if anyone could do that in real life. I don’t think so. I was floored. The dialogue was so much like poetry. Ever wished it could happen in real life? In reality, life is incredible. If anyone wrote poetry to me, I don’t know…I’d probably run. So does success sit lightly on your shoulders? Vidhu Vinod Chopra once told me something very relevant. He said that a good day would come to an end just like a bad day will. It’s very important to understand that. Preity Zinta is an image to the audience. That image has been created by hundreds of technicians, which include my make-up artiste, hairdresser, scriptwriter, director, my co-stars who compliment me on the screen. That’s showbiz. It’s important that I understand that. I’m not that image. Once you’re clear about that, you’ll automatically learn to take it easy. It’s easier said than done. How do you maintain your sanity? By taking a month off every year. Sundays are also a compulsory off. I just stay away as much as possible from the film crowd. I have a set of friends far removed from the industry. Plus, I live each day as it comes.
Your comments on Shiney Ahuja have been veiled but not friendly? In my career of 33 films I have usually teamed up with my heroes more than once. So SRK, Akshay, Salman and Aamir are my buddies. Since Har Pal was my first film with Shiney and a difficult one, I was not as open. We weren’t best friends but we were amicable co-stars. Which career phase would you describe yourself in? I am in a dual phase of my career…in cricket and films. I have been a bit unfair to films. March onwards I’ll be shooting but not during the IPL matches. You’ve been saying that after Slumdog Millionaire, India will be seen as a land of slums. I didn’t say that! I was just surprised by certain scenes like eyes being gorged out. I didn’t think such things happened. It’s an uplifting film that says that even slum children deserve to live, love

s it true that your name is after Neil Armstrong? Did you ever want to be an astronaut and be on the moon? Yes, my name is after Neil Armstrong and it was given to me by Lataji (Mangeshkar). I never thought of being an astronaut. The moon is coming home! You have worked in a couple of films as child artiste. Was acting your main ambition since childhood? Yes, I wanted to be an actor since I was four-years-old. That time I didn’t understand my family’s association with the film industry and my lineage, but I was sure what I wanted. I waited for months for a good script. People gave me respect and time because I am the son of Nitin Mukesh and grandson of legendary singer Mukesh, but were dillydallying when I asked for work. The first time I gave a screen test was for Johny Gaddar, and I got the film. The film ran into financial problem when it was 75% complete and I remember going from one door to the other asking for finances. After a-year-and-a-half we shot the rest of the film. Though it was not a big film at the box-office, I am glad my work was appreciated. Till today, people call me Johny at times.
In Johny Gaddar, you had a negative role. Were you skeptical about accepting a negative role for the first film? I love doing thrillers. I can personally identify with such roles and I believe there is a lot more to do as an actor if you are doing a thriller. My next film Aa Dekhen Zara is also a thriller. I like character-oriented films where the actor has a multidimensional role, and I get to bash up a few guys and do some action. Is it a conscious decision to do only thrillers? Not really, but I will not deny that I simply love thrillers and concept-driven films. This is where I can research well for the role and put up an interesting portrayal. I am extremely adventurous. For example, I have jumped-off a nine floor building for Aa Dekhen Zara, there is no body double. For me, films are larger than life, yet they have to be simple and beautiful. What is Aa Dekhen Zara all about? The film was earlier called Freeze. Why did the filmmaker decide to give it a retro touch with this title? Yeah, earlier Freeze was the working title of the film but my director and producer thought Aa Dekhen Zara is also an interesting
title and fits the bill. The film is a thriller where I play a photographer and my camera is the real hero as it can see the future. It is after finalising the name of the film we worked on the title track Aa Dekhen Zara, where we have recreated this yesteryear number and I sung the song. Your father and grandfather were great singers. Are you contemplating a career in music? I can sing and play the piano. I can compose music and have learnt dance. I carry my keyboard wherever I go, but I haven’t thought about it as a career. It is more of a hobby. My grandfather wanted to be an actor. When I face the camera I feel I am realising his dream. Through my name also I want to keep my lineage alive. When I told my dad that I sang the Aa Dekhen Zara song, which was sung by Kishore Da, he had a weird look on his face. He was so nervous about the whole issue while I was so upbeat. But, we have not tried to compare it with the original song or tried to say that we are one-up. We just tried to keep the R D Burman flavour alive. You are a star kid. Are you known to throw tantrums? Oh, do I look like I will throw
April 2009
tantrums? It is said that you resemble Hrithik Roshan a lot. I take it as a huge compliment. He is one of the good-looking and talented actors we have and if people are comparing me to him for anything, it is a great compliment and also a big burden. He is an actor who has worked very hard to be where he is today. You have this persona of a charming mystery man. Are you single? Isn’t it important to create a mystery around you? If I present myself as an open book to the whole world, I will have no takers. If I show you each page of a book, will you buy it? As far as my single status is concerned, if my being single makes women happy then yes I am single (laughs). Please tell us who is the mystery woman in your life? I have a special someone in my life but we are still figuring out what is in store for us. All I can tell you is that she is not from the film-industry. She is a great person and I have known her for a very long time. Who is your idol in the film industry? I look up to Amitabh Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan and Aamir Khan, not because they are superstars, but because they have worked real hard to achieve all this. Amitabh Bachchan has worked hard for last 40 years. I wish I am able to do a film like he does at this age. You will be seen in Yash Raj’s next film and have also signed a Madhur Bhandarkar film. You have struggled hard but things are now looking-up, what is your mantra of survival in the industry? Yes, there is New York with John Abrahim and Katrina Kaif, and then there is Madhur Bhandarkar’s Jail. I have also completed a film called Tera Kya Hoga Johny. I believe, the struggle continues till you are working. My mantra of survival in the industry is to be true to yourself and your work. Tell us about one quality that you have which will take you a long way? I am not somebody who will fight with people or hurt anyone. I love to see people smiling. I believe smile is a curve that can set everything straight. I am a different somebody when I play this macho man on screen. I am a baby at heart.

Shahid uses the ‘F’ word His character in Kaminey required Shahid to speak ‘f’ instead of ‘s’. Shahid in fact took lessons to lisp and stammer from leading ENT surgeon Dr. Prabodh Karnik, so that he could play the character convincingly. Vishal Bhardwaj, director of Kaminey wanted to leave no stone unturned to present reality. Hence he took Shahid to Dr. Karnik to show him the two speech defects before he could play his character. The two defects are stammering and lisping. Shahid plays a double role in the film, one Charlie who lisps and other Guddu who stammers. Vishal confirmed the news about meeting Dr. Karnik and said that it was a good learning experience, which will help to make the film close to reality. Shahid too said that after meeting Dr. Karnik, he got a better understanding of speech-impaired people and definitely it will help him play his character as real as possible.

Priyanka Chopra emerging as a powerful brand Priyanka Chopra has had six major releases in 2008, which included Love Story 2050, God Tussi Great Ho, Chamku, Drona, Fashion and Dostana. Apart from which she has been endorsing a lot of brands her diverse brand portfolio includes Nokia, Tag Heuer, Ponds, Lux and Hero Honda. Priyanka is also known to be the most viewed celebrity second to King Khan as far as her endorsements are concerned. The actress has been refusing a lot of endorsements and wants to sign the correct brands and not overexpose herself. Percept Talent Management, a leading talent management conglomerate which exclusively handles Priyanka’s work says that along with Priyanka they have selected right brands for her where she was not overexposed at the same time giving her the right edge. Manish Porwal, CEO, Percept Talent Management says, “We are undoubtedly excited that we have been able to partner Priyanka to reach this slot. The results have been visible. What we need to keep in mind is that her career is not static. We have carefully chosen all her associations and they are fairly visible not overexposed. Today she is the number one name as far as endorsements are concerned.” He further adds. “We have kept a fine balance as female artistes have a very low shelf life. Hence she has to make the most while the sunshines. We try and use her appropriately for the right brands and she gives her clients much more than their demands.” Apart from the brand endorsement, Priyanka is now looking forward to five releases this year including What’s your Raashee, Pyar Impossible, Kameeney, Don 2, and Bekasoor.
Sanjay Dutt shifts base Sanjay Dutt is taking politics very seriously. He is temporarily planning to shift his house from Mumbai to Lucknow. He is doing this because he knows that politics is a full time occupation and a house in Lucknow would make it easier for him to campaign for the forthcoming elections. He has in fact narrowed down two properties in the center of the city with all the modern facilities. The only nod pending is of Manyatta who is not willing to buy any of these properties. She wants to move in to some purani haweli instead of a big house. Judging by past experiences we know that lady Dutt’s decision will be the final decision. Page 18

Celina Jaitley troubled by CISF Jawans. Celina Jaitley was recently confronted with a terrible experience at the Delhi airport. She was on her way back to Mumbai from Delhi. She was at the security check, when the security guards took her LV bag in their hands and started shaking it instead of letting it pass the scanner machine. They mishandled the bag to such an extent that not only did her bag get damaged but also her blackberry phone, her ipod and her expensive cosmetics. The CISF jawans did not stop at that. They started talking rudely to her and her fellow women passengers and passed jokes and comments on them. Frustrated with the whole incident, when she met the jawans’ superior, she was shocked to hear his response. He bluntly told that they were sorry and could not do anything more than that. According to Celina, who too comes from an army background, this was the most horrifying experience of her life.
No questions about Rani please! Says Pam Chopra Pamela Chopra was recently invited to Hyderabad for a seminar. The organisers there wanted her to interact with the panel. She agreed to do so but on one condition. She told the panelists clearly that they were not allowed to ask her any questions about Rani Mukherjee. If that wasn’t enough she also said that no one should even mention her name during the interaction. We have no clue about what is going on in the Chopra family. Is this the Chopra family’s way of telling the media that Rani is no longer part of their life? Guess we have to wait and see…
Amrita’s A-list Sangeet Party!
Amrita Arora’s Sangeet party saw a huge presence of stars and obviously when so many A-listers are present there’s bound to be some scoop. The biggest surprise was the presence of SRK and Salman at the party, which is their first encounter since they had a fight at Katrina’s birthday party. Contrary to the rumours that the two have patched up, they avoided looking at each other. Fortunately Salman arrived early and stayed at a bar outside with brothers Sohail and Arbaaz, while SRK arrived at midnight with wife Gauri and Suzanne Roshan. There were no hellos and SRK and friends went straight inside and kept themselves at the inside bar. Nevertheless the sangeet will be remembered as it brought the industry’s two big enemies under one roof! Forget SRK, Salman did not even keep close to his girlfriend Katrina at the party. They did not interact with each other at the party and stayed away from each other. While Salman left early, Katrina stayed back to enjoy the sangeet. Sajid Khan hosted the sangeet party and did not leave out the chance to tease anyone. His first target was Arbaaz Khan who danced on Ring Ring Ringa from Slumdog Millionaire. He termed the entire sequence as sexual atyachaar. Then he turned to Malaika and Amrita and said that their parents who danced on Disco 82 danced much better than the two put together! April 2009

Rahman’s close brush with death at the Oscars When the entire world was rejoicing on Rahman winning two Oscars, Rahman had also a tragic incident to narrate. He had a close shave with death during one of the rehearsal performance for the Oscars. Recalling the incident he said that while rehearsing at one of the theatres for the Oscars, the Jay Leno Show and the Oprah Winfrey Show, a massive chandelier, covering a portion of the ceiling crashed on the spot a split second after he moved away. He also said that as he moved from the left side of the stage to the right, he could see a massive drop of the chandelier. It was a terrifying experience and a warning from God, not to take success to the head as everything can be snatched in a second.
Bebo moves to cricket too! She has wanted to enter in to IPL since a long time, especially after her archrival Preity Zinta got into it. Now after Shilpa Shetty plunged into Cricket taking over last year’s winning team, Kareena does not want to be left behind in the race. In fact she wanted to get into it last year itself when she decided to buy one of the ICL teams but unfortunately for her it did not materialise. Reason being that boyfriend Saif did not want to put his money in to ICL. He wanted to use his money for production. But this time Kareena is in the forefront. She has been arranging a couple of meetings with business tycoons to buy a team of her choice. And this time she is not depending on Saif. She is planning to invest her own money to buy the team and become its active member. Does that mean insecurity for Saif?
Sonam Kapoor heading for an image makeover Sonam Kapoor has had two releases until now and has appeared as the coy girl next door in both her flicks. Sonam has now decided that it is time for a makeover. But because no filmmaker has approached her, she has turned to her papa Anil Kapoor to get her wish fulfilled. Anil is to produce a movie titled Ayesha that is based on the famous novel Emma written by Jane Austen. Of course Sonam will play the lead role of Emma, who is rich, easy going and flamboyant. Apparently a new actor named Arunodoy Singh and Abhay Deol has also been cast for the movie. Although both her previous movies bombed at the box office, Sonam Kapoor has stolen everyone’s heart with her beauty and freshness. Lets see how much appreciation she gets in a glamorous role. Shahid and Kareena party separately at the same time While it was Shahid Kapur’s birthday party, Kareena threw a bash of her own, as she was not invited for Shahid’s party. A source says, “When Kareena heard about Shahid’s party, she immediately decided to host her own at Saif’s Bandra home. Although hers was a gathering of select friends like designer Aki Narula, her make-up artiste, Mallika Bhatt, designer Shabina Khan (who was also invited to Shahid’s party), Amrita Arora, Malaika Arora Khan, Arbaaz Khan and a few others.” Shahid had a bash at a lounge bar at a suburban five-star hotel. However, exgirlfriend Kareena did not feature in the list. Hearing about Shahid’s party, she planned an impromptu dinner party at Saif’s Bandra home the same night. Amongst guests present at Shahid’s party were Farah Khan and Shirish Kunder, his Kaminey director Vishal Bhardwaj, Sajid and Wardha Nadiadwala, Ken Ghosh, Ahmed Khan and wife Shaira, designer Shabina Khan and trainer Abbas. However a friend of Kareena denies the allegations, she says, What rubbish! Kareena didn’t throw any party. She was shooting double shifts for Rensil D’ Silva’s next film and some patchwork for Kambakht Ishq. Maybe designer Akki Narula threw some party but Bebo wasn’t involved in it.” So many variations, one wonders who to believe!
Sush does not want to see Randeep’s face Sushmita Sen has refused to be a part of any promotional campaign of her upcoming film Karma Aur Holi with co-star Randeep Hooda. Randeep was Sushmita’s ex-beau. When things turned sour between the two, Sushmita had taken a step ahead and wanted to reconcile with Randeep. However Randeep was not interested in getting back into Sushmita’s life which hurt her. The producers of the film Sa Re Ga Ma were in for a shock when Sushmita conveyed this to them. They did not want any further problems before the release and hence chose to bend down to Sushmita’s demands. They will now keep separate interviews for both. Randeep however denies any such thing and on the contrary said that Sushmita wants him to come on board for the promotion of the film! Sush chose to remain silent.
Salman quits drinking Salman has apparently stopped drinking since his birthday on 27th December on Aamir Khan’s request. Aamir and Salman who were not on talking terms earlier now share a very warm friendship. In fact, both have been seen visiting each other’s house. Aamir and wife Kiran visit Salman’s house for dinner and in turn Salman too pays him a visit. On one such visit, Aamir happened to see a poster of Salman from Veer where he appeared unfit. He took up the opportunity to tell Salman about the bad effects of alcohol. He also told him to get rid of his habit before it is too late. He requested Salman to quit smoking and also suggested a revised workout, since his character in Veer demanded him to look fit, slim and trim. Salman readily agreed to his friend’s advice and has taken it seriously too! April 2009

Its Dutts turn now After cops disturbed Preity Zinta and Hrithik Roshan’s birthday party after getting complaints from the neighborhood, it was Dutt’s turn when they were celebrating their first wedding anniversary. Apparently this time it was not the music that disturbed the neighbours but the media crowded outside the building that was a concern for them. The entire industry was present for the anniversary bash and obviously the media wanted to capture as much as they could. So they crowded at the building. A lady neighbour came out and started firing the media for disturbing her and told hem to go away. Sanjay Dutt quickly came out of the party, went to the lady’s house and calmed her down. The lawyer lady was overwhelmed by this personal approach by Mr. Dutt. So the cops were given rest and the party continued as usual.
Adhyayan Suman’s Spot boy cheats wannabe actresses He apparently took money from these actresses with a promise to give them a role opposite Adhyayan. The scam was discovered when Adhyayan caught him cheating red handed. Post that, they discovered the portfolio of these girls when his baggage was checked. According to sources, Adhyayan had appointed Shiva as his spot boy around a year and a half ago. But of late Suman Jr. had suspicion about Shiva pocketing money. He apparently pocketed Rs. 700, which Suman had given him to purchase certain stuff. Thereafter Adhyayan lost his digicam, which made him to check Shiva’s bag. He found not only the digicam but also the pictures of these girls. Although Shiva has been removed from his job, the Suman’s are trying to reach the girls who have been cheated by Shiva.
Govinda strikes again No, not with the hits but this time with his superstitious attitude! And his time the victim was the director of his upcoming film Showman, Tigamanshu Dhulia. When Govinda was listening to the lyrics of one of the songs, he got a call saying that his best friend Salman had lost his dog. He got upset so much so that not only did the incident sadden him but also made him superstitious about the song. He asked the director to change the lyrics of the song. He said that only listening to the lines could bring such bad news, then what would the picturisation bring. This left the director with no option but to go ahead and change the lyrics. This is not the first incident where Govinda has created problems for his director. Page 22

SRK one of the most powerful people in the world According to one poll, Shah Rukh Khan is placed in the list of 50 Powerful People in the world. We all know he is the King of Bollywood, but now he also become one of the most powerful people in the world. On that note SRK said, “I asked my family if I was indeed one of the 50 most powerful people in the world as I myself can’t believe it. I mean the guy who serves me tea in the morning doesn’t put the right amount of sugar in it. I believe humility, efforts and goodness is all it takes to be powerful. You have to be yourself, only then can you be better than the rest.” Quite a powerful talk from Mr. Powerful, isn’t it?
The bad, bad, man Varun Khandelwal, started out being the bad kid in Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki and Aathvan Vachan. Varun is now back in the limelight playing the bad boy in NDTV Imagines latest sitcom Jyoti. Varun seems to be the perfect pick for the role with his baddie influence not just working with the audiences but on the sets as well. In fact, the crew thinks that no one could have looked and behaved the part as well as Varun. “I feel that my acting is being appreciated and that if I can instill anger in the viewer, I have given a good shot!” grins Varun with appreciation.
Freida magazine cover queen To think that just months ago Freida was virtually nobody, but now after eight Oscars for her debut film Slumdog Millionaire, this Indian modelturned actress is now hot property for magazine covers. Freida has become a much in demand magazine cover girl back home in India. She dominated the newsstands across India in March with her face appearing on the cover to the likes of Cosmopolitan, Vogue and on men’s magazine Maxim. The 24-year-old beauty has described her dramatic rise to fame as a ‘dream’. Posing for covers didn’t come hard for the actress as she started her career posing in advertisements for products like Wrigley’s Chewing Gum. “I used to anchor a travel show in India, which is clearly not acting, and I had done a little bit of modeling. Both of those things helped me with the camera,” she said. “I always wanted to act in films, but in India it’s very difficult to become an actress if you haven’t got a godfather - someone with influence, always a man, in the industry to help get you into auditions. “But I didn’t need a godfather for ‘Slumdog...’ I just went along, did the audition with Dev and then Danny picked me,” she explained. Despite the success of her first film and her passion for acting, she is not sure of her career in the profession. “I have no idea whether acting is a future for me, but I would like to do more film work. The reaction to Slumdog has been beyond my wildest expectations.” In what will be only her second film, Freida is now lined up to star in a Woody Allen movie alongside Hollywood stars Josh Brolin, Naomi Watts and Anthony Hopkins. Filming will start in London this summer. April 2009

John Abraham in anti-smoking campaign One of Bollywood’s fittest stars, John Abraham is joining an anti-smoking campaign. The campaign, which was initiated by the Health Minister Ambumani Ramadoss, is aimed at promoting no smoking among today’s youth. Indian Cricket skipper MS Dhoni has also joined the campaign. The Minister said that the entire Cricket team wants to take part in the antitobacco campaign. The Minister went on to say that personalities like Sachin Tendulkar are on his wish list. He wants to hear the entire youth fraternity saying that smoking is bad. The ad is yet to be shot and will go on air soon, followed by a bigger, better and successful campaign. Because the campaign is aimed to target youth, the Health Ministry wants to get young players like Leander Paes, Viswanathan Anand and Abhinav Bindra. The minister acknowledges that the campaign is “big and ambitious” and will therefore take time to materialise.
Sushmita Sen gets slammed by ex-boyfriend Randeep Randeep Hooda is upset with ex-girlfriend Sushmita Sen. He believes she’s saying nasty things about her forthcoming release Karma Aur Holi that has him starring opposite her. Sushmita apparently accused the producers of promoting the film by sending out sleazy stories. She also demanded that her bedroom scenes with Hooda be deleted. There were also rumours that she made it clear to the producers that she didn’t want Randeep around if they wanted her to promote the film. She even told an entertainment portal that it’s “not a dignified film”. She was reportedly upset with the postproduction especially with her love making scenes with former boyfriend Randeep Hooda being aired in the film trailers. When Hooda finally decided to speak up he said, “If you don’t want to promote the film, don’t promote it, but don’t go out of your way to badmouth the film. It’s highly unethical and absolutely unprofessional. I don’t see any sleaze promotion. By not promoting the movie, she is promoting it even more, so that just defeats her purpose.”
Asin steps towards greater heights After the super success of Ghajini, critics went gaga over Ghajini girl Asin and said she will go places. And that’s exactly what the South Indian beauty is doing. The actress is aiming very big with the multi-lingual Walt Disney production, 19 Steps to be directed by Bharath Bala. “The film is being produced by Walt Disney and a good portion will be shot in Kerala. Kamal Haasan plays an important role in the film, which also has popular Japanese actor Tadanobu Asano. This is going to be made in Tamil, Japanese and English and would commence in the second half of this year,” Asin said. “For 19 Steps, I am now soon going to learn martial arts because the storyline demands that,” added Asin. Written by veteran scriptwriter MT Vasudevan Nair, the film narrates the tale of a Samurai warrior trying to conquer the ancient Indian martial art of Kalaripayattu. Kamal Haasan plays the role of an Indian martial arts guru. The South Indian actress made her debut in the Sathyan Anthikkad-directed Narendran Makan Jayakanthan Vaka in 2001 at the age of 15. Since then, she has acted in both Tamil and Telegu films besides Ghajini. Asin is now busy completing her second Bollywood film London Dreams with Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan. Good going, gal! Bipasha Basu gave up late night parties for John Bipasha gave up late night parties because of hunk John Abraham’s outrageous demands, even the gutsy babe Bipasha Basu’s feminist principles take a back seat. The Bombshell, who is known to be a night bird as she loves to go party hopping, has decided to bid goodbye to her wild night-outs as her beau doesn’t approve of her fun-seeking ways. The couple that has stood the test of time for many years now is touted to be one of the most happening love-birds of B-town. But off screen, this ‘It’ couple is not as fashionable as it would seem. According to Bips, the seemingly uber-cool John Abraham is a protective boyfriend, who is much too concerned of the company his lady keeps. Speaking to News Daily, the spunky actress said, “I used to go to late night parties and clubs earlier but now I don’t have time for all that. In fact John Abraham didn’t like it. He used to accompany me every time I went to such parties. When you are on the floor, there are lots of people who just try to come close to dance with me even if you don’t want. Quite often they misbehave. It’s a place where people drink and dance. So there are possibilities of such things which may annoy you.” So, taking a way out the actress just decided to give her parties a miss. “If somebody came closer to me, John used to immediately come down on the floor and become a kind of protective wall for me. I enjoyed my parties for a while but later on I realised that John didn’t like it. So I stopped doing that. Since then it has been a long time that I went for any dance party”, added Bips.

Ranbir wants to be at par with Akshay Ranbir apparently refused to endorse a low-end denim brand that he was offered. Now the offer has passed on to Shahid Kapur who took it up willingly. Ranbir Kapoor has already started throwing tantrums around. He recently refused to be cast in Kunal Kohli’s upcoming comedy film, as he wanted some major changes in the script. Even though Ranbir was paid a huge sum of 1.25 Crores for endorsement, he did not take it up as it was low end and Akshay Kumar endorses the same brand but of a higher range. He wanted to endorse the high-end range along with Akshay. Strangely, Ranbir’s girlfriend Deepika endorses the women’s range of the same brand. April 2009

n India, a woman is traditionally gifted jewellery at the time of her wedding. The jewellery is from both her parents and her in-laws. The logic is simple. Apart from the obvious purpose of ornamentation, the jewellery is her safe-guard against the well-known rainy day. Indian women want their jewellery well crafted. Every market in India has its own share of gold and silversmiths. While gold jewellery is pretty much a favourite with the rich and the affluent, village belles swear by silver. Many astrologers tell you specifically the clarity and carat required to ward off the evil eye or reverses a spell of bad luck. Some of the gemstones are emeralds, sapphires, rubies, garnets, amethysts, corals and turquoise. The craft of cutting and polishing stones to achieve the most gleaming facets has been honed to perfection by the artisans of Jaipur and Calcutta. Delhi, Jaipur and Udaipur are famous for the age-old technique of setting gems in gold called

Kundan. It is the Mughal-inspired art of setting precious stones like diamonds, emeralds and rubies in gold and silver.

The women of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Maharashtra have great passion for gold. This shiny metal is considered auspicious, and is considered a status symbol. Even the humblest bride down south has some gold in her trousseau. Handcrafted gold jewellery is still very much the norm, although

machine-made trinkets are fast catching on. The major difference between the jewellery of North and South India is in the detail, delicacy and motifs. While North Indians think small is beautiful, South Indians certainly believe otherwise. The various kinds of adornments in silver are: the spherical pendant for the forehead, dangling earrings called jhumkas, the choker, the nose ring, a girdle for the waist, bracelets, anklets with tiny bells on them and toe rings. Silver jewellery with ornate tribal designs is popular. Bangles add grace to the feminine beauty. India has an ample treasure of exquisite, colourful bangles. Shellac Bangle, brightly colored lac bangles is an inexpensive buy in Delhi and Rajasthan. In the pink city of Jaipur, lac ornaments are a familiar sight in every bazaar. Enameled and intricately designed gold bangles are a sort after adornment. The dazzling bangles often studded with glass gems, spirals of base-metal wire in the middle of a curvy striping of other colours.

hromawhite TRx is a synergistic brightening system that works to lessen the appearance of hyperpigmentation in as little as four weeks. This system takes a three step approach to control hyperpigmentation while focusing on improving skin health: preparing the skin, preventing future hyperpigmentation and protecting skin against elements that can cause discolouration. Uneven skin tone, or hyperpigmentation, is the end result of an over production of melanin. Melanin is what gives skin and hair its colour. It helps protect skin against damaging UV light and absorbs heat from the sun. However, an overproduction of melanin stimulated by extreme sun exposure, hormones, or scarring,
leads to a mottled, uneven skin tone. 1. Sun exposure: When skin is continuously exposed to UV light, sun damage occurs. Brown spots become visible as a result of too much melanin being formed to help protect skin from UV light. 2. Hormones: Melasma is hormone-related hyperpigmentation caused by increased hormone stimulation. Women who are pregnant most commonly experience it or women taking contraceptives, but can also be a reaction to cosmetics or medications. 3. Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation: This is a darkening of skin that’s the result of scarring, which can be caused by acne lesions or skin injury.

hen my bride arrived at my studio for her trial, she didn’t know what kind of look she wanted for her wedding. As with most working woman, time is a problem, and Shabnum is one of those who lacked skincare and hair care. Her whole life seemed to revolve around her work. I then stepped in and guided her in the correct direction. She left her look entirely up to my discression. Shabnum has a square face, and I needed to use colours that completely softened her look, and to match her warm personality. Initially she was very skeptical, but then was amazed with the end result. After shaping her eyebrows, I noticed an immediate facelift. She looked less tired and her eye area

ear readers Every now and then, I come across something interesting that someone has said. It could be in an interview or an excerpt from a book. It could even be something a friend has said in passing. I like to think of them as little messages from a parallel universe. Often, it speaks to me about a situation I may be going through and comes as a form of advice.

I’ve realised that this has been happening to me quite a bit recently. One incident was when I was reading a book, The Unmistakable Touch of Grace, by Cheryl Richardson. To be honest, I wasn’t really enjoying the book, but as I do with all books that I don’t feel strongly connected to, I still continue to read till the end. I figure there must be at least one thing I can learn from the text. One morning on my way to work, I was waiting for the elevator in my apartment building. I had my book in my hand and without really thinking, I just opened it to the page I had bookmarked. My eyes fell on a paragraph in the middle of the page where the author wrote: “…I rarely told the truth about how I felt or what I needed in a given situation. Instead, I’d turn myself into a human pretzel trying to be who I thought others wanted me to be.” I got a shiver down my arm. Just that morning I was feeling weak. Almost as though I was bending over backwards for people who I doubted appreciated my actions. As I made

my way to work that morning, I felt like that passage spoke directly to me. I made a conscious decision to change my mood for the day, and I ended up feeling so much lighter and content with myself. Another time when I had a “wow” moment was when I was half watching the Oprah Winfrey Show. She was interviewing the cast of The Secret Life of Bees. I wasn’t really paying attention, but when it was time to chat to musician/singer/

actress, Alicia Keys, then I heard her say this: “I never want to ever find myself too comfortable anywhere...”
I stopped what I was doing to pay attention to the TV. I didn’t understand it, because we all long for some kind of comfort in our lives. One that makes us feel secure. Keys went onto say: “…because I don’t think you can grow if you’re too comfortable. Even with my music, I like to do things that I’m not quite comfortable with, because it pushes me to do better.” Again, I felt like I was getting this message from somewhere beyond. A few days prior to this, I felt like I was reaching yet another crossroads in my life. Which way to turn? Go forward, take the road less traveled or merely stay in the comfort zone that I’m in now? I’ve always been goal-orientated, and once I set my mind and heart on something, I’ll stop at nothing until I’ve achieved it. I want to look back on my life and give myself a pat on the back for all I’ve achieved and accomplished during my lifetime. This is my primary goal. I also feel that I have been receiving these ‘messages’ because I’ve opened myself to believing that such things are possible. Coincidences don’t just happen. Everything happens in due course. Do you receive messages like these? I’d love to hear from you. Till next time, take care and be happy!

he Vanity Box is the result of a childhood dream that spoke of fairytale weddings, glamorous brides and of course, prince charming. Not even in my wildest dreams, did I think that someday, I would play a pivotal role in making every future brides dreams a reality by creating her look. The journey in creating a masterpiece is a culmination of years of experience, passion and a flair for art and all things aesthetic. Being described as a true perfectionist myself, brides can be rest assured that picture perfect magnificence is guaranteed, because nothing gives me more pleasure than seeing a brides

eyes light up in delight at her own masterpiece. After years of experience in fashion, photography, make-up as well as fashion shows, I found my true calling in bridal work. The need for a mobile artist was never made more vocal as more young brides were still holding onto traditions and customs and leaving the house for hair and make-up on the wedding day was a definite NO NO and frowned upon by the elders in the family. The highlight of my career was working with the best make-up artists in Mumbai at Film City on the sets of a Bollywood movie. Meeting the Big B and a hug and a kiss from John Abraham was an experience that was nothing short of breathless!! As a result of my high standard of work, I have been requested to return to India to be the chief make-up artist on the set of a music video in Mumbai. his young contemporary designer from the city of joy brings to Bridal Asia 2009, her collection ‘The cross over bride’ which is all about the 21st century bride. Its about beautiful, independent women who follow high street fashion; but when they get married they want to be a ‘traditional Indian bride’. Luxurious hand crafted pieces, vegetable dyes in ravishing colors, heritage brocades, sheer muls, flowy chiffons’ and delicate satins all put together pulsating on the 21st century beat. Silhouettes of Kameez are inspired from dresses, jumpers, men’s style shirts, structured jackets and wraps with ethnic embroidery. Churidars replaced by skinny pants and coloured translucent leggings. Saris evolve to be sexier, delicate and sheer with colored printed petticoats and wrap shirt blouses. Puff sleeves make a comeback with detailed armbands. There’s a little spunk, a little peek a boo translucence, cheeky detailing combined with mysterious color combinations. April 2009

e were recently invited to this beautiful city courtesy of The Phoenix Group, which launched its new hotel Zuri in Bangalore. The hotel interestingly is inspired by the great wild life of Africa and that’s why it’s called Zuri. We had mixed thoughts as to why would anyone launch such a grand hotel when travel industry was not at a peak. But our thoughts changed as we visited the city and understood that technology is a booming sector, which had led to massive traffic of tourists to this city. Besides better infrastructure, scenery, Bangalore also offers some luxurious staying and splurge. The Zuri Whitefield, Bengaluru, has it all - warm hospitality, contemporary amenities and modern luxury. The hotel is also a member of the Preferred Hotel Group, one of the world’s leading Hotel Reservation Networks. Situated close to ITPL and just 45 minutes away from the Bengaluru International Airport, The Zuri Whitefield is a hotel that gives its guest many options, especially when it comes to dining. With 5 different F&B options, The

The new Volvo S60 gives the world a glimpse of what the all-new Volvo is going to look like when it is launched internationally in 2010 and in South Africa early 2011.
A glimpse of the next-generation
I
t will be one of the strongest players in the segment where the competition is razor sharp. The coupe-inspired lines that gave the original S60 its characteristic stance are even more pronounced in the next generation. The sporty design gives visual promise of an enthusiastic drive. The driving properties are better than in any previous Volvo. The car’s exterior gives a clear indication of what customers can expect of all new S60. The front naturally sports the enlarged iron mark in the trapezoidal grille. The grill itself has a new appearance with structured horizontal vanes adding refinement to its form. The DNA lamps that flank the grill give emphasis to the vertical stance of the front and promote the bonnet’s V-shape. The angled headlamps flow up into the strongly sculptural bonnet. Combined with the lower air in-take’s reverse trapezoidal shape, this gives the concept car a very expressive “face”. The concept car’s headlamps unite classic Scandinavian
Volvo S60
influences with modern high-tech. In each of the headlamps, the lights create a sculpture creating the image of two miniature Viking longboats sailing side by side, one for the main beam and one for the dipped beam. When driving in the dark, the light is reflected from the concealed, upward-facing High Performance LED bulbs, projected ahead by the ships’ filled sails. An entirely new lateral shoulder line, forming a gentle double wave, accompanies the car’s slim coupe roof-line and window graphics. Stretching from the headlamps all the way to the tail, it adds excitement and plays with the surface and its highlights. Both the seven-spoke 20-inch wheels and the tread of the lowprofile tyres have been specially designed. The bronze-painted brake calipers match the “Warm Liquid Copper” livery. The unique rear parallelogram doors offer a spectacular show when they are opened and shut. Door opening is initiated by pressing on a button and the movement starts off in the traditional way. In the next phase,
the forward section also swings out away from the car’s body and the door glides parallel with the side of the car until it reaches its end position by the rear wheel. The interior is packed with exciting details, all of which together create a Scandinavian fresh light feeling, full of visual harmony.
“
The sporty design gives visual promise of an enthusiastic drive and I can assure you here and now that the all-new S60 will live up to that promise
”
In the middle of the four-seater car glitters the jewel in the crown: a floating center stack made out of handmade, solid crystal. It floats like a gentle, calm wave from the instrument panel all the way to the rear seat backrest. The entire driver’s environment has been designed to provide total overview and convenient control.

The speedometer is designed as a three-dimensional glass spiral. The low numbers appear closest to the eye and the figures appear to be increasingly distant as you accelerate. The idea is that the speedometer should provide a visual reminder of the forward motion. The lightweight contoured seats are made of soft Light Blond leather with contrasting stitching. The seats are attached to the center console’s lower section and inner sill, which means that they don’t actually touch the floor. The upper part of the doors is faced with genuine blond Birchwood. Two parallel slits create a wave-shaped protrusion whose upper section forms a comfortable leather armrest. The S60 also presents a groundbreaking safety innovation that, among other things, can detect a pedestrian who steps out into the path of the car - and the car’s full braking power is automatically activated if the driver does not respond to the danger.
