MEMBERSHIP MEETING MARCH 5, 2009 Meeting was called to order Secretary’s Report: February’s membership meeting minutes were approved as published in the newsletter. February’s board minutes were read. Treasurers Report: February’s financial report was given. Presidents Report: Winter ShowDon said that he has been talking with Mary Parszewski and she said they are waiting on a couple of bills to come in yet. We should be making around $4500 for each club-OKC & WDC from the show weekend.. Don also sent around a clipboard if anyone would be interested in signing up to learn more about ring stewarding for conformation. Anne Schmidt would run a class if enough people are interested. Membership books are ready. When you take one be sure and take a label from the packet of them made up so Dick knows who had taken a book. Don said that he would like to see a committee formed of people interested in coming up with some new ideas for raising money for the club. If anyone is interested in earning some “hours” he has a project that he would like to see done. The bathroom floors need to be painted and if interested in helping with this to please contact him. Membership: Prospective new members were introduced and welcomed. CGC: Jolene Johnson said that she would like about 20 people to volunteer to help with this test. It is an easy way to earn 4 hours and can be lots of fun. The test will be on April 18th from 9 until noon. If helping for this she would need to have you there by 8:30. CANINE GOOD CITIZEN TEST SPONSORED BY WINNEGAMIE DOG CLUB, INC. HELD AT THE TRAINING CENTER

Saturday, April 18, 2009 9:00 AM – Noon

Entry Fee: $10.00 (To be paid on day of test – no pre-entry) The purpose of the Canine good Citizen Test is to ensure that our favorite companion, the dog, can be a respected member of the community because it is trained and conditioned to act mannerly in the home, in public places and in the presence of other dogs. The program embraces both purebred and mixed-breed dogs, as the anti-canine sentiment does not discriminate between the purebred and the non-purebred. Canine Good Citizen training is fun and useful. Through it, you and your dog will establish a closer bond and your dog will have the added benefit of knowing how to please you. This test of your dog’s manners and training is not a competition and does not require that you and your dog perform with precision. The Canine Good Citizen program is based on the concept that all dogs should have enough basic training to be under control at home and in public. The American Kennel club urges all dog owners to participate in this program, thereby assuring that our beloved dogs will always be welcomed and respected members of the community. All dogs who pass the ten items on the CGC test earn a certificate from the AKC.

Dogs should wear well-fitting buckle or slip collars made of either leather, fabric or chain. Special training collars, such as pinch collars or Gentle Leaders, are not allowed.

DEMONSTRATING CONFIDENCE AND CONTROL, THE DOG AND HANDLER MUST COMPLETE THESE 10 STEPS. TEST EXCERCISES 1. Accepting a friendly stranger 2. Sitting politely for petting 3. Appearance and grooming 4. Out for a walk (walking on a loose leash) 5. Walking through a crowd 6. Sit and down on command/ staying in place 7. Coming when called 8. Reaction to another dog 9. Reaction to distractions 10. Supervised separation For more details on individual exercises, visit http://www.akc.org/events/cgc/training_testing.cfm

CANINE EXERCISE The importance of exercise in our lives is undeniable and really cannot be understated. This is no less true for our canine companions, too. Leading experts recommend an hour or more of exercise every day for our four-legged best friends. Of course, the duration depends on several factors, including breed, size, age and state of health. So what should be your guide in determining how much exercise they should have? Let your dog help you decide. Any new exercise routine is a discovery process. Pay close attention to any potential signs of early fatigue, like panting or slowing down. Environmental factors, like excessive heat or cold, should definitely influence the duration of outdoor activities on any given day. If you’re planning a hike or some other kind of day trip, be sure to bring along plenty of water for your dog, and provide several opportunities to drink. Additionally, pay attention to your own feelings about exercise periods – in you feel like you’re spending too much time on an activity, and you become anxious about other items on your to-do list, your pet may not enjoy the time (and you might be less likely to commit to further activities in the future). Exercising with your dog is an important opportunity for you to bond with your companion, so make sure it’s fun for both of you

THE WDC CAR DECALS FOR 2009 ARE READY! To use the front or back fenced in yards, at the club, you need to obtain a new 2009 car decal. They are different from last years. Everyone may have two decals free. You may obtain extra decals for $1.00. Place the decal on the Driver’s side, rear window. If you bike or walk to the club, then carry the decal on you. If at any time your decal is damaged or stolen, please let me know and you can get a replacement decal for a fee of $1.00. If you get a new license plate number, you will need to get a new decal. The decals will be changing yearly. All club members are to have decals by September1st. We need all of your help. Please, look at the cars of the people using the fenced yards. If someone is using the yards and they don’t have a decal, please say something to them. If they are not members, tell them how they can become a member and that the yards are for MEMBERS ONLY. If someone is abusing the posted rules, write the car plates down, with the complaint, and give to any board member or myself. Please give feedback on how you think this is working, any concerns you may have, or suggestions for improvement to any of the board members or myself.
