FROM THE PRESIDENT I would like to give a big thanks to Jennifer Kettleson, who is leaving the Achievement Night committee, along with Mike, Brittani and Baillie for their years of making Achievement Night a special night of the year. The bar is set high for the next committee chairperson. I also want to thank Julie Siefert and Laura Steidl for making the awards and recognition of achievement a special part of the evening. Because of your hard work a wonderful time is always the order of the evening. Achievement Night is when we recognize our club members that

have worked hard through out the year to accomplish different titles with their dogs. We saw many new titles and lots of certificates given for those working on titles, or in other areas that are not considered an AKC title. But this isn’t the only reason to attend the dinner. It is a fun time to get out and meet with other club members and socialize (without the dogs). Every club member is invited to attend and hopefully next year we will see more of you there. Thank you all who came to the dinner to make it a very enjoyable evening. We are looking forward to having an even bigger turn out next year.

January’s board meeting minutes were read. Treasurers Report: January’s financial report was given Presidents Report: Don thanked everyone that helped at the Winter Show. With out the help from the membership the show wouldn’t be the success it was. Don will pass the list onto Anne Schmidt who will schedule a time for this. Membership: Prospective new members were introduced and welcomed. Canine First Aid: Barb Wildhagen sent around a sign up sheet for those interested in taking this class. It will be held on February 24 from 6 to 9 PM. The cost will be $25 for WDC members and $35 for non-members and the cost will include a book and DVD. Old Business: None New Business: Don said that with a new year upon us that a new decal will have to be obtained to put on your vehicle to use our dog yards. The decals may be obtained from Linda Allen. They are to be put in the rear window on the driver’s side. Don also mentioned that with the weather being like it has been you might be interested in renting our building for $5 an hour and your dog/s can get some of the needed exercise and/or training where it would be much nicer. If interested give him a call to find out if the building is available. page 2

workers need to be fed. If you can lend a hand contact me or either one of them. Gate: WE NEED THIS FILLED!!!!!!!!!!!!! We have the second day of a two day weekend, so won’t be as busy as our Winter Show is. But we need people available to sell catalogs and collect from people coming in for one day. If interested please contact Gail VanDenLangenberg at [email protected] or 920-7252047. Clean-Up after the show. It is a really important after the show to get the site back to its normal condition and many hands are welcomed to help. Everyone wants to get home after a long day, including me, so helping hands are always welcome. This is a very important part of the show because we don’t want to lose the site because it’s not done right. We are always looking for suggestions on people to hire for our judging panel. We want to hire judges that we feel will pull a nice entry. The hiring of judges is dependent on many factors including on how many breeds they can judge, where they are from etc. Please contact me if you have suggestions.

CANINE GOOD CITIZEN TEST SPONSORED BY WINNEGAMIE DOG CLUB, INC. HELD AT THE TRAINING CENTER

Saturday, April 18, 2009 9:00 AM – Noon

Entry Fee: $10.00 (To be paid on day of test – no pre-entry) The purpose of the Canine good Citizen Test is to ensure that our favorite companion, the dog, can be a respected member of the community because it is trained and conditioned to act mannerly in the home, in public places and in the presence of other dogs. The program embraces both purebred and mixed-breed dogs, as the anti-canine sentiment does not discriminate between the purebred and the non-purebred. Canine Good Citizen training is fun and useful. Through it, you and your dog will establish a closer bond and your dog will have the added benefit of knowing how to please you. This test of your dog’s manners and training is not a competition and does not require that you and your dog perform with precision. The Canine Good Citizen program is based on the concept that all dogs should have enough basic training to be under control at home and in public. The American Kennel club urges all dog owners to participate in this program, thereby assuring that our beloved dogs will always be welcomed and respected members of the community. All dogs who pass the ten items on the CGC test earn a certificate from the AKC.

Dogs should wear well-fitting buckle or slip collars made of either leather, fabric or chain. Special training collars, such as pinch collars or Gentle Leaders, are not allowed.

DEMONSTRATING CONFIDENCE AND CONTROL, THE DOG AND HANDLER MUST COMPLETE THESE 10 STEPS. TEST EXCERCISES 1. Accepting a friendly stranger 2. Sitting politely for petting 3. Appearance and grooming 4. Out for a walk (walking on a loose leash) 5. Walking through a crowd 6. Sit and down on command/ staying in place 7. Coming when called 8. Reaction to another dog 9. Reaction to distractions 10. Supervised separation For more details on individual exercises, visit http://www.akc.org/events/cgc/training_testing.cfm

PLAQUES Congratulations to all of our club members who submitted earned AKC titles for the 2008 year. Club members and their dogs earned titles in the following areas: agility, obedience, rally, conformation, earthdog, hunting, tracking, utility and one dog and owner handler combination earned a Versatile Companion Dog title. Nice work WDC members!!! In addition, all seven groups were represented in the titles earned. As a reminder, the plaques awarded by WDC to its members and their dogs are perpetual plaques. So if your dog earns additional AKC titles in the years to come, the plaque from this year will need to be submitted for the addition of earned titles. It is recommended that you keep your protective sleeve to resubmit your plaque for all of the additional titles you and your dog will earn. Any dogs earning their first titles in 2009 will receive a plaque initiating their perpetual title plaque. Instructions will be included when the award information is posted in the newsletter. Keep up the good work earning those titles. It is my pleasure to be able to organize the awards process for WDC.

THE WDC CAR DECALS FOR 2009 ARE READY! To use the front or back fenced in yards, at the club, you need to obtain a new 2009 car decal. They are different from last years. Everyone may have two decals free. You may obtain extra decals for $1.00. Place the decal on the Driver’s side, rear window. If you bike or walk to the club, then carry the decal on you. If at any time your decal is damaged or stolen, please let me know and you can get a replacement decal for a fee of $1.00. If you get a new license plate number, you will need to get a new decal.
