A prescription for success Briggs helps keep pharmacy tradition alive BY MICHELLE MILLERCARL GOLD COUNTRY NEWS SERVICE

Liz Briggs is surrounded by history. As part-owner of the Auburn Drug Co. in Downtown Auburn, Briggs works in the second oldest continuously run pharmacy in the state. She’s surrounded by dusty ledgers filled with prescriptions that date back to the pharmacy’s establishment in 1896. And she’ll proudly share the shop’s history with anyone who is curious. Her efforts to keep the store and other Auburn traditions alive well into the future are what helped her be chosen as this year’s Women in Business Woman of the Year. “In a time when the influx of ‘big box’ stores are making it tougher and tougher for independently owned pharmacies to stay afloat, co-owners Liz Briggs and Charlie Fink have done just that with Auburn Drug Co.,” wrote Rob Haswell, who nominated Briggs. It all started 32 years ago when Briggs took a part-time job at the drug store’s soda fountain. Working behind the marble counter was the perfect job for the 20-year-

old. But when the pharmacy started getting busier, owners Charlie and Patti Fink asked for help with prescriptions. “I wanted to have fun,” Briggs recalled. “I didn’t want to go back in the pharmacy with all the serious stuff.” She accepted the post. But it wasn’t until Briggs was faced with being the breadwinner after her husband became unable to work that she saw the job as a career. She later took classes to become a certified pharmacy technician and started buying merchandise for the store. Today, she’s also part-owner of Auburn Drug Co. With gift items, first aid supplies, ice cream sundaes and more, Briggs calls Auburn Drug a “mini-mall” for whatever a customer would need. “The customers (are my favorite) because they really trust us,” she said. “They know we care about them and their welfare.” Shopping local is a passion and Briggs is a member of the Think Auburn First steering committee. “We are such a small city,” she said. “We have to all stick together.” Her desire to preserve Auburn’s history is put to good use as a member of the city’s Historic Design Review Commission, where she makes decisions on building facades and signage that help keep Auburn’s character.

in New Mexico She’s also watched her niece Andrea Packheiser take a similar career path to hers. Packheiser started at the soda fountain at Auburn Drug, too, and returned years later as a pharmacist. Her advice to other women would be to keep your eyes on your goal. “Have a vision and look out there and see success at the end,” she said. “There are always things in front of you, but don’t let them stop you.”

Dental job gives her reason to smile FIVE QUESTIONS WITH CORRIE ATTEBERRY Occupation: Dental hygenist Company: Mark Abel D.D.S. and Brook Udall D.D.S. dental office Age: 52 Education: Associate of science degree; dental hygiene school When she’s not at work: She likes to go horseback riding in the Auburn Lake Trails area

Corrie Atteberry

1. What are your biggest challenges/successes? I guess my biggest challenge is to get people to brush and floss their teeth. It’s frustrating because it’s not rocket science, it’s easy to do. When I get someone to start taking care of their mouth, maybe someone who’s starting to have problems who actually listens to me, that’s what feels really good, to save someone from losing their teeth later down the road. 2. What advice would you give to women interested in your field? I give this advice all the time because I love what I do. Definitely if you’re single, go anywhere you have to go to get into school, There are only a few schools around and there’s a wait list. It took me two years to get in. Be willing to go and leave the state of California for two years and once you get your license it’s just a matter of coming back and taking the California state boards.

Corrie Atteberry cleans a patient’s teeth. Atteberry never gets bored being a dental hygienist because “every mouth is different.”

3. How do you balance career and family? It’s a great career, especially for women with small children. You can work two days a week, make decent money and be at home with a child the rest of the week. I never take my work home with me. It is such a great job. You can pick and choose hours, I never work overtime and it’s easy work. (Corrie has two grown children, four grandchildren and has been married for 21 years.) 4. What is your favorite part of your job? Meeting the people. The day never drags, I see a different patient every hour. The day flies by with so many different people and interesting conversations. People ask me, “Aren’t you bored doing the same thing every day?” But every mouth is different. It’s not as redundant as you think.

“(My favorite part is) meeting the people. The day never drags, I see a different patient every hour. The day flies by with so many different people and interesting conversations.” 5. What do you do for fun? I ride horses. I live in a gated community in Cool (Auburn Lake Trails). There are literally 1,000 acres with horse trails around here. I can get on my horse and ride out the back gate, and get out there in the fresh air and quiet.

Keeping an eye on your car is her business BY ANDREW DILUCCIA GOLD COUNTRY MEDIA

It started out simply enough for Stacy Pedersen — she was looking for a job. Thirteen years later, it’s now a career. Pedersen, a working partner and service manager for The Master Technicians, Inc. on Locksley Lane in Auburn, started out working in the office doing clerical tasks. Then, in just six months, Pedersen was promoted to service writer. “Actually, the owner of this facility originally hired me 13 years ago to just be an office girl,” Pedersen said. “He saw something in me, he saw that I could understand cars, the technology of cars. And I could turn it around and explain it to people in non-technical terms, so the customers can get a better understanding.” Since that promotion, the recently married 41year-old has become an ASE-certified service consultant, specializing in the four brands The Master Technicians, Inc. focuses on — Toyota, Honda, Lexus and Acura. “I still write all the service and I do the payroll — I kind of wear several different hats every day,” she said. “But I enjoy it. I like to gain knowledge on the new cars and what’s coming, the different features they have — to me that’s fascinating.” Pedersen, who is heavily involved in the community through Auburn Daybreak Rotary and the local chamber of com-

Autovantage Service Center

Clear Path to success

Your Full Service Auto Maintenace & Repair Facility With the closing of Auburn Nissan in April 2008, I was left unemployed for the first time in my life. I had a solid job offer from my previous employer, Future Nissan, but it had always been a dream of mine to open my own shop. The safe choice was to take the old job back but Becki knew that this would not satisfy me. With her encouragement we made the choice to open Autovantage Service Center here in Auburn. Becki immediately took the ball and began running with it and at times dragging me along. She spear headed the entire project that would become Autovantage - from finding the location to setting up the financing we needed and everything else in between. All the while balancing her other jobs as a Human Resource Manager and mother to our three children. From the moment we opened, Becki joined the Auburn Chamber of Commerce and is now an Ambassador for the Chamber. She is also part of the Auburn Leadership Class of 2010. I am excited that she is now here with us full time while still juggling our children. To see her with our customers is amazing because you can see that she truly does care about each person that walks through our doors. If you have met her you know what I am talking about and if you haven’t met her I believe you’re missing out. Being an automotive technician all my adult life and trying on the new hats of owner and manager has been a challenge and scary at times. What Becki has brought to the table has calmed my nerves and brought solutions to things I have no clue about. My wife is the glue that bonds the whole puzzle of what I call my life. I can whole heartedly say that there is no way that Autovanatge Service Center would be where it is or even in existence without the efforts of my beautiful wife. I just want to acknowledge the amazing businesswoman that my wife is. Thanks honey for all of your support! -Bryan McGinnis

1. What are your biggest challenges/successes? Being taken seriously as a woman in a very male dominated field was challenging. The first thing Norman Andregg told me was that women have no place in this business. This made me more determined and I decided my best course was to win him over. My success was getting my land surveyor license and becoming respected in the field.

FIVE QUESTIONS WITH CHRISTINE JOHNSON Occupation: Land surveyor at Clear Path Land Evolvement Inc. Education: Earned a liberal arts degree at Mankato State College in Minnesota. Took drafting classes at Sierra College. Studied land surveying at Fresno State. Mentored by Norman Andregg, one of the original surveyors in Auburn. When she’s not at work:

2. What advice would you give to women interested in your field? It’s a fabulous field for women. More women than ever before are going into it. It’s such a fascinating study. Women are more accepted now than when I started out. It seems the men involved are pretty bright and open-minded, and are more willing to recognize those traits in another person, be they male or female.

3. How do you balance career and family? When I started working in Auburn it helped because I could live and work in the same town. When things took off, my kids were already in high school, so I was able to devote time to my career. It’s important to have a

personal life and people tend to think if you’re not married to your career you’re not serious. I used to manage quite a large group of people and I stressed to them they need to have a personal life. 4. What is your favorite part of your job? I really enjoy my clients. I love coming up with innovative ways to help them solve their problems. I try to keep no more than half a dozen clients at once, so I can give them the attention they deserve. 5. What do you do for fun? I show dogs. I compete in agility and herding and obedience training. I’ve bred several champion dogs. I have six Pembroke Welsh corgis, from 15 ½ to six months old. ~ Paul Cambra

Machado women keep orchard turning BY STEPHANIE BREITBART GOLD COUNTRY MEDIA

achado Orchards has been the go-to place for apples in Auburn for almost 90 years. Now also famous for its freshly-baked pies, juice and carmel apples, the orchard is the prefect destination for any tasty treat. Behind the current success of the family business are Bobbi Machado and Shawnie Kale, two women who love what they do. Machado, who ran the family orchard along with her late husband, Gil, for more than 60 years has spent many long hours on the farm. “We opened at 8 a.m. and closed at 7 p.m.,” Machado said. “And then spent every night at the packing shed washing and packing apples, those were 14hour days.” Machado said the farm was small at the beginning and manageable, but still a lot of work went into it each day. “I’ve put in so many pipelines and sprinklers,” Machado said. “You wouldn’t believe all the things I’ve done here.” Machado’s son, Gary, now runs the 33-acre orchard along with his fiancée, Shawnie Kale, and Machado couldn’t be happier. “Shawn really cracks the whip around here and gets things done,” Machado said. “She’s been a good asset.” In addition to managing the store, pie kitchen and giving daily school tours, Kale also takes in the many pie orders the Machado Orchards are famous for. The orchard sells about 200 pies each day of the week, 300 a day on the weekends and hundreds more during the holidays. “Our busiest week is Thanksgiving,” Kale said. “Last year we had orders for 3,200 pies and that’s not including several hundred walk-ins.” Baking hundreds of pies a

Shawnie Kale and Bobbi Machado stand in front of a large selection of apples available at Machado Orchards. Machado Orchards is open every day from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., May through December. The 33-acre orchard grows apples, pears, peaches, plums and figs and is well known for its homemade pies and fresh apple juice.

week as well as producing 600 to 900 gallons of apple juice every few days are just some of

the ways these women stay busy. “People don’t realize the work that’s involved in an orchard,” Machado said, “This year we had a freeze and we lost just about all our plums. You’re at the mercy of the elements.” Although the days are long, both Kale and Machado agree that customer satisfaction is their number one goal. “We know just about everyone around here,” Kale said. “We are on a first-name basis, it’s really nice.” Machado says she has the best customers in town. says they are loyal and have been coming in for years. “Everybody hugs,” Machado said. “We try and keep it very friendly and not commercial, that’s just the way I’d like to keep it, very welcoming.” Machado Orchards is open seven days a week, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Machado said there’s always work to be done so taking days off is not an option. “What needs to get done, gets done,” Machado said, “You don’t get sick around here, there are no days off.” In fact, Machado said in all the years, the orchard has only

closed once — for her husband’s funeral. Although Machado’s son is now running the orchards, she still drops in daily to make sure everything is running right, and to see familiar faces. “I come down here most every day,” Machado said. “Just because it’s home.” When she’s not at the orchards, Machado is an active member in several clubs in Auburn, and enjoys traveling. “Next week I’m leaving for China and Vietnam,” Machado said. “I’ve got to make up for lost time.”

Assistant principal familiar face at Placer BY LORYLL NICOLAISEN GOLD COUNTRY MEDIA

im Barry has a strong sense of school pride. Barry, a 1985 Placer High School graduate, is currently in her third year acting as assistant principal at her alma mater, where she also spent 16 years teaching English. “I was a cheerleader when I was here, so I definitely have school spirit,” Barry said. “I think I had such a good time and fond memories, I love to see kids have those same experiences. ” Barry said she’s known since her sophomore year in high school that she wanted to teach English. She just wasn’t necessarily sure she’d want to come back to Placer. “I thought it would be really weird to teach with people who taught me,” she said. It was a little strange at first, Barry admits, but there are a million reasons why Barry loves working at Placer. “I’m glad I actually came back to teach here,” Barry said. Barry credits Dave Horsey, then-Placer principal and current Placer Union High School District superintendent, with guiding her into an administrative role. Barry, who earned her bachelor’s degree in English from California State University, Sacramento, also has a teaching credential, master’s degree in education leadership and an administrative credential from the same school. “It definitely presented new challenges. I feel like I learn something new every day,” Barry said. “You could

She’s only been a hairstylist for three and a half years, but The Artistic’s Jessica Swenson-Kapki‘s work is already garnering attention. She was recently chosen from 60 applicants throughout the United States and Canada to be part of the eight-member Intercoiffure Nouveau creative team for the Fall Atelier of Intercoiffure America-Canada in New York. Swenson-Kapki, 23, is a little amazed at receiving the honor. “I’m really excited,” she said. “I’ve always wanted to go to New York and never thought I’d win a competition so soon in my career.” As a self-described “girly girl” growing up in Cool, Swenson-Kapki always had fun doing hair, but didn’t think about going into it as a job until her sister gave her the idea. After earning her license at cosmetology school, she worked for a year in Folsom before joining The Artistic salon in Auburn. FIVE QUESTIONS WITH THERESE JOHNSON

The Working Women of Chapel of the Hills are helping to make those final arrangements worry-free.

Amber Einspahr Funeral Arranger

Occupation: Reiki master practitioner and teacher, senior care consultant. Age: 53 years 1. What are your biggest challenges/successes? Reiki is energy work. It’s used in conjunction with massage. A lot of therapists use it with massage. It’s a holistic alternative therapy. My biggest challenge right now is getting funding for reiki research for Alzheimer’s disease. I’ll be offering reiki to caregivers who have clients with dementia. My biggest success has been eliminating difficult behaviors in dementia clients. Reiki makes the person with dementia’s moments of lucidity last longer and makes the caregiver’s role easier because it keeps patients functioning longer. I’ve been able to eliminate wandering behavior and paranoia, which are classic symptoms of Alzheimer’s and dementia sufferers.

Fortunately I work out of my office at home, which makes it a little easier for me to balance my work and home life. I can be flexible because I am self-employed and can set my own schedule. That’s an advantage of being a therapist. You can set your own hours.

Skier brings mountain to people’s lives BY TODD MORDHORST GOLD COUNTRY MEDIA

amily bonding is tough to come by these days. Bev Mann is devoted to bringing families closer in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. She’s the director of the Auburn Ski Club’s Gift of Skiing program and is responsible for introducing dozens of kids to ski racing each winter. The program took flight in 1999 and has served about 100 kids each season since then. Mann sees it as an opportunity to open children’s eyes to the beauty of the snow sports. “We wanted Auburn kids to be able to appreciate the beautiful mountains around here,” Mann said. “Skiing’s a wonderful way to stay involved with family. Other sports dwindle as the kids go off to college and go on with their lives. Skiing’s a family affair. They can do it their whole lives.” The Gift of Skiing program serves children from ages 6 to 13. They’re introduced to the basics of skiing before joining the Cisco Kids, the Boreal Bombers or the Bomber Teens, depending on their level of competition. Grants from the Auburn Ski Club help defray the cost of the program for families that normally would not be able to afford it. Mann is responsible for working with parents to get children enrolled in the program and making sure things run smoothly

The 17-acre Machado pear and plum orchard was first purchased in 1927 by Joe and Constance Machado, immigrants from the Azore Island off of Portugal. After a disease killed off nearly all the pear trees in Placer County, son Gil and his wife Bobbi replanted the orchard with apples, later adding peaches, plums, and nectarines. In 1978, son Gary purchased his own orchard on adjoining property and more apples and peaches were added to the family land. Gary’s pie shop opened in 1982, using Bobbi’s own pie recipes. These days, the family business has expanded to include fresh apple juice made on site, caramel apples, apple sauce, jams and jellies, pickled veggies, sauces, and a full produce market. “We try to get as much of our produce locally as we can,” said Bobbi. The famous Granny-ola mix comes from the grandmother of one of Bobbi’s own Placer High classmates. The Machado apple orchard is the largest in Placer County, and supplies the apples for all their apple pies. The pie shop fare changes seasonally, beginning with cherry, apricot, and various berries, then going through peach, plum, apple, and finally pumpkin, using only fresh, locally-grown fruit. Also on the list are coconut cream, banana cream, and chocolate cream pies. Machado’s also carries sugar-free pies and diabetic gift packs, and Christmas gift packs during the holiday season.

Machado Orchards

Bobbi has turned over the reins to Gary’s wife Shawnie, and the couple have taken over running the business while Bobbi travels. “Shawnie is an excellent addition to Machado’s, and she has done really well giving the school tours.”

Working to make Auburn a better place BY GUS THOMSON GOLD COUNTRY MEDIA

argaret Heiser Fulton, an Auburn lawyer in estate planning, living trusts, probate and conservertorships, likes to give back to the community both through her work and in her spare time. Fulton is certified by the state bar in estate planning – one of only a handful in the county. The work provides her with the opportunity to help families surmount complicated estate law and tax code hurdles. “The most common estate planning method is the do nothing method,” Fulton said. “But people need to ensure that the proper people inherit their assets at their death to avoid an expensive and time-consuming probate process and minimize estate taxes.” An Auburn resident since 1995, Fulton has

I would say the biggest challenge in today’s real estate market is dealing with the banks. Mother-daughter duo driving for teen safety EZ Way Driving School a long-time family-run business BY JENIFER GEE GOLD COUNTRY MEDIA

aurine Johnson and Shelley Collins want to put the brakes on the increasing number of teen driving accidents. The mother-daughter duo own and operate EZ Way Driving School in Auburn. The learn-to-drive business has been in town for 20 years and Johnson and Collins want to continue offering their education-based program to the community. “We’re trying to put safe, competent teen drivers on the roads we all share,” said Collins, who is the operator for the business. Collins and Johnson said the family business works hard to maintain a business in difficult economic times while also trying to meet the needs of drivers-to-be. “Many teens need to learn to drive because they need employment to help the family,” Collins said. “It’s a challenge for us to keep our business going and still offer quality instruction at a fair price.” Since its beginning, EZ Way has been a family-run business. Johnson’s husband started the business in 1984. She took over the reigns when he passed away in 2002. “They say husbands and wives can’t work together but my husband and I worked really well together,” Johnson said. One of Collins’ daughters and Johnson’s son also work for the business. A family-oriented business has been helpful for both Johnson and Collins as they juggle life’s unexpected moments.

Shelley Collins, left, and Laurine Johnson, operate and own, respectively, EZ Way Driving School in Auburn. The mother-daughter duo says they work hard to teach teens safe driving techniques. It has made it easier for Collins to maintain a career and still make it to important events in her four daughters’ lives. Recently, Johnson has relied on her family, which is also her staff, to help her cope with the loss of her home in the 49 Fire. “It truly is a family-run business,” Collins said.
