Understanding Changes At Puberty Kia Ora Parents / Caregivers For the next 3 weeks, our class will be working on a unit called “Understanding Changes at Puberty” as part of our health programme. The unit aims to help students understand the changes that are taking place during puberty, that these changes are to be expected, and that others are experiencing them too. The class will be learning the proper names to describe parts of the body, gaining a basic understanding of the way these function, and learning that daily care routines are needed to cope with these changes. Finally we will consider how other people influence our feelings about ourselves, and look at ways of dealing with this and other outside pressures – for example, from the media, especially advertising. The objectives for the activities in the unit on which your child will be working are on the next page. This programme recaps all the information covered in the Year 7 programme at Balmacewen Intermediate School. From our experience, with the students 1 year older, this unit becomes more relevant to their needs. Perhaps the most important benefit of this programme is that it provides an opportunity for further discussions at home. Your son / daughter will bring their theme book home after each lesson so you can read and sign the lesson that they have covered.
