Brotherhood

Defiance!

On February 8th, the Brotherhood is pleased to present Josh Waletzky, who will show and discuss his film Partisans of Vilna. We are especially looking forward to this, after several Brotherhood members got together to watch the film Defiance in January. For too long, it was generally believed that the Jews in Nazi-controlled parts of Europe went meekly to their fate, with only a small handful of uprisings. At last, we are learning of brave resistance actions throughout Europe, and not a mere handful, but numbering at

least in the hundreds. We thank Andy Mirer for making the arrangements for Partisans of Vilna. The Brotherhood Shabbat service and luncheon will be on March 14th. Erez Mirer and I will each be chanting part of the Torah reading, Ki Tissa (the Golden Calf), so we hope that you all can attend. Our next Brotherhood book discussion, on April 26th, will be about Edward Kritzler’s new book Jewish Pirates of the Caribbean. Come and hear about this amazing and little known part of our history. -Steve Segall, Brotherhood President

Religious School

The Purim Carnival is a Union Temple tradition with games, food, prizes and Purim spiels. Any parent or community member who would like to offer assistance would be much appreciated.

Dear Union Temple Community

The Time Capsule Project is a creative effort to help the children decide upon and create materials that they would like to include in our Temple Time Capsule. Our students with the guidance of teachers and interested community members will create photographs, drawings, articles and reflections.

Plant Yourself at Religious School

The Religious School teachers and I are planning for several school wide events in the coming months and I’m inviting all parents and community members to consider choosing an event that you are interested in and joining in the planning process. The upcoming events are the Tu B’Shevat Seder on February 8, the Purim Carnival on March 8th, the Time Capsule Project in honor of the Temple’s 160th Anniversary, and the Mitzvah Day Oral History Project. The Tu B’Shevat Seder is a celebration of the New Year for the Trees. According to the Talmud there are four different types of New Years, and the 15th of the month of Shevat is the New Year dedicated to the trees. Tu B’Shevat marks the beginning of spring in Israel and is a time of renewal and connection to nature. The Tu B’Shevat Seder we will be celebrating was designed using kabbalistic principles and helps us to connect more fully to the worlds of assiyah, yetzirah, briyah, and atzilut (action, emotion, thought, and spirit). This year with Israel on our minds we will make a special effort to connect the holiday to the current situation in Israel.

The Social Action Committee suggested the Mitzvah Day Oral History Project. The purpose of this project is multifold. Students will develop questions and work on their interviewing skills prior to meeting elders of our community. The information they gather will be included in a Bulletin article and may also be included in the Time Capsule. Later in the spring, students will visit a local senior residence and visit with and interview residents. I am hoping that many parents and community members will volunteer to help with these projects. Please contact me at [email protected] if you are interested in becoming involved. Wishes for a Happy and Healthy New Year, -Ann Landowne, Principal
