This program was organized by the Seahawk Village Area Chapter and was designed to address uncommonly discussed issues that effect college students today. Each day presented a different topic. In the Know Week started off with a bang with the “Active Shooter” program presented by UNCW’s PAC'N Police Officer, Rebecca Stevens. Throughout the program, Officer Stevens explained how to react if an active shooter invades UNCW’s campus or enters an occupied classroom. In addition to the information, Officer Stevens also gave “real life” scenarios which prompted the audience to come up with safe and efficient solutions to getting out alive. Tuesday night’s program addressed a well known, but rarely discussed issue of alcohol poisoning. This program sought to provide residents with the information needed to help a friend who they suspect maybe suffering from alcohol poisoning and encourage them to seek help. UNCW Crossroads Peer Educators came and spoke with the attendees about alcohol and other drugs and answered questions presented by the audience. Throughout the program, attendees helped themselves to a plethora of Strawberry Daiquiri “Mocktails” and non alcoholic cocktails and delicious snacks provided by the Seahawk Village Area Chapter.
In the Know week continued on Wednesday night with the program “Sexual Addiction with Dr. Phil” presented by Dr. Phillip Sharpe of UNCW Counseling Center. Attendees munched on delectable snacks while watching a video on sexual addition. Following the video, Dr, Phil discussed and summarized the contents of the video and opened the floor up for discussion and questions. In the Know week concluded with “Meet the Men of 1 in 4” on Thursday night presented by UNCW CARE and “1 in 4.” The program discussed rape and sexual assault as it pertains to college aged women. The presenters, of the program “1 in 4” were an all male group who speak, address and promote awareness of sexual assault issues particularly in college environments. At the beginning of the program, the presenters explained the name “1 in 4” as based on the statistic “1 in every 4 women has experienced an attempted or completed sexual assault since their 14th birthday.” After watching an eye opening video addressing the gut-wrenching experience of a sexual assault, the presenters concluded with additional information and tips for healthy social interactions. The program originated in the Seahawk Village in the spring of 2009. We wanted to create an educational program for the residents in an upperclassmen-type setting. This included more thought provoking issues, such as the ones presented in this program. For a month, our executive board worked on contacting individuals across campus to educated students on important topics that are up for discussion. These topics are relevant to a college student’s experiences here and elsewhere. Not only did this program promote awareness on said topics, but it also utilized the abilities of various on campus resources and made them accessible to residents. We also wanted to bring out a wide variety of students by offering a variety of programs during the course of the week. It was very schedule friendly. Positive and Lasting Effects of Program: As a result of In the Know Week, the Seahawk Village was able to utilize the abilities of various on campus resources and provide village residents with rare but relevant information. Because this program was a success, the Seahawk Village Area Chapter hopes In the Know Week will become an annual program that is looked forward to by the Village residents every year. We felt that the students that participated took back a great deal of information that they will hopefully share with their friends. We define success by the response from the people in whom we plan, organize and facilitate programs for: the Seahawk Village residents. Based on the amount of positive feedback given to us by those residents, we feel confident in saying that In the Know Week was truly a success. We were able to build connections with a variety of resources on-campus. Now, these students will know the resources available to them if any relevant issues arise where they need to speak with a professional. In the Know Week can be easily adapted to other campuses. First, address and discuss topics that are relevant to your school’s environment. Choose topics that are not commonly talked about but truly ought to be. Next, coordinate with on campus resources that specialize in the study of those topics. Choose a week that is conducive to schedules of the general population (ie. not during midterm week etc) provide plenty of tasty snacks and enjoy the week! Make sure to make reservations with spaces on your campus. If you want to get a larger group, make this a campus-wide event and set-up at various residence halls. Lastly, make sure to advertise creatively! Word count: 112
