RETHINK CHURCH Last year in Fort Worth the 2008 General Conference set forth a bold initiate, designed to help the United Methodist Church reclaim its heritage of engaging people where they are. We remember that John Wesley preached in the fields, and thus the Conference approved the Rethink Church campaign.

“The campaign goal is to invite the church and those unchurched who seek spiritual fulfillment, to become more outwardly focused and engaged in the world. The campaign seeks to offer the church, not as a place to come to and stay within, but as a base of operation for expressing faith by moving out into communities and around the globe to become part of God’s plan for world transformation.” This campaign is another phase of the “Open Doors, Open Hearts, Open Minds” campaign which begin in 2000. Rethink church messages will appear in various media outlets such as television, radio, magazines and billboards. However, since we now live in an era of Digital media it will also include YouTube and iTunes and creative messages via cell-phone text messages. To explore this new advertising campaign, please go to the following Web site: www.10thousanddoors.org.

Fall Sermon Series Based on the book How Full Is Your Bucket? by Tom Rath and Donald O. Clifton This book is an examination of techniques that help build solid relationships, increase productivity and make a happier world. Sunday, September 13th - The Power of Negativity Numbers 13:25-33 Sunday, September 20th - Positivity, Negativity and Productivity Genesis: 37: 1-11; 45:21-24 Sunday, October 4th - A Bucket Overflowing Luke 23:39-43

This campaign will run in the United States for one year on a limited basis to ensure quality launch and implementation before launching globally. The primary target audience are those 18 to 34 years old. RETHINK CHURCH is a call to refocus our ecclesiology, to ask the question, “What has God called The United Methodist Church to be in the 21st century?” The Rethink Church campaign is consistent with the four areas of focus that have become a growing source of energy across The United Methodist Church. Growing congregations, becoming leaders in the world, addressing poverty and fighting disease are ways in which we may actively live out our faith and demonstrate to seekers that we are “rethinking church.” Why Should Wellspring Get Involved?

“Every local church has more doors than just the one that leads to Sunday morning worship. We are asking local churches to have a conversation about what it means to be a people in mission; to look at themselves and to become more welcoming and hospitable; to answer to the seeker’s desire for authenticity; to show that words are backed by action; and to extend a genuine welcome. We are asking you to lead your congregation and your community in defining what “Rethink Church” means to them.” The strength of discipleship is not in skillfully crafted advertising campaigns but in the hearts of people who are willing to engage in doing ministry as opposed to talking ministry. What will Rethink Church look like at Wellspring? How will Wellspring use Rethink Church as a tool for ministry in Georgetown? Shalom, Debra

Show Your Support! YOUTH VOLUNTEER NEEDS As the youth program continues to grow and flourish, there is a great need for support from the congregation. As members of the body of Christ, we have taken on the responsibility to raise our children and youth to have a living relationship with Christ. Without your support, there will be needs that cannot be filled. Please take time to consider helping our youth on their walk as Christians in one of the following areas. CONFIRMATION TEACHERS Volunteers to teach at least a 1 month block and also substitute teachers. The curriculum used is “Claim the Name” and is focused on teaching the students the heritage of Christianity, what it means to be a Christian and what it means to be a United Methodist. MENTORS Mentors are also needed to support the Confirmation Class. Mentors will spend time with their students and help to guide them in this journey. There will also be service projects and special outings that the Mentor will need to attend. Currently there is a need for 4 Mentors, 2 men and 2 women. This can also be done as a couple. There is a guide that the Mentors will use during this journey. SPECIAL GUEST TEACHERS During the year, if you have an interest in spending one Sunday discussing a specific topic with the confirmation class, we are in need of special guest teachers. MIDDLE SCHOOL TEACHERS Volunteers to teach at least a 1 month block and also substitute teachers. The 7th and 8th grade students will be going through the stories of the bible, old and new testaments, and learning how they apply to today. SR. HIGH TEACHERS Volunteers to substitute teach. The Sr. High students will use discussion based curriculum to strengthen their understanding and relationship with Christ.

Classes will resume on September 8th for Preschool. WONDERFUL NEWS! There were so many requests for A Child’s Place that we had to add another teacher on staff.

Early in my pastoral ministry some young ladies at the church came to me and said, “We want to be a part of the Relay for Life Campaign. Will you support us in organizing a team?” At that moment I did not know what Relay for Life was, so they explained it, and I agreed to both support and participate in the walk. On the night of the event, I was astonished as I looked at the participants in the first walk around the track and saw so many members of our church. The first walk was only for those who were cancer survivors. On that night cancer became more than the name for a disease; it became faces of people I knew and cared for. Since that time I have witnessed both church and family members succumb to the disease. And while I have not been fortunate enough to serve in another church that sponsored a Relay for Life Team, I have been fortunate to serve where women were in touch with supporting the Race for the Cure and even went beyond to participate in the 3 day walk. This year our own Linda Gustainis will be participating in the Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk. She will walk 60 miles over the course of three days with thousands of other women and men. Each person participating in the walk is asked to raise at least $2500.00 in donations. The net proceeds will support breast cancer research, education, screening and treatment through Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund. Linda serves as co-chair of the church’s Outreach Committee, which is chaired by Lew French. She and her husband John have four sons: Kelly, Clint, Jake, and Dylan. Clint and Jake went on Senior High Mission Trip to Southhaven, MS, and sometimes on Sunday morning you can find Jake running the sound board at the 11:00 am service. The walk is November 5th, 6th and 7th. I hope you will show your support to Linda both prayerfully and financially. You can donate online at http://www.the3day.org/. Just click on Donate Now and search for her personal fundraising page (Linda Gustainis). Or call 800.996.3DAY to donate over the phone. Because we are a church with three services, and Linda and her family primarily attend the 9:30 service, I am including a picture of her below. Take the time to say hello to her and show you support. After all, if you know anything about walking, you know that 20 miles in one day is no small undertaking, especially when you have to do it again the next day. --Debra

The initial meeting of planning for this year’s Fall Festival was held on Wednesday, August 19th. We are thankful for all who came and shared their ideas. Some have already volunteered their services. Gary Davis has volunteered to the BBQ and Saundra Lockwood has volunteered to coordinate Kids Activities. Gary and I are envisioning this year’s event as a great opportunity for Community Outreach and a time of churchwide fellowship. So there are several other volunteer opportunities available to make this a great fun filled event. The date of the event is Saturday, October 10th and the time is from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm. If you are interested in serving please contact Mark & Deborah McCartney @ 512- 876-4822.
