With

a bang and a massive round of applase from the audience, the Area S5 International Speech & Table Topics Contest got off to a fiery start. Contestants from the 4 clubs that form up Area S5 - Nee Soon East, Fuchun, Seagate and Motorola Toastmasters Clubs - vied with each other to clinch the ultimate prize - the Gold Trophies for both contests. True to the generous spirit of Fuchun Toastmasters, the Contests were held at Fuchun Community Club. Incidentally (more likely due to ingenious planning), the Toastmaster for the contests was none other than the genial and gracious Mohamad Saddiq, CC, President of Nee Soon East Toastmasters!

The Table Topics Contest commenced soon after everyone had their fair share of the food (some had “fairer” portions compared to the rest!). Since the very idea of the Table Topics Contest is to promote quick thinking and impromptu speaking skills, contestants were not allowed to sit in the room before their turn came up unlike the International Speech Contest.

Congrats to Lawrence & Kenneth for a job well done!

To promote the spirit of competition, all contestants willingly surrended their phones to the Toastmaster (hmmm what’s inside the phone...) and were led out to the holding area by the Sergeant-atArms.

During the table topics contest , It was obvious that the audience enjoyed the impromtu speeches immensely judging from the peals of laughter emanating from them. Kenneth in particular galed everyone with his dramatic and flavourful account of scandalous love triangles in junior college plus the fact that he would rather stay single and enjoy the benefits of living in Mum & Dad Hotel. All good things had to come to an end...with the Awards Presentations Ceremony. Kelvin Thiang came in first for the speech contest. Meanwhile, in a playful mood, the Toastmaster deliberately held back the name of the Table Topics Contest champion. Screams of disbelief came from the man himself as a shocked and utterly taken aback Kenneth Goh staggered to the front to shake the Area Governor’s hand! It was an historical first, with Nee Soon East Toastmasters bagging 2 major awards, Gold and bronze in the speech & Table Topics catogories
