Exhibitions and more! The „working_world.net“ exhibition is unique Europewide and focuses on the rapidly changing conditions in the working world. Eleven excitingly designed thematic sections give you a look behind the scenes of globalisation. From old industrial machines, inspiring art installations to modern office elements, visitors awaits a very special exhibition experience - informative, and at the same time refreshing and entertaining.

For exploring the exhibition, the Arbeitswelt Museum offers a wide range of custom-made guided and educational tours for the young and old. The programme is not restricted to the museum's own rooms, but also includes combined round tours of the industrial and Jewish Steyr. A special treat awaits visitors who join the exploration tour. Starting at the museum's historic Labourers' Inn the tour leads through the surrounding Wehrgraben district whose picturesque alleyways and canals elicit impressive insights into Steyr's industrial past.

Museumsbahn For lovers of historic steam railways, the Romantic Town of Steyr has something very special to offer: Austria’s oldest 760mm narrow track railway. The 17 km long track connects the Romantic Town of Steyr with the towns of Grünburg and Steinbach/Steyr. The train passes through beautiful woods and meadows along the Steyr river, one of Austria’s clearest rivers. The locomotives and carriages have been lovingly restored with utmost care to every detail, so that one can hardly believe that our historical train has already been in service for more than a 100 years.

By moonlight, you will bake your own flatbread in the romantic Steyrdorf and listen to stories about the “invention” of bread, about the “Bäckernazl” and “Brotsitzer” all the way up to the present-day highly skilled craft of bread baking. Carmen Opera in German language

The picturesque baroque ambience of the Lamberg Castle Schlossgraben, with its round arches and idyllic passages is again the setting for the Ope®n Air production. Susanne Sommer stages the story of Carmen, a Spanish woman, living in Sevilla around 1820. Torn between two men her pride finally costs her her life. Not only the Flamenco dancers add Spanish flair but especially the many catchy tunes such as the toreador song “Euren Tost - Auf in den Kampf“, directed by Niels Muus.

Pilgrimage church

Christkindl For more than 300 years, the faithful have gone on pilgrimages to the church of Christkindl. Towards the end of the 17th century Ferdinand Sertl, the tower watchman and bandmaster who suffered from epilepsy, lived in Steyr. He placed a small wax figure of the Christ child into the hollow of a fir tree in the woods of Steyr and was cured. The construction of the present church was begun by Giovanni Battista Carlone in 1702. It was finished by Jakob Prandtauer between 1708 and 1725. Today the small wax figure is housed in a little reliquary on the high altar above the globe-shaped tabernacle.

The mechanical nativity scene by Karl Klauda (18551939) awakens almost 300 figurines to life using bicycle chains, shafts and gear wheels that make them move through a biblical landscape to the accompaniment of Bohemian cylinder organ music.

The Pöttmesser nativity sence with a floor space of 58 m2 and 778 up to 30 cm high figurines is one of the world’s largest nativity scenes. The oriental figurines were made by Ferdinand Pöttmesser (1895-1977).

in the Innerberger Stadl The Innerberger Stadl was built in 1611 and was used by the Innerberg main guild for the storage of grain and food. Today the double-gabled renaissance building with rich sgraffito decorating its facade houses the Steyr Stadtmuseum. Folkloristic collections, scythe hammer, nail forge, the Petermandl knife collection, the Steinparz bird collection and arms produced by the founder of the Steyr Works, Josef Werndl, recall the heyday of the former iron city of Steyr.

Scythe hammer The technological construction of the scythe hammer, exhibited in the Steyr Stadtmuseum since 1957, goes back to the time of Maria Theresia, as various studies and investigations have shown. Only original pieces were used, almost all of which are more than one hundred years old and have been out of use for a long time.

The Lamberg nativity figurines from the Count Lamberg collection were created between the baroque and Biedermeier periods. More than 200 of these figurines have been decoratively arranged on a large mountain.

The Bethlehem nativity scene was given to the town of Steyr upon the conclusion of its town partnership with Bethlehem in 2001. The stable alone weighs approximately 170 kg, the figurines between 5-10 kg. Opening hours 10:00 am - 4:00 pm April - Oct. | Mon Nov - March | Mon and Tue Advent - 6 Jan
