A specialty of the town of Steyr are the Old-timer Steyr 380q (mid 1950s model) and Steyr 480a post buses, which again this year will bring guests from Steyr to Christkindl, Garsten and Gleink. The travelling time in each case is 15 minutes. The chauffeurs, wearing traditional uniforms, will cancel your tickets with ticket punchers that are highly sought after collectors’ items. Both on arrival and departure the famous three tone bugle will sound. At the bus stop Town square/Marienkirche there is a letter box. Letters posted here will be forwarded via the Christkindl post office.

Christkindl pilgrimage church In 1695 the seriously ill tower watchman and bandmaster Ferdinand Sertl placed a small wax figure of the Christ child into the hollow of a fir tree. Several times a week he returned to the place to pray. After he was cured of epilepsy, the place attracted so many pilgrims that it became necessary to build a church. It was given the name ”To the Christ child below the heavens”. The construction of the church was begun by Giovanni Battista Carlone in 1702. It was finished by Jakob Prandtauer between 1708 and 1725. The miracle-working figure is only a 10 cm tall standing wax figure of the Christ child holding a cross and a crown of thorns in its hands and is now housed in a little reliquary on the high altar above the globe-shaped tabernacle.

Steyr nativity scene in the Innerberger Stadl
The Steyr nativity scene is one of the last stick puppet theatres still performing in the German language area. Since about 1850 two touring nativity scenes with numerous figures have travelled through the Steyr area performing theatre plays at inns. These two nativity scenes are thought to have merged later into the Steyr nativity scene. On the lower stage, which shows the Bethlehem stable, religious scenes are performed. On the central stage the stalls of craftsmen and traders are set up. The upper stage depicts the Christmas town Steyr in the Biedermeier period and is the setting for worldly happenings. Duration approx. 1 hour / in Steyr dialect Main programme:

Lamberg nativity figures in the Steyr Town Museum The puppets from Count Lamberg’s collection were created between the baroque and Biedermeier periods. More than 200 of these figures have been set out on a large mountain. Adorned with gold and silver embroideries, the luxurious clothing of some of these figures recalls the handi-craft of convents. Most of these figures are thought to have once belonged to the churches’ grand nativity scenes.
Opening hours see Bethlehem nativity scene
3b Bethlehem nativity scene in the Steyr Town Museum
Steyr was given this nativity scene in 2001 upon the conclusion of its town partnership with Bethlehem. It is one of the largest representations ever carved from olive wood in Bethlehem. The stable alone weighs approx. 170 kg, the figures between 5-10 kg.
A replica of the star of Bethlehem, the original of which is found in the birth church of Bethlehem, was also a present from our partner town. The star symbolically recalls the birth of Jesus Christ.

Nativity tree
in the Town square
Nativity scene trees and wooden board nativity scenes have a long tradition dating back to the early baroque period and were primarily found near monasteries, such as the Jesuit Monastery in Steyr and Benedictine Monastery in Garsten. Every year, a nativity scene tree that presents the story of Christmas in a very special way, is put up in the Steyr Stadtplatz square. The Steyr nativity scene tree was created by the nativity scene maker Josef Seidl with the assistance of the nativity scene friends from Vorarlberg (1993/94).

Art and handicraft in the
Lamberg castle
For the 21st time this year, the Christmas exhibition in the Lamberg Castle in Steyr will enchant visitors with its exclusive and peaceful atmosphere amidst beautiful arts and crafts products. At this most beautiful time of year, its magical flair will awaken the true Christmas spirit and be remembered for a long time to come.
The goods offered for sale at this exclusive Christmas exhibition range from artistic Christmas decorations, wrought iron art, choice leatherware, elaborately painted ceramics and porcelain to extravagant hats, designer jewellery, box and carton nativity scenes. However, it is not only because of this wide variety of handicraft works that the Christmas exhibition in the Lamberg castle stands out among the other Advent markets. The lovely decorated booths of the approx. 30 artists also ensure that the exhibition in the castle gallery will be an unique experience. Most of the artists have received sound training e.g. at Secondary Technical Schools, technical colleges or art colleges.
