Continuation….. There’s the story about the last-minute Christmas shoppers: a mother was running furiously from store to store. Suddenly she became aware that the pudgy little hand of her three-yearold son was no longer clutched in hers. In panic she retraced her steps and found him standing with his little nose pressed flat against a frosty window. He was gazing at a manger scene. Hearing his mother’s near hysterical call, he turned and shouted with innocent glee: “Look Mommy! It’s JesusBaby Jesus in the hay!” With obvious indifference to his joy and wonder, she impatiently jerked him away saying, “We don’t have time for that!” It is, in a way, a balancing act to try to stay focused on “the reason for the season,” Jesus, and to be decent and even charitable human beings by serving and giving, to at least our family and friends. We need to make money in order to pay for the basic necessities of life as well as for the ability to give to others especially at this time of the year-who wants to be a humbug! This is good old-fashioned love of God and love of neighbor, the dual commandments of our religion and, did I mention, the recipe for true and lasting happiness. But keeping in mind that old Latin adage, “nemo dat quod non habet,” which translates as “no one can give what he does not have,” it is necessary to, so to speak, to charge our soul batteries (like you do for your cell phones, smart phones, and even laptops!). Let me go through with you, briefly here, the users instructions about how to charge you-your soul, that is, your will, memory, imagination, and thoughts. First, we have to at least think about wanting to connect with God, our Higher Power, otherwise known to Catholics as God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit (the angels and saints are hovering around too, don’t forget). So, first, there is the INTENTION to be with and in the presence of our Maker. Next, we need to carve out some TIME from our busy days and a PLACE. Could be in the early morning before everything and everyone gets going, could be during our commute, could be while we are taking a walk or gardening but certainly at church or in some quiet and alone place if possible so there are fewer distractions. WHAT to do during the time would include asking God to come to us (actually He is with us but we are not always aware of His presence) and help us to pray. We can slowly pray the Our Father and the Hail

Mary and some other devotional or favorite prayers. We can read a spiritual book ( Dan Brown’s books do not qualify here!) such as any of Thomas Keating’s books or the classics by Frances de Sales or even best sellers but still with enough spiritual substance to cut spiritual teeth with from Emilie Griffin or Kathleen Norris. And the Bible! Then taking time to thank and praise God and to ask Him to help us with our difficulties. Then a time to be silent; remember Mother Teresa said the language of God is silence. We can do part, some or all of the above within five, ten , twenty or thirty minutes once or twice a day. Just like exercise, a walk around the block on the weekend isn’t really going to help that much if a person wants to be physically fit. So in the spiritual and religious life, it has to be a commitment be it so small at first, even five minutes a day is better than nothing. Then we can keep a balance between our active lives and our connected life to Almighty God. Please note: the administration of St. Timothy Church will be making its annual financial report to registered parishioners in the mail next week. It will also be available in the church next week for all to see. We will ask you to consider to continue or begin to give to St. Timothy Church in 2010 financially. There will also be a “parish fair” next to showcase the ministries here. The past several years this was done during the month of October; we are doing it in December this year.
