NMC

The highlight of September at Naval Medical Center was the 5th Annual Patriot Day event in honor of September 11th. Sponsored by Krav Maga San Diego, Santee Fire Fighters Local 4373, and attended by San Diego Fire-Rescue Department/35C, this wonderful event brought patients, families, and staff together to enjoy a day outdoors with a barbeque and swimming. These sponsors host this event every year, which is their way to thank the servicemen and women who are undergoing treatment and rehabilitation at Naval Medical Center. As you can see, the turnout was amazing!

“All Decked Out” Fashion Show at Yachtfest

Family Outreach presents: Flu Prevention Tips

Camp Hero groups ventured all over San Diego this past August. Weeks were filled with outings to Cabrillo, Camp Surf, and the San Diego Wild Animal Park. When groups weren’t traveling around San Diego, they were participating in games, discussions, and activities at the Murphy Canyon Youth & Community Outreach Complex.

Many gathered for this luncheon with this year’s Anthousa Award recipients to be recognized at the upcoming En Vogue 2009 Event to benefit the San Diego ASYMCA on October 17th.

The Family Outreach Department encourages you and your family to stay healthy this fall with these tips.

 Wash hands frequently with soap and water for 20 seconds (long enough to sing the "Sesame hand-washing" song twice). Alcoholbased hand cleaners are also effective.

Wash, wash, wash my hands, Make them nice and clean! Rub the bottoms and the tops And fingers in between

 Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way  Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.

The Active Duty Department Military Volunteer Program logs hundreds of hours each month volunteering with various San Diego organizations such as Feeding America. On Friday, September 4th, the ASYMCA staff spent the morning at Feeding America sorting food and building lunch sacks for school children. Feeding America is a San Diego hunger-relief charity that hosts our military volunteers a few times a month.

ASYMCA Staff Event lead by Active Duty

Between Quilt Deliveries for OIF/OEF Veterans, assisting with Yachtfest, and participating in Neighborhood Exchange – the San Diego ASYMCA Volunteers at Naval Medical Center helped more that 770 injured and ill at Naval Medical Center. Although the majority of our volunteers are civilian, many of the active duty men and women in treatment at NMC volunteer their time to the ASYMCA. One way they give back involves creating personalized Thank You cards for the community organizations that donate tickets, sponsor events, and provide support to our local military.

GI Joe Screening at UltraStar Cinemas Thank you UltraStar Cinemas for the free screening of GI Joe in Chula Vista and Oceanside for military families!

Final thoughts... From the Desk of Executive Director Paul Steffens: Is it really almost October? Is 2009 heading into the final quarter? This is difficult to accept as it seems like hours ago we were mapping out our programs for 2009. Looking at the past nine months and the many terrific special events and the successes of our monthly programs, I am convinced of a few things—1. I am so fortunate to have a team of 25 “SUPER STARS” who truly are passionate about providing quality programs for military families, 2, I am also so fortunate to work for a Board of Management that shares that passion and provides amazing support and 3, We could not do what we do without solid partnerships with and support from the San Diego community, both the military and civilian sectors. All these factors made it possible to reach a new benchmark in August for our average monthly program participation of 7,634, which is a 237% increase since 2004. With this shared passion we can continue to reach more and more service members and their families. We must continue to reach out to ensure there is no one who wears the uniform of this great country who is unaware of the Armed Services YMCA and our programs that preserve family readiness. I am pleased that we were also able to provide hands-on support to an agency that supports members of the San Diego Community. The ASYMCA Team, as you see in the pictures on Page 3, spent the morning recently at Feeding America sorting food and building lunch sacks. Feeding America is assisted by military volunteers each month, again demonstrating that more is accomplished through partnerships than trying to do it all alone. In that regard, I am so thankful to the fact that the San Diego community recognizes that the challenges faced by military families is increased by the current economic conditions and continue to provide support through donations and in-kind services. Thanks to this strong support we are able to maintain quality programs that make a positive difference in military family readiness. In closing, I ask that we all review our organization and personal disaster preparedness plan and be ready in the event we face another wildfire in San Diego. Now is the time to prepare. It is also time to take preventive measures to avoid getting the flu. There is ample information in print and on the internet on how to avoid getting the flu. Stay strong and healthy. Keep Chargin!
