STEP ONE | study of bird of paradise and extraction of component
Software 3ds Studio Max Rhino 4.0 Rhino CAM Adobe InDesign Adobe Illustrator Adobe Premiere Project Description Through the study of the Bird of Paradise’s morphology, growth pattern and genesis, we explored through digital processes how the flower could give light to a new digital abstraction. Ultimately, an animation using 3ds Studio Max and Adobe Premiere was created to reflect the abstracted component system’s instinctive movements. A second abstraction was defined to create a solid 3-D structure using Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) processes.

Project Description The goal was to design a mixed-used building in Poine St-Charles, geared towards people who were having difficulties finding mainstream work. The project had to include a workshop, a small coffee shop, a residential community, consultation areas and office space. The boxed shaped with inclined facade maximizes space while still given a contemporary edge to the building. The glass emphasizes and celebrates the vertical gallery space. A study in concrete slab structural systems was also conducted.

LIGHT MODULATOR in three development phases
Tools/Skills Manual Drafting Cardboard Modelling Project Description Light has both qualities of energy and matter and further exploration permits the discovery of its sometimes unexpected effects. Light refracts, reflects and gets absorbed. What becomes more and more interesting however is how light creates shadows and the beautiful contrasts that are generated. In this study, cardboard models of light “cubes” were constructed and later manually drafted with shading.

Its form as a double lozange is directly inspired from the previous project (light modulator). The use of calm blues and invigorating yellows are meant to suscite emotion within the pavilion. Hollowed seats in the wall provide a space which accentuates the sense of hearing.

Course & Professors Architectural Graphics and Elements of Design Prof. Pierina Saia & Prof. David Covo Skills/Tools Manual Drafting White Card Modelling Sketch-Up Project Description At the junction of de la Gauchetière and St-Laurent sits an abandoned lot in Chinatown. This lookout is meant to be a gathering point alluding to the contemporary history of this neighborhood which has gone through a period of forced constriction (as experienced by the contracting tunnel). The open space projecting outwards at the top of these stairs alludes to the bright outlook of this community and allows users to see the improvements of Chinatown as the years go by.

Competition Concours Hélium Université Laval Software Adobe Illustrator Adobe Photoshop Microsoft Publisher Sketch-Up Project Description Using only balloons and helium, an installation was proposed for a one night event at the Musée de la Civilisation in Québec City. The installation invokes an image of cascading water droplets. The perpendicular foot bridge allows visitors to feel like they are going through a waterfall, into a grotto. The passage above evokes the feeling of going across. Fans beneath the balloons create “water” movement and different coloured lights projected onto the white balloons affect the mood of the installation. Collaborator(s): Anne-Marie Nguyen Ji-Won Jun

Course & Professor Organization of Material in Building Avi Friedman Skills Manual Drafting Material Technology Knowledge Project Description This was my first foray into hand-drafted technical working drawings. We had to make plans for a simple light-frame construction house that could be sold as a kit. The project was submitted in three parts: (1) structural shell design - floor plans - joist, beam, stud design - roof truss design (2) section of the shell - choosing of material (3) furnishing of the bathroom with a under $2000 budget. - 4 elevations - 1 floor plan - 2 details - fixture choices - budget breakdown Collaborator(s): Brian Dudkiewicz
