Continuation….. If you stop and step back for a moment and look at all the activity at our church or most Catholic churches for that matter, you might just think that they are busy about “church things.” That is a correct observation! We Catholics believe that we are saved in community or the Body of Christ as in the people. Yes indeed, just as the Israelites were saved by God as a people from slavery and led through exile into the Promised Land so we the new Israel are saved as a people, as a church, by God and it is his will that we are saved in that way. So yes, we have many activities, like the “holiday boutique,” hospitality almost every week in the parish hall as well as our parochial school, religious education and various ministries. In general, we Catholics live this communal nature of our faith out in our Sunday mass and church experience. It is important, in fact, essential for us as Catholics to participate to some extent in the visible church. We are saved as a visible and an invisible church. The church, the people that believe are visible and that is an essential part of our experience and belief as Catholics. But we are also invisible in the sense that we relate to God at times alone only between God and the individual believer in the heart and mind of the believer. Many Protestants emphasis the latter, that is, the invisible part of our salvation, the “me and God” part of it. But we Catholics believe as well that the invisible or spiritual aspect of our religion is essential but so is the visible church indispensable for our salvation. Many Protestants believe that salvation is only between the individual and God and the visible or church aspect is optional or not essential to ones salvation. I am speaking in generalities for there are always exceptions that emphasize one aspect or another such as an ill person or “shut-in” or even a hermit who spends time alone praying but even hermits gather for mass. So for Catholics even if we don’t think about our salvation as being both visible and invisible we live out our everyday believing lives that way which is that we know that we are saved invisibly or spiritually and visibly or within the community of believers. This Protestant emphasis on the individual invisible salvation fits in well with that noted feature of our culture, which is a kind of rugged individualism. On the other hand it is interesting to note that many Catholic countries such as Mexico, Spain, and France, also have a strong communal culture as opposed to a rugged individualistic culture that ours is

noted for. Thus, we Catholics have this gift of community to share with the wider culture and our belief that we are saved as individuals and in community can help us balance our lives to be alone before God at times and to be with others who believe so that we can be nourished and enriched by the presence and experience of other believers. Yes, our church is busy and that is good since we are individuals saved within the community of believers.
