ADRIATIC SEA WATER EASILY PASSES QUALITY TEST

Mark Thomas [email protected] Welcome to our beautiful city and to the tenth edition of the second season of “The Sibenik Times”. When will Croatia finally enter the European Union? And come to think of it do we really want to be a part of the union? There are mixed feelings coming from the press and the public in general about actually joining. It’s probably a question of “better the devil you know” syndrome. My own opinion is that we do need to enter, but not at any cost. Entering into the elite group would offer Croatia more pluses than negatives, not only in financial terms but also in human terms. The right to be able to work and travel freely in other member states could be a double edged sword but nether the less a sword that is needed, if only to make the whole country more competitive. The ease of being able to use the Euro as our official currency would immediately bring bonuses. This year has seen Croatia become a full member of NATO and although there were some negative reactions to this I believe that in the long run it’s a positive step. I look at entry into NATO as an insurance policy for the country, sure we’ll have to pay around 3 million Euros a year, but that’s a small price to pay for security. So joining the EU would also cost the country, but the benefits far outweigh the costs. As we depend on tourism for the growth of our economy and as the cast majority of our guests come from European Union countries you don’t have to be Einstein to see the advantages. Anyway, at the end of the day, it’s only a matter of time before we do enter this European club. And it’s much better to be inside rather than standing outside and looking though the window, of what is a huge window of opportunity for Croatia. Latest rumours, if we are to believe them, say that by 2012 we’ll be finally inside. That day for me can’t come soon enough.

NEW NIGHTLIFE-GUIDE JOBS PROLIFERATE DURING RECESSION Croats have come up with some new jobs that may help them survive the recession. One of them is the job of a “nightlife guide.” There are two kinds of such jobs. The first is that of guides to evening parties, and the second is that of guides dressed in historic costumes who take tourists around a city and relate its history. It is hoped such jobs will help reduce unemployment and increase tourism revenue. The daily Vecernji list has reported Croats in such jobs cannot count on a steady income, only on the generosity of their customers, often meaning how much they are willing to pay for a good party. Other new, unusual jobs in Croatia include those of trampoline coaches and founders of pet-only airlines.

GERMANS SAY CELSIUS IS WORLD´S 15TH SEXIEST WOMAN Croatian football star and Karlsruhe player Dino Drpic’s wife Nives Celsius has been voted the world's 15th-sexiest woman by German FHM (For Him Magazine) readers. The favourite men's magazine rates Celsius, 27, as one of the world’s 100 sexiest women. Celsius left other beauties such as Alicia Keys, Rihanna and Gisela Bundchen in the dust. First on the list is 19- year old singer Mandy Capristo. Celsius is very pleased with her rating, especially since it comes from German readers, according to the daily Jutarnji list. For Celsius, it is proof she has been noticed by the German public. Celsius is planning to make use of her celebrity status. The first foreigner to write a column for German tabloid Bild, Celsius wants to record a song in English. According to Celsius' manager Kristijan Lopac, she is negotiating a deal with one of the most-popular German producers.

An analysis of the water in the Adriatic Sea off the coast of Croatia has shown that it is generally of very-high quality. The analysis at a number of points off the coast found the water to be of the highest quality at 1,144 locations, of good quality at 16 locations and of quality deemed suitable for swimming at nine locations, according to the official website of the ministry of environmental protection (http://www.mzopu.hr). The analyses took place from the 1st to the 26th of May at 904 locations and from the 25th to the 29th of May at 265 locations. Analysis of the quality of sea water has traditionally been performed at 15-day intervals from the beginning of May until the end of September.

PRIME MINISTER MAKING OFFICIAL VISIT TO THE USA Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader is making an official visit to the USA where he has met with EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn and US UN Ambassador Susan Rice. Sanader and Rehn reportedly agreed Croatia and Slovenia would find a way to resolve their border dispute blocking Croatia’s EU accession negotiations, Croatian national television (HRT) has reported. The two men said the negotiations might end this year. Rice said Croatia and the USA had been cooperating in exemplary fashion in the UN Security Council. Rice added the US government appreciated its partnership with Croatia in NATO and the UN and expected bilateral relations would continue to intensify. Sanader will also meet with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

CROATIA WILL JOIN EU NO EARLIER THAN IN 2012

Austrian MEP Hannes Swoboda, the European Parliament (EP)’s Rapporteur on Croatia, believes Croatia will enter the EU no earlier than in 2012. Swoboda said in an interview in last week’s edition of the Vienna newspaper Die Presse: “If Croatia resolves its border dispute with Slovenia, it can enter the EU no earlier than in 2012. That is because we will be able to end ne-

gotiations with Croatia only in 2010, and we will then need to start a ratification process for which we will need around a year and a half,” Swoboda added. The Austrian MEP said he had once been more optimistic about Croatia’s earlier accession. Swoboda also said Croatia’s accession to the European Union entrance should not mark the end of EU enlargement.

KING ARTHUR WAS BURIED IN CROATIA A British historian is claiming King Arthur was buried in Croatia. Historian John Matthews has told the Croatian daily newspaper Jutarnji List he believes the gravestone found in the southern Croatian village of Podstrana is really King Arthur’s. "If proven true, this theory will cause huge discontent in the UK. When we were working on Jerry Bruckheimer's movie about King Arthur, many Brits called me a thief. They accused me of trying to steal King Arthur from the UK. There is no doubt it would be useful to do proper archaeological research in Croatia's southern province of Dalmatia. Who knows what we would find," Matthews has said.

FOOD PRODUCTS WIN SUPERIOR TASTE AWARDS 2009 Four Croatian food products have won Superior Taste Awards 2009. The products are Podravka's Plum Jam and its Sardines in Olive Oil, Sirena - Mala Sirana’ Pag cheese and Zagrebacka pivovara’s (Zagreb Brewery) Ozujsko beer. The Superior Taste Award is a symbol of excellence that is awarded by the International Taste & Quality Institute in Brussels - the leading world organization for the evaluation of the quality of food products. The award ceremony was held at the end of last week in Brussels. The competition featured 796 products from 58 countries, of which 525 won awards.

SLOVENIANS FAVOUR VACATIONS TO CROATIA

"Mother Teaching her Child to Pray" by Croatian sculptor Ivan Mestrovic (1883-1962) has been sold for 99,650 GBP at a Sotheby's art auction. The auction in the category 19th and 20th Century European Sculpture occurred last week in London. The sculpture is emblematic of a central theme in Mestrovic's art, motherhood as a sublime mission. The woman's features recall those of the sculptor's second wife Olga, with whom he had four children. Mestrovic's first visit to the United States took place in 1924, when he exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum of Art. His "Mother Teaching Her Child to Pray" was modelled there in 1925. The bronze sculpture was purchased by Lady Cowdray in 1930 or 1931. After her death, her granddaughter Joan Acton took possession of it.

Slovenians holidaying away from their home country last year were most likely to choose Croatia as a travel destination, official figures have revealed. According to the Survey on Tourism Travels of Domestic Population by the Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia, 57 per cent of those who had a four-night-or-longer trip outside of Slovenia went to stay in Croatian accommodation. This was some way ahead of the other most popular countries for a

DEALS TO BE FOUND ON CROATIA TRAVEL Train passengers in Croatia will be able to find a number of special deals over the next few months, reports the Croatian Times. Croatian Railways is offering free or cheaper car transport for anyone taking a night train from the country' capital city Zagreb to the port of Split on the Dalmatia coast between June 1st and the end of September. This may be particularly relevant for backpackers who are heading to the Dalmatia vacation as part of their trip. Each year, there are thousands of young people from across Europe who travel across the continent by train. Croatia, with its typically sunny climate and beautiful scenery is a popular stop-off point for those embarking on such expeditions. The country's other attractions include its history and mixture of ancient and modern architecture.

Zlarin Zlarin is a small island of the Dalmatian coast of Croatia near the city of Šibenik. Administratively, it is part of the ŠibenikKnin County. In winter times the island has a population of 276 people, but from March to October its population grows substantially up to 1,500 people. Zlarin has a large expatriate community. Zlarin’s highest point is Klepac at 174 metres above sea level. During bright and sunny days from this point you can see Mount Velebit and

volcanic Jakuba island in the Adriatic sea. Zlarin has a myriad of fig and cypress trees, and other natural plants. Inner parts of the island are uninhabited and covered with thick forest. Zlarin is one of few islands on the Adriatic Sea that do not allow access to cars. Zlarin is, with an area of 8.19 km², and 18.7 km of coastline, the third largest island of the Šibenik archipelago, south-west from Šibenik in middle Dalmatia. It is situated a bit more than 2 km far from

the mainland. In the administrative and territorial partition of the Republic of Croatia, Zlarin belongs to the Šibenik-Knin county, more precisely to the city of Šibenik. The island is connected to the mainland cities of Šibenik and Vodice by ship, about 10 times a day. There is evidence of life on Zlarin since prehistory from Neolithic times to Roman ages. There is also evidence that Liburnians often visited and maybe lived on Zlarin. Zlarin is famous for its red

corals. In summer, when many tourists are on the island, one may witness a ceremony that is held for sailors who are going to the sea at night to find corals. Dalmatian songs are sung, and men and women are dressed in folk costumes typical of the area. The ceremony is held to wish luck to the sailors. Traditional clothes are usually made of light fabric with three different colors, black, red and white. Women’s clothes are profusely decorated. It is customary to we-

ar gold necklaces and earrings with folk clothes, as well as white socks and black shoes. Ladies wear knives on the back of folk clothes. Each year the yacht club of Zlarin organizes three boat regattas, “Zlarinska regata krstaša”, “Latinskin idrun na kureja” and New Year “Zlarinska regata krstaša”. “Latinskin idrun na kureja” is reserved for wooden boats built on old, exclusively hand-made traditional ways, and propelled by Latin sail (mainsail, triangular sail).

Šepurine. Its area is 2.37 km², and it has population of 453 and is the third most densely populated island in Croatia. There are no cars on the island. Šepurine is located on the west side of the island opposite Vodice. Prvić Luka is situated in biggest bay on the south-east side and it is well protected from northern and western

winds. Famous polymath Faust Vrančić is buried in Prvić Luka as this island was the summer residence of his family. Located in central part of Adriatic in Sibenik archipelago. The name Prvic comes according to some source from Prvin-Croatian god of Spring. It seems that in old times hermits reside on Prvic. For its peace and silen-

ce, sweet smalls and colours that somehow grown together with the island in this crazy world there is still a place that is not wasted by the time. Although not big by the surface (2,37 km2) guests are always amazed by island diversity. The vegetation on the island is outstanding with aromatic Mediterranean herbs and pi-

nes while the local population grows figs, olives and vine. The coastline is mild and suitable for swimming along its whole its length. There are no cars on the island and although it is only 1000 metes away from the mainland it is a real oasis of peace and tranquillity. There are two villages on the islandPrvic Luka and Sepurine.

Woman’s Match Race 2009. For the first time in Croatia a woman’s match race will be held next week. From the 10th of June till the 14th of June the seas around Rogoznica will be filled with yachts from across the world. Apart from four crews from Croatia there will also be crews from Denmark, Italy, the Netherlands and Portugal as well as the possibility of crews from Slovenia and the Czech Republic. The Marina Frapa and the Yacht Club Frapa in Rogoznica are the main organisers of this event and the whole event is sponsored by the Croatian Ministry of Education and Sport. For the competitors there is the extra inventive that all points won at this event will count towards the overall world “Woman’s Match Race.” It is also important to mention that the match race for woman has been included as an Olympic event which will definitely help towards the overall development of this sport. If you are in the region this should prove to be an interesting event and well worth a visit.

Marina Frapa Marina Frapa wears a beauty crown among the Adriatic marinas, and it is certainly one of the most beautiful marinas of the Mediterranean. It is situated in the central part of the Croatian coast, between Sibenik and Split, in the heart of Dalmatia in Rogoznica, in a lovely bay of Soline, sheltered from all directions. The centre of the marina is an artificially built island in with a number of facilities such as: the reception area, a control tower, servicing facilities, a transit jetty of the length of 396 m suitable also for mega yachts, the hotel „Otok“ and the adjoining parking area, the majority of the catering facilities and other accompanying service-business facilities. The on-shore marina complex includes 10 jetties with 450 fully equipped berths and a guarded area for 150 dry berths. The indispensable on-shore facilities are the hotel „Kopno“, the outdoor swimming pools complex and a disco-night club, a luxury sports centre, the main conference hall, and the monitored parking area. The entire marina Frapa complex covers an area of more than 136 000 m2.

Prof. Zvonko Pešić – Principle of The Private Gymnasium in Sibenik

Future looks very bright The Private School of Sibenik certainly has big plans for the future. After building its facilities, staff and programs over the last few years the school has become one of the leading private high schools in the Republic of Croatia. Not only does it attract students from Croatia but also from all over the world. I caught up with Prof. Zvonko Pešić on the new terrace on the roof of the school which is in the process of being transformed into an outdoor classroom. Although the view is spectacular he is sure that it won’t distract the students to much. •• How many students do you have in total? At the moment we have three generations of students, there are around 30 students in every year and the maximum number of students in one class is 15. In total we have around 200 students in the school. That figure also takes into account the students that are learning and attending courses. We have courses of information and computer studies and courses of languages. A large number of these adult students come from the business world, such as banks and trade enterprises. •• How flexible is the school with its classroom space? Apart from the spaces and classrooms that we have in the school we also have the possibility to utilize the Garden of St Lawrence Monastery. I believe that in any space that we use for teaching the children need to feel comfortable and in that way we can have high quality lessons. In fact we have done everything possible to lower any kind of tension or outside pressures. In those kinds of environments children really learn. •• Do you have any foreign professors at the school? Yes, we do. It was always our goal for students to not only learn in Sibenik but also to study outside of the country. In this way they’d be able to not only learn a foreign language but also to experience another culture. As this idea has proved a little difficult to carry out we then realized that if we brought foreign teachers here the students would learn from them and this would give us a desired effect. In an indirect way we have given the students the feeling that they are learning in England or another foreign country. When

we started the school we had two professors from Ireland, one from Wales, one from America and one from Australia. This year we have a professor from Canada. These professors normally stay for one year here and teach languages. Of course learning a language directly from a native speaker is immensely more effective than learning from a Croatian teacher. Also at the same time the pupils can get to learn something of the culture and tradition of that country. •• Is this the only private school in Sibenik? Yes, this is the only private school in Sibenik. There is one in Zadar and in Split. We have tried to organize the school in a way to keep it “small.” By small I mean we keep the number of students in a classroom low and in that way students get a much more private education. Keeping the quality high is our overall aim. Unfortunately for us the Croatian authorities tend to have a negative view on private schools, especially when talking about high schools. In fact the country and the authorities don’t finance or even support the concept of private schools in any form. The only types of private schools they do recognize and prefer are religious schools, such as Orthodox schools and Jewish schools for example. They even finance these schools with around 80% of the total budget. On the other hand private schools don’t receive any money from the state and have to finance themselves by their own methods. Even though children in our school are learning the same program as children in religious schools, we even teach religion, we don’t receive any support. •• What are the plans for the future? The next step in expanding the school is to complete a classroom on the terrace on top of the building. This will be an extremely attractive space for children to learn, we will arrange the classroom in the open air with a blackboard on the wall. Although the view might distract the pupils at first I believe that after two lessons they’ll get used to it and get their heads down and study. Further in the future we plan to link the school building with the monastery and the monastery garden where we will also have lessons. The future looks very bright.

IN THE HEART OF THE OLD CITY

Medieval Monastery Garden

Medieval Mediterranean Garden of St Lawrence Monastery (MMG) in Sibenik was restored and opened on 6th November 2007 after being forgotten about for a hundred years. MMG is an integral part of the St Lawrence Monastery and an integral part of the programs that the Sibenik Private Gymnasium has developed. The restoration project of MMG was completed by renowned landscape architect, Dragutin Kiš, who received the Millennium Award for Flora in Japan, 2000. This particular type of garden is notably rare, as it is the only one of its kind in Croatia, and there a very few in this part of Europe. MMG follows an established medieval design: a cross design for a pathway, small centrally located water feature, with low growing varieties framed by box tree and beautiful spectacular old varieties aromatic rose standards. There are four sections filled with medicinal plants and herbs. A special place has been assigned for our assortment of thyme in a wonderful array of red, purple, silver, light and dark green foliage. The sensational combination of colours is a true work of art. Another notable attraction in the garden are the capers. Legend has it that Juraj Dalmatinac brought the first capers to Sibenik. They have been planted

within the gaps and cracks in the stone walls as a homage to the great builder. The inclusion of this simple medieval plant we are able to tie together the main features of this region; stone; flora; Juraj Dalmatinac. Šibenik has claims on another significant historical figure, Robert Visiani Šibenčanin. He was one of the most famous European botanists of the 12th Century and a professor at the famous University of Padua. From its inception the project to restore MMG was fueled by the objective to have the site open to the public. With this in mind we created a number of educational programs for schools and for organized tours. The MMG is situated within the St. Lawrence Monastery complex which means that during your visit to the space you can tour Our Lady's Grotto, the Church of St Lawrence, the Monastery as well as a cafe, restaurant, and souvenir shop. I have recently spent a few hours in the garden and it is an excellent place to relax from the hustles and bustles of the Old City. It has the feel of an oasis in the centre of town and after walking the gardens you must enjoy a cold drink under the shade of the monastery bell tower. A truly unique experience and well worth a visit if you are in the Old City of Sibenik.

The Sibenik Button Through the years, the Šibenik Button decorated the male national costume, a throughout the last few decades it has been recognized as an original souvenir of Šibenik. Today, the Šibenik Button can be bought in the form of earnings, rings, charms, tie pins, broaches, necklaces and other similar items. The Button has the form of two half spheres connected in the middle and hollow inside. The outer part is decorated with thin silver threads and balls. The original Bu-

tton was made out of silver, with an exact size; however, today you can find it made out of gold and aluminum and in various sizes. The Šibenik Button, and an authentic souvenir was made by the famous filigree Ljazer Čivjak according to the ideas of the designer Franka Baranović. In 2007, the Šibenik Button was named the most original Croatian souvenir by the Croatian Tourist Board. Today the Šibenik Button is a component of the costumes of Šibenik Klapas (a cappella groups).

SIBENIK CATHEDRAL The city of Sibenik is best known for its magnificent cathedral St. Jacob. The cathedral is constructed entirely of stone. Not only according to beauty, construction and the significance of its style is it the most important building in the city but it is also recognized by the more eminent world organizations. On the 30th of November 200 the cathedral was added to the list of protected cultural monuments of UNESCO. The idea to build such a cathedral began in 1298 when Sibenik received the title of “city”. The construction started in 1431 and was finally completed in 1536.

Sibenik Rivera has a very indented coastline with numerous bays, ports, more than 240 islands, reefs and points including the national park of Kornati. The direct airline length of the coastline is 56.2 kilometers but in reality it is 806 kilometers long due to the amount of inlets, rivers, bays and coves. The largest island in the Sibenik County is Kornat which has a surface area of 32,525,315 me-

ters squared. The inhabited islands include Kopara, Gola Glava, Krapanj, Zlarin, Prvić, Tribunj, Kaprije, Žirje and Murter. On the island of Visovcu on the river Krka live Franciscan monks. The island with the highest peak is Kornat with 237 meters, while the lowest inhabited islands are Krapanj, seven meters above sea level and Tribunj only two meters above sea level.

SIBENIK CHILDREN’S FESTIVAL The city of Sibenik has held a festival in the name of children since 1958. At the beginning the festival was named the Yugoslavian Children’s festival, and then in 1991 the name was changed to the International Children’s Festival. This year the festival should have marked its 50th anniversary, although in reality it was

The City Hall is located in the central city square, formerly known as Plathei Communis. It is a very harmonious and airy Renaissance style building built from 1533-1536. The ground floor includes porch with semi-circular arches supported by columns, which was an access to the former public utilities offices. On the first floor is the representative hall in which city councilmen would meet. In December 1943, during allied air strikes, the City Hall building was completely destroyed and was restored after the war, in its original shape and appearance.

Knin - day of city On June the 13th the city of Knin and its inhabitants celebrate the Day of City of Knin and St. Anthony’s day – and St. Anthony is the town’s patron saint! The festivities are marked by many religious, cultural and sports and art manifestations. In order to make the celebration more cheerful, “Kninfest” is held, a festival of party music at which around 30 prominent musicians performing such music style gather. This festival is gaining in qu-

ality and number of visitors each year and ends late at night. A music spectacle “Kninfest” takes place during celebration of the Day of City of Knin and celebration of St. Anthony’s Day. Many prominent musicians from entire Croatia participate in this festival. Festival is sponsored by city of Knin and has more and more visitors each year. All songs performed at the festival had been recorded and played in numerous radio and televisions programmes.

TISNO A long tradition in the tourism industry Tisno is a small Dalmatian town on island Murter, situated half on the island, half on the mainland. In the 19th and 20th centuries Tisno was, apart from being the administrative centre, the region developed strong trade connections with its production of wine and olive oil. In fact Tisno was one of the first towns in the region to develop tourism which resulted in foreign tourists starting to stay in the town after the First World War. Tisno at that time already had small hotels and private accommodation. Modern day Tisno has significantly changed from its historical roots. The future looks bright as well; the town has recently received permission to build more hotels as well as camps and other tourist amenities. With its long and exceptionally beautiful coastline, including stunning bays and natural beaches, set against a pine forest, Tisno provides a magical vacation for its guests. One of the particularly charming things to do is to set sail in a small boat to one of the neighbouring isles. In fact the whole region is a “heaven” for sailors as there are plenty of

secluded marinas and the coastline is indented which makes for a host of interesting places to drop anchor and enjoy the natural surroundings. The peaceful and hospitable people of this place, which was once predominantly a place of hard toil, have preserved their traditions and culture despite the hardships of its history. The chief occupations today include farming, wine production, olive growing, fishing and tourism. Another interesting fact is that the people of Tisno have once again got the right to decide their own justice. Back in 1899 Tisno has its own court and this worked until 1949 when its powers were ceased. However in 2006 the town officially opened its own court again and was once again in charge of its judicial system. The average air temperature in January reaches 6.9 °C and between July and August 24.7 °C. Tisno is situated on the regional road connecting the main road with the island of Murter. In fact tourism started in 1923 when Tisno organised a group of guests from the Czech Republic who stayed in private villas in the resort.
