Mass Intention For Fr. Patrick O’ Dwyer Sunday, August 16th at 9 AM
Attention all teachers, catechists, ministers and parents! Our next Virtus Training session will be held in the parish hall on September 22nd at 7pm to 9:30pm. It is a very informative program which promotes awareness and prevention of child sexual abuse. And our next fingerprinting session is scheduled on November 4th.
The Rite of Baptism is a sacrament of initiation. Understanding a sacrament does not begin with the ritual, it begins with preparation and catechesis. Baptism Preparation classes are offered every month. Our next Baptism preparation class will be offered on Saturday, September 19th at 3pm in the Chapter room. Baptism is a gateway to all the other sacraments. Christ calls and welcomes our new family members into our Church. It is a public declaration of love and commitment of the parents and godparents. The children are initiated into the community, in the midst of the community, by the community. Please call Deborah at the rectory or e-mail her at
[email protected] for an application and more detailed information.

LACMA Excursion for our Sunday School This year we are planning a special excursion to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) to view their religious art collection. The tour will be led by our art history professor and docent Victoria Loschuk. This year we will also have an outreach program at the Nazareth House where the children will perform for the retired residents. Please send in your completed registration for our coming fall term. We have a wonderful team of caring teachers this year! We welcome all new and returning students from pre-kindergarten to 8th grade to be a part of this engaging, spiritual and formative program. It is important that our children continue their Catholic education after their First Communion. Please call Deborah at the rectory or email her at
[email protected] for a registration form.
Although it is indeed August and summer is winding down it is still the quiet time before the activities of the fall and schools commence. A last little bit of “down time” perhaps may be welcome before the activities and commitments of the school year, sports, and other activities keep us quite active. Nevertheless, I have always noticed, since I can remember, that the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary falls right smack in the middle of the quiet month! How appropriate to have a festive religious celebration in the middle of the month: it is a statement that the Word of God, the Creator, is subject to one and this celebration can help pull us out of possible doldrums to recognize the utter difference between Divinity, God, and human beings (not to diminish the fact that we are also made in the image of God). God’s will that Mary, the Mother of Jesus, be our Mother too is implied in this celebration. This is indeed a happy occasion. Presently, in this Archdiocese this celebration is not a Holy Day of Obligation when it falls on a Saturday, as it does this year. I will take advantage of the latter part of this quieter month to be out of the office and to, therefore, not write a bulletin letter again until things start revving up again at the end of the month. Next weekend, also, our parish will be hosting a missionary, Rev. Gabriel Kumordji, SVD, who will be speaking at all the Masses and presiding at several of them. Every year each parish in the Archdiocese acknowledges the missionary nature of our church and so hosts the Missionary Cooperative Plan. There are envelopes in the pews and all proceeds go to the diocese of the missionary, in this case, Ghana. Please make checks payable to St. Timothy’s. We welcome Fr. Gabriel next weekend and offer our spiritual support and financial if possible. Please say hi to him after Mass next week if you are able to. Most of us appreciate the “hospitality” offered here after most of the Sunday Masses in the parish hall with a continental breakfast and friends. There is a problem though: there is no hospitality offered at the Saturday evening 5:30 pm Mass! Have no fear! Some parishioners have offered their services to begin offering “hospitality” after the 5:30 pm Mass but not a continental breakfast. Rather, wine and cheese! (Why do I get the feeling that this will be potentially popular!) This weekend we will offer it and see how it goes. After this weekend we will evaluate it and see if we should continue it and/or how often we should offer it. Have a great week!

As one of the sacraments of initiation, Confirmation is an oil rite. The candidates are anointed by the Holy Spirit to be kings and prophets who live in the kingdom of God and proclaim the Word of God. Through this sacrament they are commissioned to spread the gospel and build up the Church, the Body of Christ. Preparation for the sacrament is directed towards apostolic witness and missionary spirit which can transform the world. Confirmation classes for adults and teenagers will be offered in October.
