Rip her to shreds Women should join forces to help each other accomplish life goals e have quite an array of role models as women these days. For every Condoleezza, Oprah and Couric we have a Jessica, Paris and Britney. Some might think the latter threesome (Simpson, Hilton and Spears) mark a plunging low for women, but I see them as indicative that us ladies really can be anything we want these days. We can hold the highest offices of power and influence, yet we can also Women in revel in the frivolity of being Business a woman. But it seems if a woman is in the spotlight, we must pass judgment. Look no further that this year’s presidential election to see how women are torn down by our popular culture. When Sen. Hillary Clinton was still jockeying for the Democratic nomination, she

was vilified as cold, ambitious and relentless in her quest for the presidency, even when she was mathematically ruled out as a candidate. She was also thought of as — gasp — man-like. After Sarah Palin had her coming out soiree at the Republican National Convention, some criticized her for aiming for the White House when she gave birth to a child a few months earlier. Would she be able to be V.P. and a mommy? For all the extra scrutiny we face, women must band together and support the varied paths we are so privileged to choose. The women in these pages are indicative of all the different kinds of women we can be. From the Realtor who helps other women find their dream home, to the woman who kicks butt as a martial arts instructor. We can be tough. We can be pretty. We can be smart. We can make mistakes. We are women — and we mean business.

Planning sews success for Henderson Cabin Fever Quilt Shoppe owner is Woman of the Year By Jenna Nielsen Women in Business

atti Henderson knows quilts. And though her personality is as colorful as some of the intricate patterns and designs she sews, Henderson is all about business — when she has to be. “I’m a planner,” Henderson said. “It’s never just good enough. We are the sprinkles and cherries and top. Anyone can bake a cake and put frosting on it. We are over the top and make it really fancy. We go above and beyond.” Henderson, owner of Cabin Fever Quilt Shoppe in Downtown Auburn, is this year’s Women in Business Woman of the Year. Henderson started her business more than six years ago, after she retired from working as a project manager for the state of California for 27 years. After years of commuting to Sacramento from her home in Meadow Vista, she and her husband decided to start something local. “The quilt shop seemed like a natural progression for me,” Henderson said. “I retired fairly young — at 50 — and quilting is something I have always done. Since I was a kid I would make my own clothes.” In the early ’90s, Henderson joined the local quilting guild and

got more into creative sewing. “I knew the community was in need of a quilt shop and a fabric shop that would provide for

them and be a place of education,” Henderson said. “We loved the space here in Downtown and once we found it, everything just snow-

balled. I retired and the next month we were open.” At the quilt shop, the staff of 10 instructors and Henderson offer

courses on a variety of quilting and sewing techniques including cutting, piecing, piercing, binding and more. “A lot of our success

is due to our staff,” Henderson said. “We all agree that our philosophy is centered around service. How do we provide the best possible community service we can?” Last year, Cabin Fever was recognized as one of the top 10 quilt shops in the nation by Better Homes and Gardens. “It was one of our goals,” Henderson said. “Ninety-five percent of what you do is plan, the other small percentage is execution.” Henderson has also worked with the Downtown Business Association to encourage shopping in Auburn. Earlier this year, she helped organize a quilt show Downtown. More than 20 businesses participated and hung quilts in local shops. “We are always trying to do something different,” she said. “People said they visited shops in Downtown that they never knew were there.” Tracey Wright has worked with Henderson for the past four years and previously worked with her in the local quilting guild. “Patti is a really positive person and she deserves this for a lot of reasons,” Wright said. “She always has energy and she is always forward thinking. I don’t think she sleeps — she is always thinking of new stuff to do while delegating and getting other people’s ideas. She trusts others to do their part and she energizes us, but at the same time doesn’t allow anyone to take advantage of her.”

Taking care of the Clubhouse She makes after-school enrichment a lot of fun By Loryll Nicolaisen Women in Business

ackie Pischke can take an idea and run with it. This is an important skill to have when, as the unit director of the Boys & Girls Club Downtown Clubhouse, you’re in charge of creating an enriching, entertaining afterschool program for anywhere from 90 to 95 kids, five days a week. Fostering the youth ages 618 who frequent the Downtown Clubhouse takes a versatile skill set that includes everything from enforcing “power hour,” a mandatory homework and study hour, to playing a mean game of freeze tag. And Pischke, 25, has got it. “Jackie is just a wonderful asset,” said Jana Iverson, Boys & Girls Club of Auburn director of programs and training. Pischke started working at the Downtown Clubhouse as an intern in April, was hired on to the staff as a youth development specialist in May, and stepped up to her current position in August. Iverson said Pischke was one of some 60 applicants interested in the job. “I’m responsible for pretty much all the kids,” Pischke said. “I’m responsible for getting the members to the club, and making them want to stay.” Pischke, who originates from Pacific Palisades, moved up to Placer County three years ago after attending culinary school in Santa Barbara. She lives in Roseville and is currently working toward a bachelor of sciences in human services at University of Phoenix. Whether teaching or by other means, Pischke said she wants to work with kids. “I think that any way we

“You’ve been sent to the principal’s Office!” Boy! If I were a kid, THIS is the principal’s office where I would want to be sent! When you walk in, there waits Mira Wordelman, with a warm smile and an understanding gleam in her eye. Mira is a native of Chicago – a town she remembers fondly as being family oriented. She earned a BS in Finance at Northern Illinois University, and began a ten-year career in banking in Chicago. Eventually she made her way out West where she was the Compliance Officer at Sacramento Savings Bank. When the bank was sold, Mira had a change of heart (and careers) and decided to return to school to earn her teaching credentials. She knew she made the right choice when upon completion of her student teaching, a seventh grade homeroom teacher position became available at St. Joseph Catholic School. Mira and her family had been parishioners here since 1989 and she knew this was where she wanted to be. Mira and her husband Gary have four children – Danielle 17, Michael 15, David 10 and Madelyn 9. When you speak with Mira, it’s clear that her strong faith and family values carry over into her career. She is implementing several new programs at the school such as the Religion Decathlon (for the 5th & 6th graders), the Academic Decathlon and a program geared to challenging students in math. This year Mira is working with the parishes of St. Teresa of Avila and St. Joseph to help bring more students to our school who would otherwise not have the financial means to attend. If you would like to know more about St. Joseph Catholic School and all it has to offer, please contact Mira for an appointment and campus tour. Mira also stands firmly behind the extensive sports program at St Joseph’s which includes both girls and boys flag football, volleyball, basketball, track and golf. Mira believes in forming partnerships with parents to help the students grow spiritually, intellectually, emotionally and physically which is helping to build a stronger community for everyone!

Stacy Pedersen

Service Manager Managing Partner

I hired Stacy Pedersen in August 1996 as office help/support for my fast growing auto specialty shop. Although her first assigned duties were rather simple, she was constantly asking for more assignments, all of which were always completed with amazing energy. Shortly after her first anniversary I was at the point of needing another service advisor. After talking with Stacy about the position, I asked if she was interested. Her answer being what I had expected, her old position was filled the following week and she was off and running. The thing that makes Stacy so special is that she does a job that is primarily a position that men hold in the automotive business. A person who advises you on repair and maintenance of your automotive transportation is almost always a male. Although there are always women in various positions in automotive repair shops and in dealerships, you’ll be hard pressed to find one in a service advisor/manager position. Stacy’s daily routine consists of scheduling customer appointments into the computer, receiving customers, consulting with technicians on needed repairs, constructing repair options with parts and labor estimates, consulting with owners about repair options, ordering needed parts, quality control of completed work, and finally delivering the completed automobile to the customer. Not only has Stacy become a Certified ASE Service Consultant, she has been able to fill the shoes in a position that usually is a man’s job, she has also obtained the respect of my male customer base who now don’t question her judgment on recommended repairs or maintenance. Stacy has also been well received by my female customer base by being able to explain needed repairs to them in a way they understand. Besides excelling in her job, Stacy is very active in community service. She was Co-chair and eventually Chairman of the American Cancer Society Auburn Relay for Life. The years she wasn’t running the Relay, she was the manager of our Relay for Life team “Wrenching For A Cure”. Stacy is also an active member in Auburn’s Daybreak Rotary Club. This community service club is very active in our community with projects that include supporting children, seniors, Project Auburn, projects for funds for our local hospital, and many more. Stacy’s latest accomplishment has been not only to become my Service Manager, but also to become a Managing Partner. Someday she will have total control of daily operations of this business. Stacy has accomplished MORE than just being a Woman In Business, she has become accepted in a “guy’s” job and doing not only a great job but a fantastic job! ~ Jimmy Mullenix, President/CEO

I have recently decided to do so in order to grow my businesss and to develop a larger network of attorneys and legal assistants in the area I live, Placer County, and the many contiguous surrounding counties. This has led to the creation of my website and I am very excited about it! A little information about me: I have lived in Auburn in the same home for 19 years and have been an independent freelance court reporter for 23 years. I have been married for 20 years to Keith, my best friend of 25 years. Keith is an estimator for Teichert Construction, Lincoln District. REAL ESTATE & HOLLYWOOD? Sandy Schweiger is not your everyday Realtor. She doesn’t subscribe to conventional real estate thinking but prefers to approach the sale or purchase of your home much like the production of a movie. For example, consider that there is always a director (that’s you, the client), and a producer (that’s Sandy, your Realtor). This is essential so things don’t get bogged down, and results meet your expectations. Sandy knows that sometimes selling/buying a home is a love story, sometimes it’s a drama, and regrettably, sometimes it’s a tragedy. You see, in addition to her career in real estate, Sandy is experienced in the film industry, and presently functions as a successful locations manager for Placer County Film Industry. Her calm, no-nonsense approach to complex realty issues, along with her passion for detail, provides a buying/selling experience truly unique in real estate. As a locations manager, Sandy finds homes that have interesting or unusual filming qualities and advertises them to production companies as possible locations. Your kid’s tree house or your exotic garden might be just such a location. Sandy has helped organize all kinds of filming, from simple photo shoots to full feature-films. What this means for Sandy’s listings is exposure to an entirely new and un-tapped market. She may call you with a client (generally a film director) that needs your home for a shoot. Compensation for such use can vary widely, but is commonly in the range of $400-$1,000. And it can be much more: She recently acquired $6,000 for a couple struggling with their mortgage. They also enjoyed front-row seats to the filming process! Sandy includes all her listings on her film website, putting your home in front of Producers and Directors who have also proven to show an interest in her listings! Sandy loves all kinds of homes and has put together a team of photographers and agents dedicated to satisfying her clients needs, whether buying, selling, or just listing their home on her Locations website. Sandy hopes you’ll be the next director she works for.

Tax expert stays on track with change Marcia Bice sees evolving role for women in workplace By Gus Thomson Women in Business

arcia Bice of Newcastle’s Tax Solutions has seen a change in woman and finances over the past quarter century of doing business in the foothills, particularly in the past decade. “In the last 10 years, I’ve seen more proactive rather than reactive women,” Bice said. That shift toward selfdependence and looking toward the future more realistically has partly been shaped by the past (more women getting higher education and in the work force) and the future (women generally outlive their husbands), she said. For Bice that change in attitude has resulted in her own business’s move to help customers in that proactive direction. With a foundation as a tax advisor, Bice has branched out into planning for people’s financial future, particularly long-term care insurance. “It’s about knowing when you get to retirement that you know how to pay for it,” Bice said. As a working mother of three, Bice said that it’s easy to relate to other women faced with adjusting to everything else happening in their lives

Twenty-five years after establishing her own business, she’s seeing more women business owners — particularly those who can establish a venture without a storefront, using e-mails, Web sites and cell phones to create a presence in the marketplace from a home office. That’s meant more women working who have chosen a

Bice, whose office is comfortably nestled in a small plaza near Interstate 80, has found her own niche in a community that she has embraced. She and husband Doug, who works for the Small Business Administration, have three sons, ages 23 to 12. Bice said she initially moved to the area because of the proximity
