Learning to Be a Godly Friend

Close friendships with people who have a vibrant Christian life are an incredible treasure. The Lord uses people like this to encourage, strengthen, inspire, and sometimes convict me. Following are some observations of the role of a godly friend:

that friends love at all times—especially in adversity. Do you have the kind of friendship that unashamedly could declare love?

3. Godly friends participate with each other. Proverbs 18:24 teaches that friends show themselves friendly. Godly friends are eager to cooperate, encourage, and help each other.

1. Godly friends sharpen each other.
Proverbs 27:17 teaches us that “iron sharpeneth iron.” A godly friend w i l l 4. Godly friends rejoice “sharpen” you, and you for one another. A will “sharpen” him. Swedish proverb states, 2. Godly friends assure “Friendship doubles our each other through joy and divides our adversity. Godly friends grief.” love each o t h e r . 5. Godly friends forgive Proverbs 17:17 teaches one another. eventually hurt each other—and usually unintentionally. Yet, godly friends resolve tension and quickly forgive. 6. Godly friends spark the truth in each other. Proverbs 27:6 says, “Faithful are the wounds of a friend….” Godly friends are not afraid to lovingly and appropriately speak the truth to one another. In fact, they long to hear the truth from each other. Beyond that, godly friends rejoice in truth. They encourage each other in it and through it. Truth is the common bond of their hearts—a love for God’s Word.

Where Will I Spend Eternity? Your relationship to Jesus Christ is central to the answer to that question. Our Dilemma: We are, by nature, sinners who stand guilty and condemned before our Creator and Judge. In our thoughts and actions, we have disobeyed His perfect standards. We are sinners (Romans 3:10, 23). Our Inability: We are helpless to save ourselves. Forgiveness is a gift to be received, not a reward that can be earned. We need a Saviour (Ephesians 2:8-9). Our Saviour: Because of His love for us, God provided salvation through His Son, Jesus. He became a member of the human family, lived without sin, and died on the cross to pay for our sins. Jesus is the Saviour (Romans 5:8; John 3:16). Our Response: Salvation is an individual matter and requires a personal response on the part of anyone that wants to be saved. All who acknowledge their sin and place their trust in Christ are adopted as God’s children (Romans 10:9, 13).

Please show respect by turning off all electronic devices (PDA’s, cell phones) and refrain from text messaging during the church services.
