Reading Passage-1 Doing business in Japan People planning to do business in Japan should know a few things about the country, its tradition and its people. First of all, you should hire a good interpreter – some who speaks the language and who knows the customs and traditions. Many people in Japan shake hands when they meet, but you shouldn’t be too fast. You should wait and see if they offer their hand first. When somebody gives you their business card, you should look at it and read it carefully. You shouldn’t write on it, because Japanese people think this is very impolite. Some advice about meetings – you shouldn’t worry about silences during a meeting. You should respect those silences. And finally, remember that you shouldn’t make much eye contact.

Reading Exercise-2 Quality of Life: Italian siesta How many times have you found yourself in a deserted Italian city between the hours of 1 and 4 p.m? Store closed, silence all around, or maybe the vague noise of silverware coming from opened windows, in the summer...and Sunday? No way, you have to plan your grocery shopping in advance: everything is closed. Well...now since globalization has reached Italy: malls started opining in the late-eighties and now little shops with a ten-hour business day are blooming (so similar to the delis in NYC that, when I enter one, I automatically start speaking English). But besides these scary hints of an Italian “Americanization”, may stores still resist the tide and dutifully place a “closed” sign during lunch hours.

Reading Passage-3 Finmeccanica Company Wins Turkish Bid Turkey selected Italian company Telespazio for the construction of a longdelayed Göktürk elecro-optical satellite system worth around $250 million. The agreement covers the supply of an Earth observation satellite equipped with a high-resolution optical sensor, an integration and test centre for satellites to be built in Turkey, and the entire ground segment of the system, which will carry out in-orbit operation, data acquisition and processing. Telespazio will also provide all satellite launch and test services. Telespazio’s offer, which involves local industry on a significant scale, fully met the requirements of the Turkish defence authorities, which chose the Finmeccanica company from a large number of bidders.
