hey say that laughter is the best medicine and boy we were treated to a double dosage of laughter at the 2008 Area “ S” Humorous Speech and Evaluation Contest on 27 September 2008. Hosted at Nee East Toastmasters the event saw the humorous of the crop the trio of Seagate TMC, Fuchun TMC and the host club. Pink reigned the day as 5 formidable contestants pit their humorous skills against each other in a bid to tickle the funny bones in the room. Their aim: To beg you to stretch your laugh lines and laugh at them for 3 hours on a Saturday afternoon. And they sure did. Needless to say, the generously hearty laughter from the very receptive audience were turned on effortlessly. Order of the day: Free Flow Of Laughter Representing our dear club ( Nee Soon East) were Kenneth Goh and Lin Yihao. Kenneth “ irritated” us with his tsk-onducing rendition of his most annoying day ever, which included public buses stopped at places faraway from bus stops. The speech ended aptly with an abrupt “ ring tone”.

The latter fondly recall ( albeit painfully) the sheer trauma of going through T.T ( “Totally Terrible”) or more commonly known as Table Topics. Didn’t I heard a sigh, somewhere? The eventual champion, Pragash Karuppiah, who hails from Seagate AMK TMC, brought the house down with his hilarious speech on the “ Massacre of the English Language” while holidaying in Thailand. The land of smiles sure gave Pragash lots to smile about. He told us about the amusing, sometimes crude, Thai-to-English mis-translations.

Kumaran and the big winner

Very Entertaining, indeed and it clearly left the audience in stiches. Congratulations to all winners and contestants for daring to make themselves a target board for laughter. You all have shown that humour is so much more than slap stick, larger-than-life actions ( turn to Jim Carrey or PCK for that). It takes precise timing and concise courage to light up even the most jaded in all of us. Till we laugh again, next year
