Welcome in the High Holy Days with a special reading of the play Gates are Closing by Merle Feld on Saturday, September 12th at 8 PM.

Rabbi’s Message

Meeting the New Archbishop The new Archbishop. . . This past June I had the opportunity to meet personally with the new Archbishop of New York, His Excellency, The Most Reverend Timothy Michael Dolan, in his Madison Avenue residence. I was there in my capacity as one of the vice presidents of the New York Board of Rabbis, along with six of my colleagues, who also serve as officers of the NYBR. We had requested the meeting to extend a hand of welcome to the new Archbishop from the Jewish community, and to begin a new era of dialogue and good will.

A good conversation. . . Archbishop Dolan greeted us most cordially, and we found him to be warm and friendly, and quite down to earth; in short, just a really nice man. There was an unspoken understanding among us that there were certain topics that we would not broach: reproductive choice, same sex marriage, and the like - topics that obviously would not have been helpful to raise in this type of introductory, informal meeting. Instead, Archbishop Dolan was extremely interested in floating ideas about areas of common interest, where we could work together as partners in the religious community of our city: poverty, hunger, joblessness, far-reaching effects of the economic crisis, bigotry, drugs, how to reach young people, and the like. While we didn’t put into place any concrete programs, that was not the purpose or goal of our meeting. We established a friendly tone, and left feeling extremely encouraged, certain that there is every reason to expect a fruitful partnership with this man and his following. A reception of welcome. . . While obviously there are profound differences between ourselves and the Church, as New Yorkers of faith we are concerned about working together for the greater good. In this spirit, I would bring to your attention an event that the New York Board of Rabbis is hosting, and which you are most cordially invited to attend. It is a ceremony and reception to officially welcome Archbishop Dolan to the community, and there will be a special tribute as well to His Eminence, Edward Cardinal Egan. In addition, there will be prayers of remembrance of the tragedy that struck our city on 9/11. The ceremony will take place on Thursday, September 10th, at the Park Avenue Synagogue, 50 East 87th Street (between Park and Madison). The doors will open at 4:30 PM and the program will begin at 5:30 PM, with a collation to follow. As you can imagine, security will be extremely tight. If you would like to attend, I would ask that you please let me know ASAP so that I can submit your name to the security list. A wish from the Goodmans. . . . In the meantime, as we prepare to enter our High Holy Day season, it is my hope for all of us that we will use these Days of Awe well in trying to work toward resolving the conflicts in our lives, and in repairing the damages in our relationships with the people in our lives, in the true spirit of teshuvah, repentance. In that spirit, Stephen and Philip join me in wishing all of you a Shanah Tovah, Uv’riah, Um’tukah - a happy, healthy, and sweet New Year. May 5770 bring peace and healing to all of us, to our People, and to all who dwell on Earth. Rabbi Linda Henry Goodman

Suddenly summer is over and we're deep into preparations for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Sisterhood hopes that you had a happy, eventful summer, and that you have returned rested and ready to join us in an exciting new season. We have many stimulating programs planned, beginning on Sunday, October 18th, at 10 AM, when we'll be welcoming you back with a warm and friendly Rosh Chodesh Seder. We'll be discussing the novel The Septembers of Shiraz by Dalia Sofer. It's the moving, inspiring story of a JewishIranian family caught up in the terror that reigned after the revolution. Even if you don't have a chance to read the book, you won't want to miss what promises to be a provocative discussion.

If you have not yet renewed your membership, please do so promptly, and if you are not yet a Sisterhood member, we hope you will join us now. It's as simple as writing a check for $36 to Sisterhood of Union Temple. Think about it—for only double chai you can perform the mitzvah of bringing hope and help where they are needed by adding your voice, your heart, and your hands to ours, as together we reach out to perform tikkun olam.
