God’s Economy Operates on Grace

II Corinthians 8 describes the sacrificial offering of the povertystricken churches of Macedonia. The testimony of these Macedonian Christians is powerful because of their motive. In God’s economy, the motive is as important as the gift.

Early Christians were not guiltgivers. These Macedonian Christians did not give because Paul pushed or coerced them into giving. In fact, they had to beg Paul to take their gift (II Corinthians 8:4). God never intended giving to hinge on guilt. He doesn’t want you to give because you have to give, but rather because you get to give. Early Christians were not greedgivers. The Macedonian Christians did not give to get. They did not give because they hoped God would reward them with increased finances. Giving is not a game in which we have to try to trick God into increasing our blessings. God delights in blessing us; this is why He has promised to do so.

Early Christians were gracegivers. In Paul’s account of the gift of these Macedonian Christians, he was careful to explain that biblical giving is the result of “the grace of God.” The liberality of these Christian givers was not of themselves, but of God’s grace bestowed on them.

Spiritual givers are motivated by grace; they give in response to God’s work in their hearts. Grace is a disposition created in our hearts by God’s Holy Spirit. Paul described grace in Philippians 2:13: “For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.” Grace is the powerful work of God in a Christian’s heart to make him willing and able to do His will. Nothing short of grace-giving is biblical giving. The grace-giving of the Macedonian Christians was the result of their giving first themselves to the Lord (II Corinthians 8:5). Their financial giving followed as the natural byproduct of this personal commitment.

Missions’ Conference Begins This Saturday Our International Dinner will be served on Saturday, October 24, at 5 PM. After the dinner we will watch a missionary DVD, and be challenged to give to the missionary program of the church.

Discipleship Program Tonight at 6:30 PM

The Discipleship class meets tonight in the Young Couples’ Sunday School classroom. Be sure to bring your workbook with you to these meetings. Be faithful and punctual.

Where Will I Spend Eternity? Your relationship to Jesus Christ is central to the answer to that question. Our Dilemma: We are, by nature, sinners who stand guilty and condemned before our Creator and Judge. In our thoughts and actions, we have disobeyed His perfect standards. We are sinners (Romans 3:10, 23). Our Inability: We are helpless to save ourselves. Forgiveness is a gift to be received, not a reward that can be earned. We need a Saviour (Ephesians 2:8-9). Our Saviour: Because of His love for us, God provided salvation through His Son, Jesus. He became a member of the human family, lived without sin, and died on the cross to pay for our sins. Jesus is the Saviour (Romans 5:8; John 3:16). Our Response: Salvation is an individual matter and requires a personal response on the part of anyone that wants to be saved. All who acknowledge their sin and place their trust in Christ are adopted as God’s children (Romans 10:9, 13).

Missions Is Possible Missionary Conference October 24-25, 2009 Take advantage of the opportunity to meet our missionary and go soul winning from 2:00-3:30 PM. Our International Dinner will be served on Saturday, October 24, at 5 PM. After the dinner we will watch a missionary DVD, and be challenged to give to the missionary program of the church. Each family is asked to bring a side dish, dessert, and 2 liter with them before 5 PM. The church will provide the meats. On Sunday AM, we will collect your Faith Promise Missions pledges.

Take Advantage of Our Free Nurseries

Out of respect for your loved ones and those in attendance, we ask parents to use our clean & well-e quipped nursery. This Free Service is available for newborns and infants (birth through 24 months). Your cooperation is needed & appreciated! Ladies’ Conference Hammond, Indiana October 21-23 The ladies who have registered for the International Ladies’ Conference need to pay the remaining balance of $100 by Sunday, October 18. Ladies need to arrive at the church early on Wednesday so that they can be loaded and leaving the church at 8 AM. This will allow you time to travel, eat and prepare before the service at 6 PM. Your lodging will be at the Hampton Inn & Suites of Munster, Indiana. This is just minutes from the First Baptist Church of Hammond. Ladies will return to the church on Friday around midnight.
