The Mysterious Periodic Table of Elements
Elements as Building Blocks The periodic table is organized like a big grid. Each element is placed in a specific location because of its atomic structure. As with any grid, the periodic table has rows (left to right) and columns (up and down). Each row and column has specific characteristics. For example, beryllium (Be) and magnesium (Mg) are found in column two and share certain similarities while potassium (K) and calcium (Ca) from row four share different characteristics.
This lesson is focused on the least learned Learning Competency of Grade 7 Science for First Quarter “recognizes that substances are classified into elements and compounds”. Specifically, you will:
familiarize the layout of the periodic table;
Cite and write the name of common elements using symbol or vis-à-vis; and
know some information about the elements that may be found in the periodic table.

ACTIVITY CARD 1 In this activity, you will determine the common elements that can be found in the Periodic table of Elements.
PAN DE ELEMENTS! Directions: Using the word list of elements below; encircle the word of elements that can be found in the text box.
Elements in the periodic table are arraigned into increasing atomic number from left to right. Hence, atomic number is the number of protons present in the element. For example, if Hydrogen has 1 as its atomic number, it means it has 1 proton inside it.
ACTIVITY CARD 2 What is the SYMBOL? oAn abbreviation of the element name.

ACTIVITY CARD 3 In this activity, you are going to determine the element’s name using the period and group number.
When you look at the periodic table, each row is called a period. It has 7 periods and go from left to right. The periodic table also has a special name for its vertical columns. Each column is called a group which contain 18 groups or families..
ACTIVITY CARD 4 In writing the symbol of an element:
The first letter should be capitalized. (e.g. in the case of 1 letter symbol elements such as C, N, H, O) For 2-3 letter symbol, the first letter should be capitalized while the remaining letters should be small letters. (e.g. Ne, Uoo)
