The third edition of World’s Biggest Open Innovation Model – Smart India Hackathon 2019 was launched by the Union Minister for Human Resource Development, Prakash Javadekar in New Delhi. MHRD, AICTE, Persistent Systems and i4c have joined hands to make a hat trick with their highly popular and innovative Smart India Hackathon initiative (SIH). SIH-2019 is a nationwide initiative to provide students a platform to solve some of pressing problems we face in our daily lives, and thus inculcate a culture of product innovation and a mindset of problem solving. History of Smart India Hackathon: The event was initiated by MHRD , AICTE & Persistent Systems to promote the Innovation in the Academic Institutes. The proposal was initiated in the year 2015. The Proposal: The Smart India Hackathon promoted innovation, out-of-the-box thinking in young minds, especially engineering students. It was focused on the problems of social importance as identified by Ministries/Departments of Government of India.

The first Hackathon was organized in 2017:

The problem statements identified by the 29 Ministries/Departments were placed on the MyGov website, inviting students (in groups of 6 students with at least one female student and two mentors) to come forward to send ideas and outlines of a possible solution. Leadership talks were broadcast through Facebook Live session. Orientation and awareness programs were conducted by AICTE and i4C in 26 different cities to motivate students to participate in this event. As many as 7531 entries were received from 2100 colleges.

Institute of Management Studies Ghaziabad initiative: 2 teams of MCA 2016-2019 ( First year 2016) submitted their solutions to the problems. Although they could not make to the Grand Finale but still it gave them a new level of thinking and exposure to the real life problems. They also received Participation certificate from Government of India

Second Edition Smart India Hackathon 2018

Smart India Hackathon 2018 is a digital product development competition involving all Technology institutes in India with a reach to approximately 30 lakh students. The initiative challenges the students to come out with outof-the-box innovative ideas to build smart applications which will help address major real time problems in our country. All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) under the aegis of Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) and in collaboration with i4c, MyGov, Persistent Systems, and RambhauMhalgiPrabodhiniorganized this event across India. With 27 Union Ministries and Departments and 17 State Governments having joined this grand initiative this year, the Hackathon is much bigger than its previous edition. It included 2 sub-editions - Software edition, which is a 36-hr software product development competition. The Hardware edition, involving building of hardware solutions will be held later this year in the month of June. Dr. Anand Deshpande, Chairman and MD, Persistent Systems, Co-chairman, Smart India Hackathon 2018 says, “Smart India Hackathon is an opportunity for students to go beyond their prescribed curriculum by being innovative and enterprising while solving problems of national interest. We hope this platform will help them boost their confidence and motivate them to take on entrepreneurship and other challenges in life.” According to Dr. Abhay Jere, Secretary, Organizing Committee, Smart India Hackathon 2018, “It is a proud moment for us as we not only conceptualized but also executed the Smart India Hackathon to establish the world’s biggest innovation model – an endeavor which other countries may want to further replicate. We have received a phenomenal response for the Hardware edition of SIH 2018 and some of the solutions have great potential for success and prove beneficial for India’s progress. We believe that more than 25 start-ups will take root from this initiative and we look forward to the outcome of the grand finale with a lot of enthusiasm.”

Smart India Hackathon 2018 Highlights: Software Edition – A 36-hour software product development competition was held on 30th and 31st March, 2018. Hardware Edition – A new inclusion, where teams will compete against each other in a 5-day challenge to build hardware-backed solutions held between 18th to 22nd June 2018.

Hardware Edition: S.No. 1.

Problem Statement Smart Irrigation System

Out of 4 teams submitted solution in the SIH 2018 software edition 3 Teams qualified for the software grand finale, whereas Government of Punjab did not participated in the Hardware Grand Finale so our Hardware Team could not reach the Grand Finale but they stood first in the Parikrama event organized by AKTU, lucknow.

Grand Finale Event : The event was organized at around 30 centers AOI. Two teams were allocated CMR Hyderabad and one team was allocated Nagpur center. The event started on 30th March at 8:00 Hrs and ended on 31st March 2018 at 20:00Hrs. The Event was 36 hours involving 5 guidance sessions by experts, 7 regressive evaluation sessions by Corporate and Government experts and elimination at different levels. 12 teams were selected for the final presentation round. The final round was very crucial as the it was just your presentation about how you can present yourself in front of the Corporate sector.

Grand Finale Result: Out of 3 teams qualified for the Grand finale

Team 1: Cyber Spear They stood 5th position at the Hyderabad Centre and was award Persistent Inspiration Award by Persistent Systems Ltd. Pune.

Team 2: ELEGANT CODER Selected Under last 12 Finalists but they were able to grab 2nd prize at Parikrama organized by AKTU, Lucknow

Team 3: Bubbling Minds They could not make it to the Last 12 but their project was personally appreciated by the Delhi Government and they will be approached later for the implementation.

Research Publication: The Students have proved that Smart India Hackathon is just not the limit, Fourth Team (Creative Crew ) which could not be qualify for the software grand finale published their research work in the Conference organized by D N Patel Group of Institutes, Pune

The last edition of the hackathon saw over 5 million+ students from various engineering colleges compete for the top prize at 35+ locations. In SIH 2019, the students would also have the opportunity to work on challenges faced within the private sector organisations and create world class solutions for some of the top companies in the world, thus helping the Private sector hire the best minds from across the nation
