TOTAL SMOKING BAN ENTERS FORCE Croatia has started with a complete ban on smoking from Wednesday the 6th of May. Smoking at bars will only be allowed on terraces, while restaurants would have the possibility of allocating a separate room for smokers. Also, the bill ban smoking on all work places. Smoking has

already been banned in health, social institutional and education facilities. The new bill also introduces a special health warning on every pack of cigarettes. Health Minister Darko Milinovic said with the new law the government want to change people’s smoking habits and protect nonsmokers.

CROATIAN STUDENTS UNINTERESTED IN STUDYING ABROAD Croatian students are not interested in studying abroad according to a new Gallup poll. The research project commissioned by the European Commission featured contact with 15,000 students in 31 European countries in February. Researchers found that two-thirds of the 500 Croatian students contacted were completely disinterested in studying abroad, according to the daily Jutarnji list. Croatian professors say one reason for lack of interest is that most European educational exchange

Mark Thomas [email protected] Welcome to our beautiful city and to the ninth edition of the second season of “The Sibenik Times”. Is this the result of global warming? One week we are bathing in sunshine and temperatures reaching the mid 30’s and the next we have thunderstorms and rain and a drop of 20° in the temperature. I’ve lived in Croatia for almost eleven years and I’ve never experienced weather like this at this time of the year. The first week of June would normally mean beaches are packed and tourists are scuttling for the nearest shade to ease their sunburn. Instead we have lightening strikes that are destroying trees and damaging buildings and rain that’s flooding the streets, unbelievable. I know I’m English and the English just love to talk about the weather but this really is madness. I experienced a situation last week that I’ve never seen before. It was a stinking hot day with temperatures around the 30’s and in literally one minute the sky darkened and hail fell! Hail in 30ºc, is it just me or is that strange. Although you can never guarantee the weather I’d be 99% sure that at this period of the year it would be unbroken sunshine. In fact a couple of English tourists stopped me the other day, in their raincoats, and explained that in England at the moment the sun was shining brightly and the country was in a mini heat wave, strange but true. To make matters worse the forecasts, if we are to believe them, are just as bad for the next two weeks. So I’d like to take this opportunity to apologise to all of you tourists who expected to be relaxing on the beach and topping up your tan. You’ll just have to use this weather as an excuse to visit some of the many cultural monuments in the city or to spend time over a really long lunch in a nice restaurant. And by the way don’t forget your umbrella!

ZAGREB-SPLIT MOTORWAY TUNNELS OPENS After many years of waiting both tunnels of the Sveti Rok and Mala Kapela tunnels on the Zagreb-Split motorway were opened last week on Saturday. The Sveti Rok Tunnel near Lika is 5,687 metres long and goes through Velebit Mountain, one of the highest mountains in the Republic of Croatia. One tube of the tunnel was opened in 2003. The other tunnel - the Mala Kapela Tunnel - goes through Mala Kapela Mountain. One tube of the tunnel was

BAD STORM STRIKES SIBENIK

Minister of the Sea, Transport and Development Bozidar Kalmeta officially opened both tunnel tubes last week amongst lots of pomp and ceremony. The two tunnel tubes have cost 787.5 million kunas or 107 million Euros, a sizable investment for the country.

The city of Sibenik was hit by a bad storm in the early hours of Thursday morning. The storm damaged at cars and buildings in a short time and produced over 50 litres of rain per square metre. Local police said they had received numerous calls from city residents about cars crushed by trees downed by high winds. The temperature in Sibenik at 8 am this morning was 18 degrees, in comparison

to 32 degrees at the same time yesterday. The city and region is set for another week of unsettled weather with forecasts of heavy rain and thunderstorms. This kind of weather is extremely rare for this time of year and has left locals who would normally be enjoying the start of the swimming season completely confused. The amount of damage caused by the storm is still unknown.

• Sibenik is the only original city on the coast of the Adriatic Sea. All of the other Croatian towns and cities originated from old Illyrian, Greek or Roman settlements. • In the Sibenik – Knin County there are two national parks – Krka and Kornati National Parks.

Thousands of people are planning to travel to Croatia's capital Zagreb in August to watch rock legends U2 in concert. More could yet follow them on a Croatia travel experience because tickets for the August 9th gig at Stadium Makimir have not sold out. No tickets remain for the August 10th concert at the same venue, but those planning to stay in Croatian accommodation this summer may wish to take in what is likely to be a fantastic musical experience the day before. A number of big-name bands are putting on shows in Croatia in the coming months, including English group Arctic Monkeys. Meanwhile, Depeche Mode had to cancel a scheduled concert in May due to an illness affecting one of the band members, but they are expected to name a new Croatian date later this year. With Croatia playing Ukraine in a World Cup qualifying match in Zagreb next weekend, the country is proving it knows how to host big events.

CROATIAN AMBASSADOR HELPED INJURED EUROPEAN COMMISSION EMPLOYEE A Croatian Minister has been hailed as a hero after he braved electrocution to rescue an injured man zapped by a high-voltage blast. Croatian–Slovene talks about their disputed border were interrupted by a fire alarm last Wednesday at European Commission headquarters in Brussels. The Croatian delegation led by Foreign Affairs and European Integration Minister Gordan Jandrokovic was planning to leave the building when they noticed an injured European Commission employee who had been hurt by an electric shock. The man was fixing an electricity problem caused by last week’s fire. An electric shock caused by a broken water pipe burned the man’s hands and legs. The Croatian delegation decided to stay and help the injured man. Croatian Ambassador to the European Union Branko Baricevic, who is a doctor, took the man to a bathroom and covered his burns with water.

CROAT GRADUATES FROM UNIVERSITY AT THE AGE OF 66 A Croatian pensioner has revealed how we got a history degree after studying with professors who were younger than he was. Zvonimir Spisic from the city of Velika Gorica near Zagreb graduated from university at the age of 66. Spisic, now aged 68, has only just gone public with his story about how he decided to become a student at the age of 60. Now, two years after receiving his degree in Croatian history from Zagreb University, he has told his story to the daily 24 sata. Spisic said he had actually been persuaded by the university secretary to take the entrance-examination. He failed it the first

time he took it but passed it on his second attempt. Spisic said: “My son had just finished high school. I arrived with him at his university, looked around the history department and decided I could obtain a degree. At that time, I had already been retired for three years and actually had some doubts about my ability.” Spisic said most of his professors had been younger than he was but that had not bothered him at all. He persisted and graduated with excellent notes in 2007. He added: “Most of the students believed I was a professor. I just love history and that is the reason I studied it.”

SUMMER SAILING SCHEDULE STARTS ON ADRIATIC A summer sailing schedule has started from Monday last week between Croatian coastal towns and cities served by ferry and ship services. During the summer, the frequency of ferry sailings is usually increased and fast hydrofoil services are added. The summer sailing schedule remains in operation from 1 June to 30 September. The Agency for ferry transport of Croatia announced that from

the 1st June the line Pula-(Unije)-Mali Losinj-(Ilovik)-Zadar, and the new lines are Vela Luka-Lastovo and Split-MilnaHvar have started. A daily fast ferry line is also the Split-Hvar and weekly fast ferry lines are the Split –Milna (Island of Brac). According to Agency statistic in 2008 some 11,887,998 passengers were transported and 2,914,683 vehicles using pubic ferry and ship services on Adriatic.

• The lowest populated islands of the Adriatic Sea are both located in the Sibenik area - Tribunj i Krapanj. • The island of Žirje is the furthest populated island from the Sibenik coast, located 20.4 kilometers south west from Sibenik. • In the Adriatic Sea you are only allowed to dive with if you have finished a recognized diving course and have a certificate with you. • More than 50 percent of the total number of berths in the Croatian Adriatic Sea are located in the Sibenik – Knin county. • The Sibenik – Knin County has 806 kilometers of coastline, five rivers, three large and ten small lakes. • One of the oldest and most popular meals in Dalmatia and Sibenik is sardines in olive oil. • That dolphins can be often see in open, but even in narrow local waters of Sibenik. • On the 28th of August 1895 on the Krka Falls, one of the first multi-phase electricity grid in the world was put into operation. • Sibenik’s Town Library was founded on the 17th February 1922 and its first days it only had 1105 books, while it had only 26 inhabitants of Sibenik as its members.

LAST YEAR ONE MILLION BOTTLES OF JÄGER SOLD IN CROATIA Last year, one million bottles of the herbal liqueur Jägermeister were sold in Croatia, which makes it one of the biggest selling foreign alcoholic drinks in the country, according to data provided by the company Studio G3, importer and distributer of spirits and soft drinks. Jägermeister has captured 16% of the market of imported alcoholic drinks, and 83% of imported bitter drinks. This famous liqueur is pro­ duced from 56 ingredients coming from throughout the world (cinna­mon from Sri Lanka, bitter orange from Australia, ginger root from South Asia to name but a few). The secret recipe has not been changed to this day, and was developed by Curt Mast in the small German town of Wolfenbüttel.

Knin – a city steeped in history

In the vicinity of today's Knin there was a town called Burnum which served as an Illyrian and Roman military camp in the 1st century BC. Knin is mentioned in the 10th century in the history of Constantine Porphyrogenitus as the centre of a parish. A Croatian diocese was founded 1040 and its jurisdiction extended to the Drava river, with the "Croatian bishop" at its head. Knin was also the capital of the Kingdom of Croatia around 1080 during the rule of King Dmitar Zvonimir. This heritage has led to Knin sometimes being known as the city of Croatian kings or Zvonimir's city (Zvonimirov grad). Between the 10th and the 13th century, Knin was a notable military fort. The huge 10th century medieval fortress on Mt. Spas dominates the centre of town, and its present aspect dates back to the beginning of the 18th century. It is one of the largest fortification buildings in Dalmatia and is divided into the upper, medium and lower town, connected by drawbridges. Its strategic position played an important role in many wars and power changes — beginning with the Croatian rulers, then Kingdom of Hungary, the Venetians, Turks, to the Austrians and the French. On May 29th, 1522, the fort of Knin fell to the Ottoman Empire, and Croatian folk massively left the town. The town was populated with Serb refugees

by the Ottomans. Century and a half later, on September 11, 1688, it was captured by the Venetian Republic. Subsequently, the Croatian population partially returned and the Franciscans built a monastery and a church there in 1708. Knin passed on to the Habsburgs together with Dalmatia in 1797 according to the Treaty of Campoformio. After the Peace of Pressburg in 1805, the French Empire gained the city and incorporated it into the Illyrian Provinces in 1809. By 1813, the Austrians regained the control over the town. By the end of the 19th century, as a part of the Habsburg domain of Dalmatia, Knin grew steadily becoming an important commercial as well as the road and railway center. In 1867, Knin became a part of Dalmatia - a territorial entity within Cisleithania. After the First World War Knin became a part of the State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs in 1918, which subsequently became part of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (Kingdom of Yugoslavia since 1929). Knin is located near source of river Krka, at tri-border point of Lika, Bosnia and Dalmatia, at crossing of important roads between inland and seaside, which is why Knin is often called Key of Croatia and Door to Dalmatia. Knin is located within a karst field, surrounded by mountains which seven rivers

fortress of knin • Construction began in 9th century, at the time of establishment of the Old Croatian state. Some Croatian Kings had temporary residence in Knin, but King Dmitar Zvonimir resided there permanently. The fortress is divided into 5 parts that are interconnected. These are: Donji grad (Lower Town), Srednji grad (Middle Town), Gornji grad (Upper Town) or Kaštel Knin, Kaštel lab or Bandijera, and Južni grad (Southern Town) or Belveder station. The fortress is located at 345 meters above sea-level and at 100 meters above the city of Knin. It is 470 meters long and 100 wide at the widest part. The defense walls, which surround the fortress from all sides and are almost 2 km long, rise partially up to 20 meters. The fortress of Knin is one of the largest Croatian fortification monuments and it is the second largest military fortification in Europe, extremely indented and preserved as a whole. It is a living cultural monument, having a museum, exhibition areas and a restaurant and it certainly represents a main brand of cultural tourism at this side of river Krka.

It is bordered by the following mountain ranges: on the north by Plješevica and Orlovica, on the east by Dinara (the highest mountain peak in Croatia 1831 m) and on the south by Promina. Mountain ranges are intersected by many fertile fields: Kninsko Polje, Mokro Polje and partially by Cetinsko polje on the east. An abundance of water is the greatest natural resource. River Krka has six confluents in Knin region: Krčić, Kosovčica, Orašnica, Butižnica, Čikola and Zrmanja on the west side. There is also river Cetina on the eastern part of Knin region. The climate is sub-Mediterranean, between Mediterranean and continental-mountain climate. Average annual air temperature in Knin 12,9°C with cold, windy winters and very hot and dry summers. Knin is a crossing of roads and railway tracks between coastal and inland Croatia. In terms of traffic, Knin is connected with big Croatian Adriatic county centres and sea ports of Split (100 km), Šibenik (56 km) and Zadar (91 km). International airports Split and Zadar are also located just an hour of pleasant drive from Knin. Traffic and tourist favorability of this area has increased also due to the nearby national parks (Krka, Kornati, Paklenica and Plitvice), as well as of nature park (Velebit) and of ornithological park (Vransko jezero).

Woman’s Match Race 2009 For the first time in Croatia a woman’s match race will be held next week. From the 10th of June till the 14th of June the seas around Rogoznica will be filled with yachts from across the world. Apart from four crews from Croatia there will also be crews from Denmark, Italy, the Netherlands and Portugal as well as the possibility of crews from Slovenia and the Czech Republic. The Marina Frapa and the Yacht Club Frapa in Rogoznica are the main organisers of this event and the

whole event is sponsored by the Croatian Ministry of Education and Sport. For the competitors there is the extra inventive that all points won at this event will count towards the overall world “Woman’s Match Race.” It is also important to mention that the match race for woman has been included as an Olympic event which will definitely help towards the overall development of this sport. If you are in the region this should prove to be an interesting event and well worth a visit.

MARINA FRAPA Marina Frapa wears a beauty crown among the Adriatic marinas, and it is certainly one of the most beautiful marinas of the Mediterranean. Knin is a historical town in the Šibenik-Knin county of Croatia, located near the source of the river Krka, in the Dalmatian hinterland, on the railroad Zagreb–Split. The city is of extreme importance for infrastructural reasons, as the railroads from Zadar, Split and Šibenik pass through Knin, going north to towards Zagreb. I caught up with the director of the Knin tourist board, Mr. Ante Šimić, and he certainly has plenty of reasons to be satisfied. •• How is the season going in Knin so far this year? It is still very early in the season for Knin, however I can say that we've had plenty of tourists already in the city. This is shown by the number of overnight stays we've had already in the town and the number of tourists that come into the Knin tourist board everyday to ask for information. As Knin is not a standard seaside destination our season is slightly different for those resorts on the Dalmatian coast.

•• What are your expectations for this year? I must be honest so far we haven't seen too much influence of the financial recession; in fact things look relatively positive. We traditionally have in May and June plenty of business from excursions and companies with team-building weeks. Then in July and August we tend to have guests who are staying in coastal resorts nearby. Thankfully there are numerous resorts in the Sibenik County and often the tourists staying there will visit Knin on a day trip. •• How are the reservations in Knin? I have some information from a travel agency in Knin that has had numerous enquires from tourists from all over the world. In fact the owner told me that he has had enquires from Italy, Germany and France about fishing in Knin. •• Has the Tourist Board of Knin got involved with the action “Love Croatia”? Every year the tourist board organises cleaning actions of the various paths and walkways in the area. The city of Knin does an excellent job in keeping the

Za sezonu u Kninu još je prerano, ali svejedno mogu reći da zasad u gradu imamo popriličan broj turista. To nam pokazuju brojke dosad ostvarenih noćenja i broj turista koji svakodnevo navraćaju u turistički ured po informacije. S obzirom da Knin nije uobičajeno morsko ljetovalište tako se i naša sezo-

Zatim, u srpnju i kolovozu brinemo se o gostima iz obližnjih hotela na obali. Zahvaljujući tome što u Šibenskoj županiji imamo mnogo hotela, gosti koji borave u njima često dolaze u Knin na izlet. •• Kako ide s rezervacijama u Kninu? Od putničke agencije u Kninu imam informaciju da stižu mnogobrojni upiti od turista sa svih strana svijeta. Točnije, vlasnik agencije rekao mi je da mnoštvo upita vezano za riba-

Recently we’ve erected a statue of King Tomislav in the centre of Knin which I’m sure will be a popular spot. •• What is the total capacity of Knin as a tourist destination? As things stand at the moment the city has around 140 beds and around the city with have another 50 beds in various types of accommodation. I am particularly pleased because the City of Knin has started looking into finding investors for the construction of another hotel. This could mean, if everything goes to plan, that Knin could double its current capacity in the next few years. •• Which local specialties would you recommend tourist to try whilst in the city? There are many delicacies from the Knin area that are well worth trying. Firstly the smoked ham (prsut) from the area is truly excellent. Then, of course, with smoked ham the best choice would be one of our local cheeses. There are so many varieties of cheese in Knin, cheese

with vegetables and goat’s cheese to name a couple. There are many local producers of cheese and all of them have their own taste and texture. Apart from that there are varieties of dried and smoked meat. I would also mention a mushroom that grows locally, the head of the mushroom looks like the honeycomb made by bees. It goes very well with eggs as well as a number of local recipes. In fact at the moment in Knin is the season for lambs, so my recommendation for someone visiting Knin at the moment would be to try the local spit roasted lamb with potatoes, you can’t go wrong. •• How would you describe Knin to someone who has never been to Knin? It’s difficult to describe in one sentence. Knin is a city that has a rich cultural heritage, a city that beautiful natural attractions, a city with great hospitality and a city that always meets its guests with wide open arms. A small city for big events. •• How would you describe Knin in three words? Nature, history and hospitatlity.

Nedavno smo u centru Knina postavili spomenik kralju Tomislavu i siguran sam da će to mjesto postati popularno. •• Koji je kapacitet Knina kao turističkog odredišta? Kako sad stvari stoje, grad raspolaže sa 140 kreveta i još 50 kreveta u prigradskim naseljima u različitim smještajnim kapacitetima. Osobno sam time zadovoljan jer je grad Knin krenuo u potragu za investitorima za izgradnju još jednog hotela. To bi značilo, ako sve bude po planu, da bi Knin u sljedećih nekoliko godina mogao udvostručiti sadašnje smještajne kapacitete. •• Koje biste lokalne specijalitete preporučili turistima dok su u gradu? U Kninskom kraju ima mnogo specijaliteta koji su vrijedni da ih se proba.

Prije svega to bi bio pršut koji je u ovim krajevima izvrstan. Uz to, naravno, sljedeći izbor bio bi neki od naših lokalnih sireva. U Kninu imamo mnogo vrsta sireva, sir s povrćem, ovčji sir, samo da spomenem tih par vrsta. Imamo mnogo lokalnih proizvođača sireva i svaki od njih ima vlastiti okus i teksturu. Uz to, postoje i različite vrste dimljenog i sušenog mesa. Spomenuo bih također i gljive koje rastu u okolici, njihove kapice nalik su saćama koje izrađuju pčele. Vrlo su ukusne u kombinaciji s jajima i ostalim lokalnim receptima. Sada je u Kninu sezona janjaca, tako da bi moja preporuka za posjetitelje bila janjetinja s ražnja, s krompirima. The town library “Juraj Šižgorić” is the largest and most significant library in the Sibenik Knin County. It was established on the 17th February 1922, and from 1970 it’s named Juraj Šižgorić after a great Croatian humanist. The library has three departments: children’s, national, and scientific (with a periodical section and reading room). The library has 14 employers, 11 of them are highly qualified (6 qualified librarians and 5 assistants). The library is opened to the public every weekday from 7:30 to 19:00, from 8:00 to12:00 on Saturdays. In 2001 the library had 131 000 books and 27 000 magazines. From 1997 everything is computerized: the library uses Crolist (Unix version) in its Oracle

THE ISLAND OF ŽIRJE The Port of Sibenik is one of the oldest and best-sheltered ports on the Croatian part of the Adriatic coast. It is located at the inundated river Krka estuary, which forms a unique natural resort 75 kilometers long with an altitude difference of 360 meters. The port is naturally sheltered from waves and winds, and is accessed through St. Ante's channel (2700

meters long and 120-300 meters wide), which enables access for vessels up to 50,000 DWT. The total port surface is 430 ha (348 ha of sea surface). The port is 10 kilometers long, 300-1200 meters wide with depths between 8-40 meters. Average sea salinity in the port is 18-20 per mill on the surface and 35.4 per mill at the depth of 4 meters.

The island has many lovely bays and harbors. Above Velika Stupica traces of a late-antique castle can still be seen, which served for protection from the Saracens and from pirates. The Bay of Mala Stupica also has remains of old walls. According to tradition, the Illyrian Queen Teuta used both the Stupica bays as harbors. There

are traces of ancient structures on all the small hilltops on the southern side of the island from Vrh Kapica to Kruga, which clearly shows that the island used to be well fortified in ancient times. The Church of the Assumption (Velika Gospa) is from 1480.

Goran Visnjic, born September 9, 1972, is a Croatian actor who has appeared in American films and television productions. He is best known for his role as Dr. Luka Kovač in the hit television series ER. Now credited as Goran Visnjic in his English-language work, he adopted the simplified spelling of his name when he came to the United States in the late '90s,

KNIN Knin is a historical town in the Šibenik-Knin county of Croatia, located near the source of the river Krka, in the Dalmatian hinterland, on the railroad Zagreb–Split. Knin rose to prominence twice in history, as a onetime capital of both the medieval Croatian state and briefly of the unrecognized, and now defunct Republic of Serbian Krajina. The city is of extreme importance for infrastructural reasons, as the railroads from Zadar, Split and Šibenik pass through Knin, going north to towards Zagreb.

Finding your dream home Sibenik has become a very popular destination for foreign investors looking for holiday homes. Described as “the new Cote d’Azur” and “the Eastern Rivera” in the press, Sibenik now attracts investors from around the world. But how easy is it to buy property in this investor’s paradise. Here are a couple of tips when you are first thinking about buying a house or apartment. The first thing to think about is the law, before twelve years foreigners were not allowed to buy property in Croatia but that has all changed •• What is the best option for a foreigner buyer to buy a house? There are two ways to go about buying a property here the first and the best option is to buy as a private individual. You need to apply to the correct authority and wait for the papers and permission. The other way is to open a company and buy the property through that company. This second route is definitely quicker but in my opinion not the way to go. There are a few things that you need to go through and check lists that you need to follow. The laws are changing here very quickly as Croatia is preparing to enter the EU. The main problem that we have had in the past is when foreigners have bought through a company and when they

come to sell it the next buyer doesn’t want to buy the company. A lot of buyers bought property through a company to avoid paying the VAT but the tax office has caught onto this and are asking people to pay the VAT back because the didn’t operate the company as a trading entity. The reason why people didn’t want to buy privately was that they had to wait two or three years to get permission. This has now changed and one of my clients got permission after just six weeks. Currently the average waiting time is eight months, whether the government like it or not things have to change as the regulations of the EU come into affect. Alongside Albania, the south-east European nation has been permitted entry into the alliance, which according to Obelisk Investment Property, can pave the way for European Union membership soon afterwards. James Gonzalez, marketing analyst at the group, predicts a bright future for the Balkan hotspot. He said: "NATO membership is fundamental in inspiring confidence for foreign investors and as … seen in the case of Romania, becoming a member of NATO is hugely beneficial for a country's economy." Mr Gonzalez added that it was likely there would be "big increases" in the amount of foreign investment interest Croatia attracts.
